        Richness of the base, Iexicon optimization, and suffix /i/~Φ alternation in Korean

        Hong, Sunghoon. 2001. Richness of the base, lexicon optimization, and suffix /i/~φ alternation in Korean. Studies in Phonetics. Phonology and Morphology 7.1. 215-242. This paper presents an OT analysis of the phonological patterns exhibited by the verbal/adjectival suffixes in Korean. I propose that it is not arbitrarily determined whether a suffix is alternating or non-alternating, but rather phonologically motivated for the most part. I will show that alternating suffixes with /i/ serve us to avoid bad 'syllable contact' or to discard a coda consonant, while non-alternating suffixes without /i/ enable us to be maximally faithful, better aligned, or to observe syllable-based phonotactic constraints. Based on this analysis, I touch on the issue of UR for the verbal/adjectival suffixes. Richness of the Base in OT guarantees that there are no restrictions imposed on inputs, but the consideration of learnability drives us to select a particular input for an output. Utilizing Paradigm-level Lexicon Optimization, motivated to deal with allomorphy, I propose that the suffixes in question do not have /i/ in their UR's. (Hansung University)

        Underlying Representation in Optimality Theory

        This paper addresses how we should deal with underlying representation (UR) in Optimality Theory (OT), focusing in particular on the proper method of Lexicon Optimization (LO), a mechanism in OT that determines a 'real' input among various possible inputs. After closely examining previous proposals, I conclude that Kager's (1999) model of LO is most promising, only if it is controlled by a meta-principle, Input-Output Isomorphy, that guarantees a UR to be identical to its surface form in the cases where underlying contrast are expressed at surface level. I demonstrate that LO performed in this way provides a good account of UR for allomorphy cases without posing any problem to Richness of the Base, one of the fundamental concepts in OT.

      • A Comparative Analysis on the Firm-Specific Advantages of Korean Multinational Enterprises

        본 논문에서는 증권거래소에 상장된 한국 제조 기업들이 어떠한 경쟁우위를 통하여 해외 시장에서 생산활동을 하는가를 분석하였다. 표본기업들은 서구 선진국에 투자한 기업, ASEAN과 중국 등 아시아 개도국에 투자한 기업, 전혀 해외에 투자하지 않은 국내기업으로 분류하고 이들 기업 집단들의 경쟁우위, 즉 무형자산을 비교하였다. 분석 결과에 의하면, 선진국에 투자한 기업들은 국내기업에 비하여 기업 규모, 제품차별화, 마케팅활동, 대량생산능력의 측면에서 우월한 경쟁우위를 갖추고 있으며 관련 회사와의 협력체제를 구축하는 능력을 소유하고 있다. 이는 해외투자기업이 순수 국내기업보다 높은 경쟁우위를 지닌다는 무형자산이론을 이증하는 것이다. 또한 서구 선진국에 투자한 기업과 아시아에 투자한 기업을 비교하면, 전자는 연구 개발, 마케팅, 대량 생산의 측면에서, 후자는 조직관리의 측면에서 우월하다는 것을 보여주고 있다. 이는 한국 기업들이 투자 지역에 따라 상이한 경쟁우위를 사용하고 있다는 사실을 입증하는 것이다.

        Application of the Artificial Coral Reef as a Coastal Erosion Prevention Method with Numerical-Physical Combined Analysis (Case Study: Cheonjin-Bongpo Beach, Kangwon Province, South Korea)

        Artificial Coral Reefs (ACRs) have been introduced to help solve coastal erosion problems, but their feasibility has not been assessed with field data. This study conducted a feasibility analysis of ACRs on their erosion mitigation effects by performing a case study of Cheonjin-Bongpo beach, South Korea. A numerical-physical combined analysis was carried out using a SWAN model simulation and physical model test with a scale of 1/25 based on field observations of Cheonjin-Bongpo beach. Both Dean’s parameter and the surf-scaling parameter were applied to comparative analysis between the absence and presence conditions of the ACR. The results for this combined method indicate that ACR attenuates the wave height significantly (59~71%). Furthermore, ACR helps decrease the mass flux (~50%), undertow (~80%), and maximum wave set up (~61%). The decreases in Dean’s parameter (~66%) and the surf-scaling parameter suggest that the wave properties changed from the dissipative type to the reflective type even under high wave conditions. Consequently, an ACR can enhance shoreline stability.

      • Oligomerization of Dicyclopentadiene Over Nanoporous Al-KIT-6 Catalysts

        <P>The effect of Al incorporation over KIT-6 on the catalytic performance in dicyclopentadiene oligomerization reaction has been investigated. Al-KIT-6 was prepared through a post alumination method using KIT-6. The Al-KIT-6 prepared through Al grafting over KIT-6 was shown to have a well-arranged mesoporous structure, a large surface area, and a large pore size. Grafting of Al on KIT-6 generated Lewis acid sites with weak strength. The TCPD yield over the Al-KIT-6 catalysts was higher than that over KIT-6 during DCPD oligomerization and TCPD isomerization. It might be attributed to the higher number of acid sites in the Al-KIT-6 catalyst. In addition, higher endo-DCPD conversion and higher TCPD isomerization selectivity can be achieved by using Al-KIT-6 as compared with Al-MCM-41, likely due to the three-dimensional mesopores and larger pore diameters of the KIT-6 aluminosilicates.</P>

        Characterization of a new compact multi-channel multi-rail gap switch for linear transformer drivers

        A multi-channel multi-railgap spark switch (MRGS) is developed for linear transformer drivers(LTD) with high operating reliability and low circuit inductance. The switch has a multi-rail gap structure using a compact rectangular insulated case and rod-shaped electrodes with corona discharge for voltage balance, which (1) achieves miniaturization by making the switch flat, (2) ensures capacitors and the switch being compactly connected, and (3) reduces the cross-sectional area of the discharge current loop in the LTD discharge circuit, while maintaining a wide and flat current path in the switch section. To verify the operational reliability and performance of the new switch design, self-breakdown voltage and jitter have been experimentally characterized along with inductance reduction effect. Experimental results of this new MRGS are also compared with those of a 200 kV multi-gap multi-channel gas spark switch(MGS) used in various LTDs. The jitter was improved by up to about 50% compared to MGS.

        Effect of thermal ageing on mechanical properties of a high-strength ODS alloy

        A new high-strength ODS alloy, ARROS, was recently developed for the application as the cladding material of a Sodium-cooled fast reactor (SFR). To assess the long-term integrity under thermal ageing, ARROS was thermally aged in air at 650 o C for 1000 h. The degree of thermal ageing was assessed by mechanical tests such as uniaxial tensile, hardness, and small punch tests at from room temperature to 650 o C. Tensile strength was slightly decreased but elongation, hardness, and small punch energy were hardly changed at all test temperatures for the specimen aged at 650 o C for 1000 h. However, the variation in mechanical properties such as hardness and small punch energy increased after thermal ageing. Using the test results, the correlation between tensile strength and maximum small punch load was established.

        Divestment Decisions of Korean Manufacturing Firms in Foreign Markets

        해외 자회사를 운영하는 한국 기업들이 투자금을 회수하는 경우가 빈번하게 발생하고 있다. 본 연구는 한국 상장제조기업들의 투자금 회수에 관한 의사결정에 미치는 요인들을 실증적으로 검토하였다. 분석 결과에 의하면, 재벌 기업들은 비재벌 기업에 비하여 보다 빈번하게 해외 자회사로부터 투자금을 회수하는 것으로 나타났다. 그 이유는 재벌 소속 기업들은 제품별로 혹은 지역별로 다각화의 정도가 높고 많은 수의 해외 공장을 운영하며 국제 영업 경험이 풍부하기 때문이다. 즉, 수익성이 낮은 자회사에서 높은 자회사로 자원을 이동하는 능력이 상대적으로 우수하므로 해외 공장을 운영하기 위한 기회비용이 높다고 할 수 있다. 따라서 투자금 회수가 해당 자회사의 입장에서는 사업 축소라는 부정적 평가를 받을 수 있으나 모기업 혹은 그룹 입장에서는 자원의 효율적 배분이라는 긍정적 평가를 받을 수 있다. 이에 반하여 비재벌 기업들은 운영하는 공장의 수가 적고 특정 지역 혹은 제품에 대한 의존도가 높으므로 자회사간에 자원을 이동시킬 수 있는 유연성이 상대적으로 부족하다고 할 수 있다. 그리고 국제 경험이 풍부한 기업이 투자 회수의 가능성이 높은 것으로 나타났는데 이러한 기업들도 자원을 해외 자회사간에 수월하게 이전하는 것으로 추정된다. 또한 해외 자회사에 대한 통제가 높은 기업도 투자 회수의 가능성이 높은 것으로 나타났는데 그 주요 원인은 중국 시장에 완전 소유 자회사를 세운 기업들이 높은 회수율을 보이기 때문이다. 마지막으로, 시장 규모가 크거나 성장률이 높은 국가에 투자한 기업들은 투자금 회수가 낮은 것으로 나타났는데, 이는 피투자국의 거시경제적 환경이 한국 자회사의 의사결정에 상당한 영향을 미치고 있음을 의미한다. This paper aims to investigate several influential factors in the decision patterns of Korean manufacturing firms that have divested their foreign subsidiaries. According to empirical results, chaebol-affiliated firms are found to have divested their subsidiaries more frequently than their counterparts. Chaebol firms usually operate a large number of offshore plants, are highly diversified over related markets or products, and have more experience in the foreign market. Therefore, they usually face higher opportunity costs in operating offshore projects, being encouraged to transfer corporate resources to other subsidiaries when one subsidiary shows unsatisfactory performance. Therefore, divestment could be negative from the perspective of a subsidiary, but it could be positive from the perspective of a parent firm as it enhances the flexibility of funds flow. In contrast, non-chaebol firms seem to have less flexibility in transferring corporate resources among overseas subsidiaries since they are more reliant on particular regions or products. And firms with substantial international experience also show a higher propensity of divestment because they tend to easily transfer resources from one country to another. Furthermore, firms with fully owned subsidiaries also show a higher propensity of divestment, which indicates that those operating wholly owned subsidiaries in China had a higher rate of divestment. Lastly, the results demonstrate that Korean firms investing in those countries with higher economic growth or larger domestic markets are less likely to divest their subsidiaries. This implies that their decisions were significantly influenced by the macroeconomic environments of host countries.
