      • A Study on Development of the Optimal Neural Network in GMA Welding Process

        <P>Gas Metal Arc (GMA) welding is considered as a multi-parameter process that it’s hard to find optimal parameters for good welding. To overcome the problem, an artificial neural network based on the backpropagation algorithm was built to realize the relationships between process parameters and welding quality as output parameter. In this study, Mahalanobis Distance (MD) was employed to evaluate the availability of a given welding parameters which was proved to performance well in multivariate statistics. Input parameters such as welding current and arc voltage were chosen due to their significant influence on the welding quality. To improve the precision of given parameters’ evaluation, neural networks with different configurations were verified. The analyses on the measured and predicted MD by the proposed neural network were conducted. The proposed neural network based on the error backpropogation algorithm was proved to have high reliability to evaluate process parameters, which further makes it available in on-line monitoring system.</P>

        Intracellular Polysaccharide and its Antioxidant Activity by Pleurotus citrinopileatus SM-01

        The extraction parameters of intracellular polysaccharide (IPS) from Pleurotus citrinopileatus SM-01mycelia were optimized, and the in vitro and in vivo antioxidant activities of IPS were investigated. The optimum conditions of IPS extraction were predicted to be an ultrasonic treatment time of 664.09 s, precipitation time of 23.03h and pH 7.36, and IPS yield was estimated at 16.13%. The in vitro inhibition effects of IPS at a dosage of 5 g/L on the superoxide anion, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and hydroxyl radicals were 73.96±4.62%, 69.2±4.37%,and 50.75±4.39%, respectively, which were 72.56±5.08%, 22.83±1.94%, and 43.93±3.26% higher than that of butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), respectively. The reducing power of IPS was 0.9±0.07, 69.81±5.24% higher than that of BHT. The activities of glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) in mice blood were 241.38±23.19, 454.95±42.39, 60.32±5.16, and 32.39±2.54 U/mL,respectively, and the malonaldehyde (MDA) level was 9.54±0.72 nmol/mL. The results provided a reference for the large-scale extraction of IPS by P. citrinopileatus SM-01 in industrial fermentation, suggesting that the IPS can be used as a potential antioxidant, which enhances adaptive immune responses.

        A new phenanthrene derivative and two diarylheptanoids from the roots of Brassica rapa ssp. campestris inhibit the growth of cancer cell lines and LDL-oxidation

        Brassica rapa ssp. campestris (Brassicaceae) isa conical, deep purple, edible root vegetable commonlyknown as a turnip. We initiated phytochemical and pharmacologicalstudies to search for biological active compoundsfrom the roots of B. rapa ssp. campestris. Weisolated a novel phenanthrene derivative, 6-methoxy-1-[10-methoxy-7-(3-methylbut-2-enyl)phenanthren-3-yl]undecane-2,4-dione, named brassicaphenanthrene A (3) alongwith two known diarylheptanoid compounds, 6-paradol (1)and trans-6-shogaol (2), through the repeated silica gel(SiO2), octadecyl silica gel, and Sephadex LH-20 columnchromatography. The chemical structures of the compoundswere determined by spectroscopic data analyses includingnuclear magnetic resonance, mass spectrometry, ultravioletspectroscopy, and infra-red spectroscopy. All compoundsexhibited high inhibitory activity against the growth ofhuman cancer lines, HCT-116, MCF-7, and HeLa, with IC50values ranging from 15.0 to 35.0 lM and against LDL-oxidationwith IC50 values ranging from 2.9 to 7.1 lM.

        Seesaw-structured triboelectric nanogenerator for scavenging electrical energy from rotational motion of mechanical systems

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>This study reports a seesaw-structured triboelectric nanogenerator (S-TENG) for efficiently harvesting electrical energy from rotational motion of mechanical systems. The designed S-TENG with two arms is comprised four contact-pair units with distinctly different triboelectric polarity materials. The generated electric power from the unique structure based on the seesaw system was double at every machine rotation cycle. A magnetically coupled contact mechanism was also utilized to reduce the wear of the polymer material. It was experimentally confirmed that the proposed design significantly improved the reliability and long-term stability in comparison with currently available TENG systems based on the sliding mechanism. In addition, micro-pyramid patterns were formed on the polymer surface to enhance the surface charge density. Through systematic experiments with a variety of operational conditions, an instantaneous maximum output power density of 13.86W/m<SUP>2</SUP> was achieved at a rotation speed of 200rpm under a constant magnetic field strength of 0.2T. The S-TENG has been demonstrated as a direct power source to drive small electronic devices such as commercial LED arrays and to charge an energy storage unit.         Ginsenoside Rg3 Inhibition of Thyroid Cancer Metastasis Is Associated with Alternation of Actin Skeleton

        Ginsenoside Rg3, a bioactive constituent from Panax ginseng, is a worldwide well-known traditional Chinese medicine used as a tonic. It also has good antitumor activity by inhibiting tumors metastasis. Tumor metastasis is a high risk in thyroid cancer. However, the effect and molecular mechanism underlying the antimetastatic activity of Rg3 in thyroid cancer have not been reported. In our study, we found that Rg3 inhibited the growth of thyroid cancer in vitro and in vivo and significantly inhibited metastasis of thyroid cancer. Rg3 apparently inhibited the migration and invasion in four papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) cells (TPC-1, BCPAP, C643, and Ocut-2c cells) and pulmonary metastasis in lung metastasis model of C643 cells in nude mice. We further found that a possible mechanism of Rg3 inhibiting thyroid cancer cells metastasis was associated with inhibiting cells actin skeleton function. Rg3 inhibited lamellipodia formation and induced microspike formation by inhibiting Rho GTPase in thyroid cancer cells. Rg3 decreased the levels of Rac-1 and Cdc42 proteins. In addition, Rg3 decreased the expression levels of matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) and MMP-9 proteins in four thyroid cancer cells. The results that Rg3 remarkably inhibited the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor-C (VEGF-C) protein in PTC cells and VEGF-A protein in anaplastic thyroid cancer (ATC) cells and decreased the staining of CD31 in PTC and ATC tumors hinted that Rg3 might inhibit the lymph node metastasis in PTC and angiogenesis in ATC. These studies suggested that Rg3 might be a useful agent for the treatment of metastatic thyroid cancers.

      • The Optimal Levenberg-Marquardt Algorithm to Predict Welding Quality Using Mahalanobis Distance Theory

        <P>With the development of computational technology, neural network has attracted the more and more attentions to reveal the relationships between the process parameters and welding geometry. However, the Gas Metal Arc (GMA) welding is complex and of multiple interactions so that mathematical model for welding parameters has not been achieved. Neural networks have been noted as being particularly advantageous for modeling systems which contain noisy, fuzzy and uncertain elements, while a sufficient algorithm is employed. In this study, Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm was employed into GMA welding process. Mahalanobis Distance (MD) was measured to determine the on-line welding quality to avoid joint failure as welding quality. To get an optimal neural network, cases with different configurations were carried out. The Root of the Mean sum of Squared (RMS) error was adopted to evaluate the accuracy of the prediction by neural networks with LM algorithm. The results presented that the proposed algorithm had the superiority of high accuracy that can be used in the on-line welding process.</P>

        Improved Longitudinal Displacement Profile and Initial Support for Tunnel Excavation

        The ground support system has a significant impact on tunnel safety while the installation time of initial support is commonly designed by empirical method. The three dimensional numerical model, based on the engineering practice, is analyzed by FLAC3D. In this paper, an improved LDP (longitudinal displacement profile) equation is proposed, which is more accurate in describing the convergence of tunnel before excavation face reaching. Then, a methodology is presented to determine the installation location of initial support in a more efficient and effective way. By simulating the process of excavation load releasing, the appropriate time for installing initial support is when the evolution of surrounding rock displacement has a tendency to increase rapidly, namely that the stability of rock mass arrives at the critical state. The mathematical relationship between the convergence of tunnel and the relative location to tunnel face can be established by fitting monitoring data with the improved LDP equation. Substituting the critical tunnel convergence into the LDP relationship, the corresponding installation location of initial support will be calculated. Meanwhile, several schemes with diverse geological conditions are carried out to validate the improved LDP and the methodology.

      • T-SPOT.TB for Detection of Tuberculosis Infection among Hematological Malignancy Patients and Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant Recipients

        The diagnosis of latent Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection (LTBI) is recommended in hematological malignancy patients and before hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (Guidelines for the prevention and management of infectious complications of solid organ transplantation, 2004). Compared to traditional methods such as tuberculin skin test (TST), T-SPOT.TB has been shown to be more specific. In the present study we enrolled 536 patients for whom T-SPOT.TB was performed, among which 295 patients also received the TST test. The agreement (79%) between T-SPOT.TB and TST was poor (x=0.274, P<0.001). The patients with positive T-SPOT.TB results numbered 62 (11.6%), in which only 20 (48.8%) of the 41 receiving the TST test had positive results. A majority of the patients with T-SPOT.TB positive results had some other evidence ofTB, such as TB history, clinical symptoms and an abnormal chest CT scan. Active TB was found in 9 patients, in which 2 had negative TST results. We followed up the patients and no one developed active TB. Our study suggested that the T-SPOT.TB may be more useful for screening LTBI and active TB in hematological malignancy patients and hematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients than the TST test.

      • Abortions and Breast Cancer Risk in Premenopausal and Postmenopausal Women in Jiangsu Province of China

        To evaluate the relationship between abortions and risk of breast cancer, we conducted a case-control study with 669 cases and 682 population-based controls in Jiangsu Province of China. A structured questionnaire was used to elicit detailed information. Unconditional logistic regression analysis was performed to calculate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). The results have revealed that induced abortion was related to increased risk of breast caner. Premenopausal women who had ${\geq}3$ times of induced abortion were at increased crude OR (2.41, 95%CI: 1.09-5.42) and adjusted-OR (1.55, 95%CI: 1.15-5.68). Postmenopausal women with a previous induced abortion were at increased crude OR (2.04, 95%CI: 1.48-2.81) and adjusted-OR (1.82, 95%CI: 1.30-2.54), and there was a significant increase trend in OR with number of induced abortions (p for trend: 0.0001). Overall, spontaneous abortion did not significantly alter the risk of breast cancer, but postmenopausal women who had history of spontaneous abortion were at increased OR. These results suggested that relationship between breast cancer and abortions may depend on menopausal status and induced abortion may played an important role in the development of breast cancer in Jiangsu' women of China.

      • Monosomal Karyotypes among 1147 Chinese Patients with Acute Myeloid Leukemia: Prevalence, Features and Prognostic Impact

        A monosomal karyotype (MK), defined as ${\geq}2$ autosomal monosomies or a single monosomy in the presence of additional structural abnormalities, was recently identified as an independent prognostic factor conveying an extremely poor prognosis in patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). In the present study, after excluding patients with t(15;17), t(8;21), inv(16) and normal karyotypes, 324 AML patients with cytogenetic abnormalities were the main subject of analysis. The incidences of MK were 13% in patients aged 15 to 60 years and 18% in those between 15 and 88 years old. MK was much more prevalent among elderly patients (p < 0.001) and was significantly associated with the presence of -7, -5, del(5q), abn12p, abn17p, -18 or 18q-, -20 or 20q- and CK (for all p < 0.001 except for abn12p p=0.009), and +8 or +8q was less frequent in MK+ AML(p=0.007). No correlation was noted between monosomal karyotype and FAB subtype (p > 0.05); MK remained significantly associated with worse overall survival among patients with complex karyotype (p=0.032); A single autosomal monosomy contributed an additional negative effect in OS of patients with structural cytogenetic abnormalities (P=0.008). This report presents the prevalence, feature and prognostic impact of MK among a large series of Chinese AML patients from a single center for the first time.
