A new record of Galium bungei var. miltorrhizum (Hance) Jeong & Pak (Rubiaceae) in Korea

We reported an unrecorded plant species, Galium bungei var. miltorrhizum (Hance) Jeong & Pak in Korea. This species is found in Gyeonggi-do, Chungcheongbuk-do, Jeollabuk-do, Gyeongsangbuk-do, and Gyeongsangnam-do. G. bungei var. miltorrhizum is distinguished from related taxa by glabrous stem and glabrous or rarely short papillate mericarps. This taxon was named 'Dung-geun-ne-ip-gal-kwi' in Korean based on shapes of leaves. We provided a description, illustrations, photographs, and a key of related taxa in Korea. And we propose a new combination (Galium bungei var. miltorrhizum).

<▼1><P>Supplemental Digital Content is available in the text</P></▼1><▼2><P><B>Abstract</B></P><P><B>Background:</B></P><P>Several studies have reported the prognostic value of <SUP>18</SUP>F-fluorodeoxyglucose (<SUP>18</SUP>F-FDG) bone marrow uptake (BMU) measured by <SUP>18</SUP>F-FDG positron emission tomography (<SUP>18</SUP>F-FDG PET) in various cancers. We performed a meta-analysis to evaluate the prognostic value of <SUP>18</SUP>F-FDG BMU in patients with solid tumors.</P><P><B>Methods:</B></P><P>Systematic searches of MEDLINE and Embase databases were performed using the keywords “<SUP>18</SUP>F-FDG,” “bone marrow,” and “prognosis.” All published human studies of the prognostic value of <SUP>18</SUP>F-FDG BMU in patients with solid tumors were searched. The primary outcome was event-free survival (EFS), and the secondary endpoint was overall survival (OS); both of these were extracted directly from each study. The effects of <SUP>18</SUP>F-FDG BMU on survival were assessed by using hazard ratios (HRs).</P><P><B>Results:</B></P><P>Ten studies with 1197 patients (8 studies reporting EFS in 1096 patients and 7 studies reporting OS in 836 patients) were included. In the EFS analysis, the combined HR was 1.75 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.45–2.11, <I>P</I> < .00001) in the random effects model (<I>I</I><SUP>2</SUP> = 51%, <I>P</I> <I>=</I> .05). The combined HR of OS was 1.40 (95% CI: 1.13–1.73, <I>P</I> = .002) in the random effects model (<I>I</I><SUP>2</SUP> = 52%, <I>P</I> = .05).</P><P><B>Conclusion:</B></P><P>This meta-analysis has demonstrated that patients with a low level of <SUP>18</SUP>F-FDG BMU have better EFS and OS than those with a high level of <SUP>18</SUP>F-FDG BMU. Based on our results, we suggest that <SUP>18</SUP>F-FDG BMU could be used as a biomarker for stratifying the risk of tumor progression in patients with solid tumors.</P></▼2>

This paper presents the effect of oxygen plasma process to the ZnO switching layer of Ti/ZnO/ITO resistive random access memory (RRAM). ZnO thin film was formed by spin-coating of the precursor solution and oxygen plasma process was carried out in three different cases: Case 1) Single ZnO film with no oxygen plasma treatment; Case 2) Single ZnO film with oxygen plasma treatment on the top; Case 3) Two ZnO layers and oxygen plasma treatment on the bottom layer. The best resistive switching characteristics were obtained from the case 3) with stable endurance over 1000 DC cycles and stable retention up to 104 s, while the case 2) showed better endurance cycle (~350 cycles) than that (<100) of the case 1). This result may be attributed to the prevention of oxygen ion absorption of Ti layer. XPS analysis indicates that the oxygen plasma process increases the oxygen contents in ZnO film, increasing metal-oxygen bonds and reducing the oxygen vacancies.

Wild rice, Oryza grandiglumis shows hyper-resistance response to pathogen infection. In order to identify genes necessary for defense response in plants, we have carried out a subtractive hybridization coupled with a cDNA macroarray. An acidic PATHOGENESIS-RELATED1 (PR1) gene of the wild rice is highly identical to the acidic PR1 genes of different plant species. The OgPR1a cDNA has an apparent single open reading frame with a predicted molecular mass 40,621 Da and an isoelectic point of 5.14. Both in silico analysis and a transient expression assay in onion epidermal cells revealed that the OgPR1a protein could be localized in intercellular space in plants. The OgPR1a mRNA was strongly transcribed by the exogenous treatment with ethylene and jasmonic acid as well as protein phosphatase inhibitors. Additionally, ectopic expression of the OgPR1a conferred disease resistance on Arabidopsis to the bacterial and fungal infections.

<P/><P>van der Waals heterostructures composed of two different monolayer crystals have recently attracted attention as a powerful and versatile platform for studying fundamental physics, as well as having great potential in future functional devices because of the diversity in the band alignments and the unique interlayer coupling that occurs at the heterojunction interface. However, despite these attractive features, a fundamental understanding of the underlying physics accounting for the effect of interlayer coupling on the interactions between electrons, photons, and phonons in the stacked heterobilayer is still lacking. Here, we demonstrate a detailed analysis of the strain-dependent excitonic behavior of an epitaxially grown MoS<SUB>2</SUB>/WS<SUB>2</SUB> vertical heterostructure under uniaxial tensile and compressive strain that enables the interlayer interactions to be modulated along with the electronic band structure. We find that the strain-modulated interlayer coupling directly affects the characteristic combined vibrational and excitonic properties of each monolayer in the heterobilayer. It is further revealed that the relative photoluminescence intensity ratio of WS<SUB>2</SUB> to MoS<SUB>2</SUB> in our heterobilayer increases monotonically with tensile strain and decreases with compressive strain. We attribute the strain-dependent emission behavior of the heterobilayer to the modulation of the band structure for each monolayer, which is dictated by the alterations in the band gap transitions. These findings present an important pathway toward designing heterostructures and flexible devices.</P>
의사소통 기능 중심의 한국어 교육을 위한 교육 내용 선정 및 배열 연구

Since the communicative approach has been introduced as a major education method in language education, how to improve the learners' communication ability has became major objectives in Korean language education. To apply the objectives to the practical instruction of Korean, a functional communication centered syllabus needs to be designed. The purpose of this study is to select the instructional content for the refusal language function, one of the sub categories of communicative functions, and to discuss the arrangement of refusal functions to be presented in the syllabus, as fundamental research to realize the communication centered syllabus design. To prepare for the instructional content of the refusal language function, this study first selected expressions having refusal functions after analyzing spoken discourse data. Second, based on the instructional content selected, this study arranged the expressions that have refusal functions according to their syntactic complexities and speech transparency related to communicative functions and the politeness of expressions. Last, this study presents the teaching method of speaking refusal functions for students in advanced levels.
