Although atopic dermatitis (AD) is known to be a representative skin disorder, it also affects the systemic immune response. In a recent study, myoblasts were shown to be involved in the immune regulation, but the roles of muscle cells in AD are poorly understood. We aimed to identify the relationship between mitochondria and atopy by genome-wide analysis of skeletal muscles in mice. We induced AD-like symptoms using house dust mite (HDM) extract in NC/Nga mice. The transcriptional profiles of the untreated group and HDM-induced AD-like group were analyzed and compared using microarray, differentially expressed gene and functional pathway analyses, and protein interaction network construction. Our microarray analysis demonstrated that immune response-, calcium handling-, and mitochondrial metabolism-related genes were differentially expressed. In the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) and Gene Ontology pathway analyses, immune response pathways involved in cytokine interaction, nuclear factor-kappa B, and T-cell receptor signaling, calcium handling pathways, and mitochondria metabolism pathways involved in the citrate cycle were significantly upregulated. In protein interaction network analysis, chemokine family-, muscle contraction process-, and immune response-related genes were identified as hub genes with many interactions. In addition, mitochondrial pathways involved in calcium signaling, cardiac muscle contraction, tricarboxylic acid cycle, oxidation-reduction process, and calcium-mediated signaling were significantly stimulated in KEGG and Gene Ontology analyses. Our results provide a comprehensive understanding of the genome-wide transcriptional changes of HDM-induced AD-like symptoms and the indicated genes that could be used as AD clinical biomarkers.

Evaluation of renewable energy power generation in Korea
Seongtae Kim,Sangyoung Kim,MoonGon Park 한국경영교육학회 2009 한국경영교육학회 학술발표대회논문집 Vol.2009 No.12
The rise of public interests in renewable energy causes the rapid expansion of power generation from renewable sources in Korea. In this paper, using discount flow techniques and real option approaches, we examined the future consumer benefits from adopting renewable power generators as the alternative power source. Among many alternative energy options prospects can chose, the case of Photovoltaic technology (PV) based generator is carefully examined since PV generators are the most widely adopted and popular choice in Korea. Through applying the model into an ongoing project in Korea, a viability of the PV based power generator for the residential purpose is verified and possible policies to increase a residential user of a PV generator at the present stage are suggested.
Accounting for Ins and Outs of Unemployment in Korea
Seongtae Kim,Junsang Lee 한국경제연구학회 2014 Korea and the World Economy Vol.15 No.1
This paper studies unemployment dynamics in Korea from 2000 to 2011 by using data from the Economically Active Population Survey (EAPS). We examine the size and cyclicality of both the gross work flows and associated transition rates between the labor market states of employment, unemployment, and inactivity. In order to study the contribution of inflow and outflow rates to variations in the unemployment rate, we decompose unemployment fluctuations into the parts due to changes in inflow and outflow rates. Decomposition methods find that inflow to unemployment contributes substantially to unemployment fluctuations in Korea and particularly inflow through inactivity plays a larger role in unemployment dynamics in Korea, compared to other countries.
Embedding Calculus with Nonword Properties Improves Word Sense Disambiguation
Seongtae Kim(김성태),Sanghoun Song(송상헌) 한국언어학회 2021 언어 Vol.46 No.2
The present study concerns word sense disambiguation in neural language models using the diagnostic classifiers and hierarchical lexical network. First, we conducted an experiment to see whether the neural models are capable of detecting ambiguous nouns and how they do so. Secondly, we carried out an experiment to verify whether the neural models can identify a specific sense of a lexeme and how they do so. For these experiments, we made use of Word2Vec and FastText as the fixed embedding models and BERT as the contextualized model. In addition, we examined the uniformed and weighted sum method by adding nonword properties (senses). In the case of ambiguity detection, BERT with the general embedding showed better performance than the other models. In regards to sense class detection, BERT with nonword properties showed the best performance on lexemes with numerous senses.

Pruritus (itching) is classically defined as an unpleasant cutaneous sensation that leads to scratching behavior. Although the scientific criteria of classification for pruritic diseases are not clear, it can be divided as acute or chronic by duration of symptoms. In this study, we investigated whether skin injury caused by chemical (contact hypersensitivity, CHS) or physical (skin-scratching stimulation, SSS) stimuli causes initial pruritus and analyzed gene expression profiles systemically to determine how changes in skin gene expression in the affected area are related to itching. In both CHS and SSS, we ranked the Gene Ontology Biological Process terms that are generally associated with changes. The factors associated with upregulation were keratinization, inflammatory response and neutrophil chemotaxis. The Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway shows the difference of immune system, cell growth and death, signaling molecules and interactions, and signal transduction pathways. Il1a, Il1b and Il22 were upregulated in the CHS, and Tnf, Tnfrsf1b, Il1b, Il1r1 and Il6 were upregulated in the SSS. Trpc1 channel genes were observed in representative itching-related candidate genes. By comparing and analyzing RNA-sequencing data obtained from the skin tissue of each animal model in these characteristic stages, it is possible to find useful diagnostic markers for the treatment of itching, to diagnose itching causes and to apply customized treatment.

Objectives : This study was carried out to investigate the effectiveness of Bee Venom acupuncture and Electro acupuncture on Cold Hypersensitivity in Hands and Feet. Methods : 5 patients with Cold Hypersensitivity in Hands and Feet were treated by Bee Venom acupuncture and Electro acupuncture. I used Numeral Rating Scale(NRS) to observe the effect of treatment. Results : After the treatment, NRS score of feeling cold in hands and feet were decreased. Conclusion : This study suggests that Bee Venom acupuncture and Electro acupuncture is effective on Cold Hypersensitivity in Hands and Feet, but further studies should be followed.
