        Effect of the Length of Feed Withdrawal on Weight Loss, Yield and Meat Color of Broiler

        The current study was conducted to determine the optimum length of feed withdrawal for pre-harvest broilers. A total of three hundred broilers were sampled from an industrial population, and 30 chicks for each weight group (e.g., 1.5 and 2.5 kg) were randomly assigned to feed withdrawal treatments for 0, 3, 6, 9 and 12 h. Weight loss, yield, muscle pH, objective meat color and weights of gastro intestinal contents, crop, gizzard, provenriculus, small intestine, caecum, and rectum were determined. Live weight loss was significantly (p<0.05) increased as length of feed withdrawal extended. A significant (p<0.05) carcass yield for both 1.5 and 2.5 kg groups coincided after 9 and 6 h feed withdrawal, respectively. Net weights of intestinal contents for crop and gizzard were significantly (p<0.05) reduced by 6 h, and the reduction for proventriculus and small intestine occurred from 3 h. A noticeable effect of feed withdrawal on pH for breast muscle at 3 h postmortem occurred only when chicks were fasted for 3 h of which pH (6.05) was significantly (p<0.05) higher than that for other groups including the control (5.74). There was a linear tendency of higher lightness (Hunter L* value) numerically for chicks fasted for longer periods. The highest coefficient of determinations of regression models to estimate weight loss as a function of fasting period and body weights were achieved, when the models included both linear and quadratic terms for fasting period, and linear term for both 1.5 ($R^2=0.76$) and 2.5 kg ($R^2=0.78$) body weight groups. Given the practical aspect, approximately 1.5 kg of body weight is dominant, weight loss could be predicted by the following function; live weight $loss=26.6-0.28{\times}(fasting period)^2+12.34{\times}pasting\;period-0.012{\times}body\;weight$, $R^2=0.76$. Current data implied that the optimum fasting time for pre-slaughter chicks varied depending on slaughter weight; 6 and 9-h fasting were recommendable for 2.5 and 1.5 kg chicks, with little effect on objective meat color.

        완전 이식형 인공중이의 국내 개발현황

        인구의 고령화가 진행되면서 난청인구는 증가하고 있으며 난청자들은 일반적으로 공기전도형 보청기를 사용하고 있다. 이러한 보청기는 미용문제와 귀 폐쇄감 및 하울링 현상 등으로 인해 난청자들이 기피하고 있으며, 이를 극복하기 위한 방법으로 완전히 은닉할 수 있고 음향 피드백의 영향이 적은 완전 이식형 인공중이 시스템이 전 세계적으로 주목받고 있다. 경북대 첨단 감각기능 회복장치연구센터(Advanced Research Center for Recovery of Human Sensibility, ACRHS)는 보건복지부의 지원과 (주)파이컴의 참여 하에, 약 4년간의 연구 결과로 차동 전자 트랜스듀서를 기반으로 하는 완전 이식형 인공중이 시스템의 시제품 ACROHS-1.5와 그 주변장치로 무선 제어기 및 무선 충전장치를 각각 구현하고 실험을 통해 평가하였다. 현재는 제작된 시제품을 기반으로 한국식품의약품안전청 (KFDA)의 시험을 받기 위한 준비과정에 있다. Recently, persons who have difficulty in hearing are increase as aging of population, conventional hearing aids are generally used by them. In contrast with conventional hearing aids, implantable middle ear hearing devices (IMEHDs) with the advantages of complete concealment, occlusion of ear, and reduction of acoustic feedback are remarkable methods to overcome difficulties of people who have from moderate hearing loss to severe hearing loss. At Advanced Research Center for Recovery of Human Sensibility (ACRHS) in Kyungpook National University (KNU) under the auspices of Korean Ministry of Health & Welfare (KMHW) and PHICOM Co, as the products of their research during 4 years, fully implantable middle ear hearing device (ACROHS-1.5) based on a differential floating mass transducer (DFMT), an implantable microphone, a remote controller, and a wireless charger have been implemented. Each prototype has been evaluated through several experiments. In the present time, we are going to prepare clinical trials for approval of Korean Food and Drug Administration (KFDA).

        ATRX induction by mutant huntingtin via Cdx2 modulates heterochromatin condensation and pathology in Huntington's disease

        Aberrant chromatin remodeling is involved in the pathogenesis of Huntington's disease (HD) but the mechanism is not known. Herein, we report that mutant huntingtin (mtHtt) induces the transcription of alpha thalassemia/mental retardation X linked (ATRX), an ATPase/helicase and SWI/SNF-like chromatin remodeling protein via Cdx-2 activation. ATRX expression was elevated in both a cell line model and transgenic model of HD, and Cdx-2 occupancy of the ATRX promoter was increased in HD. Induction of ATRX expanded the size of promyelocytic leukemia nuclear body (PML-NB) and increased trimethylation of H3K9 (H3K9me3) and condensation of pericentromeric heterochromatin, while knockdown of ATRX decreased PML-NB and H3K9me3 levels. Knockdown of ATRX/dXNP improved the hatch rate of fly embryos expressing mtHtt (Q127). ATRX/dXNP overexpression exacerbated eye degeneration of eye-specific mtHtt (Q127) expressing flies. Our findings suggest that transcriptional alteration of ATRX by mtHtt is involved in pericentromeric heterochromatin condensation and contributes to the pathogenesis of HD.

        지엽류 급여가 임신중인 흑염소에 있어서 유산 발생에 미치는 영향

        지엽류 급여가 임신한 흑염소의 유산 발생에 미치는 영향을 구명하기 위하여 5∼6세인 임신 3∼4개월된 흑염소 20두를 처리구별로 각각 5두씩 배치하여 소나무지엽, 소나무지엽 사일리지, 잣나무발효지엽 그리고 참나무지엽 사일리지를 급여한 결과는 다음과 같다. 일일 조사료 섭취량은 참나무지엽 사일리지 0.36㎏, 소나무지엽 0.28㎏, 소나무지엽 사일리지 0.24㎏ 그리고 발효지엽 0.14㎏으로 발효지엽 급여구가 낮았다. 지엽류 내의 유해균 중 Salmonella와 Fungi는 소나무 지엽류에서는 나타나지 않았으나 참나무지엽 사일리지에서는 각각 7.93×10^3, 11.0×10^1cfu/g로 나타났으며 E. Coli도 11.67×10^1cfu/g로 소나무류 지엽보다 훨씬 높게 나타났으나 (P<.05) 유산발생과는 상관이 없었다. 유산발생율은 발효지엽, 소나무지엽 사일리지 그리고 소나무지엽 급여구에서 각각 60%, 40% 그리고 20%로 나타났으며 참나무지엽 사일리지구는 유산이 발생되지 않았다. 혈청 중 progesterone 농도는 모든 처리구가 분만 4주전까지는 높은 수준이었으나 분만일에는 급감하는 경향이었고 estradiol 농도는 분만시에 감소하였으며 cortisol 농도는 정상 분만한 참나무지엽 사일리지 급여구가 다른 처리구보다 분만당일에 낮은 경향이었다. 이상의 결과를 고려할 때 임신 흑염소에 소나무지엽류를 급여하면 유산이 발생할 가능성이 있음을 제시해 준다. In order to investigate the effect of feeding browses on the incidence of abortion in pregnant Korean native female goats, 20 pregnant does(3∼4 month) were used as experimental animal and they grouped 4 treatments with 5 heads according to experimental diets. Each group was fed pine browse, pine browse silage, fermented pine browse, or oak browse silage. Browses intake a day was 0.36㎏ for oak browse silage, 028㎏ for pine browse, 0.24㎏ for pine browse silage, and 0.14㎏ for fermented pine browse. Salmonella and Fungi were not found in pine browses but they were found in oak browse silage in the amount of 7.93×10^3 and 11.1×10^1 cfu/g, respectively. E. Coliwas found 11.67×10^1 cfu/g in oak browse silage. The incidence of abortion was 60% for fermented pine browse, 40% for pine browse silage, and 20% for pine browse feeding. Abortion did not occur by feeding oak browse silage. Progesterone concentration was similar each other regardless of normal delivery or abortion at delivery day but the concentration of estradiol was higher for normal delivery, concentration of cortisol was decreased until the delivery day in normal but increased in abortion does. The results were suggested that if pine browses are fed to pregnant Korean native goats, abortion was likely to occur.

        Effective charge separation in site-isolated Pt-nanodot deposited PbTiO<sub>3</sub> nanotube arrays for enhanced photoelectrochemical water splitting

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Highly uniform, self-supported PbTiO<SUB>3</SUB> nanotube arrays are fabricated on a transparent conducting glass by an all solution-based, hard-templating procedure. A new concept of site-isolation has been realized by Pt-sol infiltration only in the internal core of deposited nanotube arrays and thus physically separating electron and hole reaction sites on inside and external surface of the nanotubes, respectively. The effective charge separation by the site-isolated Pt-nanodot deposited PbTiO<SUB>3</SUB> nanotube photoanode leads to greatly enhanced photocurrent generation and H<SUB>2</SUB> evolution efficiencies relative to those of the particulate-type photoanode or PbTiO<SUB>3</SUB> nanotube without Pt infiltration in photoelectrochemical water splitting under visible light.         In this paper, we present the development procedure of fully implantable hearing device with round window driving method which is named ACROSS-RW. The system consists of an implantable microphone, a signal processing body, and a vibration transducer. Each component is developed with needs of hearing losses and novel idea for overcoming lacks of previous studies. The performance of the system is evaluated from public certification organization and mechanical engineering laboratory of Stanford University in USA, which is well-known for testing of active middle ear implants. ACROSS-RW can provide natural sound and good cosmetic to people who suffer from hearing loss.

        <P>Droplet deposition processes by the mechanisms of either aerodynamics or electrostatic spray have been widely studied in various applications such as aerosol generators, thin film coatings, and nanoparticle formations. Among the current state-of-art methodologies, air spray deposition can produce small-sized droplets without fine control on their sizes and uniformity in deposited thin films. Conventional electrospray depositions, on the other hand, can fabricate thin films with good uniform with a relatively slow deposition speed. In this paper, a hybrid mechanism by means of aerodynamic and electrostatic deposition is investigated and demonstrated to allow high throughput and improved uniformity for thin film depositions. It utilizes both the electrostatic force and aerodynamic force to atomize the liquid and control the droplet spraying process with good stability/repeatability. A uniform thin TiO2 film has been deposited as the demonstration example using this method. The velocities and trajectories of droplets during the deposition process have been characterized under different experimental parameters by using the technique of particle image velocimetry (PIV). This hybrid thin film fabrication method could be applicable in several industrial processes for better uniformity in making transparent electrodes, solar cells, displays, and automobiles.
