        A phase II study of S-1 monotherapy administered for 2 weeks of a 3-week cycle in advanced gastric cancer patients with poor performance status

        <P>Systemic chemotherapy for gastric cancer is often associated with treatment-related toxicity, which is particularly severe in patients with a poor performance status. In this paper, we describe the first study to evaluate S-1 monotherapy as an option for advanced gastric cancer patients who are not candidates for combination chemotherapy due to poor clinical condition. Fifty-two patients with Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) performance scale 2–3, whose general condition had made use of combination chemotherapy impossible, were enrolled. S-1 was administered to 30 patients as second- or third-line therapy. The initial dose of S-1 was 35 mg m<SUP>−2</SUP>, administered b.i.d for 14 days every 3 weeks. With a median follow-up period of 33 weeks, the median progression-free survival, and overall survival were 11 weeks (95% CI, 8–14) and 33 weeks (95% CI, 19–47), respectively. The overall 1-year survival rate was 29% by intent-to-treat analysis. The overall response rate was 12% (95% CI, 3–21), and the percentage of stable disease was 35%, resulting in the disease control rate of 47% (95% CI, 32–60). Significant drug-related toxicity included grade 3 diarrhoea (14%), anorexia (14%), fatigue (10%), neutropenia (10%), and leucopenia (6%). In conclusion, this study indicated the modest activity of S-1 in gastric cancer patients with poor performance status.</P>

        In<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>:Sn/TiO<sub>2</sub>/CdS heterojunction nanowire array photoanode in photoelectrochemical cells

        The design of photoanode with highly efficient light harvesting and charge collection properties is important in photoelectrochemical (PEC) cell performance for hydrogen production. Here, we report the hierarchical In<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB>:Sn/TiO<SUB>2</SUB>/CdS heterojunction nanowire array photoanode (ITO/TiO<SUB>2</SUB>/CdS-nanowire array photoanode) as it provides a short travel distance for charge carrier and long light absorption pathway by scattering effect. In addition, optical properties and device performance of the ITO/TiO<SUB>2</SUB>/CdS-nanowire array photoanode were compared with the TiO<SUB>2</SUB> nanoparticle/CdS photoanode. The photocatalytic properties for water splitting were measured in the presence of sacrificial agent such as SO<SUB>3</SUB><SUP>2-</SUP> and S<SUP>2-</SUP> ions. Under illumination (AM 1.5G, 100 mW/cm<SUP>2</SUP>), ITO/TiO<SUB>2</SUB>/CdS-nanowire array photoanode exhibits a photocurrent density of 8.36 mA/cm<SUP>2</SUP> at 0 V versus Ag/AgCl, which is four times higher than the TiO<SUB>2</SUB> nanoparticle/CdS photoanode. The maximum applied bias photon-to-current efficiency for the ITO/TiO<SUB>2</SUB>/CdS-nanowire array and the TiO<SUB>2</SUB> nanoparticle/CdS photoanode were 3.33% and 2.09%, respectively. The improved light harvesting and the charge collection properties due to the increased light absorption pathway and reduced electron travel distance by ITO nanowire lead to enhancement of PEC performance.

        CK2α/CSNK2A1 Phosphorylates SIRT6 and Is Involved in the Progression of Breast Carcinoma and Predicts Shorter Survival of Diagnosed Patients

        <P>Recently, the roles of sirtuins (SIRTs) in tumorigenesis have been of interest to oncologists, and protein kinase CK2 alpha 1 (CSNK2A1) has been shown to be involved in tumorigenesis by phosphorylating various proteins, including SIRT1. Therefore, we evaluated the roles of CSNK2A1, SIRT6, and phosphorylated SIRT6 and their relationships in breast carcinoma. Nuclear expression of CSNK2A1 and SIRT6 predicted shorter overall survival and relapse-free survival by multivariate analysis. Inhibition of CSNK2A1 decreased the proliferative and invasive activity of cancer cells. In addition, CSNK2A1 was bound to SIRT6 and phosphorylated SIRT6; evidence for this is provided from immunofluorescence staining, co-immunoprecipitation of CSNK2A1 and SIRT6, a glutathione S-transferase pull-down assay, an in vitro kinase assay, and transfection of mutant CSNK2A1. Knockdown of SIRT6 decreased the proliferation and invasiveness of cancer cells. Overexpression of SIRT6 increased proliferation, but mutation at the Ser338 phosphorylation site of SIRT6 inhibited the proliferation of MCF7 cells. Moreover, both knockdown of SIRT6 and a mutation at the phosphorylation site of SIRT6 decreased expression of matrix metallopeptidase 9, beta-catenin, cyclin D1, and NF-kappa B. Especially, SIRT6 expression was associated with the nuclear localization of B-catenin. This study demonstrates that CSNK2A1 and SIRT6 are indicators of poor prognosis for breast carcinomas and that CSNK2A1-mediated phosphorylation of SIRT6 might be involved in the progression of breast carcinoma.</P>

        Investigation of the electrical and optical properties of InAs/InGaAs dot in a well solar cell

        The electroreflectance (ER) and current-voltage (J-V) of InAs/InGaAs dots in a well (DWELL) solar cell (SC) were measured to examine the optical and electrical properties. To investigate the carrier capturing and escaping effects in the quantum dot (QD) states the above and below optical biases of the GaAs band gap were used. In the reverse bias region of the J-V curve, the tunneling effect in the QD states was observed at low temperature. The ideality factors (n) were calculated from the J-V curves taken from various optical bias intensities (I<SUB>ex</SUB>). The changes in the ideality factor (n) and short circuit current (J<SUB>SC</SUB>) were attributed mainly to carrier capture at low temperature, whereas the carrier escaping effect was dominant at room temperature. ER measurements revealed a decrease in the junction electric field (F<SUB>J</SUB>) due to the photovoltaic effect, which was independent of the optical bias source at the same temperature. At low temperature, the reduction of photovoltaic effect could be explained by the enhancement carrier capturing effect due to the strong carrier confinement in QDs.

        Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between satisfaction toward appearance and the level of mental health among female middle school students. Methods: The total study sample was 432 consisting of 3rd year female students who attended co-educational or girls’ middle schools in Korea. Data were collected from August 8 to August 16, 2012. Statistical analyses were conducted using t-test and Pearson’s Correlation Coefficient with SPSS18.0Windows software. Results: There was correlation between appearance satisfaction and mental health, especially with personal sensitivity (r= -.447, p= .000) and depression (r= -.350, p= .000). The level of mental health significantly differed according to type of school (t= -2.668, p= .008). However, appearance satisfaction did not differ according to type of school. Conclusion: The results of this study implied the importance of appropriate education and nursing intervention which would improve satisfaction toward the appearance of female middle school students.

      • Fabrication of a nanohybrid of conjugated polymer nanoparticles and graphene oxide for biosensing of trypsin

        Conjugated polymers containing triphenylamine group are synthesized via Suzuki coupling polymerization. Fluorescent-conjugated polymer nanoparticles (CPN) are prepared by reprecipitation method using the newly synthesized conjugated polymer. CPN can be encapsulated with polyarginine by electrostatic interaction. The CPN modified with polyarginine exhibit excellent interaction with graphene oxide (GO) which is chemically modified with hydrophilic groups that possesses negative charge, which, in turn, induces the quenching of the fluorescence of CPN upon formation of CPN-GO nanohybrid. Upon exposure to trypsin, the quenched fluorescence is recovered by release of CPN from the nanohybrid, because trypsin cleaves the polyarginine linkage, resulting in weakening of interaction between CPN and GO.       • Organic solar cells using plasmonics of Ag nanoprisms

        We demonstrate plasmonic effects in bulk heterojunction organic solar cells (OSCs) consisting of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and [6,6]-phenyl-C<SUB>61</SUB>-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) by incorporating silver (Ag) triangular shaped nanoparticles (nanoprisms; NPSs) into a poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) buffer layer. The optical absorption and geometric characteristics of the Ag NPSs were investigated in terms of their tunable in-plane dipole local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) bands. The photovoltaic characteristics showed that the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the plasmonic OSCs was enhanced by an increase of short circuit current (J<SUB>sc</SUB>) compared to that of the reference cells without any variation in electrical properties. The enhanced J<SUB>sc</SUB> is directly related to the enhancement of optical absorption efficiency by the LSPR of the Ag NPSs. We measured the photovoltaic characteristics of the plasmonic OSCs with various distances between the Ag NPSs and the P3HT:PCBM active layer, in which the PCEs of the plasmonic OSCs decreased with increasing distance. This suggests that the increase of photocurrent and optical absorption was due to near field enhancement (i.e., intensified incident light on the active layer) by the LSPR of the Ag NPSs.

        Concept of an Electron-beam-driven Neutron Generator and the Power Dissipation in the Target

        A preliminary sketch of a concept for an electron-beam-driven neutron generator has been developed. High-intensity photoneutrons (1016 n·s−1) were to be produced from a tungsten targetthrough electromagnetic cascades by using 50-MeV electron beams. The physics study of theelectron-beam-driven neutron generator, as well as the power dissipation in the target, is presented.

      • 다양한 생물학적 하수처리공정에서의 다환방향족탄화수소류(PAHs)의 제거특성

        Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) can be formed both natural and anthropogenic processes. Both sources are contributors of hazardous compounds, but anthropogenic sources are considerably more damaging to the environment. The purpose of this research obtains a primary data base to treat PAHs-contaminated sewage sludge effectively and properly by figuring out concentrations and origins of PAHs which load in influent of sewage treatment plant. During the experiment period from April 2007 to June 2007, concentrations of PAHs in influent, effluent and dewatered cake at 5 different sewage treatments at City were analysed by using a gas chromatography/mass spectrometer(GC/MS). The volume of samples from influent and effluent was 2 liters. The weight of sample from the dewatered cake was 500g. Ranges of concentrations of PAHs in influent, effluent and dewatered cake were 72.3-83.9 μg/L, 1.1 -6.8 μg/L and 2,669.6-3,491.5 μg/kg respectively. The most abundant compounds of PAHs were fluorene and phenanthrene for all sewage treatment plants. The ratios have been used extensively to distinguish petrogenic or pyrogenic sources of PAHs in the dewatered cake at 5 different sewage treatment plants. It was not easy to di stinguish between petrogenic and pyrogenic sources of PAHs because the PAHs contained both characteristics. 본 연구에서는 하수처리장으로 유입되는 PAHs 의 배출 원을 파악하여 생물학적 처리에 의해 처분되는 하수 슬러지의 경로별 유입 PAHs 의 배출량 및 농도을 추정한 결과 다음과 같은 결론을 얻을 수 있었다. 1. 하수처리장 유입수, 방류수 및 탈수케잌 의 PAHs 농도는 각각 72.3~83.9 μg/L,1.1~6.8 μg/L, 2,669.6 ~ 3,491.5 μg/kg 의 범위를 나타내 었다. 2. 유입수와 탈수케잌 의 경우 모든 하수처리장에서 PAHs 중 각각 fluorene과 phenanthrene 이 가장 높은 농도를 나타내었으며,공장폐수가 유입되는 하수처리장의 경우 벤젠고리 5 - 6개의 고비점 화합물들이 가정하수가 유입되는 하수처리장 에 비하여 다소 높게 나타났다. 3. 모든 하수처리장에서 PAHs 중 저분자량의 LPAHs 제거효율은 85.0% 이상을 나타내었으며,이는 활성슬러지법을 이용한 미생물에 의한 분해로 판단된다. 그러나 고분자량의 HPAHs 제거효율은 활성슬러지법만으로는 67.3% 정도로 낮아 2차 처리가 필요할 것으로 판단된다.

      • 전신 골밀도와 기능 상실 치율 및 하악골 골소주 흡수 양상의 상관 관계

        1993년 3월부터 1995년 6월까지 부산백병원 치과에 내원한 40세 이상 65세 이하의 연령층에 속하는 여성 환자를 대상으로 임상 검사 및 방사선학적 검사를 시행한 결과 치주병에 이환된 치아의 비율이 20% 이하인 30명을 선정하여 이화학적 검사, 치아 파노라마 단층 촬영을 이용한 방사선학적 검사 및 LUNAR DPX 골밀도 측정기를 이용한 전신 골밀도 측정을 시행하였다. 이를 통한 검사 결과를 분석하면서 전신 골밀도 수준과 기능 상실치율 및 하악골 내 골소주의 흡수 양상 간의 상관 관계를 평가하여 다음과 같은 결과를 얻었다. 1.골대사의 지표인 칼슘, 무기인, 알칼리성 인산화효소를 측정하여 전신 골밀도와의 상관 관계를 검증하였으나 유의한 상관 관계는 없었다 (P>0.05). 2.전신 골밀도 분석 결과는 기능 상실치수 및 기능 상실치율에 유의한 상관 관계를 가지고 있었다 (연령에 의한 영향을 보정함)(P=0.0050). 3.30명 환자의 기능 상실치율은 평균 33.7%였으며 치아 파노라마 단층 촬영을 분석한 결과 이공 주변부의 골소주 흡수양상은 현저하여 Diffuse resorption type, Moth-eaten type, Limited(round) resorption type으로 분류 가능하였으나 각 군별로 전신 골밀도 분석 평균의 차이는 없었다(P>0.05). The author selected 30 women whose periodontal disease rate was no more than 20%. They were the patients who have visited at the Dept. of Dentistry in Paik hospital from 1993 to 1995. Biochemical examination, dental panoramic tomogram check and toal body bone density check were done using LUNAR DPX bone densitometer. The results were analysed by total body bone density level, function loss teeth rate and mandibular trabeculi resorption pattern. Then, the author accessed the correlation on the basis of their results. The following observations were made ; 1.Calcium, phosphorus and alkaline phosphatase levels were not correlated with tonal body bone density (P>0.05) 2.There was a good correlation between function loss teeth rate and total body bonedensi ty(corrected by age) (P = 0.0050) 3.We analysed dental panoramic tomograms of 30 women whose periodontal disease rate was no more than 20%. The mean function loss teeth rate in 30 patients was 33.7%. So we could divide mandibular trabeculi resorption pattern into 3-types ; Diffuse resorption type, Moth-eaten type, Limited (round) resorption type. But, there was no correlation between each resorption pattern and total body bonedensity (P>0.05).
