        인간활동에 의한 하천 변화 -서울시 서북권 복개하천을 중심으로-

        The majority of rivers in Seoul were culverted during the urbanization process, leading to a significant alteration of the drainage system. However, there is limited information available regarding the temporal and spatial changes caused by human activities in the small streams in the northwest part of Seoul. Therefore, this study analyzes environmental changes in the northwest streams of Seoul by examining topographical maps from the 1910s and 2021, aerial photographs, administration records, and on-site investigations. Manchocheon was buried in the 1960s and 1970s, followed by Ahyeoncheon and Bongwoncheon in the 1970s, and Hongjecheon was culverted in the 1970s to 1990s as urbanization progressed in Seoul. The installed elevation boxes or pipe culverts were positioned at altitudes of 80-100 meters, aligning with the altitude criteria for the demolition of unauthorized housing on high ground. While the buried streams disappeared from the surface, the linear features of the roads and buildings above the culverted stream are considered to reflect the channel pattern. The exposed lower part of the cover known as Hongje Yuyeon and the Yujin Shopping Center constructed above the buried Hongjecheon, along with Naebu Expressway, collectively form a landscape that holds significance, providing a unique opportunity to observe culverting, deculverting, and semi-covering features in one place. It is expected that the results of this study will raise awareness of buried streams and contribute to the establishment of appropriate urban stream management plans.

        인도네시아 Citarum 강 사굴링 댐 유역의 토양 침식 및 토사 연결성에 대한 고찰

        The Saguling Dam reservoir catchment in the upper Citarum River located in the western part of Java Island, Indonesia, has experienced significant changes in land use over the past 30 years. The forest cover has been decreased by more than half, replaced by croplands and plantations. The major sediment sources to the Saguling Dam reservoir are identified as soil erosion on steep-slope cultivated areas, landslides caused by road construction, and sediment transported from valley slopes with high connectivity. The problem can be addressed through soil conservation measures and the implementation of sediment-blocking devices, such as contour farming, field borders, and filter strips. While the low sediment connectivity in gentle urban river reaches is limited to the dry season, it is expected to increase during periods of heavy rainfall as blockage factors become ineffective. Based on on-site investigations in an area with limited data, this study can provide valuable information for formulating measures to address the sedimentation problem in the data-deficient catchment.

        Intercultural Communicative Competence through Exchanging Correspondence on the Padlet by Elementary Students

        The present study aims to investigate how elementary students’ ICC is affected by exchanging correspondence based on Byram’s ICC model. Particularly, the study employed an online learning platform, Padlet, to see how students from different countries perceive intercultural interaction. To obtain a comprehensive understanding of the students’ intercultural perspectives, the study employed data triangulation, which ensures the validity of qualitative research. Sixteen U.S.A. elementary students and 84 Korean elementary students participated in the exchanging correspondence program from March to November in 2021. The major results from the data were drawn as follows. First, the result of the open-ended questionnaire and students’ reflective notes showed that their intercultural perspectives were affected by exchanging correspondence. This could indicate that technology-based interaction was effective to engage in contextualized intercultural learning. Most dimensions based on Byram’s ICC model, such as affective, cognitive, and skills, were positively affected by this program. Second, teachers’ reflective notes similarly exhibited positive views to promote students’ intercultural awareness. Based on these results, pedagogical implications were drawn.

        납 동위원소 연대측정을 이용한 시화호 내측 우음도의 퇴적환경 복원

        After the completion of the embankment, changes occurred in Lake Sihwa that connected the islands to the mainland. In this study, we tried to analyze the changes in the sedimentary environment recorded in the core samples obtained from the tidal flats south of Ueum Island inside Sihwa Lake. For this purpose, land use and aerial photographs were analyzed by time period in the Sihwa Lake basin, and the sedimentation age of the core samples was determined using the lead-210 dating method, and the change in sedimentation rate was analyzed. As a result of the sedimentation rate change, two large peaks appeared. The first represents a low-energy environment that occurred when seawall construction was completed and restricted sediment runoff to the sea. The second occurred when the reclamation of Ueum Island tidal flats increased and the tidal flats were blocked and a reservoir environment was created at the sampling site. These results indicate that changes in sediment input and outflow conditions near the sampling site had a bigger impact on sedimentation rates in the interior of the tidal flat, located far from the main tidal channel, than the construction of the Shihwa seawall.

        Acute kidney injury in pediatric patients with rhabdomyolysis

        Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the clinical findings in pediatric rhabdomyolysis and the predictive factors for acute kidney injury (AKI) in Korean children. Methods: Medical records of 39 Korean children, who were newly diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis from January 2008 to December 2015, were retrospectively analyzed. The diagnosis was made from the medical history, elevated serum creatinine kinase level >1,000 IU/L, and plasma myoglobin level >150 ng/mL. Patients with muscular dystrophy and myocardial infarction were excluded. Results: The median patient age at diagnosis was 14.0 years (range, 3–18 years), and the male to female ratio was 2.5. The most common presenting symptom was myalgia (n=25, 64.1%), and 14 patients (35.9%) had rhabdomyolysis-induced AKI. Eighteen patients (46.2%) had underlying diseases, such as epilepsy and psychotic disorders. Ten of these patients showed rhabdomyolysis-induced AKI. The common causes of rhabdomyolysis were infection (n=12, 30.7%), exercise (n=9, 23.1%), and trauma (n=8, 20.5%). There was no difference in the distribution of etiology between AKI and non-AKI groups. Five patients in the AKI group showed complete recovery of renal function after stopping renal replacement therapy. The median length of hospitalization was 7.0 days, and no mortality was reported. Compared with the non-AKI group, the AKI group showed higher levels of peak creatinine kinase and myoglobin, without statistical significance. Conclusion: The clinical characteristics of pediatric rhabdomyolysis differ from those observed in adult patients. Children with underlying diseases are more vulnerable to rhabdomyolysis-induced AKI. AKI more likely develops in the presence of a high degree of albuminuria.

        Discrepancy in the Effect of L1 Negative Transfer on L2 Learning: Evidence from Korean Speakers’ Production of Two Adjacent Obstruents in English

        Tensification and coda neutralization are the phonological phenomena that exist in Korean but do not in English. Concerning these L1 phonological rules applied in Korean but not in English, this study attempts to examine the effect of the negative transfer of these L1 phonological rules on Korean speakers’ learning of English as an L2. For this purpose, the speech production task is conducted with a total of 336 tokens, which are produced by five native speakers of English as a control group and 14 Korean speakers as an experimental group. The token for the test is specifically selected from /b/, /d/, /g/, and /s/ in contact with various preceding consonants to see whether Korean tensification and coda neutralization applied in certain context. The major findings from the study are drawn as follows. First, Korean speakers pronounced the English stop sequence with a longer closure duration of the second stop compared with what English speakers did. We claim that this is affected by a Korean phonetic feature, the so-called “timing X-slot insertion”. Nevertheless, we cannot maintain that English target sounds undergo tensification because little difference is found in the other phonetic properties, such as VOT, pitch, and Intensity between English and Korean speakers’ pronunciation of them. Second, as for the fricative sequence of /s#s/, Korean speakers do not employ their L1 rule of coda neutralization for illegal contact of /s#s/. Instead, they can perfectly produce a geminate sound as English speakers do. This discrepancy in the effect of L1 negative transfer on L2 learning can be explained by the learners’ perspective. Recognizing the presence of the empty X-slot is a difficult task for Korean learners because it is phonetically realized as a pause. However, the difference between [t.s’] and [s.s] is not so difficult for them to perceive because it provides them with a prominent perceptual cue.

        공적영역 학교밖교육의 참여 수준과 효과: 가족구조와 배경, 학업성취도 수준에 따른 비교

        This study examines the impact of increased school exposure on academic achievement, particularly among disadvantaged students. In Korea, out-of-school education is provided in the public sector in order to equalize educational opportunities beyond regular schooling. Since the out-of-school education in the public sector could be considered an extension of schooling, it provides an institutional background for evaluating the compensatory role of schools. The analysis considers the likelihood that subgroups, differentiated by factors such as family structure, background, and academic achievement levels, may have different motivations and ways of using public sector out-of-school education. The results indicate that students from single-parent families spend more hours per day in public out-of-school education than students from two-parent families. There is a tendency for those from higher socio-economic families and with lower levels of academic achievements to participate for longer. Nevertheless, the positive effects of out-of-school education in the public sector on academic achievement was greater for single-parent students, as well as for students from lower socio-economic backgrounds and with lower academic achievement levels. The findings suggest that that out-of-school education in the public sector, similar to regular school programs, could improve the academic achievement of disadvantaged students.
