        An inflammatory difference between the gastric antrum, body and fundus was studied in 39 H.pylroi positive duodenal ulcer and 29 H. pylori chronic gastritis patients. Also we studied correlation of H. pylori colony count and inflammatory severity. Patients with newly diagnosed duodenal ulcer and chronic gastritis were endoscoped and two biopsy secimens each taken from the antrum, body and fundus. Although intestinal metaplasia in antrum and inflammatory activity in fundus were more severe in chronic gastritis patients. another inflammatory difference was equally likely to be found between two groups. There was no definite histological inflammatory difference between duodenal ulcer and chronic gastritis patients. A positive correlation was found between the number of H. pylori and the severity of inflammation.

        원위부 신세뇨관성 산증에서 산-염기 운반체의 결손

        The purpose of this study was to elucidate whether the molecular defect of acid-base transporters in renal tubules is related to the functional defect of urinary acidification in distal renal tubular acidosis(RTA). We performed NH₄Cl, furosemide, or bicarbonate loading test to evaluate renal acidification function, and immunohistochemistry using antibodies to H^+ -ATPase, Cl^-/HCO₃^- exchanger(band-3 protein), and Na^+/K^+ -ATPase in kidney tissue in 6 patients with RTA and renal cell carcinoma patients as normal controls. Kidney tissue was obtained either by percutaneous needle biopsy(RTA) or nephrectomy(NC). The results were as follows; 1) In all six RTA patients, proton secretory defect of distal acidification was shown by a failure to lower the urine pH after NHC1 loading or furosemide test or abnormally low urine-blood pCO₂ difference during bicarbonate loading. In two patients with RTA, proximal acidification defect was combined, which was demonstrated by increased fractional excretion of bicarbonate. 2) In mal control, intense H^+ -ATPase and band-3 protein staining was observed in collecting ducts. 3) In distal RTA patients, H6+ -ATPase and band-3 protein staining was not demonstrable or markedly decreased in the intercalated cells of distal nephron. 4) In two patients who had both proximal and distal RTA, H^+ -ATPase staining was markedly decreased in the brush border of proximal tubules as well as the distal nephron. In conclusion, the defect of acid-base transporters in renal tubule was related with the functional defect of urinary acidification in distal RTA.

      • Reduction Effects of Urban Heat Island by Water-Retentive Pavement

        <P>Recently, increasing of impervious surface as concrete or asphalt pavement with urban development brought increasing of air temperature in city. So many researchers have explored ways to reduce the urban heat island effect and water-retentive or water absorbing pavements have been found to be very effective. In this study, to evaluate the reduction effects of urban heat reduction of water-retentive pavement, surface temperature of pavement, air temperature, wind speed and albedo were measured for 3 years (2008~2010, summer period). And the intensity of sensible heat flux was calculated to estimate a influence on air temperature. Experimental results indicated that water-retentive was effective to reduction of air temperature by decreasing of surface temperature of pavement compare to other pavements. This is showed that water-retentive pavement can be contributed to mitigation of urban heat island.</P>

      • SRSF3-regulated miR-132/212 controls cell migration and invasion by targeting YAP1

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Although SRSF3 (Serine/arginine-rich splicing factor 3) plays a significant role in various biological processes, many of its functions still remain unclear. More particularly, little is known about SRSF3's involvement in the regulation of miRNA. In this report, we found that invasive and migratory abilities were inhibited in SRSF3-silenced U2OS and HeLa cells. We also found that a knockdown of SRSF3 results in a decreased expression level of REST (RE1-silencing transcription factor). The silencing of REST increased the expression of primary miR-132/212 as well as their mature forms. In particular, miR-132-3p and miR-212-3p possess an identical seed sequences and a common target gene. Overexpression of miR-132-3p and miR-212-3p suppressed the expression of YAP1 (Yes-associated protein 1) by directly binding to the 3՚UTR of its mRNA. <I>CCND1</I> (Cyclin D1), which acts downstream of YAP1, was downregulated in both miR-132-3p and miR-212-3p-overexpressed cells, in correlation with diminished YAP1 levels. Taken together, our results reveal that SRSF3 controls the expression of the miR-132/212 cluster through regulating REST expression, and that the REST-elicited alteration of miRNA expression is implicated in enabling the migratory and invasive abilities of cancer cells.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> REST is involved in the SRSF3-mediated migration and invasion. </LI> <LI> SRSF3 regulates the expression of miR-132/212 through REST. </LI> <LI> miR-132/212 suppresses YAP1 expression by directly binding to the 3′UTR of its mRNA. </LI> <LI> miR-132/212 inhibits migratory and invasive abilities via downregulation of YAP1/CyclinD1. </LI> <LI> miR-132/212 is responsible for the oncogenic function of SRSF3. </LI> </UL> </P>

      • Estimation of Environment-Friendly Permeable Pavement at Laboratory Test

        <P>The creation of large impervious surface in urban and urbanizing areas commonly leads to multiple impacts on the stream systems including higher peak runoff, reduced infiltration, and increased pollutant loads to streams. Permeable pavements made up of a matrix of concrete blocks with voids offer one solution to the problem of increased stormwater runoff and decreased stream water quality. Experiment results indicate that lower pore size pavement showed a higher runoff reduction rate compared with other pavement. Also, water absorption capability of pavement will drop the surface temperature of pavement. Compared to runoff, the turbidity and phosphorus concentration were lower than 27 [NTU] and 0.5 [mg/L], respectively. It appears that turbidity and hosphorus are concentrated in the pavement void.</P>

      • Thermal Properties of Water-Absorbing and Surface Modified Porous Pavements

        <P>The creation of large impervious surface in urban and urbanizing areas have led to significant impacts on local climate, which is commonly known as urban heat island (UHI). In this study, porous pavements made of recycled sludge were examined as a way to control UHI by lowering the surface temperature. A novel image analysis technique was applied to quantify cooling effect of porous pavement materials without and with water. Although the porous pavement itself has smaller heat capacity than the natural soil, supplying water to the pavement decreased its surface temperature. At its highest point, the difference in surface temperatures without and with water was more than 10 oC. The water was supplied either from the top of the pavement or from the bottom of the pavement using the capillary effects. In both cases, pavement temperature was effectively lowered. The cooling effect of pavement by surface coating using epoxy-based polymers was negligible because surface pores were blocked. Field tests also confirmed the cooling potential of porous pavements.</P>

      • Development of Fiber Filter Media to Control Heavy Metals and Nutrients in Urban Stormwater Runoff

        <P>The pollutants in urban stormwater runoff, which lead to non-point source contamination of water environment around cities, are of great concern. Lignocellulose fiber filters have potential to treat urban stormwater runoff because they are cheap and environmentally friendly, and can effectively remove particulate pollutants. However, the fiber filters alone cannot sufficiently remove soluble pollutants including heavy metals, nitrogen compounds, and phosphate. In this study, techniques for chemical modification of lignocellulose fiber filter were implemented to enhance the treatment efficiency of soluble pollutants in urban stormwater runoff. Using these chemically modified fiber filters together with polymer filter media, a new treatment device was examined to control the pollutants in first flush of stormwater. The results indicated that the filters incorporated into the treatment unit allow the control of urban stormwater runoff with minimal cost and high efficiency.</P>

        Clinical Significance of CLDN18.2 Expression in Metastatic Diffuse-Type Gastric Cancer

        Purpose: Isoform 2 of tight junction protein claudin-18 (CLDN18.2) is a potential target for gastric cancer treatment. A treatment targeting CLDN18.2 has shown promising results in gastric cancer. We investigated the clinical significance of CLDN18.2 and other cell-adherens junction molecules (Rho GTPase-activating protein [RhoGAP] and E-cadherin) in metastatic diffuse-type gastric cancer (mDGC). Materials and Methods: We evaluated CLDN18.2, RhoGAP, and E-cadherin expression using two-plex immunofluorescence and quantitative data analysis of H-scores of 77 consecutive mDGC patients who received first-line platinum-based chemotherapy between March 2015 and February 2017. Results: CLDN18.2 and E-cadherin expression was significantly lower in patients with peritoneal metastasis (PM) than those without PM at the time of diagnosis (P=0.010 and 0.013, respectively), whereas it was significantly higher in patients who never developed PM from diagnosis to death than in those who did (P=0.001 and 0.003, respectively). Meanwhile, CLDN18.2 and E-cadherin expression levels were significantly higher in patients with bone metastasis than in those without bone metastasis (P=0.010 and 0.001, respectively). Moreover, we identified a positive correlation between the expression of CLDN18.2 and E-cadherin (P<0.001), RhoGAP and CLDN18.2 (P=0.004), and RhoGAP and E-cadherin (P=0.001). Conversely, CLDN18.2, RhoGAP, and E-cadherin expression was not associated with chemotherapy response and survival. Conclusions: CLDN18.2 expression was reduced in patients with PM but significantly intact in those with bone metastasis. Furthermore, CLDN18.2 expression was positively correlated with other adherens junction molecules, which is clinically associated with mDGC and PM pathogenesis.
