Malignant fibrous histiocytoma(MFH) is relatively rare in the oro-maxillofacial region, particularly in the oral cavity. MFH usually arise in the extremities, the thigh being the most common site. The incidence of malignant fibrous histiocytoma in bones is rather low compared with that in soft tissues. MFH is predominant in the 40s and 50s. Histologically, the lesion are said to show high cellularity with fibrous stroma, cellular and unclear pleomorphism, and admixture of fibroblast-like spindle cells, which tend to be arranged in whorls or cartwheel or storiform patterns, rounded mononuclear cells and multinucleated giant cells. The cells frequently have abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm which has a foamy or vesicular appearance. Treatment consists of varying combinations of radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and surgery. We have observed a case of malignant fibrous histiocytoma occured in the right maxilla of 32-year-old woman.
Toward Modular Analysis of Supramolecular Protein Assemblies
Kim, Jaehoon,Kim, Jin-Gyun,Yun, Giseok,Lee, Phill-Seung,Kim, Do-Nyun American Chemical Society 2015 Journal of chemical theory and computation Vol.11 No.9

Despite recent advances in molecular simulation technologies, analysis of high-molecular-weight structures is still challenging. Here, we propose an automated model reduction procedure aiming to enable modular analysis of these structures. It employs a component mode synthesis for the reduction of finite element protein models. Reduced models may consist of real biological subunits or artificial partitions whose dynamics is described using the degrees of freedom at the substructural interfaces and a small set of dominant vibrational modes only. Notably, the proper number of dominant modes is automatically determined using a novel estimator for eigenvalue errors without calculating the reference eigensolutions of the full model. The performance of the proposed approach is thoroughly investigated by analyzing 50 representative structures including a crystal structure of GroEL and an electron density map of a ribosome.

Graphic Abstract

ACS Electronic Supporting Info

Fabrication of Oxide Materials for One-Dimensional Photonic Crystals
Phill Jin Kim,이영백,Huang Mei Dong,Lu Yue Hui,Park Sang Yoon,이주열 한국물리학회 2006 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.49 No.3
One-dimensional (1D) photonic crystals (PCs) were fabricated, and their optical properties were investigated both experimentally and theoretically. The fabricated 1D PCs were basically multilay- ered .lms composed of a high-index material (TiO2) and a low-index one (Al2O3). All the PCs were prepared in an ultrahigh-vacuum radio-frequency magnetron-sputtering system. According to the simulation results, if the repetition number is larger than 8, an almost complete photonic bandgap (PBG) can be achieved. The transmittance spectrum of the fabricated PC was measured, and a PBG phenomenon developed at the designed wavelength. The measured spectrum was compared with the spectrum simulated by using the transfer-matrix method and was in good agreement with the simulated one.

To provide more rational design solutions at conceptual design level, axiomatic design method has been applied to solve critical part of a new engineering problem called Mobile Harbor. In the implementation, the Mobile Harbor, a functional harbor system that consists of a vessel with container crane approaches to a container ship anchored in the open sea and establishes a secure mooring between the two vessels to carry out loading and unloading of containers. For this moving harbor system to be able to operate successfully, a reliable and safe strategy to moor and maintain constant distance between the two vessels in winds and waves is required. The design process of automatic ship-to-ship mooring system to satisfy the requirements of establishing and maintaining secure mooring has been managed using axiomatic design principles. Properly defining and disseminating Functional Requirements, clarifying interface requirements between its subsystems, and identifying potential conflict, i.e. functional coupling, at the earliest stage of design as much as possible are all part of what need to be managed in a system design project. In this paper, we discuss the automatic docking system design project under the umbrella of KAIST mobile harbor project to illustrate how the Axiomatic Design process can facilitate design projects for a large and complex engineering system. The solidified design is presented as a result.
An enhanced AMLS method and its performance
Kim, Jin-Gyun,Boo, Seung-Hwan,Lee, Phill-Seung Elsevier 2015 Computer methods in applied mechanics and engineer Vol.287 No.-

Abstract

In this paper, we present an effective new component mode synthesis (CMS) method based on the concept of the automated multi-level substructuring (AMLS) method. Herein, the original transformation matrix of the AMLS method is enhanced by considering the residual mode effect, and the resulting unknown eigenvalue in the formulation is approximated by employing the idea of the improved reduced system (IRS) method. Using the newly defined transformation matrix, we develop an enhanced AMLS method by which original finite element (FE) models can be more precisely approximated by reduced models, and their solution accuracy is significantly improved. The formulation details of the enhanced AMLS method is presented, and its accuracy and computational cost is investigated through numerical examples.

Budd-Chiari syndrome(BCS) can result from a variety of causes. In the fareast asia, BCS is frequently secondary to membranous obstruction of the inferior vena cava(MOVC). It is not confirmed that such membranes are congeni tal or acquired. The importance of its early recognition lies in the potential curability of the disease after surgical treatment. In order to reach a final diagnosis, caval venography with two catheters, one placed above and the other placed below the obstruction, has been the essential procedure. We decided operative procedure according to the findings of the venography-transatrial membranotomy or transatrial membranectomy in membranous obstruction and dorsal cavoatrial bypass grafting in segmental obstruction. From 1969 to 1990, we underwent transatrial membranotomy in 7 cases, transatrial membranectomy in 3 cases, and dorsal cavoatrial bypass in 2 cases. There was no operative mortality. Percutaneous transluminal angioplasty(PTA) c/s stent was done in 2 restenosed patients with good results. Hepatocellular carcinoma was detected in one patients. In long term follow up(mean duration 60.5 mo.), 6 patients(50%) are in good state. We think that transatrial membranectomy using deep hypothermia and circulatory arrest is safe and effective procedure.

Abstract

In this study, we present continuum mechanics based beam elements for linear and nonlinear analyses of multi-layered composite beams with interlayer slips. Nonlinear kinematics of multi-layered beams allowing interlayer slips and the finite element formulation for nonlinear incremental analysis are derived. An important feature of the proposed beam element is an advanced modeling capability that originates from individual modeling of each beam layer using cross-sectional elements and layer degrees of freedom, which are embedded in the beam formulation. Complicated layered beam geometries including arbitrary numbers of layers and interlayers, varying and composite cross-sections, and eccentricities can be easily modeled without additional interface elements or constraints. Further, the proposed beam finite element is successfully applicable for predicting geometric and material nonlinear behaviors of the multi-layered beams including nonlinear load-slip relations at interlayers. The superb performance and predictive capability of the proposed beam element are demonstrated through several representative numerical examples.
