        Removal of methylene blue from aqueous solutions by adsorption onto chemically activated halloysite nanotubes

        This study examines the adsorption behavior of methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solutions onto chemically activated halloysite nanotubes. Adsorption of MB depends greatly on the adsorbent dose, pH, initial concentration,temperature and contact time. The Langmuir and Freundlich models were applied to describe the equilibrium isotherms and the Langmuir model agrees very well with experimental data. The maximum adsorption capacities for MB ranged from 91.32 to 103.63 mg·g^(−1 )between 298 and 318 K. A comparison of kinetic models applied to the adsorption data was evaluated for pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, Elovich and intra-particle diffusion equation. The results showed the adsorption process was well described by the pseudo-second-order and intra-particle diffusion mode. Thermodynamic parameters suggest that the adsorption is spontaneous and endothermic. The obtained results indicated that the product had the potential to be utilized as low-cost and effective alternative for dye removal in wastewater.

        The Surgical Management of Traumatic Lower Cervical Spondylolisthesis with Posterior Percutaneous Pedicle Screw Fixation

        We reported a technical report of traumatic lower cervical spondylolisthesisca used by bilateral pedicle fracture, without neurological compression. The patient was treated with the minimally invasive technique of percutaneous pedicle screw fixation. Fracture healing and normal cervical motion were confirmed by plain films and physical examinations onthe18-monthpostoperatively. The technique of percutaneous pedicle screw fixation might be an alternative strategy for the treatment of traumatic lower cervical spondylolisthesis with pedicle fracture.

        Insights into chlorantraniliprole resistance of Chilo suppressalis: Expression profiles of ATP-binding cassette transporter genes in strains ranging from low- to high-level resistance

        The ATP-binding cassette (ABC) proteins are involved in trans-cellular transport of substances at inverse con centrations. After ABC genes were discovered to be involved in multidrug resistance in humans, increased attention was paid to the role of insect ABC genes in pesticide resistance. Chilo suppressalis, the most important Lepidopteran pest in rice production, has developed resistance to the insecticide chlorantraniliprole. However, few of the ABC genes that contribute to chlorantraniliprole resistance have been studied. Here, 47 genes encoding ABC transporters were identified, including five CsABCA, seven CsABCB, ten CsABCC, two CsABCD, one CsABCE, three CsABCF, 15 CsABCG, and four CsABCH genes. The expression profiles of these transporter genes were determined in three chlorantraniliprole-resistant strains: R1, R2, and HR, with a resistance ratio of 38.8, 110.4, and 249.6, respectively. CsABCA1, -D2, and -H2 were up-regulated in all resistant strains, and the trend in the transcript levels of all 47 CsABC genes fitted a descending curve from R1 to HR. Unexpectedly, CsABCF1, -G11 and -G12 were significantly down-regulated in HR. These results provide new insights into the roles of ABC transporters in chlorantraniliprole resistance in C. suppressalis.

        여성결혼이민자의 사회 진출을 위한 한국어 교수 방안—능력 중심 접근법과 NCS의 활용을 중심으로—

        This study examined the effectiveness of a plan for teaching Korean to help female marriage immigrants to better function in Korean society. As these women stay longer in South Korea, many become increasingly willing to work but are unable to find satisfying jobs due to poor Korean proficiency and job skills. This study examined the effectiveness of a Korean teaching method that also teaches job skills. This method was based on the competency-based approach and NCS. This foundation highlighted the importance of context, objectives, and the combination of competencies. The experimental method included one ‘oral module’ and one ‘literacy module’ and a specific teaching plan for the ‘oral module.’ 본 연구에서는 여성결혼이민자들의 한국 정착 기간이 길어지면서 경제 활동에 대한 욕구도 높아지는 것을 감안하여, 여성결혼이민자들이 사회적 존재로서 사회에서 제 역할을 할 수 있도록 도와주는 한국어 교수 방안을 모색하였다. 이를 위해서 성인 언어 생존 교육에서 자주 활용되고 학습자의 언어 지식보다 언어로 무엇을 할 수 있는가를 중시하는 능력 중심 접근법과 한국의 산업 현장에서 직무 수행에 요구되는 능력을 체계화한 국가직무능력표준(NCS)의 기초 직업 능력을 고찰하였고, 이에 대한 여성결혼이민자의 사회 진출용 한국어 교육에의 적용 가능성을 검토하였다. 그 결과, 사회 진출을 목표로 한 여성결혼이민자를 대상으로 한 능력 중심의 한국어 교육을 진행할 때에는 직장이라는 맥락과 상황의 특수성을 고려하여 명확한 목표 제시를 통해 학습자의 동기를 부여하고 능력 간의 통합을 추구하도록 해야 한다. 이를 위해서는 모듈식 교육이 고려될 수 있는데, 본 연구에서는 여러 상황을 고려한 ‘구어 모듈’과 ‘문어 모듈’을 설계하였고, 이에 맞는 구체적인 교수 방안도 함께 제시하였다.

        실제 학문적 쓰기 과정에서 이중 언어 화자의 언어통하기(translanguaging) 행위에 대한 연구

        This article seeks to apply a case study to figure out how the bilinguals engage in their academic writing process. And I will call the practice that bilingual speakers try to make out his/her text by the term of “translanguaging”. In this study, I triangulated my data source by conducting semi-structured interviews, collecting my co-researchers’ process log and their writing materials. The finding of the study is that, when bilinguals try to make some writing practice, four factors that make influence on their linguistic repertoires: the native tongue/culture experience, the identity, the linguistic ideology, and the interaction with the Community of Participation(COP). To make further meaning of this article, I also try to make some pedagogical implications for Korean writing education. (Korea University)

        Dexmedetomidine promotes the progression of hepatocellular carcinoma through hepatic stellate cell activation

        Dexmedetomidine (DEX) is an anesthetic that is widely used in the clinic, and it has been reported to exhibit paradoxical effects in the progression of multiple solid tumors. In this study, we sought to explore the mechanism by which DEX regulates hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) progression underlying liver fibrosis. We determined the effects of DEX on tumor progression in an orthotopic HCC mouse model of fibrotic liver. A coculture system and a subcutaneous xenograft model involving coimplantation of mouse hepatoma cells (H22) and primary activated hepatic stellate cells (aHSCs) were used to study the effects of DEX on HCC progression. We found that in the preclinical mouse model of liver fibrosis, DEX treatment significantly shortened median survival time and promoted tumor growth, intrahepatic metastasis and pulmonary metastasis. The DEX receptor (ADRA2A) was mainly expressed in aHSCs but was barely detected in HCC cells. DEX dramatically reinforced HCC malignant behaviors in the presence of aHSCs in both the coculture system and the coimplantation mouse model, but DEX alone exerted no significant effects on the malignancy of HCC. Mechanistically, DEX induced IL-6 secretion from aHSCs and promoted HCC progression via STAT3 activation. Our findings provide evidence that the clinical application of DEX may cause undesirable side effects in HCC patients with liver fibrosis.

        Structural Damage Identification Based on Convolutional Neural Network Group Considering the Sensor Fault

        This article proposes a structural damage identification method based on one-dimensional convolutional neural network group considering sensor faults. The method aims to reduce the damage misjudgment caused by sensor faults. In the proposed method, according to the sensor layout, some convolutional neural network sub-models are established to extract the features from raw vibration data for sensor fault diagnosis and structural damage identification; then two convolutional neural networks groups, namely the sensor fault diagnosis group and the damage identification group are designed on the basis of the functions of each sub-model. The sensor fault diagnosis group determines whether the sensor data is abnormal and truncates the abnormal signal. The remaining normal signal are entered into the damage identification group and the final damage identification results are calculated according to the statistical decision module. The effectiveness of the devised method is verified by the IASC–ASCE benchmark structure and laboratory experiments. The results demonstrate that the sensor fault diagnosis and damage identification accuracy of each sub-model ranges from 98.54% to 99.77% and from 87.21% to 91.74% respectively at different noise levels; the damage identification group can reduce the impact of sub-model misjudgment on the structural damage identification. The accuracy of the final damage identification results is 100%. The identification time of all samples in the test set is 53.09 s and 22.93 s, respectively, for SHM benchmark and Laboratory experiment cases. And the average judgment time of each submodel in the sensor fault diagnosis group was 278 and 94 ms, and that of each submodel in the damage identification group was 294 and 105 ms, respectively, for a single test sample, which fulfills the requirements of online damage identification for structural health monitoring.

        G-protein Coupled Estrogen Receptor 1 Expression in Primary Breast Cancers and Its Correlation with Clinicopathological Variables

        Purpose: G-protein coupled estrogen receptor 1 (GPER) probably play important roles in the progression of breast cancer including endocrine therapeutic resistance. We evaluated GPER in primary breast cancers. Methods: Immunohistochemistry was used to detect GPER in paraffin-embedded tissues of primary breast cancers from 423 patients and GPER expression was correlated with clinicopathological factors. Results: GPER was expressed in 63.8% of specimens, coexpressed with estrogen receptor alpha (ERα) in 36.6% of tumors and was positive in 62.5% of the ERα-negative tumors. The expression of GPER had no relationship with the status of ERα, progesterone receptor and HER2. Although the expression of GPER was significantly inversely related with nodal status (p=0.045), no correlation between GPER expression and other clinicopathological variables (age, menstruation status, tumor size, stage, histologic grade, Nottingham Prognostic Index or pathological type) was found. Conclusion: GPER and ERα exhibited independent expression pattern of distribution in primary breast cancers. A long-term follow-up and a more definite molecular phenotype for ER are necessary in confirming studies.

        학문(學問) 목적(目的) 학습자(學習者)의 한국어(韓國語) 학문적(學問的) 문식성(文識性) 실천(實踐)에 대한 질적(質的) 접근

        본 연구는 학문 목적 한국어 학습자가 실제 학문적 맥락에서 학문적 활동을 수행하는데 필요한 학문적 문식성이 어떻게 형성되고 어떤 학문적 실천을 하는지를 탐구하는 데에 목적을 두고 있다. 연구 목적을 달성하기 위해서, 이즈라는 정치외교학과의 22살 중국인 남성 유학생을 대상으로 한 학기동안 사례 연구를 실시하였다. 자료를 수집할 때, ‘심층 면담 자료’, ‘학습 일지’, ‘쓰기 자료’, ‘읽기 자료’ 등으로 자료를 다원화하여, Strauss & Corbin(1998)에서 제안한 코딩 방법으로 자료를 처리·분석하였다. 연구 결과로, 이즈는 제한적인 한국어 능력을 갖고 있음에도 불구하고, 주어진 발제, 시험, 보고서, 과제 등 문식성 활동을 비교적 성공적으로 수행한 것으로 나타나고, 이즈의 학문적 문식성 실천을 가능하게 한 요소로는 ‘개인적 자원 활용’, ‘사회적 네트워크 구축’ 그리고 ‘정체성의 형성과 변화’등이 분석되었다. This study seeks to clarify how the KAP learners utilizing his/her academic literacy practice to complete his/her academic activities in the real academic contexts. I proceeded a case study with my participant ‘IZ’ who is a 22-years-old Chinese student majoring in Politics. To get a ‘thick description’ for IZs’ case, I triangulated my data analysed those data by the method suggested by Strauss & Corbin(1998). As a result, although with limited Korean proficiency, IZ basically could manage all of his academic activities. IZ also struggled to apply his academic and linguistic experience in China, tried to build a social relationship with who could help him academically. Last but not least, the negotiation of identities also made great influences on IZs’ academic literacy practice.
