‘Korean Studies’ is a very controversial concept. As we can see from a pretty much intrinsic question if it can be acknowledged as a ‘Studies’ as well as other issues like limiting its subjects, organizing genealogy, etc., ‘Korean Studies’ interacts with outside and keeps changing like an organism even at this moment. However, numerous researchers will sympathize with the necessity to clearly organize the process that we once have gone through here and now. In this book, the birth of the concept ‘Korean Studies’ and the process of its transition are examined in multilateral ways based on desires that have been inspired inside us and external influences. The 12 articles written by researchers with different specialties, diverse background knowledges, and various interests get exquisitely woven and forms a single image. Matters to be obtained and questioned are as many as the number of diverse discussions currently being made. Is this book, which can be regarded as contemporary opinions, sufficient to serve as a part of the whole picture of the modern ‘Korean Studies’ and sites of knowledge in East Asia? The contents of this book are to be introduced and performances achieved as well as questions arisen in terms of the studies are to be examined in this article from the viewpoint of a spontaneous and active debater.

The association of sexual victimization with self-esteem, depression, and problematic internet use was examined in Korean adolescents. A total of 695 middle and high school students were recruited (413 boys, 282 girls, mean age, 14.06±1.37 years). The participants were administered the Early Trauma Inventory Self Report-Short Form (ETISR-SF), Rosenberg’s Self-Esteem Scale (RSES), the Children’s Depression Inventory (CDI), and Young’s Internet Addiction Test (IAT). The associations between sexual abuse and the level of self-esteem, depressive symptoms, and problematic internet use were analyzed. Adolescents who had experienced sexual abuse showed lower self-esteem, more depressive symptoms, and greater problematic internet use compared with adolescents who had not experienced sexual abuse. In the path model, sexual abuse predicted lower self-esteem (β=-0.11; 95% CI=-0.20, -0.04; p=0.009), which predicted higher depressive symptoms (β=-0.34; 95% CI=-0.40, -0.27; p=0.008). Depressive symptoms predicted problematic internet use in a positive way (β=0.23; 95% CI=0.16-0.29; p=0.013). Sexual abuse also predicted problematic internet use directly (β=0.20; 95% CI=0.12–0.27; p=0.012). The results of the present study indicate that sexually abused adolescents had a higher risk of depression and problematic internet use. For sexually abused adolescents, programs aimed at raising self-esteem and preventing internet addiction, as well as mental health screening, are needed.

Purpose: This study was done to identify the cultural capacity of college nursing students and the relationship of intercultural communication. Methods: The participants were 200 students in colleges of nursing from 6 universities in C city, who understood the purpose of the study and agreed to participate. Collected data were analyzed with t-test, ANOVA, correlation analysis, and stepwise regression analysis using SPSS/WIN 22.0. Results: Cultural sensitivities in this study (r=.372, p<.001), cultural knowledge (r=.399, p=.001), cultural awareness (r=.547, p<.001), and cultural technology (r=.550, p<.001) each showed a statistically significant correlation with intercultural communication skills. Conclusion: The results of this study show that reinforcement of the cultural and intercultural communication ability of college nursing students, in-depth exploration of the cultural area and religious inspection, cultural and professional backgrounds, assessment and consideration of cultural characteristics, nursing diagnosis, and health appropriate to the cultural background. It is suggested that education such as service provision should be conducted systematically.
Effects of Pulsed Electro-Magnetic Fields on Dry Eye Syndrome

Pulsed Electro-Magnetic Fields (PEMF) is known as a technology used in clinical trials for the purpose of pain control and treatment due to its non-invasive, safe, and convenient use. PEMF has been found to affect physiological processes such as increased cell activity, depolarization of cell membranes and changes in membrane potential, improvement of inflammation, and improvement of blood flow, but the specific mechanism is not clearly defined. Pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMFs) are emerging as innovative therapies for the control of inflammation that can significantly affect tissue regeneration. Dry eye syndrome is a disorder of the tear film caused by insufficient or excessive evaporation of tears, which causes damage to the ocular surface between the eyelids and is associated with symptoms of ocular discomfort. The causes of dry eye syndrome are diverse, including aging, chronic conjunctivitis, decreased female hormones, and environmental factors. Among them, we focused on dry eye syndrome caused by chronic conjunctivitis. When cells that function as mucous glands in the conjunctiva decrease due to chronic inflammation, mucus secretion decreases. As a result, water cannot be held in the mucus layer, and the aqueous layer of the tear layer flows out through the tear duct into the nose. In this study, we tried to observe the improvement effect of dry eye syndrome through stimulation of PEMF. This study was conducted with an approval from the Institutional Review Board at the Mirae campus of the Yonsei University (Protocol 1041849-202101-BM-019-03). Experiment was conducted on 9 subjects with dry eye syndrome in their 20s. The subjects had previously been diagnosed with dry eye syndrome or had been diagnosed with conjunctivitis or the like. It was observed continuously for 5 days, and PEMF (20Hz, 7mT) equipment was worn under the eyelids for 30 minutes every day. Dry eye examination was performed at the hospital on the 1st and 5th days. There are two tests for dry eye syndrome, Break-Up Time test and Schirmer test. Schirmer Test (ST) measures the amount of tears secreted in 5 minutes by hanging a piece of paper of a certain length on the lower eyelid. Break-Up Time (BUT) test measures the time it takes for the tear film to break through an ophthalmic microscope and fluorescein. Subjective evaluation of subjects through a survey was also carried out. 〈그림 본문참조〉 In the survey, it showed a decrease of 31.008% from 14.333 points to 9.898 points on average, and 7 out of 9 people showed a subjective improvement effect. In ST, 4 out of 9 patients showed an increase in tear volume in the left and right eyes. In BUT test, 3 out of 9 subjects increased the BUT value 5 days after PEMF stimulation. It was confirmed that all three people with improved BUT showed an improvement effect in the survey and ST. The results of this study may be of limited improvement in subjects with chronic conjunctivitis. It seems that long-term monitoring for improvement of dry eye syndrome is necessary, and additional research on this is also required.

We examined the association between the selected polymorphisms in two candidate genes, the arsenite methyltransferase gene (AS3MT, rs11191454) and the inter-α-trypsin inhibitors heavy chain-3 gene (ITIH3, rs2535629), and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in a Korean population. A total of 238 patients with ADHD, along with both of their biological parents, were recruited. The children were administered intelligence quotient tests, whereas their parents completed the Child Behavior Checklist. In the transmission disequilibrium test on 181 trios, we found overtransmission of the A allele at the AS3MT rs11191454 polymorphism in children with ADHD (&khgr;=8.81, P=0.003). However, there was no preferential transmission at the ITIH3 rs52535629 polymorphism (&khgr;=0.14, P=0.707). Our results provide preliminary evidence for the overtransmission of the A allele at the AS3MT rs11191454 polymorphism in ADHD.

Abstract

We examined the association of body mass index (BMI), body weight perception, and weight control behaviors with problematic Internet use in a nationwide sample of Korean adolescents. Cross-sectional data from the 2010 Korean Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey collected from 37,041 boys and 33,655 girls in middle- and high- schools (grades 7–12) were analyzed. Participants were classified into groups based on BMI (underweight, normal weight, overweight, and obese), body weight perception (underweight, normal weight, and overweight), and weight control behavior (no weight control behavior, appropriate weight control behavior, inappropriate weight control behavior). The risk of problematic Internet use was assessed with the Korean Internet Addiction Proneness Scale for Youth-Short Form. Both boys and girls with inappropriate weight control behavior were more likely to have problematic Internet use. Underweight, overweight, and obese boys and girls were more likely to have problematic Internet use. For both boys and girls, subjective perception of underweight and overweight were positively associated with problematic Internet use. Given the negative effect of inappropriate weight control behavior, special attention needs to be given to adolescents’ inappropriate weight control behavior, and an educational intervention for adolescents to control their weight in healthy ways is needed.

Highlights

Being underweight and obese was positively associated with problematic Internet use.

Subjective perceptions of being underweight and overweight were positively associated with problematic Internet use.

Inappropriate weight control was positively associated, but appropriate weight control was negatively associated with problematic Internet use.
