We reviewed 30 cases of superior vena cava syndrome in adult patients who were seen at the Yeungnam University Hospital from January 1985 to June 1990. The results were as follows : 1. The male-to-female ratio was 6.5 : 1, and the most patients were in the age group between the sixth and seventh decades. 2. The most common symptoms were dyspnea (87%) and followed by cough (63%), facial swelling(63%) and chest pain (44%) and the physical signs were dilated neck vein (97%), facial edema(93%) and facial flushing (45%) in order of frequency. 3. The simple chest x-ray findings were superior mediastinal widening (90%), right hilar mass (77%) and pleural effusion (31%). 4. Diagnosis was made by history and physical examination(100%), chest C-T scan (100%), simple chest x-ray (97%), bronchoscopy with biopsy (40%) and so on. 5. 21 cases of patients were confirmed by histology : 14 cases (46%) of bronchogenic ca, 4 cases (14%) of lymphoma, 3 cases (10%) of metastic lung ca. Of bronchogenic ca, small cell ca was 7 cases (23%). squamous cell ca, 5 cases (17%), and unclassified ca was 2 cases (6%). 6. In response of treatment, the clinical improvement was achieved in 18 cases with radiotherapy alone, 1 case with chemotherapy only, and 6 cases with radio-chemotherapy.
How fullerenes inhibit the amyloid fibril formation of hen lysozyme

The inhibition of protein unfolding and self-assembly into fibrils using nanoparticles is a potential medicinalstrategy to impede amyloid-related diseases. Among various nanoparticles, fullerenes have attractedgreat interest because of their inhibition effect on protein fibrillization, but the mechanism of the inhibitionprocess is not properly understood. To explore the inhibition mechanisms, molecular dynamics simulationsof hen egg white lysozyme (HEWL), a model of an amyloid-prone protein, have been performedin the presence of varied C60 concentrations. It is found that the structural fluctuation of HEWL decreasesas the concentration of C60 increases. As the concentration of C60 increases, clustered fullerene aggregatesare formed via hydrophobic interaction rather than interacting with HEWL, and HEWL was adsorbed onthe surface of the fullerene aggregates. The maintenance of the structure and the inhibition of HEWL fibrillizationby C60 is also experimentally confirmed by thioflavin T fluorescence assays and atomic forcemicroscopy. Thus, two independent methods confirmed that C60 is able to inhibit the formation of amyloidfibrils in a dose-dependent manner. This study is an initial step in understanding by which mechanismC60 inhibits HEWL fibrillization, allowing to further design strategies for amyloid inhibition basedon fullerenes and other nanoparticles.
A Case of Postoperative Herpes Simplex Pneumonia

Herpes simplex virus [HSV] esophagitis is a rare disease and most of cases are reported in the immunocompromised patients. We report a case of fatal HSV infection started from herpes labialis and esophagitis. She had initially suffered from perioral ulcer, esophagitis, and interstitial pneumonitis later and eventually died of respiratory insufficiency one month later after the aneurysmal surgery. She did not have any immunocompromised medical history and also had no evidence of herpes encephalitis in laboratory study and magnetic resonance image [MRI]. With the availability of effective agents for the treatment of HSV infection, early recognition of HSV esophagitis is important because it may be clinically confused with Cushing ulcer and may be complicated with a fatal pneumonitis.
Formation of a Unique 1:2 Calcium-Calixquinone Complex in Aqueous Media

We report the complexation behavior of calix[4]arenemonoquinone-triacid (CTAQ), which is an electroactive and water-soluble receptor for calcium ion. UV-visible and NMR spectroscopic studies revealed that CTAQ in aqueous media forms 1:2 as well as 1:1 (metal ion:CTAQ) stoichiometric complexes with $Ca^{2+}$, $Sr^{2+}$, and $Ba^{2+}$ ions. The nonlinear fitting of titration curves based on UV-visible absorption spectra showed that the binding constants of CTAQ for $Ca^{2+}$ ion are 4 $({\pm}2){\times}10^6\;M^{-1}$ for 1:1 and 1.4 $({\pm}0.5){\times}10^{11}\;M^{-2}$ for 1:2 complex. NMR conformational studies and the titration curves corroborate that the $Ca^{2+}$:CTAQ complex in aqueous solution is not present in the form of merely 1:1 one, being consistent with UV-visible spectrophotometric results. The Monte Carlo simulation supports the presence of a stable conformer of 1:2 complexes in which a $Ca^{2+}$ ion is interposed between two CTAQs at the global minimum. This is the first model of 1:2 stoichiometric complex of calix[4]arene and alkaline earth ions in aqueous media.

This paper describes technical characteristics of ultra high-resolution image from a newly released commercial digital camera DMC II. In addition, the results of resolution test, aerial triangulation and geometric accuracy as a part of mapping potential of DMC II image are also presented. The study results showed that the quality of DMC II image is overwhelmingly superior to that of the first generation digital aerial camera in every respect.
地方自治實施를 위한 財政自立度 提高方案 : 淸州市를 中心으로 The case of Chong Ju City

In this paper, this writer try to show current self-sufficient rate of Chong Ju City Gov't finance and to find the ways of raising it in connection with in-comming local autonomy implementation. Chong Ju City's self-sufficient rate of finance is ranging from 49.2% (FY 1977) to 82.2% (FY 1984) during the last ten years. The preportion of Local-tax ravenue among General Gov't renvenues is ranging from 11.7% (FY 1979) to 38.6% (FY 1976) during the same periods. Both the self-sufficient rate of finance and proportion of local tax ravenues among General gov't ravenues show large fluctuations which are caused by ustable non-tax ravenues and central gov't subsidy. Therefore we can not deny the fact that there are not self-sufficient bases for the implementation of local autonomy. The study results, which were drawn under the these circumstances show that without institutional reforms about taxbases, Local Gou't finance structure will not be changed despite social changes and its demands. We can not solve local finance problems by dealing with them only form the local finance point of view. Finnally I think that what is the most important issue in local finnance is that how we can allocate available resources between central Gov't and Local Gov't Self-sufficient local finance can be attained when revenue resources of Gov't are allocated between central Gov't and Local Gov't accorling to the its functions.
