        The purpose of this research was to examine the possibility of biodegradation of the hazardous wastewater -formaldehyde wastewater- and to determine the engineering design parameters by the activated sludge process. The main results of this experimental study are as follows: 1) It was indicated that formaldehyde wastewater can be treated by Activated sludge, and to accmplish the COD removal efficiency 90%, the HRT was above 11 days, COD volume loaling was below 096㎏ COD/㎥·d, and F/M_(v) ratio would be expected to have below 0.45 2) Oxygen reguirment was above 0.81㎏ O₂/㎏ CODrm and Sludge production was about 0.1㎏ VSS/㎏ CODrm.

        The competition for substrate between sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) and methane producing bacteria (MPB), and the inhibitory effects of sulfide produced from microbial sulfate reduction on sulfate reducers and methanogens were investigated in this study by using laboratory digesters. The main results of this experimental study are as follows ; 1) When SRB and MPB was co-cultured, the microbial sulfate reduction occurred first, so that the inhibition of volatile acid on MPB were eliminated. 2) When SRB and MPB competed each other for substrate, the shorter the sludge retention time (SRT), the more dominate species the SRB were. 3) The limit SRT for MPB was above 4.5days, and that for SRB was near 2days. 4) When the carbon source (COD) loading was kept at the same level in comparison with different SO₄^(2-) Loading, biogas production was not inhibited when the ratio of COD to SO₄^(2-) Was above 2.7, that was begun to be inhibited when the ratio was under 2.7, and that was not occurred when the ratio was under 1.0. 5) When the sulfate ion loading was kept at the same level with different carbon source (COD) loading, the biogas production was begun to be retarded when the ratio of COD to SO₄^(2-) Was under 1.0, and that was not occurred when the ratio was 0.5. 6) Finally, when influent concenration of SO₄^(2-) was 1200㎎/l, or sulfide concentration in the digester was above 130㎎/l, the biogas production was begun to be retared. As the influent concentration of SO₄^(2-) was above 2000㎎/l, or the concentration of sulfide in the digester was near 180㎎/l, the biogas production was completely inhibited.

        This study was performed for composting of septic tank sludge by batch type enclosed composter. The conditions of each element were the mixed rate 0.5:1∼4:1 of septic tank sludge rice-polishing, initial Moisture Content rate of 50 to 70%, C/N ratio of 8 to 43, and 0.25∼1.51/min·㎏ per volatile solids of Air Quantity. The results of this experiment are as follows: (1) The condition of the most successful composting was mixed rate 2.1 of septic tank sludge and rice-polishings in each sample. (2) The range of the optimum moisture content was 60∼65% simultaneously, mixed rate was 2:1-3:1 the temperature of compost pile for hygienic stabilization was sustained for minimum seven days. (3) The range of optimum C/N ratio 30∼35 showed the fastest and most successful composting . (4) 0.25 l/min-㎏ VS Air Quantity was the optimum of composting. (5) In a day or two, the maximum temperature of 48∼54℃ showed that after inputing composter under the adequate condition of each element: Moisture Content, Air Quantity, pH, C/N ratio etc. The maximum CO₂ production quantity with temperature variation was 8∼11% at 44∼50℃.

      • 各種藥劑가 肝吸蟲에 미치는 영향에 관한 電子顯微鏡的 硏究

        The electron-microscopic studies were undertaken to observe the morphological changes of Clonorchis sinensis obtained from experimentally infected rats treated with hexachlorophene, Hotol(1,4 bis-trichloromethybenzol), niclofolan and praziquantel which are known as highly active drugs against C. sinensis. For this study the rats were artificially infectedwith metacer-cariae isolated from Pseudorabora parva and were given a single oral dose of 50㎎/㎏ of hexachlorophene, 400㎎/㎏ of Hotol, 4㎎/㎏ of niclofolan and 600㎎/㎏ of praziquantel at 5 weeks infection. The Clonorchis worms were collected from the bile ducts of the rats which were autopsied at 24 hours after treatment with each drugs. With the collected worms, the fine structure was studied by means of scanning and transmission electron microscope. The findings of the observation were compared with those of each groups and untreated control groups. The results are as follows : 1. In the groups treated with praziquantel and hexachlorophene, the worms showed the elongation of oral-ventral suckers space, and the balloon shape structure was formed at anterior part of the worm. However in the groups treated with niclofolan and Hetol, the balloon shape structure was not formed. The lack of intestinal content was observed in the worms from the group treated with Hetol. 2. By the scanning electron microscopic observation, the bleb-like structures were observed on the sensory papillae around the two suckers of the worms from the group treated with praziquantel. In the worms from the group treated with niclofolan, the bleb-like structures were observed on the tegumental ridges near the ventral sucker, but the blebs were not formed on the sensory papillae. However, in the worms from the group treated with hexachlorophene, a few of blebs were found on the tegumental ridges. The worms from the group treated with Hetol were not observed any morphologicla changes by the scanning electron microscope, but in the most of worms many sperms appeared on the ventral sucker. 3. By the transmission electron microscopic observation in the tegumental syncytium, the mitochondrial degenerations were observed in the worms from the groups treated with niclofolan and hexachlorophene. In the worms from the group treated with praziquanted, the degeneration of mitochondriae in the tegumental syncytium, marked vacuolization in the tegumental basement, and the separation of basement membrane from the tegumental syncytium were also observed. 4. By the transmission electron microscopic observation in the intestinal lumen, the separation of intestinal and basement membrane was observed in the worms from the group treated with praziquantel, and the degeneration of the intestinal microvilli was observed in the worms from the groups treated with niclofolan, hexachlorophene and Hetol. Especially in the worms from the group treated with Hetol, marked degeneration of the intestinal microvilli and the "bubble" formation were also observed in the intestinal lumen.

        Inhibitory activity of Euonymus alatus against alpha-glucosidase in vitro and in vivo

        The major goal in the treatment of diabetes mellitus is to achieve near-normal glycemic control. To optimize both fasting blood glucose and postprandial glucose levels is important in keeping blood glucose levels as close to normal as possible. α-Glucosidase is the enzyme that digests dietary carbohydrate, and inhibition of this enzyme could suppress postprandial hyperglycemia. The purpose of this study was to test the inhibitory activity of methanol extract of Euonymus alatus on α-glucosidase in vitro and in vivo to evaluate its possible use as an anti-diabetic agent. Yeast α-glucosidase inhibitory activities of methanol extract of E. alatus were measured at concentrations of 0.50, 0.25, 0.10, and 0.05 ㎎/㎖. The ability of E. alatus to lower postprandial glucose was studied in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. A starch solution (1 g/㎏) with and without E. alatus extract (500 ㎎/㎏) was administered to diabetic rats by gastric intubation after an overnight fast. Plasma glucose levels were measured at 30, 60, 90, 120, 180, and 240 min. Plasma glucose levels were expressed in increments from baseline, and incremental areas under the response curve were calculated. Extract of E. alatus, which had an IC50 value of 0.272 ㎎/㎖, inhibited yeast α-glucosidase activity in a concentration-dependent manner. A single oral dose of E. alatus extract significantly inhibited increases in blood glucose levels at 60 and 90 min (p<0.05) and significantly decreased incremental response areas under the glycemic response curve (p<0.05). These results suggest that E. alatus has an antihyperglycemic effect by inhibiting α-glucosidase activity in this animal model of diabetes mellitus.

        Comparison and Validation of 10 Equations Including a Novel Method for Estimation of LDL-cholesterol in a 168,212 Asian Population

        <▼1><P>Supplemental Digital Content is available in the text</P></▼1><▼2><P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) is frequently estimated using the empirical Friedewald equation. We compared the accuracy of the novel equation named as the 180-cell method (180-c), which estimates LDL-C using a stratification approach, to those of 9 previously suggested formulas, including the Friedewald equation.</P><P>We compared the accuracy of 10 equations by calculating intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and weighted kappa index in relation to direct LDL-C measurement values. Two independent populations used in the validation were the Severance Hospital LDL-C (SHL) registry (n = 164,358) and the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) 2009 to 2010 (n = 3,854), each representing the hospital patient population and the general Korean population, respectively.</P><P>The 180-c and DeLong equations showed the highest ICCs, indicating the best agreement with direct LDL-C measurement. The 180-c and Chen equations showed the highest kappa indices. For the hypertriglyceridemic subpopulation from SHL, the 180-c equation showed the best agreement with direct LDL-C measurement in terms of ICC.</P><P>We compared the novel 180-c method for LDL-C estimation with 9 previous formulas in a non-US population as the first external validation. The 180-c equation, with Chen equation, appeared to be more accurate than the Friedewald equation. Although the DeLong equation showed better performance in the hypertriglyceridemic subpopulation, the 180-c equation performed appropriately in Asian population.</P></▼2>

        전두개저의 중앙부 병변에 대한 광범위전두골 접근법

        Relatively huge lesions in the parasellar and midline anterior skull base region are difficult to approach for radical procedures. To minimize brain retraction and achieve excellent exposure for safe manipulation within these regions, the authors have performed an extended frontal approach, a bifrontal craniotomy and a bilateral orbitofrontal osteotomy in 11 patients, and an additional transfacial maxillotomy in 1 patient. An additional removal of the orbital rim offers excellent visualization and permits unhindered surgical manipulation including postoperative reconstruction at the anterior skull base. But disadvantages include prolonged operative time and frequent bilateral olfactory denervation. Six patients with benign tumors, two patients with malignant tumors, one patient with hematoma in the ehtmoid and sphenoid sinuses, and three patients with delayed traumatic CSF rhinorrheas were operated on using this approaches, with good results. The operative technique and its results are detailed.
