        Zerumbone suppresses EGF-induced CD44 expression through the inhibition of STAT3 in breast cancer cells

        <P>Expression of the CD44 gene is upregulated in breast cancer cells and is correlated with patient survival. Aberrant CD44 expression promotes tumor progression and metastasis. In the present study, we investigated the role of zerumbone (ZER) on regulatory mechanisms of CD44 expression in breast cancer cells. Our results showed that CD44 expression was significantly increased by epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) ligands in SKBR3 breast cancer cells. In contrast, EGF-induced CD44 expression was decreased by a MEK1/2 inhibitor, UO126, or STAT3 inhibitor, STAT3 VI, respectively. Notably, ZER downregulated the basal level of CD44 expression in CD44+ breast cancer cells. In addition, the induction of CD44 expression by EGFR ligands, EGF or TGF-α, was markedly decreased by ZER treatment. Finally, we investigated the inhibitory mechanism of ZER on EGF-induced CD44 expression. Our results showed that EGF-induced phosphorylation of STAT3 was completely suppressed by ZER. Collectively, ZER suppressed EGF-induced CD44 expression through inhibition of the STAT3 pathway. Therefore, we suggested that ZER may act as a promising therapeutic drug for the treatment of breast cancer.</P>

      • Improved Efficiency of Inverted Organic Light-Emitting Diodes Using Tin Dioxide Nanoparticles as an Electron Injection Layer

        <P>We demonstrated highly efficient inverted bottom-emission organic light-emitting diodes (IBOLEDs) using tin dioxide (SnO<SUB>2</SUB>) nanoparticles (NPs) as an electron injection layer at the interface between the indium tin oxide (ITO) cathode and the organic electron transport layer. The SnO<SUB>2</SUB> NP layer can facilitate the electron injection since the conduction band energy level of SnO<SUB>2</SUB> NPs (−3.6 eV) is located between the work function of ITO (4.8 eV) and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy level of typical electron transporting molecules (−2.5 to −3.5 eV). As a result, the IBOLEDs with the SnO<SUB>2</SUB> NPs exhibited a decrease of the driving voltage by 7 V at 1000 cd/m<SUP>2</SUP> compared to the device without SnO<SUB>2</SUB> NPs. They also showed a significantly enhanced luminous current efficiency of 51.1 cd/A (corresponds to the external quantum efficiency of 15.6%) at the same brightness, which is about two times higher values than that of the device without SnO<SUB>2</SUB> NPs. We also measured the angular dependence of irradiance and electroluminescence (EL) spectra in the devices with SnO<SUB>2</SUB> NPs and found that they had a nearly Lambertian emission profile and few shift in EL spectrum through the entire viewing angles, which are considered as remarkable and essential results for the application of OLEDs to display devices.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/aamick/2013/aamick.2013.5.issue-6/am302787y/production/images/medium/am-2012-02787y_0008.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/am302787y'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>

      • Analysis of Photovoltaic Properties of a Perovskite Solar Cell: Impact of Recombination, Space Charge, Exciton, and Disorder

        <P>We present the analysis of photovoltaic properties in perovskite solar cells to explore the impact of excitonic features, disorder, recombination, and space charge effects using temperature and photo-intensity dependence. Photo-intensity dependence reveals an enhancement of classical Einstein relation due to the presence of traps and formation of space charge effects resulting in reduced conductivity. Exciton versus free charge density upon photo-excitation is analyzed from temperature dependence of photocurrent. Temperature dependence of V-OC is excellently explained by considering a combined energetic disorder in a solar cell, and a moderately high value of variance similar to 125 meV is obtained.</P>

        Effects of Language Intervention based on Augmented Reality for Verbal Expression in Children with Expressive Language Delay

        배경 및 목적: 언어발달이 느린 아동들은 어휘 습득 시 행동이나 상태 변화를 나타내는 동사 학습에 어려움을 보인다. 본 연구에서는 동사 학습의 용이성을 증대하기 위하여 표현언어발달지연아동에게 현실 환경에서 동작을 직접 보여주는 증강현실 기반 언어중재를 제공하여 동사 표현 정반응률과 일반화에 미치는 영향을 살펴보았다. 방법: 생활연령에 비하여 표현언어가 지연된 아동 3명(생활연령 평균 3세 6개월)에게 총 84개의 동사를 증강현실로 구현한 증강현실 기반 언어중재를 실시하였다. 대상자 간 중다기초선설계를 이용하여 기초선, 중재, 유지 단계에서 7개씩의 목표동사를 증강현실로 구현하여 동사 표현 정반응률을 살펴보았다. 또한 일반화를 알아보기 위하여 목표동사를 그림카드로 주양육자가 제시하였을 때에도 정반응하는지 살펴보았다. 결과: 연구대상 모두 기초선 단계에 비하여 중재 단계와 유지 단계에서 정반응률이 증가하였으며 치료실 이외의 장소에서 그림카드로 제시하였을 때에도 일반화하여 목표동사를 발화할 수 있는 것으로 나타났다. 논의 및 결론: 증강현실 기반 언어중재는 표현언어발달지연 아동의 동사 표현을 증가시키는 데 효과적이며 다양한 장애군에도 적용할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다. Objectives: When learning verbs that represent the movement, this study hypothesized that language intervention based on augmented reality (AR) can be more effective than picture cards and examined what effect AR has on the improving verbal expression of children with delayed expressive-language development. The study developed an application using AR that mixed reality with virtual reality in an application for children with expressive language delay. Methods: The subjects were three children (mean chronological age, 3.6 years) whose expressive language abilities were delayed more than 6 months beyond than their chronological age. Eighty-four goal verbs were presented using AR in a multiple baseline design, along with face-to-face training to improve verbal expressions. Results: Children with expessive language delay showed increased accuracy in verb expression through language intervention based on AR. Additionally, the children generalized their improvements by expressing goal verbs even when they were presented as picture cards. Conclusion: This study shows that language intervention based on AR is effective for improving the verbal expression of children with expressive language delay. Utilizing to represent the movement and status of verbs has positive effects on verbal expression.

      • High-conductivity electrolyte gate dielectrics based on poly(styrene-co-methyl methacrylate)/ionic liquid

        <P>We report self-assembly of a statistical copolymer poly(styrene-<I>co</I>-methyl methacrylate) (P(S-<I>co</I>-MMA)) containing ionic liquid (IL)-philic methyl methacrylate (MMA) and IL-phobic styrene (S) repeating units in IL for fabrication of electrolyte-gated organic transistors. P(S-<I>co</I>-MMA)s with high MMA contents were synthesized by copolymerization of styrene and MMA <I>via</I> a reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) process, and their behavior in 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([EMI][TFSI]) was investigated. While dynamic light scattering analysis showed formation of a micellar solution at low concentration, the elastic modulus of the viscoelastic solution increased significantly more than the loss modulus at high concentration. Small angle X-ray scattering analysis suggested ill-defined phase separation between PS-rich segments and PS-lean segments swollen in [EMI][TFSI]. The resulting P(S-<I>co</I>-MMA)/[EMI][TFSI] mixture exhibited increased ionic conductivity compared to the PS-<I>b</I>-PMMA-<I>b</I>-PS block polymer gel, as well as superior device performance in transistor gating experiments.</P>

        장애인스포츠 선수의 경기력 향상을 위한 체계적 문헌고찰

        매년 장애인체육에 대한 지원을 꾸준히 늘리고 있음에도 불구하고 장애인스포츠 선수를 위한 연구기반 과학적 훈련과 지원체계 구축이 아직은 부족한 실정이다(김지태, 홍미화, 오아라, 서은철, 2016; 김태홍, 박철형, 제갈윤석, 2015). 본 연구의 목적은 장애인스포츠선수의 경기력 향상을 위해 수행된 연구 결과를 데플림픽, 스페셜올림픽, 패럴림픽으로 나누어 체계적 문헌 고찰을 통해 장애인스포츠과학의 필요성과 관련 후속 연구의 방향성을 제시하는 데 있다. 문헌검색은 PICO-TSS의 기준에 따라 선정된 연구문제를 KISS, RISS, DBpia, PubMed, Eric, MEDLINE, Academic Search Complete을 이용하여 1980년 1월부터 2019년 9월까지 출판된 국문 또는 영문 학술논문을 대상으로 하였다. 검색어의 경우 세 가지 주요대회를 기본으로 장애인선수, 장애유형, 경기력 관련 용어를 서로 조합하여 검색을 진행하였다. 문헌선정 흐름도(PRISMA)에 따라 1차 검색된 1808편의 논문은 최종 26편의 논문으로 추출되었다. 최종 선정된 논문 중 6편의 무작위대조실험설계 논문은 Cochrane's Risk of Bias Tool을 이용하여 비뚤림 위험 평가를 시행하였다. 패럴림픽 논문 총 16편, 스페셜올림픽 논문 총 7편, 데플림픽 논문 총 3편이 추출되었고, 무작위대조실험설계연구(RCT)는 패럴림픽 논문 3편, 스페셜올림픽 논문 2편, 데플림픽 논문 1편으로 확인되었다. Perret(2015)의 모델을 이용하여 각 연구의 경기력 결정요인을 범주화한 결과, 체력 및 기술 훈련요인(n=3), 체력훈련요인(n=8), 기술훈련요인(n=2), 코칭요인(n=4), 환경요인(n=2), 심리요인(n=6), 회복요인(n=1)으로 나타났다. 연구 결과를 바탕으로 국내·외 장애인스포츠 선수의 경기력 향상을 위해 체계화된 프로그램의 필요성과 다양한 종목을 대상으로 스포츠과학의 필요성을 제시하였다 Despite the increasing support for disability sports every year, scientific training and support systems for athletes with disabilities are still insufficient(Kim, 2016; Kim, 2015). The purpose of this study was to show the need of sport science for athletes with disabilities and the direction of related follow-up research through systematic review in Deaflympics, Special Olympics, and Paralympics. Literature search targeted Korean or English academic papers published from January 1980 to September 2019 using KISS, RISS, DBpia, PubMed, Eric, MEDLINE, and Academic Search Complete for research issues selected by PICO-TSS. For search words, three major competitions were based on the combination of athletes with disabilities, disability types and performance-related terms. According to PRISMA, 1808 papers were initially selected and finally extracted to 26 papers. Among the final papers, six papers that employed randomized controlled trials(RCT) were evaluated for risk of bias using Cochrane's Risk of Bias Tool. A total of 16 Paralympics papers, 7 Special Olympics papers, and 3 Deaflympics papers were included, and RCT design was applied in 3 Paralympics, 2 Special Olympics, and 1 Deaflympics studies. As a result of categorizing the determinants of athletic performance based on the model of Perret (2015), physical and technical training(n=3), physical training(n=8), technical training(n=2), coaching(n=4), environmenta (n=2), psychological(n=6), and recovery(n=1) factors were found. The authors discussed the importance of tailored systematic training programs to effectively improve performance of athletes with disabilities and a scientific approach in different disability sports.
