Vol.1 No.2

The purpose of the study is to investigate the frequencies and patterns of teacher-student interaction and gain insight on the student motivation regarding interaction through two video conferencing courses being implemented at Korea Open University during the fall semester of 1995. The results revealed the lecture K provided much more interaction than lecture M. In lecture K, teacher-student interaction was prevalent. On the other hand, student-teacher interaction was more observed in lecture M. The on-site location showed more interaction than remote-site in both lecture. On-site location, teacher-student interaction was more frequently observed and student-teacher interaction was shown more in remote-site. Analysis of the relationship between interaction pattern and student motivation revealed that there was no correlation between interaction pattern and student motivation. All pattern of interaction could not be directly correlated to overall students motivations. However, it was elucidated that the Teacher-Student pattern enhanced attention of the students and the Student-Teacher pattern positively influenced confidence of the students.

A Comparison of College Learners` Needs in General English with Academic Achievement

Vol.9 No.2

This study was conducted to compare college learners` needs in General English (GE) with their academic achievements in order to suggest some considerations for GE curriculum design. For the purpose, questionnaires were administered to 796 university students taking GE courses at the beginning of the semester and achievement tests were conducted twice, in the middle of and at the end of the semester. The results of need analysis were compared with the learners` academic achievements evaluated by the instructors of each GE course. Five considerations were analyzed in this study; the goal of GE, the time frame during college years, mediated language during instruction, the focused language skills and the preferable GE contents. This study shows that college learners, who have attained higher grades from GE, present needs on the concurrent use of both Korean and English, and high interest in the instructional contents. Regardless of learners` grades, they prefer to take integrated language skill based instruction as well as GE instruction with the goal of communicative competence. Based on the results, some considerations for curriculum development were mentioned.

Syntactic Features of Korea English: Word Order, Ellipsis, Articles, Prepositions, Passive, and Miscellaneous

Vol.12 No.1

For the recent discussions on the status of English in the global context and its implication for English language teaching (Canagarajah, 2006; Jenkins, 2003, 2005, 2006a, 2006b; Kachru, 1985, 1991, 1992a, 1992b; Modiano, 1999a, 1999b; Rajagopalan, 2004), some ELT researchers (Lee, 2007; Park, 2006, 2007) have conducted a full-scaled documentation on a uniquely common set of English rules and expressions in South Korea and termed it as ‘Korea English.’ In alignment with this movement, the current study presents a first investigation on idiosyncratic syntactic features of Korea English in the domains of (1) word order, (2) ellipsis, (3) articles, (4) prepositions, (5) passive, and (6) miscellaneous. Corpus data of this study come from the Cross Cultural Distance Learning program established and conducted by both Korea and Waseda universities since the late of 1990s. The data display some syntactic aspects of Korea English as the result of contact with Korean language. For its organization, the present paper firstly reviews the theoretical framework in which (1) the emergence of varieties of English in diverse settings and their legitimacy, and the issue of standards in teaching English as an international language and (2) the emergence of ‘Korea English’ are discussed. Secondly, the study describes the data to be analyzed. The study thirdly investigates use of English in relation to the syntactic aspects. Finally, the study concludes and discusses the future directions for studies on local varieties of English based upon corpus data.

Vol.23 No.1

This study examines the effects of a 2-week intensive English program based on the college students’ perceptions of core competencies: English Communication Competency, Self-Directed Competency, Community Competency, and Knowledge and Information Literacy Competency. The program was non-credit and was held in January 2019 for first-year students who had chosen to attend a university in Korea in the upcoming semester. The data for this case study was collected through a questionnaire completed by 33 students and reflection papers from students and was analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The results showed that three competencies (English Communication Competency, Self-Directed Competency, and Knowledge and Information Literacy Competency) of the participants were improved after joining the English program. The results also revealed that Community Competency did not improve significantly after joining the program but showed a strong tendency. The results indicated that a short term English program is effective in the aspects of enhancing college students’ core competencies. It is necessary to continuously monitor the effects of the program in the aspects of core competencies. The pedagogical implications and future directions of the study were discussed.

Vol.18 No.4

This study aims to give an in-depth understanding of why and how on instituting an intensive English camp, to show the reality of the camp and finally to provide suggestions for an effective college English through investigating the participants and instructors’ perception of the English camp program. The Camps for this study have been executed four times for over the course of two years, from 2010 to 2012 during summer and winter vacations. For this study, reflection papers from students and an instructor’s journal were collected and analyzed. The collective total of student participants has been 320 in which the demographic characteristics have been a variety of majors and ages. The students’ reflection papers conducted at the end of each camp were open-ended, and the instructor’s journal was written on a daily basis through the camp. The journal includes reflections based on the instructors’ teaching experience throughout the camp, interviews with other participating instructors and students. The participants’ perceptions of the camp were categorized into five factors: affective aspects, cultural aspects, language ability, teaching methods, and camp management. Considering these factors, the suggestions for an effective college English camp were provided, presenting merits and demerits of the overall management of the program.
