          The purpose of this paper is to analyze the recent trends of the development of the English textbooks in EFL situation. The 7th National English Curriculum(NEC) in 2001 which emphasized the curriculum-centered school education have had much influence on the traditional testbook-centered school education in Korea. According to the paradigmatic change of school education, the contents of the English textbooks were changed into the new types of students-centered classroom activities. For students' communicative activities, the English textbooks were developed by two types of syllabuses: process-oriented syllabus and product-oriented syllabus. The 7th NEC includes procedural syllabus and task-based syllabus as well as grammatical- structural syllabus and notional-functional syllabus. In short, unlike the English textbooks in former curriculums, learners' classroom activities and tasks have been emphasized in those to foster their communicative competence.

          교재기반 영어글쓰기의 일관성에 관한 수준별 비교분석

          The present study examines the quality of coherence in source-based writing by nonnative writers of English in Korea. Writing is considered an important tool that facilitates students' understanding of source texts and improves their disciplinary thinking skills. Data are collected from timed writing tasks required in an English-mediated course for English majors at a private university in Seoul. Based on 49 essays that addressed the same writing prompt, the analysis focused on tracing inter-sentential relations to identify how textual coherence is established between and among sentences. These essays were classified into two groups, high and low level writing, according to the quality of coherence in their textual organizations. Findings suggest that textual coherence is manifested across paragraph levels in high level writing. In contrast, low level writings show coherence only among adjacent sentences. Teaching and research implications are discussed for those English writing professionals in Korea.

          5ㆍ6학년 초등 영어 교과서의 쓰기 활동 및 학습자 인식 분석

          This study intends to find out alternatives to improve the writing activities currently used in the fifth and sixth grade English textbooks and investigate how the students perceive them. In order to fulfill this purpose of the study, the following research questions have been established: (a) what is the nature of writing activities included in the English textbooks in terms of types of tasks, writing steps and the use of visual materials?, (b) how the use of writing activities requires students to perform in terms of interactions and language levels to use, and (c) what are the students' perceptions of writing activities in terms of difficulty levels, preferences, and expectations for helping their writing skills improve?. To answer these, 13 fifth and sixth grade English textbooks were analyzed, and 101 fifth and sixth grade students participated in a survey. The results of the study indicate that the controlled writing step was weighted on too much, and that the diversity of writing activities was limited even within those in the identical writing step. In addition, the use of pictures out of various types of visual aids and the individual writing opportunities were used predominantly. Based on the results, this article ends with suggestions and directions for improving the current nature of writing activities in English textbooks.

          항공객실승무원 업무와 영어과 교과와의 관련성

          The purpose of the study is to investigate the relationships between the duties of flight attendants and the education in the English department. The research participants were four flight attendants who graduated from the English department. This study was conducted in accordance with the hermeneutic research approach. So, the data were collected through conversation (interviews) with the research participants and analyzed to investigate the relevance between the duties of flight attendants and the courses taught at the department of English. The main arguments discussed in this paper are that, first, English expressions related to air cabin service work can be made practical and improved in the direction pursued by the specific purpose English (ESP). Next, it was discussed that the ability of flight attendants to communicate in English relates with socio-linguistic, discourse, and strategic ability in addition to specific formulaic expressions mainly used in cabin service business. Finally, it was discussed that there are many courses such as lexis, pragmatics, and global culture of politeness that can be dealt with in the department of English than in business administration and tourism.

          학교 영어 도서관 운영 실태와 효과적인 운영 방법에 대한 기초 연구

          The present study has a dual purpose to investigate the current state of school English library and needs required for its effective use, and to propose a reading program at the school library. The literature on school library was reviewed. A questionnaire survey was done to find out the current situation of English library at the secondary school. The analysis of 26 secondary English teachers' responses reveals that there was the absence of librarians or reading specialists at the school English library. It was also found that the uses of the English library were limited due to the absence of the specialists, no guidelines, and no link between the curriculum and the library use. A case study on a 2-week special reading program at the school English library was conducted and 15 middle school students took part in the project. The participants took pre- and post-tests to identify their reading level using a software and did a variety of reading activities using the books selected according to their level. The comparison of the tests shows that most of the students' reading level improved after the reading program. The analysis of their views on the program and its effects reveals that they gained confidence in reading and their vocabulary understanding was improved. Some suggestions are made for the effective management of the school English library.

          대학 신입생 학업역량 강화를 위한 비교과 1프로그램에서 영어 기초 독해 수업의 효과

          This study is to examine how extracurricular English reading program affects the first-year students' English reading abilities, English reading motivation and reading strategies. 16 university freshmen taking an extracurricular English reading class participated in the study, and 2 sets of questionnaires and an English reading test were administered. For the purpose of the study, four research questions were set as follows: 1) What are the changes in the students' English reading abilities? 2) What are the changes in English reading motivation after finishing the class? 3) What are the changes in their English reading strategies after finishing the class? It was found that there was significant difference in English reading abilities between before and after the class. Regarding the second and third research questions, there were 8 significant differences in English reading motivation items, and Reading Efficacy, Importance of English Reading and Integrative Orientation domains had a significant difference. As for reading strategies, 8 items had significant differences and Global Reading Strategies and Support Reading strategies domains had a significant difference. In the light of the findings, some pedagogical implications and some future directions for research will be suggested.

          The pros and cons exist in having native English teachers (NET) in Korean English classrooms. Seoul, Gyeonggi and Gangwon Offices of Education officially announced that they're going to stop having NETs in secondary schools. Educational policies require gradual and predictable changes for the stability of curriculum operation at schools. To help make informed decisions on NET policy, this study took surveys of 127 middle and high school Korean English teachers across metropolitan cities, small and medium cities and rural areas, one teacher a school from 127 schools regarding the NET policy. The questionnaire consisted of 6 categories and 35 questions asking about satisfaction, contribution, in-class roles and their effectiveness. The results were quantified and took further interview where it needed qualitative supplementation. The findings were: Teachers in rural areas, middle schools and who don't practice TEE are more satisfied with NETs than teachers in other areas, high schools and who practice TEE in their English c1asses respectively. This result demands that the NET policy decisions should be differentiated by the different needs of NETs between areas, between school levels and between teachers with and without TEE ability.

          The purpose of this study is to investigate the concept of flipped learning and to explore the ways to develop instructional design models in English classes for preservice teachers of English. As a format of blended learning, flipped learning begins with the introduction of a new concept of prior learning that allows students to learn in advance through previewing online lessons and video clips related with the classroom content to be covered. During class time, individualized supplementary or in-depth study is conducted on the basis of the students' prior learning. This study proposes the development of instructional design models for flipped learning pursuant to such considerations. A total of 35 senior college students participated in this new model of flipped classroom and their responses were collected through the interview and simple survey. Overall their negative responses about the class were due to extra work for prior learning and lack of enough class discussions. Future directions regarding the integration of reflective practice into teacher preparation courses were suggested.

          This study is to investigate the effects of the small group cooperation activities on various aspects of English learning motivation and listening proficiency of Korean university students. The relationship learning motivation and listening proficiency was examined, Also the small group cooperation activity and listening proficiency did. It was also explored that how learning motivation was influenced by the small group cooperation activity. The participants completed English learning motivation questionnaire and the small group cooperation activity questionnaire. They also took TOEIC twice during a semester as measurement of their English listening proficiency. The results of listening proficiency and learning motivation were influenced by the small group cooperation activities. The prominent factors for learning motivation were 'instrumental', achievement, and attitude on foreigners. Except for 'integrative', other factors of motivation were positively affected. Thus, to improve students' learning motivation and English listening proficiency, teachers should encourage students to participate in small group cooperative activities. There was a limitation of research, which was lack of participants, few chance of study. Based on the results, pedagogical suggestions were presented.
