        Tourism English Education Based on Students' Beliefs on Foreign Language Learning

        The purpose of this study is to investigate what beliefs Korean college students majoring in tourism English hold about learning foreign languages, particularly on English and to suggest the desirable directions of English teaching for them. To achieve this, one hundred and fourteen students at Seoul Health College participated in the study. A 30 item questionnaire(15 open-ended and 15 closed) about subjects` beliefs on language learning was grouped together into three categories. They included (1) beliefs on the nature of foreign language learning, (2) beliefs on the learners` own English learning, (3) beliefs on the learners' own language learning environment. The main findings and suggestions are provided.

        Tourism English Teaching Techniques Converged from Two Different Angles

        This paper aims to provide some techniques converged from two different angles(learners and tourism English features)for effective tourism English teaching in junior college in Korea. For this, comprehensive methods were undertaken: a questionnaire for learners` needs analysis, an instrument designed by Xiao-hua and Naerssen (1987) for learners` strategies for oral communication, a small-scale classroom study for learners`preference of teaching techniques; interviews for the feature of tourism English teaching. It is suggested that the specific knowledge of the content and the basic expressions of the content be first identified, and then, interaction, an essential factor, be focised on provoking learners` stategies for communication, and be placed on a continuum from predictable interaction to language parctice, along with various groupings, supports of grammar knowledge when necessary.

        유네스코 세계유산으로서 무굴제국의 역사문화경관 연구

        The Mughal Empire was an enormous Islamic country that geographically controlled most of today’s Indian subcontinent. This study examined the characteristics of the historical and cultural landscapes, including the UNESCO World Heritage S ite o f the Mughal Empire. The r esults a re a s follows. The Mughal Empire was founded by Babur, and the influence of the empire was known for the achievements of early emperors, including Babur, Humayun, Jahangir, Akbar, Shah Zahan, and Aurangzeb. Agra, Patepur Sikri, and Shajahanabad were the influential capitals of the empire. The empire developed unique Indian-Islamic architecture by converging Hindu culture with Turk-Persian culture. The empire’s World Heritage Sites (Humayun’s Tomb, Fatehpur Sikri, Agra Fort, Taj Mahal, and Red Fort Complex) are centered in the northern part of the Indian subcontinent. These regions offer a variety of historical and cultural landscapes of the Mughal Empire, including palaces, royal tombs and gardens, and fortresses with outstanding universal values as World Heritage Sites.

        Tourism and Cultural Landscapes of Sri Lanka Using UNESCO World Heritage

        Sri Lanka is an island country located below India in Southern Asia. This study examined the characteristics of tourism and cultural landscapes of Sri Lanka using UNESCO World Cultural Heritage. The results are as follows. Sri Lanka’s World Heritage Sites are concentrated in ancient or sacred cities including Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Sigiriya, and Kandy. Also, Buddhist sites such as Dambulla Cave Temple and Old Town of Galle and its Fortifications as colonial relics are examples that cannot be overlooked. The outstanding value of several cities that retained the traditions of the Sinhala Kingdom, numerous Buddhist temples and caves including the Buddha’s Tooth Relic, and Buddhist scripture recorded in Pali are well represented by Sri Lanka’s tourism and cultural landscapes. Tourism and cultural landscapes in Sri Lanka include storytelling elements that fascinate travelers.

        보건의료종사자의 대학교양교육에 대한 요구도 분석

        The purpose of this study was to identify the importance of core competencies and preferred basic competencies recognized by healthcare workers in order to realize the goals of university general education in the era of the 4th Industrial Revolution. For this purpose, a survey was conducted on workers in the healthcare industry. 499 out of 531 responses were used for analysis. The study found that among the goals of general education in universities that are considered important by healthcare workers, the most meaningful goals involved those which can instill in a person a sense of ethics through self-reflection and development, as well as those which foster communication competency based on critical thinking. Furthermore, the study revealed that personality formation and the cultivation of cultured persons were considered highly important goals to strive for in general education. Comparing the level of the aforementioned key competencies required by the industry with the current level of the respondents, the study showed that overall the respondents’ own current level was lower than that required by the industry. Next, among the basic competencies that should be strengthened in general education at the university level, the ones given the most priority were as follows: interpersonal competency, empathy and consideration competency, communication competency and problem-solving competency, followed by self-development competency, convergence thinking competency, information competency, global trend learning competency, resource management competency, and mathematical competency. Finally, the respondents reported that a subject which can foster personality was one that should be strengthened and given top priority when it comes to general education. 본 연구는 대학교양교육에 대한 사회적 요구의 증대, 제 4차 산업혁명 시대의 도래에 따라 보건의료종사자가 인식하고 있는 대학교양교육 목표를 실현하기 위한 핵심역량의 중요도와 선호하는 기초능력을확인하는데 목적을 두었다. 이를 위해 보건의료종사자를 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하여 응답자 531부중 499부를 분석에 활용하였다. 연구 결과, 보건의료종사자가 생각하는 대학의 교양교육의 목표 중‘자아성찰과 계발을 통해 윤리의식을 갖춘 인성 함양’ 과 ‘비판적 사고에 기초한 의사소통 능력 함양’ 이 가장 의미가 있는 것으로 확인되었고, 대학 교양교육 중요도에서는 ‘보편적 인격형성 및 교양인이갖추어야 할 소양 배양을 위해 중요하다’ 가 가장 중요하게 인식되었다. 산업체가 필요로 하는 핵심역량의 중요도와 응답자 현재 수준 차이를 비교한 결과, 전체적으로 산업체에 필요한 핵심역량 중요도값보다 응답자 자신의 현재 수준 값이 낮게 나타났다. 다음으로, 대학의 교양교육에서 강화되어야할 기초능력 중 가장 우선시되는 능력 항목은 대인관계능력, 공감과 배려능력, 의사소통능력, 문제해결능력이 우선 순위였고, 자기개발능력, 융복합사고능력, 정보능력, 글로벌 트랜드 학습능력, 자원관리능력, 수리능력 순이었다. 마지막으로, 교양교육에서 강화되어야 할 과목은 ‘인성을 함양할 수 있는 과목’ 이 가장 최우선시 되었다.

        창간 10년간 현대영어교육 게재논문 실태분석

        This study reviewed 241 articles that were published in the journal of Modern Language Education published between winter 2000 and winter 2009. The main purpose of the study was to analyze and find out the trends of articles regarding English education over the past 10 years. For this, all the articles had been classified into 4 categories; research area, research topic, research subject, and research methodology. The results showed that in terms of research area, English education articles were the most examined out of the three; English education (76.4%), English language (21.6%), and English literature (1.2%), and the highest percentage of research topics of English education involved English language acquisition/learning (34.2%),and English teaching methodologies (33.9%) respectively. As for research subject,university students (33.2%), including graduate students ranked first. Finally,concerning methodology, quantitative methods (60.3%) have been adopted much more frequently than qualitative ones (39.7%). On the basis of the analysis, the future directions for the journal of Modern Language Education are discussed, and the roles of The Modern English Education Society are presented.

        Effective Teaching Techniques in Teaching English Though English

        This study explores more effective ways of implementing Teaching English Through English (TETE) in college EFL classrooms in Korea by investigating students’ perceptions on teaching techniques affecting success in TETE. The basic assumption for the study is that abundant L2 input is indispensable for second (L2) language acquisition, but a language can be learned only if there is the proper sort of input. The main instruments employed in this study were questionnaires based on the research questions asking for (1) teaching techniques for making language features noticeable for comprehensible input in TETE, and (2) significant differences in the effectiveness of teaching techniques according to learner’s language proficiency and contents comprehensibility in TETE. The findings show that appropriate classroom techniques should be taken into consideration according to students' language proficiency levels. A slow rate speech and error correction were teaching techniques which were required much more for the learners with low English proficiency, while restatement was for the learners with high English proficiency. English-only class was considered not effective for the learners with low English proficiency. The class partially supported by their native languages was perceived effective for both learners. The command among the techniques was not favored by all levels.

        교양영어교육에 관한 학생 요구 조사:보건 계열 특성화 대학의 사례를 중심으로

        This study aims to find out university students' needs to develop the general English (GE) curriculum on the basis of students' needs. 845 students taking GE courses at one college, which is renowned for the departments of health and is divided into health and non-health majors, were asked to respond to the survey. The results showed that college students' needs were characterized by proficiency-based and ESP-oriented curriculum. There were differences between the health and the non-health majors in their needs in terms of the language of instruction, class hours of the week, and the English proficiency certification test for graduation, with the first two showing significant differences. Based on the results, some considerations for the curriculum development were mentioned.
