Effect of sintering duration on structural and electrical properties of Ba0.9Sr0.1Ti0.96Zr0.04O3 solid solution

        Aditya Jain,Rakesh Saroha,Mukul Pastor,A.K. Jha,A.K. Panwar 한국물리학회 2016 Current Applied Physics Vol.16 No.8

Strontium and zirconium substituted barium titanate, Ba0.9Sr0.1Ti0.96Zr0.04O3 (BSZT) was prepared through the solid state reaction route. The compound was sintered for 6, 9 and 12 h and the effect of sintering duration has been studied. Structural investigation has been carried out using X-ray diffraction pattern of the samples following the Rietveld refinement, which confirms the formation of tetragonal phase with P4mm space group. The effect of Sr and Zr substitution in the BT lattice and effect of sintering duration in BSZT has been evaluated by Raman spectroscopy. The microstructural and dielectric studies show the increase in grain size as well as dielectric constant with increasing sintering duration. No appreciable change in Curie temperature (Tc) is observed for all three samples viz. BSZT6, BSZT9 and BSZT12. A decrease in activation energy and increase in diffusivity constant with increasing sintering duration is observed. I-V measurement was carried out to study the resistive properties of the synthesized compositions.

Intrinsic Vertebral Markers for Spinal Level Localization in Anterior Cervical Spine Surgery: A Preliminary Report

        Deepak Kumar Jha,Anil Thakur,Mukul Jain,Arvind Arya,Chandrabhushan Tripathi,Rima Kumari,Suman Kushwaha 대한척추외과학회 2016 Asian Spine Journal Vol.10 No.6

Study Design: Prospective clinical study. Purpose: To observe the usefulness of anterior cervical osteophytes as intrinsic markers for spinal level localization (SLL) during sub-axial cervical spinal surgery via the anterior approach. Overview of Literature: Various landmarks, such as the mandibular angle, hyoid bone, thyroid cartilage, first cricoid ring, and C6 carotid tubercle, are used for gross cervical SLL; however, none are used during cervical spinal surgery via the anterior approach. We present our preliminary assessment of SLL over anterior vertebral surfaces (i.e., intrinsic markers) in 48 consecutive cases of anterior cervical spinal surgeries for the disc-osteophyte complex (DOC) in degenerative diseases and granulation or tumor tissue associated with infectious or neoplastic diseases, respectively, at an ill-equipped center. Methods: This prospective study on patients undergoing anterior cervical surgery for various sub-axial cervical spinal pathologies aimed to evaluate the feasibility and accuracy of SLL via intraoperative palpation of disease-related morphological changes on anterior vertebral surfaces visible on preoperative midline sagittal T1/2-weighted magnetic resonance images. Results: During a 3-year period, 48 patients (38 males,10 females; average age, 43.58 years) who underwent surgery via the anterior approach for various sub-axial cervical spinal pathologies, including degenerative disease (n= 42), tubercular infection (Pott’s disease; n=3), traumatic prolapsed disc (n=2), and a metastatic lesion from thyroid carcinoma (n=1), comprised the study group. Intrinsic marker palpation yielded accurate SLL in 79% of patients (n=38). Among those with degenerative diseases (n=42), intrinsic marker palpation yielded accurate SLL in 76% of patients (n=32). Conclusions: Intrinsic marker palpation is an attractive potential adjunct for SLL during cervical spinal surgeries via the anterior approach in well-selected patients at ill-equipped centers (e.g., those found in developing countries). This technique may prove helpful when radiographic visualization is occasionally inadequate.

Is Teriparatide Superior in Treating Osteoporotic Vertebral Compression Fractures in Comparison to Bisphosphonates Treatment Alone: A 2-Year Retrospective Analysis

        Nair Vishnu Vikraman,Kundnani Vishal G.,Shetty Abhijith,Anand Manikant,Jain Mukul,Dewnany Nikhil 대한척추외과학회 2023 Asian Spine Journal Vol.17 No.6

Study Design: Retrospective cohort study.Purpose: This study aimed to compare the efficacy of bisphosphonates and teriparatide in the management of osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures with regard to pain management, prevention of nonunion, and radiological as well as clinical outcomes.Overview of Literature: Osteoporosis refers to a skeletal disorder characterized by decreased bone strength caused by poor bone density and quality causing fragility, resulting in long periods of pain-related immobilization. Methods: In a 24-month follow-up retrospective study, 191 patients with osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures were randomly assigned to the bisphosphonate group (n=104) or the teriparatide group (n=87), with patients opting for their treatment between January 2016 and October 2020. Demographic data and patient-reported outcomes scores, including the Visual Analog Scale (VAS), Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), union rates, and kyphosis progression, were assessed at baseline, 6 months, 1 year, and 2 years after treatment. Results: Both groups had a significant decrease in VAS, from 8.38±0.74 to 3.15±1.40 in the bisphosphonate group and from 8.49±0.73 to 1.11±0.31 in the teriparatide group. The ODI scores reduced significantly at 2-year follow-ups, recording 25.02±13.94 and 15.11±2.17 in the bisphosphonate and teriparatide groups, respectively. Risks of nonunion development were slightly higher at 11.53% in the bisphosphonate group and 8.63% in the teriparatide group required operative intervention. The kyphosis progression angles were also significantly lower in the teriparatide group (4.97°±0.78°) than in the bisphosphonate group (8.09°±1.25°).Conclusions: Over time, numerous studies have demonstrated the efficacy of bisphosphonates and teriparatide in ameliorating pain. In this study, the efficacy of teriparatide surpassed that of bisphosphonates in certain aspects, such as the initial 6-month union rates and reduction in the progression of segmental kyphosis. However, bisphosphonates and teriparatide yield similar and favorable union rates at 1 year and final follow-up.

Age-related changes in hematological and biochemical profiles of Wistar rats

        Suresh Patel,Satish Patel,Ashvin Kotadiya,Samir Patel,Bhavesh Shrimali,Nikita Joshi,Tushar Patel,Harshida Trivedi,Jitendra Patel,Amit Joharapurkar,Mukul Jain 한국실험동물학회 2024 Laboratory Animal Research Vol.40 No.1

Background: Wistar rats are extensively used as the model for assessing toxicity and efficacy in preclinical research. Hematological and biochemical laboratory data are essential for evaluating specific variations in the physiological and functional profile of a laboratory animal. Establishing hematological and biochemical reference values for Wistar (han) rats at various age intervals was the goal of this work. Male and female Wistar rats (n = 660) of ages 6–8 weeks, 10–14 weeks and > 6 months were used in the experiment. Blood and serum were collected from these rats under fasting conditions. Results: We observed that the majority of hematological and biochemical parameters were significantly influenced by sex and age. Hematological changes were significantly correlated to aging were increased red blood cells, hemoglobin, hematocrit, neutrophils, monocytes and eosinophils in both sexes, as well as decreased platelet, mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular hemoglobin and lymphocytes in both sexes. White blood cells of male rats were considerably higher than those of female rats in all age ranges. For biochemistry, increase in glucose, total protein and creatinine were seen in both sexes, along with increases in urea in females and alanine aminotransferase in males. Age was significantly associated with decreased alkaline phosphatase in both sexes. Conclusions: When using Wistar rats as a model, these reference values may be useful in evaluating the results.

Hematological and biochemical reference intervals of wild-caught and inhouse adult Indian rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta)

        Niraj A. Shah,Laxit K. Bhatt,Rajesh J. Patel,Tushar M. Patel,Nayankumar V. Patel,Harshida G. Trivedi,Nilam R. Patel,Jitendra H. Patel,Satish D. Patel,Rajesh S. Sundar,Mukul R. Jain 한국실험동물학회 2022 Laboratory Animal Research Vol.38 No.4

Background: Nonhuman primates are used for research purposes such as studying diseases and drug discovery and development programs. Various clinical pathology parameters are used as biomarkers of disease conditions in biomedical research. Detailed reports of these parameters are not available for Indian-origin rhesus macaques. To meet the increasing need for information, we conducted this study on 121 adult Indian rhesus macaques (57 wild-sourced and 64 inhouse animals, aged 3–7 years). A total of 18 hematology and 18 biochemistry parameters were evaluated and reported in this study. Data from these parameters were statistically evaluated for significance amongst inhouse and wild-born animals and for differences amongst sexes. The reference range was calculated according to C28-A3 guidelines for reporting reference intervals of clinical laboratory parameters. Results: Source of the animals and sex appeared to have statistically significant effects on reference values and range. Wild-born animals reported higher WBC, platelets, neutrophils, RBC, hemoglobin, HCT, MCV, and total protein values in comparison to inhouse monkeys. Sex-based differences were observed for parameters such as RBCs, hemoglobin, HCT, creatinine, calcium, phosphorus, albumin, and total protein amongst others. Conclusions: Through this study, we have established a comprehensive data set of reference values and intervals for certain hematological and biochemical parameters which will help researchers in planning, conducting, and interpreting various aspects of biomedical research employing Indian-origin rhesus monkeys.
