Bacterial biofilms have been demonstrated to be closely related to clinical infections and contribute to drug resistance. Berberine, which is the main component of Coptis chinensis, has been reported to have efficient antibacterial activity. This study aimed to investigate the potential effect of a combination of berberine with ciprofloxacin (CIP) to inhibit Salmonella biofilm formation and its effect on expressions of related genes (rpoE, luxS, and ompR). The fractional inhibitory concentration (FIC) index of the combination of berberine with CIP is 0.75 showing a synergistic antibacterial effect. The biofilm’s adhesion rate and growth curve showed that the multi-resistant Salmonella strain had the potential to form a biofilm relative to that of strain CVCC528, and the antibiofilm effects were in a dose-dependent manner. Biofilm microstructures were rarely observed at 1/2 × MIC/FIC concentrations (MIC, minimal inhibition concentration), and the combination had a stronger antibiofilm effect than each of the antimicrobial agents used alone at 1/4 × FIC concentration. LuxS, rpoE, and ompR mRNA expressions were significantly repressed (p < 0.01) at 1/2 × MIC/FIC concentrations, and the berberine and CIP combination repressed mRNA expressions more strongly at the 1/4 × FIC concentration. The results indicate that the combination of berberine and CIP has a synergistic effect and is effective in inhibiting Salmonella biofilm formation via repression of luxS, rpoE, and ompR mRNA expressions.

To investigate the effect of high salt diet (HSD, 8% NaCl) on the letrozole induced PCOS mice. At the total of experimental periods (35 days), all female C57BL/6J mice were randomly divided into normal groups, PCOS group (ingested letrozole daily for 21 days) and HSD+PCOS group. The body weight (BW) and histologic changes were evaluated. The serum levels of testosterone (T), LH, E2, FSH, INS, TG, TC, LDL, HDL were determined by ELISA kits. Compared with normal groups, the BW, T, LH, INS, TG, TC LDL-C in PCOS rats were significantly increased, and the levels of E2, FSH and HDL-C were significantly decreased. In addition, compared with the PCOS group, the BW, T, LH, INS, TG, TC LDL-C in HSD+PCOS rats were significantly increased, and the levels of E2, FSH and HDL-C were significantly decreased. Our results showed that HSD exacerbates metabolic disorders and hormonal imbalances in PCOS mice.

<▼1>
The generalized Einstein relation (GER) can unify various theoretical models and predict charge transport in OSCs with various crystallinities, by altering the variance of the density of states and the delocalization degree in a Gaussian-distributed density of states.
</▼1><▼2>
The variety of charge transport theories for organic semiconductors (OSCs) raises the question of which models should be selected for each case, and there is a lack of generalized understanding regarding various OSCs over the full range of crystallinity from single crystal to amorphous. Here, we report that the generalized Einstein relation (GER) can unify various theoretical models and predict charge transport in OSCs with various crystallinities, by altering the variance of the density of states and the delocalization degree in a Gaussian-distributed density of states. The GER also provides a good fitting to much of the experimental data of temperature- and gate-voltage-dependent mobility for different OSCs in transistors. Consequently, disorders of charge transport in various OSCs can be directly compared in the same map, which reveals how energetic disorder and the delocalization degree determine charge transport in organic devices.
</▼2>

Optogenetic methods have emerged as powerful tools for dissecting neural circuit connectivity, function and dysfunction. We used a bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) transgenic strategy to express the H134R variant of channelrhodopsin-2, ChR2(H134R), under the control of cell type??specific promoter elements. We performed an extensive functional characterization of the newly established VGAT-ChR2(H134R)-EYFP, ChAT-ChR2(H134R)-EYFP, Tph2-ChR2(H134R)-EYFP and Pvalb(H134R)-ChR2-EYFP BAC transgenic mouse lines and demonstrate the utility of these lines for precisely controlling action-potential firing of GABAergic, cholinergic, serotonergic and parvalbumin-expressing neuron subsets using blue light. This resource of cell type??specific ChR2(H134R) mouse lines will facilitate the precise mapping of neuronal connectivity and the dissection of the neural basis of behavior.

Hydrostatic bearing has the advantages of wide speed range, large bearing capacity, high precision and stability. Hydrostatic-hydrodynamic hybrid bearing can make up for the lack of stiffness of hydrostatic bearing and prevent tribological failure under the condition of high speed and heavy load. Therefore, hydrostatic bearing and hydrostatic-hydrodynamic hybrid bearing have become important bearing parts of high-end computer numerical control (CNC) machine equipment. The research on hydrostatic and hydrostatic-hydrodynamic open a new way for precision improvement of high-end CNC machine equipment. This paper reviews research progress of hydrostatic linear guideway, hydrostatic rest and ram, hydrostatic thrust bearing, hydrostatic-hydrodynamic thrust bearing and hydrostatic-hydrodynamic spindle of high-end CNC machine equipment, and discusses the influence of structure and working parameters on lubrication performance, accuracy and stability of bearing parts. Finally, the future research direction in hydrostatic bearing and hydrostatic-hydrodynamic hybrid bearing are suggested. This review provides a theoretical basis for design and development of high-end CNC machine equipment in the future.

Spiral growth of various nanomaterials including some two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides had recently been experimentally realized using chemical vapor deposition (CVD). However, such growth that is driven by screw dislocation remained elusive for graphene and is rarely discussed because of the use of metal catalysts. In this work, we show that formation of few-layer graphene (FLG) with a spiral structure driven by screw dislocation can be obtained alongside FLG having a concentric layered structure formed by interfacial nucleation (nucleation at the graphene/Cu interface) using Cu-catalyzed ambient pressure CVD. Unlike commonly reported FLG grown by interfacial nucleation where the second layer is grown independently beneath the first, the growth of a spiral structure adopts a top growth mechanism where the top layers are an extension from the initial monolayer which spirals around an axial dislocation in self-perpetuating steps. Since the same atomic orientation is preserved, the subsequent spiraling layers are stacked in an oriented AB-stacked configuration. This contrasts with FLG formed by interfacial nucleation where turbostratic stacking of the entire adlayer may exist. In both growth scenarios, the second layer (either top or bottom) can grow across the grain boundaries of the initial monolayer domains, forming partial regions with turbostratic stacking configuration due to weak interlayer van der Waals interactions. The unique interlayer coupling of FLG spirals, which enable superior conductivity along the normal of the 2D crystal with spiraling trajectories, are expected to have new and interesting nanoscale applications.
[FIG OMISSION]
