        Application of galactinol to tomato enhances tolerance to cold and heat stresses

        Galactinol, a galactosyl donor, is the key substrate in raffinose family oligosaccharide (RFO) biosynthesis pathways. Many studies proved that galactinol also regulates some defense-related genes to be transcribed as a sugar signal under biotic and abiotic stresses. There are four galactinol synthase (SlGolS) genes in tomato. In this study, SlGolS1, SlGolS2, and SlGolS4 responded to cold stress, especially SlGolS1 stems treated for 12 h and SlGolS4 stems treated for 24 h. Under heat stress, the expression levels of SlGolS1, SlGolS2, and SlGolS3, especially SlGolS1 and SlGolS2, increased in leaves, roots, and stems. When expressed in E. coli cells, SlGolS2 and SlGolS4 enhanced cold tolerance, whereas SlGolS1 and SlGolS3 improved heat tolerance. These results suggested that SlGolS family members played different roles in tolerance to cold and heat stresses. In addition, the application of galactinol or galactinol + α-galactosidase inhibitor (DGJ) improved the cold and heat tolerances of tomato plants, whereas the single application of DGJ had no effect. Interestingly, the applications of DGJ, galactinol, and galactinol + DGJ also affected the expression levels of SlRS, SlSTS, and SlAGAL under cold and heat stresses. These findings indicated that galactinol was involved in the biosynthesis pathways of RFOs as a galactosyl donor and regulated the expression levels of RFO biosynthesis and breakdown-related genes as a sugar signal under cold and heat stresses.

        Degradation and Drug-release Behavior of Polylactic Acid (PLA) Medical Suture Coating with Tea Polyphenol (TP) -Polycaprolactone (PCL)/Polyglycolide (PGA)

        The drug-release time of suture should meet with the healing time of wound, so it is needed to control the drugrelease performance of polylactic acid (PLA) suture. In this paper, two biodegradable polymers with different degradation rates, such as polycaprolactone (PCL) and polyglycolide (PGA), were applied to carry the drug of tea polyphenol (TP). The drug-loading finishing solution which is made of PCL/PGA carriers and TP, was coated on the PLA suture. The drug-release rate and time of PLA suture could be regulated by adjusting the proportion of PCL/PGA carriers. The results indicate that thesurface of drug-loaded PLA suture becomes rough. There is no obvious chemical reaction among the drug, carriers and PLA suture, just physical adhesion. With the increasing of PCL in drug-carriers, the strength of suture gradually increases. At 70/30 of PCL/PGA, the fracture elongation of suture reaches the highest point. In process of degradation, the surface of drugloaded PLA suture appears some holes after 25 weeks. The strength of sutures decreases gradually during degradation, and the effective strength time of sutures with various proportions of PCL/PGA is different. The drug-release rate of the suture isfast at early stage and slow at later stage and the higher the PGA proportion is, the faster the drug-release rate of the suture is.

        Microbial Desulfurization of Dibenzothiophene and 4,6-Dimethyldibenzothiophene in Dodecane and Straight-Run Diesel Oil

        The desulfurization of dibenzothiophene (DBT), 4,6-dimethyldibenzothiophene (4,6-DMDBT) and their mixture by lyophilized cells of Pseudomonas delafieldii R-8 was studied in the presence of dodecane. The desulfurization rate for 4,6-DMDBT was found to be about 40% in comparison with that for DBT. The desulfurization process for DBT and 4,6-DMDBT proceeded simultaneously without preference for either one. The desulfurization rate for each compound was decreased when they were mixed together. The extent of desulfurization of 4,6-DMDBT was increased with the increase of cell concentration and the decrease of the volume ratio of oil-to-water used. The specific desulfurization rate for 4,6-DMDBT could be reached to 10.4 mmol sulfur kg^(-1) (cell) h^(-1) [approximately 0.33 mg sulfur g^(-1) (cell) h^(-1)]. Pseudomonas delafieldii R-8 showed high desulfurization capability for straight-run diesel oil (containing 1,807 mg/L of sulfur). About 1,000 mg/L of sulfur in diesel oil was removed by resting cells of this strai in 24 h of reaction. The specific desulfurization rate was 8.75 mmol sulfur kg^(-1) (cell) h^(-1).

        Research on the calculation method of convection effects on three-dimensional dendritic growth based on LBM

        By coupling the phase field model of dendrite growth with the Lattice Boltzmann method (LBM), a Phase field LBM model (PFLBM) that can simulate 3D dendrite non-isothermal growing from the under-cooled melt of a pure substance in forced flow has been established. Taking high-purity succinonitrile (SCN) as an example, the effects of flow on 3D dendritic growth were studied. The calculation efficiency of LBM and SOLA algorithm was compared under the same condition. The results show that, with the PF-LBM model, the effects of forced flow on 3D dendrite growth morphology and the dendrite asymmetric growth can be quantitatively modeled in large scale, and the dendrite growth is consistent with the crystallization theory. The LBM algorithm overcomes the weakness of a large amount of calculation and slow computation speed that exists in the traditional algorithm, and it achieves a speedup of 11.7 when the calculation region size is 200 3 .

        Efficacy of lymph node dissection on stage IIICr of cervical cancer before CCRT: study protocol for a phase III, randomized controlled clinical trial (CQGOG0103)

        Background: Cervical cancer is still present a major public health problem, especially in developing countries. In International Federation of Gynaecology and Obstetrics 2018, allowing assessment of retroperitoneal lymph nodes by imaging and/or pathological findings and, if deemed metastatic, the case is designated as stage IIIC (with r and p notations). Patients with lymph node metastases have lower overall survival (OS), progression free survival (PFS), and survival after recurrence, especially those who have unresectable macroscopical positive lymph nodes. Retrospective analysis suggests that there may be a benefit to debulking macroscopic nodes that would be otherwise difficult to sterilize with standard doses of radiation therapy. However, there are no prospective study reporting that resecting macroscopic nodes before concurrent chemoradiation therapy (CCRT) would improve PFS or OS of cervical cancer and no guidelines for surgical resection of bulky lymph nodes. The CQGOG0103 study is a prospective, multicenter and randomized controlled trial (RCT) evaluating lymph node dissection on stage IIICr of cervical cancer. Methods: Eligible patients are histologically confirmed cervical squamous cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma, adeno-squamous cell carcinoma. Stage IIICr (confirmed by computed tomography [CT]/magnetic resonance imaging/positron emission tomography/CT) and the short diameter of image-positive lymph node ≥15 mm. 452 patients will be equally randomized to receive either CCRT (pelvic external-beam radiotherapy [EBRT]/extended-field EBRT + cisplatin [40 mg/m2] or carboplatin [the area under curve=2] every week for 5 cycles + brachytherapy) or open/minimally invasive pelvic and para-aortic lymph node dissection followed by CCRT. Randomization is stratified by status of para-aortic lymph node. The primary endpoint is PFS. Secondary endpoints are OS and surgical complications. A total of 452 patients will be enrolled from multiple hospitals in China within 4 years and followed up for 5 years.

        Prescribed performance model-free adaptive terminal sliding mode control for the pneumatic artificial muscles elbow exoskeleton

        This paper focuses on the trajectory tracking issue of the pneumatic artificial muscle (PAM) exoskeleton system. First of all, a new type of the PAM elbow exoskeleton was introduced to assist wearers in elbow flexion/extension movement. Moreover, a model-free adaptive control approach was combined with the prescribed performance control to ensure the tracking errors to be converged to the predefined requirements. Meanwhile, to suffer the influence of the unknown external disturbance on the exoskeleton, a terminal sliding mode control was adopted to reduce the tracking errors. From a theoretical perspective, the stability of the proposed controller can be proved by Lyapunov synthesis. After two sets of experiments, the proposed control method can further improve the tracking accuracy in the PAM elbow exoskeleton, compared with the other three model-free adaptive control methods. Simultaneously, the maximum absolute value of the tracking errors never exceeded the designed boundary.
