        Individualizing the sexual revolution in China : Staging, enjoying, and experiencing sexuality

        一直以来,西方学术界对中国的性研究有一个既定的“压抑假说”,认为中国的党国体制在限制政治自由的同时,也在相应地压制个体的性权利表达。然而,本文试图超越这种刻板印象化的假说,为中国的性研究提供更复杂的叙事和解释。具体而言,本文将以叶海燕—中国著名的网络名人和女权主义活动家—为案例研究展示其“个体化的性革命”,特别是其如何在中国情境下展演性化的身体,享受性的快感,并体验性工作。文章认为,叶海燕的性实践展示了个体自治的可能,并展现了中国新的性主体的能动性。 Western scholars have generally proposed that the Chinese state always restricts political freedoms and oppresses individual expression of sexual rights. The purpose of this paper is to view sexuality outside this stereotypical perspective through complex stories about and explanations of sexuality in China. In order to do so I have undertaken a case study of Ye Haiyan, a feminist activist and internet celebrity in China. By focusing on her staging of her sexual body, enjoyment of sexual pleasure, and experience of sex work, the study demonstrates China’s individualized sexual revolution. It argues that Ye’s sexual practices indicate possibilities for self-expression and agency of new sexual subjects in China.

      • The nearest complex polynomial with a zero in a given complex domain

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>Given a univariate complex polynomial f and a closed complex domain D, whose boundary C is a curve parameterized by a piecewise rational function, we propose two computational algorithms for finding a univariate complex polynomial f̃ such that f̃ has a zero in D and the distance between f and f̃ is minimal. Our approach is composed of two steps. First, in the case of D consisting of one point α, we give explicit formulas of f̃ and the minimal distance in terms of α. Next, the case of a general closed domain D is considered by using the property that a nearest polynomial f̃ has a zero on the boundary C. The curve C is parameterized piecewisely, and on each piece we search for the minimum of the distance between f and f̃. At this step we exploit the explicit formula of the minimal distance as a function of a point α. Then the global minimum and the nearest polynomial are obtained by comparing the piecewise minima. Some examples are presented: one of them confirms that the distance between a nearest complex polynomial and a given polynomial is less than that between a nearest real polynomial and the given polynomial.</P>

        Individual and collective empowerment: Women's voices in the #MeToo movement in China

        In the past, women had been inclined to remain silent in the face of sexual harassment and this article examines the case of Chinese women, who have been empowered by the global #MeToo movement to fight for social equality. Through interviews and observations, this study analyzes how this movement has empowered Chinese women both at individual and collective levels and motivated them to fight against sexual harassment. However, further challenges remain, such as reforming of outdated laws. Therefore, the study suggests an institutional level approach for the empowerment of Chinese women and aims to draw more attention to similar strategies for the empowerment of women in non-western contexts.

      • Convergence analysis of a family of 14-node brick elements

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>In this paper, we will give convergence analysis for a family of 14-node elements which was proposed by Smith and Kidger (1992). The 14 DOFs are taken as the values at the eight vertices and the six face-centroids. For second-order elliptic problems, we will show that among all the Smith–Kidger 14-node elements, Type 1, Type 2 and Type 5 elements provide optimal-order convergent solutions while Type 6 element gives one-order lower convergent solutions. Motivated by our proof, we also find that the order of convergence of the Type 6 14-node nonconforming element improves to be optimal if we change the DOFs into the values at the eight vertices and the integration values on the six faces. We also show that Type 1, Type 2 and Type 5 keep the optimal-order convergence if the integral DOFs on the six faces are adopted.</P>

        Microbial Desulfurization of Dibenzothiophene and 4,6-Dimethyldibenzothiophene in Dodecane and Straight-Run Diesel Oil

        The desulfurization of dibenzothiophene (DBT), 4,6-dimethyldibenzothiophene (4,6-DMDBT) and their mixture by lyophilized cells of Pseudomonas delafieldii R-8 was studied in the presence of dodecane. The desulfurization rate for 4,6-DMDBT was found to be about 40% in comparison with that for DBT. The desulfurization process for DBT and 4,6-DMDBT proceeded simultaneously without preference for either one. The desulfurization rate for each compound was decreased when they were mixed together. The extent of desulfurization of 4,6-DMDBT was increased with the increase of cell concentration and the decrease of the volume ratio of oil-to-water used. The specific desulfurization rate for 4,6-DMDBT could be reached to 10.4 mmol sulfur kg^(-1) (cell) h^(-1) [approximately 0.33 mg sulfur g^(-1) (cell) h^(-1)]. Pseudomonas delafieldii R-8 showed high desulfurization capability for straight-run diesel oil (containing 1,807 mg/L of sulfur). About 1,000 mg/L of sulfur in diesel oil was removed by resting cells of this strai in 24 h of reaction. The specific desulfurization rate was 8.75 mmol sulfur kg^(-1) (cell) h^(-1).
