<P>Wet scrubber is widely used to remove pollutants from a furnace flue gas or from other gas streams. However, high cost for the treatment or exchange of contaminated washed water is one of the problems. Electrocoagulation (EC) is an electrochemical method for treating polluted water, whereby sacrificial anodes dissolve to produce active coagulant precursors in the solution. This technology can be used for the removal of color, anionic contaminants, and colloidal particles. The goal of the present study was evaluation of EC process for treatment of wet scrubber wastewater and optimization of the process. In this study, the influence of electrode material and electrode distance on removal efficiency (%) of nitrate, sulfate, and total suspended solids (TSS) was investigated with synthetic wastewater. Using an Al electrode, 60.6% of nitrate, 50.0% of sulfate, and 96.8% of TSS were removed by EC treatment within 30 min. In case of Fe electrode, 69.7% of nitrate, 75.0% of sulfate, and 98.8% of TSS were removed. The treatment efficiency for real wet scrubber wastewater was evaluated with Fe electrode. After 180 min of EC treatment, 50% of color, 40% of nitrate, 40% of sulfate, and 95% of TSS were removed, respectively. All these results give clear evidence that EC process can effectively reduce the TSS, nitrate, and sulfate ions from wet scrubber wastewater.</P>
Isolated intracranial fibromuscular dysplasia of the posterior cerebral artery

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD) is a nonatherosclerotic, noninflammatory arterial disease that most commonly affects the renal and internal carotid arteries, but intracranial FMD is very rare. We report a patient with FMD involving the posterior cerebral arteries (PCAs). A 24year old female was presented with a 4day history of right homonymous hemianopsia with throbbing headache in the left temporo-occipital area. The brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed an acute ischemic stroke in the left PCA territory, while the Time of Flight (TOF) magnetic resonance angiogram (MRA) showed segmental luminal irregularities in the left proximal PCA. The conventional angiogram revealed the “string of beads” appearance, a characteristic that is pathognomonic for FMD. The patient’s inhospital clinical course was stable, while there was no recurrence of stroke. This is the second report of FMD of the PCA. Notwithstanding incredibly rare incidences of isolated intracranial FMD and nonspecific findings of MRA, such a pathophysiology should be considered as the cause for a stroke in young patients, especially those with no cardiovascular risk factor.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Isolated intracranial FMD with the “string of beads” appearance is very rare. </LI> <LI> In young patients without the risk of atherosclerosis, intracranial FMD should be considered as a pathophysiology of stroke. </LI> <LI> TOF-MRA may show unclear “string of beads” appearance such as segmental luminal irregularities in intracranial FMD. </LI> </UL> </P>

Drought stress is one of the major stresses affecting growth and productivity in rice. Drought tolerance is a complex trait governed by quantitative trait loci(QTLs) making it difficult to understand mechanisms underlying it. We generated a set of 55 introgression lines via backcrosses using Milyang23, the Korean Tongil-type rice variety as the recurrent parent and Oryza glaberrima (IRGC Acc. No. 103544) as a donor parent. 139 SSR markers were used to genotype 55 introgression lines. The 55 introgression lines with Milyang23 were evaluated for physiological traits such as fresh shoot weight (FSW), fresh root weight (FRW) and dry shoot weight (DSW) under the control and 30% PEG-treated condition. Three lines (IL9, IL12, and IL55) showing significant difference with Milyang23 were selected for further analysis. Genotyping revealed that three lines had four, four and two O. glaberrima homozygous segments, respectively. IL9 performed better than Milyang23 in all traits measured in the 30% PEG-treated condition. IL9 possessed four O. glaberrima introgressions on chromosomes 1, 2, 6 and 7. IL12 performed better than Milyang23 in FSW and FRW and contains four O. glaberrima introgressions on chromosomes 3 and 6. IL55 contains two O. glaberrima introgressions on chromosomes 2 and 6. Three lines shared the O. glaberrima segment delimited by markers RM133-RM225 at chromosomes 6. This region corresponds to the QTL region for drought tolerance reported by other previous studies. Although IL9 and IL12 showed improved drought tolerance at the seedling and vegetative stage, they performed poor under the drought stress at the reproductive stage implying that the level of drought tolerance differs according to the growth stage in rice. IL55 was not significantly different from Milyang 23 in SPP and FER and had significantly higher no. of the total grain than Milyang 23. This result seems to indicate that IL55 will be a good resource for drought tolerance breeding. The population would be useful not only in developing drought tolerant lines in the breeding program but also in fine-mapping the genes/QTLs for drought tolerance.

Previous studies report that organo-sulfur compounds derived from garlic inhibited smooth muscle cell (SMC) proliferation and induced apoptosis of cancer cells. Recently, lipid-soluble compounds such as diallyl sulfides (DAS) and diallyl disulfides (DADS) have been reported to more effectively suppress tumor cell proliferation. However, there were few studies on the suppressive effects of lipid-soluble garlic sulfur compounds on the proliferation and migration of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC). Therefore, this study investigated the effect of DAS and DADS on VSMC proliferation/migration induced by oleic acid (OA), a principal fatty acid in circulating triglyceride of blood stream. Assays performed include a tetrazole (MTT) assay, a wound healing assay and a Western blots. VSMC proliferations were enhanced by OA in a dose-dependent manner at concentrations of 10~50 μM and inhibited by DAS and DADS compared to non-treated control. OA-induced proliferations were also attenuated by DAS and DADS. OA-induced cell migrations were 2.5 times higher than non-treated control, and they were significantly attenuated by DAS (32% at 150 μM and 50% at 200 μM) and DADS (40% at 150 μM and 46% at 200 μM). OA-induced cell migration was also attenuated by PD98059 (ERK inhibitor), SB203580 (P38 inhibitor) and particularly by LY204002 (PI3K inhibitor) and SP600125 (JNK2 inhibitor). Additionally, Western blot assays showed that OA-induced JNK1/2-phosphorylation was down-regulated after treatment with DAS and DADS. In conclusion, the findings of our study support the idea that DAS and DADS may have a suppressive effect on the proliferation and migration of OA-induced VSMC and that this effect may be partly associated with PI3K and JNK2 pathways.
Mapping of yield component traits using near isogenic lines from an interspecific cross

In previous studies, we reported that a QTL for 1000-grain weight (TGW), qTGW3 was located in the interval between RM60 and RM523 (1.2Mb) on chromosome 3 using advanced backcross lines derived from a cross between Oryza sativa ssp. Indica cv. Milyang 23 and O. glaberrima. The O. glaberrima alleles at this locus increased TGW and GL in the Milyang 23 background. To further confirm and narrow down the position of the QTLs on chromosome 3, twenty lines with different O. glaberrima segments in the target region were selected. Twenty lines were evaluated for seven agronomic traits including 1,000 grain weight and grain length and also genotyped with ten SSR markers. Sixteen lines(A, B, C groups) with the O. glaberrima segment flanked by SSR markers, RM60 and RM7332 displayed significantly higher values than Milyang 23 in TGW and GL whereas four lines(D, E groups) without the O. glaberrima segment displayed no difference in TGW and GL. The result indicates that two QTL, qTGW3 and qGL3 are located near RM60 and RM7332.

Ecological Footprint (EF) in Korea has increased steeply over the past 50 years and, thus, the overshoot. It has been known that the main causes of the overshoot are population growth and the increase of the consumption intensity per person. In this study, the EF trend in Korea is analyzed for the past 50 years and it is found the major cause of the rapid increase of EF in Korea is the increase of the consumption intensity per person. Among the sectors of the consumption, Carbon Footprint (CF) from the energy consumption and Grazing Land Footprint and Fishing Grounds Footprint from the protein consumption are the major players for the increase. It is also found that if current trend of the EF per person would be maintained until 2060, EF in Korea would be expected to increase also continuously, despite of the decrease of the population from 2031. Therefore, the direction of the environmental management should be considered for inducing the change of the individual consumption patterns and the behavioral changes.
