Decellularization of Trachea With Combined Techniques for Tissue-Engineered Trachea Transplantation

        Aysegul Batioglu-Karaaltin,Ercüment Ovali,Mehmet V Karaaltin,Murat Yener,Mehmet Yılmaz,Fatma Eyüpoğlu,Yetkin Zeki Yılmaz,Erol Rüştü Bozkurt,Necdet Demir,Esma Konuk,Ergun Süreyya Bozdağ,Özgür Yiğit,Har 대한이비인후과학회 2019 Clinical and Experimental Otorhinolaryngology Vol.12 No.1

Objectives. The purpose of this study is to shorten the decellularization time of trachea by using combination of physical, chemical, and enzymatic techniques. Methods. Approximately 3.5-cm-long tracheal segments from 42 New Zealand rabbits (3.5±0.5 kg) were separated into seven groups according to decellularization protocols. After decellularization, cellular regions, matrix and strength and endurance of the scaffold were followed up. Results. DNA content in all groups was measured under 50 ng/mg and there was no significant difference for the glycosaminoglycan content between group 3 (lyophilization+deoxycholic acid+de-oxyribonuclease method) and control group (P=0.46). None of the decellularized groups was different than the normal trachea in tensile stress values (P>0.05). Glucose consumption and lactic acid levels measured from supernatants of all decellularized groups were close to group with cells only (76 mg/dL and 53 mg/L). Conclusion. Using combination methods may reduce exposure to chemicals, prevent the excessive influence of the matrix, and shorten the decellularization time.

Comparison of postoperative pain intensity after using reciprocating and continuous rotary glide path systems: a randomized clinical trial

        Mehmet Adıgüzel,Koray Yılmaz,Pelin Tüfenkçi 대한치과보존학회 2019 Restorative Dentistry & Endodontics Vol.44 No.1

Objectives: The aim of this study was to compare postoperative pain intensity after root canal treatment with One G (OG) vs. R-Pilot (RP) files used for glide path preparation. Materials and Methods: Ninety-three single-canaled mandibular premolar teeth with asymptomatic non-vital pulp were randomly assigned into 3 groups ( n = 31): OG, RP, or without glide path (WGP). After creating the glide path, the root canals were prepared using sequential Mtwo rotary files to size 30/0.05. One endodontic specialist carried out single-visit endodontic treatment. The patients were asked to rate the severity of postoperative pain on a visual analogue scale at 24, 48, and 72 hours after the visit. They were also asked to record their intake of prescribed analgesics taken. The data were analyzed using the χ2, Friedman, Kruskal-Wallis, and Mann-Whitney U tests. Results: In all 3 groups, postoperative pain decreased significantly at each time interval ( p < 0.05). At 24 hours, the OG group had less postoperative pain than the WGP group ( p < 0.05). However, no significant difference was found between the RP group and the others. No statistically significant difference was found among the WGP, OG, and RP groups in postoperative pain intensity at 48 or 72 hours or in analgesic tablet intake at the 3 assessed time intervals. Conclusions: The OG group had less postoperative pain than the WGP group in the first 24 hours. The OG and RP systems were similar regarding postoperative pain intensity and analgesic intake.

        Synovial Sarcoma Mimicking Myositis Ossificans

        ( Mehmet Sabri Balik ),( Adem Erkut ),( Yılmaz Guvercin ),( Recep Bedir ) 대한슬관절학회 2016 대한슬관절학회지 Vol.28 No.3

A calcification mass was incidentally found in the soft tissue of a patient who had a history of trauma to the extremity during examination. The patient had no symptom. The pathological analysis of the mass revealed it was an early phase synovial sarcoma (SS). The diagnosis was made before the onset of symptoms and proper surgical intervention was performed. Therefore, in case of a <1 cm lesion clinically suspicious of myositis ossificans, SS should be taken into consideration as a possible diagnosis.

Clinical significance of renal cortical thickness in patients with chronic kidney disease

        Mehmet Korkmaz,Bekir Aras,Serkan Güneyli,Mümtaz Yılmaz 대한초음파의학회 2018 ULTRASONOGRAPHY Vol.37 No.1

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the correlations between laboratory findings and ultrasonographic measurements of renal length and cortical thickness in patients receiving follow-up for chronic kidney disease (CKD). Methods: A total of 41 CKD patients (18 males and 23 females; mean age, 65.2 years; range, 42 to 85 years) with a low glomerular filtration rate who did not require renal replacement therapy were included in this prospective study. Patients were followed up with laboratory assays at bimonthly intervals and with ultrasonography performed twice a year. Renal cortical thickness, renal length, and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) values were compared using the paired-samples t test. Additionally, Pearson correlation analysis was conducted between renal length and cortical thickness measurements and eGFR values to assess kidney function. Results: At the beginning of the study and after 24 months, mean eGFR values of the 41 patients were 35.92 mL/min and 28.38 mL/min, respectively. The mean renal length was 91.29 mm at the beginning of the study and 90.24 mm at the end of the study. The mean cortical thickness was 5.76±2.05 mm at the beginning of the study and 5.28±1.99 mm at the end of the study. A statistically significant positive association was found between eGFR and mean renal length (r=0.66, P<0.01) and between eGFR and mean cortical thickness (r=0.85, P<0.01), with the latter being more prominent. Conclusion: Our study suggests that ultrasonographic cortical thickness measurements may be an important imaging technique in the follow-up care of patients with CKD.

Can tumor recurrence be reduced with plasma-kinetic vaporization of the area around the tumor in nonmuscle invasive bladder cancer?

        Yüksel Yılmaz,Mehmet Cemal Kahya,Fatma Hüsniye Dilek,Osman Köse,Serkan Özcan,Ertan Can,Yiğit Akın,Batuhan Ergani,Ahmet Selçuk Dindar 대한비뇨의학회 2018 Investigative and Clinical Urology Vol.59 No.4

Purpose: To investigate the effect on recurrence of vaporization of the tumor surroundings and suspicious areas with a plasma-kinetic (PK) system after transurethral resection (TUR) of nonmuscle invasive bladder cancer. Materials and Methods: The study included 121 patients with a primary superficial bladder tumor who were randomized as those who underwent TUR with the PK system (Group 1, n=62) and those who underwent TUR with the monopolar system (Group 2, n=59). The vaporization procedure was performed by suppressing the cutting option of the PK system for a period, which would accumulate energy sufficient to make swelling-waves on the mucosa very close to the area of the loop to be vaporized. Results: A total of 121 patients who met the study criteria were included for evaluation. Recurrence was determined in 21 patients in Group 1 (33.87%) and in 29 patients in Group 2 (49.15%) (p=0.088). Recurrence was close to the old resection site in 6 of 21 patients in Group 1, and in 13 patients in Group 2 (p=0.028); the difference was statistically significant. No statistically significant difference was determined between the two groups with respect to age, gender, number of tumor foci, rate or range of additional treatments applied, cigarette smoking rate, repeat TUR rate and rate of tumor en- countered in repeat TUR, T-stage, and tumor grade. Conclusions: The effect of vaporization on recurrence by the PK system may seem similar to the effect of standard TUR, the recurrence- lowering effect surrounding nonmuscle invasive bladder cancers is better.

Structural, thermal, electrical and morphological characterization of (Bi2O3)1xy(Sm2O3)x(Yb2O3)y nanostructures prepared by solid state synthesis

        Yasin Polat,Yılmaz Da gdemir,Mehmet Arı 한국물리학회 2016 Current Applied Physics Vol.16 No.12

In the present work, the ternary system of (Bi2O3)1xy(Sm2O3)x(Yb2O3)y was investigated. For the production and stabilization of the fcc-type solid solution, nano-Sm2O3 and nano-Yb2O3 were doped into nano-Bi2O3 by solid-state synthesis techniques. The XRD results showed that the crystallographic structure of the samples had displayed a fluorite type face-centered cubic d-Bi2O3 phase. The phase stability was also checked by the DTA measurements. The temperature dependent electrical conductivity results revealed that the maximum electrical conductivity observed for the sample of the nanostructure- (Bi2O3)0.8(Sm2O3)0.1(Yb2O3)0.1 system was 5.39 102 (ohm.cm)1 at 650 C. The results also show that the lowest activation energy was 0.7062 eV and the lowest crystallite size was 31.62 nm for the nanostructure-( Bi2O3)0.75(Sm2O3)0.1(Yb2O3)0.15 system. Consequently, the face-centered cubic stable d-phase- (Bi2O3)0.8(Sm2O3)0.1(Yb2O3)0.1 is the optimal dopant amount due to the relatively good stability and oxygen ionic conductivity obtained, which are two of our major concerns for the electrolyte layer of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs).

Reliability of Fossae Lumbales Laterales and Pelvic Incidence for Estimating Transsacral Corridors Assessed Using Reconstruction Computed Tomography

        Orhan Balta,Mehmet Akif Yılmaz,Kürşad Aytekin,Recep Kurnaz,Harun Altinayak,Mehmet Burtaç Eren,Eyüp Çağatay Zengin 대한정형외과학회 2022 Clinics in Orthopedic Surgery Vol.14 No.3

Background: The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of fossae lumbales laterales and pelvic incidence (PI) on transsacral corridors. Methods: Patients who underwent pelvic computed tomography (CT) during routine therapy in a single center between 2015 and 2020 were retrospectively reviewed. The patients’ age and sex were documented during CT examination. Measurements were performed for both the upper and second sacral segments. Height and weight of the patients were determined using appropriate tools and body mass index (BMI) was calculated. Transsacral corridors were identified in true coronal and true sagittal planes and their width was determined as the maximum gap measured so that no screws could come out of the transacral corridors. PI was measured. Results: Our study included 244 (57%) male and 184 (43%) female patients, who had a mean age of 49.3 ± 14.15 years (range, 18–89 years) and a mean BMI of 26.57 ± 2.38 kg/m2. No statistically significant correlation was found between the detection of the dimple sign in physical examination and the presence of an adequate corridor. The PI was statistically significantly higher in the patients with dimples (p < 0.001). PI of the female patients was higher than that of the male patients (p = 0.026). The correlation between PI and the existence of adequate corridors for S1 and S2 screws was not statistically significant (p = 0.858 and p = 0.129, respectively). On the relationship between the presence of adequate S1 and S2 corridors where transsacral screws could be sent, an inverse relationship was detected: if the S1 transsacral corridor was adequate, the S2 corridor was inadequate or vice versa. Conclusions: We could not obtain meaningful results on the use of the dimples of Venus or PI instead of CT to evaluate the adequacy of transverse corridors. Nevertheless, we confirmed that an increased PI was associated with the presence of dimples of Venus.

Serum and Liver Tissue Bio-Element Levels, and Antioxidant Enzyme Activities in Carbon Tetrachloride-Induced Hepatotoxicity: Protective Effects of Royal Jelly

        Mustafa Cemek,Fatma Yılmaz,Mehmet Emin Büyükokuroğlu,Ahmet Büyükben,Fatih Aymelek,Ahmet Ayaz 한국식품영양과학회 2012 Journal of medicinal food Vol.15 No.8

The liver is a vital organ, and its function is generally impaired by chemicals. Some natural compounds have a protective role against liver diseases such as royal jelly (RJ). To our knowledge, there are no data available on the effect of RJ therapy on the levels of bio-element metabolisms and antioxidant enzyme activities in the carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced liver damage. Therefore, in the present study, we have investigated the role of RJ therapy in the trace and major elements and antioxidant enzymes in CCl4-induced hepatotoxicity in rats. Antioxidant enzyme activities decreased in the CCl4-treated group more than they did in the sham and RJ-administered groups. Many bio-element levels were also reduced in only the CCl4-treated group. This showed that the depletion of trace elements was related to erythrocyte antioxidant enzyme activities. RJ administration clearly increased the trace and major element levels and antioxidant enzyme activities in RJ groups. RJ may be used as functional foods because of their naturally high antioxidant potential and rich element content.

The Relationship between Quiescent Infl ammatory Bowel Disease and Peripheral Polyneuropathy

( Zuleyha Akkan Cetinkaya ),( Yılmaz Cetinkaya ),( Mehmet Gencer ),( Mesut Sezikli ),( Hulya Tireli ),( Oya Ovunc Kurdas ),( Kayıhan Uluc ),( Onder Us ),( Tulin Tanrıdag ) 대한소화기기능성질환·운동학회 2011 Gut and Liver Vol.5 No.1

Background/Aims: Infl ammatory bowel disease is a chronic, recurrent disorder that involves multiple organ systems. Polyneuropathy is the most common neurological manifestation. The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship between polyneuropathy and infl ammatory bowel disease. Methods: The study included 40 patients with infl ammatory bowel disease (20 with ulcerative colitis and 20 with Crohn`s disease) and 24 healthy controls. The patients had no clinical signs or symptoms of polyneuropathy. Nerve conduction studies were performed using an electroneuromyography apparatus. Results: Mean distal motor latencies, conduction velocities, and F wave minimum latencies of the right median nerve were signifi cantly abnormal in the patient group, compared to the healthy controls (p<0.05). Conclusions: Some electrophysiological alterations were observed in chronic infl ammatory bowel disease patients who showed no clinical signs. While investigating extra-intestinal manifestations in inflammatory bowel disease patients, nerve conduction studies must be performed to identify electrophysiological changes and subclinical peripheral polyneuropathy, which can subsequently develop.
