<P>Conformation-dependent properties of <SMALL>l</SMALL>-tyrosine and <SMALL>l</SMALL>-tryptophan in neutral and radical cations were studied by using the density functional theory (DFT) with a new density functional M05-2X. The results are compared with those obtained by using the conventional DFT (B3LYP). Results obtained by both types of DFT were in qualitative accord, including the existence of two conformational subgroups and their subgroup-dependent adiabatic ionization energy and hydrogen bonding. On the other hand, quantitative differences were found between the two DFT methods as well: the M05-2X method successfully reproduced experimental adiabatic ionization energy, whereas the B3LYP functional consistently yielded significantly lower values by 0.2–0.3 eV. More importantly, natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis for cationic conformers showed that all conformers of <SMALL>l</SMALL>-tyrosine and <SMALL>L</SMALL>-tryptophan undergo charge localization upon ionization regardless of the presence of intramolecular hydrogen bonding, unlike the case of <SMALL>l</SMALL>-phenylalanine that was treated earlier by other studies. Different degrees of charge localization among all three aromatic amino acids are explained by employing a simple model in which the aromatic amino acid is assumed to consist of two submoieties of distinct cationic core: the backbone and aromatic side chain. We have measured the internal elasticity of a zebrafish egg during cleavage by using Brillouin scattering spectroscopy. We have found that the elasticity in the embryo is rather constant in spite of the large morphological change. The result suggests that the functional change in F-actin network at the surface also controls the cytokinesis inside the cell.

The nanoscale surface structure of surface oxide lms formed on pure iron treated by UV irradiation at 3 mW/cm2 and electrochem-microscopy and spectroscopic ellipsometry. UV irradiation of the air-formed lm decreased the lm thickness, surface roughness andsurface area. UV irradiation of electrochemically passivated surfaces increased the lm thickness and the terrace width of the oxide film.
Interference Effect betweenϕandΛ(1520)Production Channels in theγp→K+K−pReaction near Threshold

<P>The phi-Lambda(1520) interference effect in the gamma p -> K(+)K(-)p reaction has been measured for the first time in the energy range from 1.673 to 2.173 GeV. The relative phases between phi and Lambda(1520) production amplitudes were obtained in the kinematic region where the two resonances overlap. The measurement results support strong constructive interference when K+K- pairs are observed at forward angles but destructive interference for proton emission at forward angles. Furthermore, the observed interference effect does not account for the root s = 2.1 GeV bump structure in forward differential cross sections for phi photoproduction. This fact suggests possible exotic structures such as a hidden-strangeness pentaquark state, a new Pomeron exchange, or rescattering processes via other hyperon states.</P>

<P>Differential cross sections and photon-beam asymmetries for the (gamma) over right arrowp -> pi(+) n reaction have been measured for 0.6 < cos theta(pi) < 1 and E-gamma = 1.5-2.95 GeV at SPring-8/LEPS. The cross sections monotonically decrease as the photon beam energy increases for 0.6 < cos theta(pi) < 0.9. However, the energy dependence of the cross sections for 0.9 < cos theta(pi) < 1 and E-gamma = 1.5-2.2 GeV (W = 1.9-2.2 GeV) is different, which may be due to a nucleon or Delta resonance. The present cross sections agree well with the previous cross sections measured by other groups and show forward peaking, suggesting significant t-channel contributions in this kinematical region. The asymmetries are found to be positive, which can be explained by rho exchange in the t channel. Large positive asymmetries in the small-vertical bar t vertical bar region, where the rho-exchange contribution becomes small, could be explained by introducing p-exchange interference with the s channel.</P>
