This study aimed to compare factors related to changes in perceived health status of Han Chinese (traditional Chinese) and Korean-Chinese (Chinese nationals of Korean descent) women after immigration to Korea. During summer 2013, a survey was conducted with 151 Han and 158 Korean-Chinese women married to Korean men. Most of the respondents reported either no changes (82%) or positive changes (18%) in their perceived health status after immigration. The results of the multiple logistic regression analyses indicated healthy dietary behavior was related to positive changes in the perceived health status of both groups (odds ratio [OR] = 7.4 for Han Chinese; OR = 14.6 for Korean-Chinese). Among Han Chinese women, the length of residence in Korea and the change in perceived health status showed a negative relation (OR = 0.2). In contrast, their level of acculturation and health perception were positive (OR = 7.5). However, these results did not apply to the Korean-Chinese women. In conclusion, factors related to changes in perceived health status differed between the 2 groups although they shared healthy dietary behaviors as a common factor. Therefore, policies and programs aimed at promoting immigrant women's health should consider the differences between Han Chinese and Korean-Chinese.

During the screening of xylanolytic enzymes from locally isolated fungi, one strain BCC14405, exhibited high enzyme activity with thermostability. This fugal strain was identified as Aspergillus cf. niger based on its morphological characteristics and internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences. An enzyme with xylanolytic activity from BCC14405 was later purified and characterized. It was found to have a molecular mass of ca. 21 kDa, an optimal pH of 5.0, and an optimal temperature of 55℃. When tested using xylan from birchwood, it showed K_(m) and V_(max) values of 8.9 mg/ml and 11,100 U/mg, respectively. The enzyme was inhibited by CuSO₄, EDTA, and by FeSO₄. The homology of the 20-residue N-terminal protein sequence showed that the enzyme was an endo-1,4-β-xylanase. The full-length gene encoding endo-1,4-β-xylanase from BCC14405 was obtained by PCR amplification of its cDNA. The gene contained an open reading frame of 678 bp, encoding a 225 amino acid protein, which was identical to the endo-1,4-a^-xylanase B previously identified in A. niger.

We have theoretically studied the nonadiabatic transitions among the five lower states with the Ω=$1_u$ symmetry ($1_u^{(1)} to 1_u^{(5)}$) in the photodissociation of Cl₂, Br₂, and I₂by using the spin-orbit configuration interaction (SOCI) method and the semiclassical time-dependent coupled Schrodinger equations. From the configuration analyses of the SOCI wavefunctions, we found that the nonadiabatic transition between $1_u^{(2)}$ and $1_u^{(1)}$ is a noncrossing type, while that between $1_u^{(3)}$ and $1_u^{(4)}$ is a crossing type for all the molecules. The behavior of the radial derivative coupling element between $1_u^{(1)}$ and $1_u^{(2)}$ and that between $1_u^{(3)}$ and $1_u^{(4)}$ is analyzed in detail. In Cl₂, nonadiabatic transitions can take place even between the states correlating to different dissociation limits, while in Br₂ and I₂, with the usual photon energies e.g. less than 20 eV, nonadiabatic transitions occur only between the states correlating to the same dissociation limits, reflecting the different magnitudes of the spin-orbit interactions.

As a typical example of the screening for a microbial biocatalyst from nature, isolation of nitrilesynthesizing microorganisms, characterization of a new enzyme aldoxime dehydratase, and its function in the aldoxime-nitrile pathway are introduced. Catalytic properties of some of our enzymes were improved through a direct evolutionary approach.

Nonylphenol polyetoxylates (NPnEOs) metabolites; nonylphenol (NP), nonylphenol monoethoxylate (NP1EO), nonylphenoxyacetic acid (NPEC) (collectively referred to "NPE-c") were examined for their degradations by using of lab-scale UV/photocatalytic silicagel (ultraviolet photocatalytic degradation in the presence of silicagel coated with titanium dioxide as a catalyst) reactor. NPE-c degradations by UV/photocatalytic silicagel treatment reached approximately 85-93 % after 40 min irradiation independently of its initial concentration (between ca. 0.5 and 2.0mg/l). Any intermediates under the NPE-c degradation were not identified by GC/MS sample analysis. Degradations of NPE-c were followed pseudo first-order kinetics. Then, the effectiveness of UV/photocatalytic silicagel treatment for degradation of NPE-c was in the order of NPEC > NP > NP1EO.
