        Dynamic Model of the Aqueous Humor Circulation with Application to Simulation of the Treatment for Primary Open Angle Glaucoma

        Objective: In order to study the mechanism of the aqueous humor circulation and its relationship to the glaucoma macroscopically with engineering methods. Methods: A dynamistic model was presented, which can be used to simulate the situation and the treatment of the primary open angle glaucoma (POAG). The frame of the model was built based on the ophthalmically accepted feedback mechanism between the aqueous humor circulation and the intraocular pressure (IOP). The transfer functions and the parameters were educed from the analysis of physiological theories, the basic elements of hydrodynamics, and the clinical parameters. The relation between the parameters of the system and the episode mechanism of POAG was discussed. A digital method was used to simulate the Challenge test and some medicines' treatment of POAG, and the results were consistent with clinical observations. Results: The results of simulation illuminate that the model can simulate the mechanism of the aqueous humor circulation and the curative mechanism of some medicines under the physiological condition and the pathological condition of the POAG. Conclusion: a few parameters which can hardly be captured with clinical method could be obtained from the model. These parameters can be helpful for the diagnosis and prediction of the curative effect. (Journal of Korean Society of Medical Informatics 13-2, 139-146, 2007)

        Improving performance of medical image alignment through super-resolution

        Medical image alignment is an important tool for tracking patient conditions, but the quality of alignment is influenced bythe effectiveness of low-dose Cone-beam CT (CBCT) imaging and patient characteristics. To address these two issues, wepropose an unsupervised alignment method that incorporates a preprocessing super-resolution process. We constructed themodel based on a private clinical dataset and validated the enhancement of the super-resolution on alignment using clinicaland public data. Through all three experiments, we demonstrate that higher resolution data yields better results in the alignmentprocess. To fully constrain similarity and structure, a new loss function is proposed; Pearson correlation coefficientcombined with regional mutual information. In all test samples, the newly proposed loss function obtains higher resultsthan the common loss function and improve alignment accuracy. Subsequent experiments verified that, combined with thenewly proposed loss function, the super-resolution processed data boosts alignment, can reaching up to 9.58%. Moreover,this boost is not limited to a single model, but is effective in different alignment models. These experiments demonstratethat the unsupervised alignment method with super-resolution preprocessing proposed in this study effectively improvedalignment and plays an important role in tracking different patient conditions over time.

        Polyethylene Terephthalate/Carbon Fabric/Polyurethane Foam Sandwich Composites: Flame Retardance and Mechanical Properties

        Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) nonwoven fabrics, carbon fabrics (CF), and flexible polyurethane (PU) foamsare made into novel sandwich composites using one-step molding. The flame retradance and mechanical properties of thesandwich composites are evaluated, examining the influences of the content of flame retardant agent (20, 30, 40, and 50 wt%)and areal density of PET panels (200, 300, and 400 g/m2). The test results show that the PET/CF/PU sandwich composites arerated flame retardant as V0 and do not generate melts. The failure mode of PET/CF/PU sandwich composites converts fromoverall fracture to layered fracture as a result of increasing the flame retardant agent. The tensile strength at break of PET/CF/PU sandwich composites with corresponding PET panels is 650 N for 200 g/m2, 928 N for 300 g/m2, and 1744 N for 400 g/m2,which are 42.63 %, 60.48 %, and 77.85 % greater than those of the PET/PU sandwich composites. Moreover, the burstingstrength of PET/CF/PU sandwich composites with corresponding PET panels is 3322 N for 200 g/m2, 3869 N for 300 g/m2,and 4978 N for 400 g/m2, which are 195 %, 180 %, and 143 % greater than those of the PET/PU sandwich composites.

        Major ginsenosides from Panax ginseng promote aerobic cellular respiration and SIRT1-mediated mitochondrial biosynthesis in cardiomyocytes and neurons

        Background: Aerobic cellular respiration provides chemical energy, adenosine triphosphate (ATP), to maintain multiple cellular functions. Sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) can deacetylate peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator 1 alpha (PGC-1α) to promote mitochondrial biosynthesis. Targeting energy metabolism is a potential strategy for the prevention and treatment of various diseases, such as cardiac and neurological disorders. Ginsenosides, one of the major bioactive constituents of Panax ginseng, have been extensively used due to their diverse beneficial effects on healthy subjects and patients with different diseases. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms of total ginsenosides (GS) on energy metabolism remain unclear. Methods: In this study, oxygen consumption rate, ATP production, mitochondrial biosynthesis, glucose metabolism, and SIRT1-PGC-1α pathways in untreated and GS-treated different cells, fly, and mouse models were investigated. Results: GS pretreatment enhanced mitochondrial respiration capacity and ATP production in aerobic respiration-dominated cardiomyocytes and neurons, and promoted tricarboxylic acid metabolism in cardiomyocytes. Moreover, GS clearly enhanced NAD<sup>+</sup>-dependent SIRT1 activation to increase mitochondrial biosynthesis in cardiomyocytes and neurons, which was completely abrogated by nicotinamide. Importantly, ginsenoside monomers, such as Rg1, Re, Rf, Rb1, Rc, Rh1, Rb2, and Rb3, were found to activate SIRT1 and promote energy metabolism. Conclusion: This study may provide new insights into the extensive application of ginseng for cardiac and neurological protection in healthy subjects and patients.

      • A Novel Algorithm for Aggregating the Topological Nodes in Web GIS Network Management

        The problems of the icons covering each other and slow data loading are very challenging when the GIS technology is applied to load a large number of topological nodes. A novel algorithm for aggregating the topological nodes in GIS based on the hierarchical clustering algorithm is presented in this paper. Comparison with the hierarchical clustering algorithm and partitioning algorithm is explored. In addition, the implementation of the algorithm is derived. The experiment demonstrates that the algorithm solved the problems of the icons covering each other and slow data loading effectively, realized the aggregation of the topological nodes preferably, and presented the distributed trend of the topological nodes and the topology relation between each other in the topology. The experimental results verify the effectiveness of the method.

        A pilot study on differential expression of microRNAs in the ventromedial prefrontal cortex and serum of sows in activity restricted crates or activity free pens

        Objective: Physical activity restriction in sows may lead to behavioral abnormalities and affective disorders. However, the psychophysiological state of these sows is still unclear. As miRNAs can be used as effective markers of psychopathy, the present study aimed to assess the difference in microRNA expression between the long-term activity restricted sows and activity free sows, thus contributing to the understanding of abnormal sow behavior. Methods: Four dry sows (sixth parity, Large×White genetic line) were selected from activity restricted crates (RC) or activity free pens (FP) separately. microRNAs in the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vMPFC) and serum were examined using real-time polymerase chain reaction, and the correlation between the miRNAs expressed in the vMPFC and serum was evaluated. Results: miR-134 (1.11 vs 0.84) and miR-1202 (1.09 vs 0.85) levels were higher in the vMPFC of the RC sows than in the FP sows (p<0.01). Furthermore, miR-132 (1.27 vs 1.08) and miR-335 (1.03 vs 0.84) levels were also higher in the RC sows than in FP sows (p<0.05); however, miR-135a, miR-135b, miR-16, and miR-124 levels were not different (p>0.05). The relative expression of serum miR-1202 was higher in the RC sows than in the FP sows (1.04 vs 0.54) (p<0.05), and there was a strong correlation (R = 0.757, p<0.05) between vMPFC and Serum levels of miR-1202. However, no significant difference was observed in miR-16 levels in the serum of the RC sows and FP sows (p>0.05). Conclusion: This pilot study demonstrates that long-term activity restriction in sows likely results in autism or other complex psychopathies with depression-like behaviors. These observations may provide new insights for future studies on abnormal behavior in sows and contribute to research on human psychopathy.

        Improvement of the Microstructure and Microhardness of AQ80 Magnesium Alloy by Repeated Upsetting-Extrusion

        In this work, a novel process of repeated upsetting-extrusion (RUE) was used to fabricate the AQ80 magnesium (Mg) alloy. The effects of deformation passes on the microstructure and microhardness of the RUEed AQ80 Mg alloy were studied. The results showed that {10–12} extension twins appeared in the sample after 1 pass of deformation compared to the initial sample, which divided the coarse grains and achieved the preliminary refinement of the grains. The grains were uniformly refined further with increasing RUE deformation passes, and after 3 passes, the average grain size was reduced from 27.4 to 3.0 μm. The grains were refined mainly by continuous dynamic recrystallization (CDRX), particle-stimulated nucleation (PSN), and discontinuous dynamic recrystallization (DDRX) mechanisms. After RUE deformation, the peak component of the texture was tilted by 0–20° toward the extrusion direction (ED) because of the increased activation of pyramidal < c + a > slip. The microhardness of the 3-pass RUE deformed sample increased by 12.9% compared to the initial sample. This is mainly attributable to fine-grained strengthening and second phase strengthening.

        Synthesis of Au@MoS2-CdS Ternary Composite Structure with Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity

        Au@MoS2-CdS, as ternary composite structure, was successfully synthesized by a facile process combining hydrothermal and seed-growth methods. The introduction of Au nanoparticles (NPs) into MoS2 spheres, forming a core–shell structure, demonstrats strong plasmonic absorption enhancement. The incorporation of CdS NPs into the Au@MoS2 core–shell structure further extends the absorption range of visible light and enhances exciton dissociation. The resultant composite structure exhibits the highest photocatalytic activity in photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) solution, compared with Au NPs, MoS2 spheres, Au@MoS2 core–shell and MoS2-CdS heterostructures. The above phenomena are supported by a series of characterization results such as SEM, TEM, XRD, EDS and UV-Vis, etc. Based on structural and morphological analyses, we propose the synthesis method of ternary composite structure photocatalysts, which is helpful for the synthesis of future multicomponent photocatalytic materials.

        Influence of In-Plane Simple Shear Strain on the Grain Orientation Regulation and Stretch Formability of Pre-twinned AZ31 Magnesium Alloy Sheet

        Pre-twin is widely accepted as an efficient method for weakening the basal texture to improve the plasticity of magnesium alloys, particularly for formability. However, the enhancement is limited since the largest Schmid factor (SF) of basal slip cannot be achieved. In-plane simple shear strain is used to control the twin orientation in accordance with Schmid law to further decrease the basal texture and improve the formability of the Mg alloys sheet. Consequently, secondary regulation of initial twin orientation (SRITO) technology, a novel combination procedure, was developed. In this method, the AZ31 Mg alloys sheet is compressed to pre-twins with various volumes (1%, 3%, and 5%), then the twin orientation is regulated by in-plane simple shear strain for the second time. Compared with the as-received sample, the average fracture elongation of the annealed sample with the best properties improves from 15.3 to 28.8%, and the Erichsen value increases from 2.8 to 6.1 mm due to the regulation of twin orientation.
