      • Interaction of <i>Veratrum nigrum</i> with <i>Panax ginseng</i> against Obesity: A Sang-ban Relationship

        <P>Obesity has become a major health threat in developed countries. However, current medications for obesity are limited because of their adverse effects. Interest in natural products for the treatment of obesity is thus rapidly growing. Korean Medicine (KM) is characterized by the wide use of herbal formulas. However, the combination rule of herbal formulas in KM lacks experimental evidence. According to <I>Shennong's Classic of Materia Medica</I>, the earliest book of herbal medicine, <I>Veratrum nigrum</I> (VN) has antagonistic features against <I>Panax ginseng</I> (PG), and the PG-VN pair is strictly forbidden. In this study, we have shown the effects of PG, VN, and their combination on obesity in high-fat (HF) diet-induced obese mice and in 3T3-L1 cells. PG, VN, and PG-VN combination significantly reduced weight gain and the fat pad weight in HF diet-induced obese mice. They also significantly decreased lipid accumulation and the expressions of two major adipogenesis factors, PPAR<I><I>γ</I></I> and C/EBP<I><I>α</I></I>, in 3T3-L1 cells. In addition, the PG-VN combination had synergistic effects compared with the mixture of extracts of PG and VN on inhibition of PPAR<I><I>γ</I></I> and C/EBP<I><I>α</I></I> expressions at lower doses. These results indicate a new potential anti-obese pharmacotherapy and also provide scientific evidence supporting the usage of herbal combinations instead of mixtures in KM.</P>

      • The critical pathway for cytoreductive surgery with bowel resection and anastomosis on ovarian cancer

        The aim of this study was to investigate the safety, feasibility, and economic impact of a clinical pathway for ovarian cancer, the critical pathway which encompasses cytoreductive surgery with bowel resection and anastomosis. Forty five patients who had cytoreductive surgery with bowel resection and anastomosis were studied. The patients` demographics at the time of their cytoreductive surgery were screened retrospectively. Twenty out of 45 ovarian cancer patients (44.4%) were assigned to the critical pathway group. This 20 patients consisted of 6 early (stage I or II), 9 advanced (stage III or IV), and 5 recurrent ovarian cancer patients (30.0%, 45% and 25%, respectively). There was no significant difference in the mean age, preoperative serum albumin, CA125, diabetes, and hypertension between the two groups with and without the critical pathway. Surgical procedure, completeness of optimal cytoreductive surgery, operation time, estimated blood loss, intraoperative transfusion, and the mean length of ICU stays did not differ between the two groups as well. However, there was a definite difference in the postoperative days until the beginning of oral diet, the removal of nasogastric tube, and flatus (5.8 vs. 7.7, 0.5 vs. 1.3, and 4.2 days vs. 5.2 days, respectively). Morbidity, total hospital stays, and total costs were not significantly different (32% vs. 35%, 23.6 days vs. 26.3 days, and $11,785 vs. $11,898, respectively). The critical pathway for primary cytoreductive surgery with bowel surgery in ovarian cancer patients appears to be feasible and safe. However, the critical pathway does not significantly reduce the length of stay at hospitals and hospital-related costs. These results should be verified further by future studies that incorporate a large-scale, randomized, multi-institutional, and collaborative investigation.

      • Grafting of Polyimide onto Chemically-Functionalized Graphene Nanosheets for Mechanically-Strong Barrier Membranes

        <P>A series of polyimide (PI) nanocomposite films with different loadings of aminophenyl functionalized graphene nanosheets (AP-rGO) was fabricated by in situ polymerization. AP-rGO, a multifunctional carbon nanofiller that can induce covalent bonding between graphene nanosheets and the PI matrix, was obtained through the combination of chemical reduction and surface modification. In addition, phenyl functionalized graphene nanosheets (P-rGO) were prepared by phenylhydrazine for reference nanocomposite films. Because of homogeneous dispersion of AP-rGO and the strong interfacial interaction between AP-rGO and the PI matrix, the resulting nanocomposite films that contained AP-rGO exhibited reinforcement effects of mechanical properties and oxygen barrier properties that were even better than those of pure PI and the reference nanocomposite films. In comparison to the tensile strength and tensile modules of pure PI, the composite films that contained AP-rGO with 3 wt % loading were increased by about 106% (262 MPa) and 52% (9.4 GPa), respectively.         Effects of Replacing Sucrose with Various Sugar Alcohols on Quality Properties of Semi-dried Jerky

        The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of replacing sucrose with sugar alcohols (sorbitol, glycerol and xylitol) on the quality properties of semi-dried jerky. Total 7 treatments of jerkies were prepared as follows: control with sucrose, and treatments with 2.5 and 5.0% of sucrose replaced by each sugar alcohol, respectively. Drying yield, pH, water activity, moisture content, shear force, myofibrillar fragmentation index (MFI), 2-thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) value, sugar content, and sensory evaluation were evaluated. Xylitol slightly decreased the pH when compared to the other sugar alcohols (p>0.05). The water activity of the semidried jerky was significantly reduced by treatment with glycerol and xylitol (p<0.05). The moisture content of semi-dried jerky containing various sugar alcohols was significantly higher than that of the control (p<0.05), while replacing sucrose with glycerol yielded the highest moisture content. The shear force of semi-dried jerky containing sugar alcohols was not significantly different for the sorbitol and glycerol treatments, but that replacing sucrose with 5.0% xylitol demonstrated the lowest shear force (p<0.05). The TBARS values of semi-dried jerkies with sugar alcohols were lower than the control (p<0.05). The sugar content of the semi-dried jerkies containing sorbitol and glycerol were lower than the control and xylitol treatment (p<0.05). In comparison with the control, the 5.0% xylitol treatment was found to be significantly different in the sensory evaluation (p<0.05). In conclusion, semi-dried jerky made by replacement with sugar alcohols improved the quality characteristics, while xylitol has applicability in manufacturing meat products.

        Dilution of Precision (DOP), as a measure of positioning accuracy, is an essential factor. Therefore, the DOP relationship between systems is very important. In this paper, the DOP relationship between TDOA and TOA in systems lacking clock bias is derived analytically and verified experimentally. Also, using those of earlier studies, the DOP relationship in each of defined systems is derived analytically.

        Pyridine-functionalized graphene/polyimide nanocomposites; mechanical, gas barrier, and catalytic effects

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>In this paper, we describe a functionalization route for synthesizing pyridine-functionalized reduced graphene oxide (Py-rGO) and the effect in the polymer matrix. In addition, polyimide (PI) nanocomposites with different loadings of Py-rGO are fabricated by in-situ polymerization. Py-rGO can perform as a filler component, which enhances the mechanical properties of the composites as well as promote polycondensation as a catalyst. As a result, the PIs containing Py-rGO are obtained with a high degree of imidization and the nanocomposite films show improved mechanical properties and oxygen barrier properties compared to pure PI. To be specific, the tensile strength and tensile modules of the nanocomposite with 0.5 wt% loading of Py-rGO are enhanced by about 406% (527 MPa) and 928% (59 GPa) in comparison to those of pure PI, respectively.         Correlation of Curved Walking Ability with Straight Walking Ability and Motor Function in Patients with Hemiplegia

        Purpose: In real life there are both straight-paths and curved-paths. To evaluate walking ability of both kinds, a figure-8 walking test (F8WT) was developed. The aim of this study was to validate the measure in hemiplegic patients with walking difficulties and to identify correlations of curved walking ability with straight walking ability, motor function, and walking performance ability. Methods: Twenty subjects participated in this study. Curved walking was measured by a F8WT. Straight walking ability was measured by a 10-meter walking test (10MWT). Dynamic balancea bility was measured by timed up and go (TUG) tests. Walking performance ability was measured using a modified motor assessment scale (MMAS). Motor function was measured by the Fugl-Meyer assessment (FMA) scale. Data were analyzed using Pearson correlation analysis. Linear regression analyses were performed to explore other functional tests in mobility ability by F8WT time, 10MWT (dependent variable). Results: There was a significant positive correlation of F8WT time with 10MWT and TUG. There was a significant negative correlation of F8WT time with MMAS and FMA-coordination. There was a significant positive correlation of 10MWT with TUG. There was a significant negative correlation of 10MWT with MMAS and FMA-coordination. The F8WT time for curved walking ability was attributed to 10MWT for straight walking ability as 94% level of contribution. Conclusion: The results suggest that the F8WT is a good instrument for measuring walking ability because there is a robust correlation of F8WT time with 10MWT, TUG, MMAS, and FMA-coordination in hemiplegic patients who, after stroke, have a mobility deficiency.

      • Inverse Relationship Between <i>Helicobacter Pylori</i> Infection and Asthma Among Adults Younger than 40 Years : A Cross-Sectional Study

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>Recent studies have suggested that <I>Helicobacter pylori</I> could prevent allergic disease, particularly in children. However, whether this is true in adults is controversial. The aim of this study was to investigate whether there is negative association between <I>H. pylori</I> infection and asthma among adults in an area with a high prevalence of <I>H. pylori</I>.</P><P>This was a cross-sectional study using 2011 health surveillance data. Blood samples were taken from all participants to measure serum <I>H. pylori</I> IgG status. Information on demographics, socioeconomic status, and medical history, including asthma and other allergic conditions were collected by a questionnaire.</P><P>Of the 15,032 patients, 9492 (63.1%) had a history of <I>H. pylori</I> infection, 359 (2.4%) had asthma, and 3277 (21.8%) had other allergic conditions. <I>H. pylori</I> infection was positively correlated with age (OR, 1.050; 95% CI, 1.047–1.053, <I>P</I> < 0.001). Asthma history was positively correlated with age (OR, 1.022; 95% CI, 1.013–1.032, <I>P</I> < 0.001). <I>H. pylori</I> and age were shown to have interaction on asthma in the total participants (OR, 1.041; 95% CI, 1.021–1.062, <I>P</I> < 0.001). In subgroup analysis, <I>H. pylori</I> infection among those < 40 years old was inversely correlated with asthma (OR, 0.503; 95% CI, 0.280–0.904, <I>P</I> = 0.021). Other allergic conditions were not related with <I>H. pylori</I> infection among the total and those <40 years old.</P><P>The inverse association between <I>H. pylori</I> infection and asthma among young adults suggests that the underlying immune mechanism induced by <I>H. pylori</I> infection may affect allergic reactions associated with asthma in young adults.</P>
