• Scalable joint segmentation and registration framework for infant brain images

        Dong, Pei,Wang, Li,Lin, Weili,Shen, Dinggang,Wu, Guorong Elsevier 2017 Neurocomputing Vol.229 No.-

Abstract

The first year of life is the most dynamic and perhaps the most critical phase of postnatal brain development. The ability to accurately measure structure changes is critical in early brain development study, which highly relies on the performances of image segmentation and registration techniques. However, either infant image segmentation or registration, if deployed independently, encounters much more challenges than segmentation/registration of adult brains due to dynamic appearance change with rapid brain development. In fact, image segmentation and registration of infant images can assists each other to overcome the above challenges by using the growth trajectories (i.e., temporal correspondences) learned from a large set of training subjects with complete longitudinal data. Specifically, a one-year-old image with ground-truth tissue segmentation can be first set as the reference domain. Then, to register the infant image of a new subject at earlier age, we can estimate its tissue probability maps, i.e., with sparse patch-based multi-atlas label fusion technique, where only the training images at the respective age are considered as atlases since they have similar image appearance. Next, these probability maps can be fused as a good initialization to guide the level set segmentation. Thus, image registration between the new infant image and the reference image is free of difficulty of appearance changes, by establishing correspondences upon the reasonably segmented images. Importantly, the segmentation of new infant image can be further enhanced by propagating the much more reliable label fusion heuristics at the reference domain to the corresponding location of the new infant image via the learned growth trajectories, which brings image segmentation and registration to assist each other. It is worth noting that our joint segmentation and registration framework is also flexible to handle the registration of any two infant images even with significant age gap in the first year of life, by linking their joint segmentation and registration through the reference domain. Thus, our proposed joint segmentation and registration method is scalable to various registration tasks in early brain development studies. Promising segmentation and registration results have been achieved for infant brain MR images aged from 2-week-old to 1-year-old, indicating the applicability of our method in early brain development study.

Highlights

We developed an efficient approach to deal with the tissue segmentation and registration for the infant brain MR images.

Our proposed framework is scalable to various registration tasks in early brain development studies.

Promising results have been achieved for infant brain MR images aged from 2-week-old to 1-year-old.

The proposed technique can be very useful for many ongoing early brain development studies.

      • Experimental and numerical validation of guided wave based on time-reversal for evaluating grouting defects of multi-interface sleeve

        Dong-Sheng Li,Jiahe Liu,Li Tang,Wei Shen 국제구조공학회 2024 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.33 No.1

Grouting sleeves are an essential connecting component of prefabricated components, and the quality of grouting has a significant influence on structural integrity and seismic performance. The embedded grouting sleeve (EGS)'s grouting defects are highly undetectable and random, and no effective monitoring method exists. This paper proposes an ultrasonic guided wave method and provides a set of guidelines for selecting the optimal frequency and suitable period for the EGS. The optimal frequency was determined by considering the group velocity, wave structure, and wave attenuation of the selected mode. Guided waves are prone to multi-modality, modal conversion, energy leakage, and dispersion in the EGS, which is a multi-layer structure. Therefore, a time-reversal (TR)-based multi-mode focusing and dispersion automatic compensation technology is introduced to eliminate the multi-mode phase difference in the EGS. First, the influence of defects on guided waves is analyzed according to the TR coefficient. Second, two major types of damage indicators, namely, the time domain and the wavelet packet energy, are constructed according to the influence method. The constructed wavelet packet energy indicator is more sensitive to the changes of defecting than the conventional time-domain similarity indicator. Both numerical and experimental results show that the proposed method is feasible and beneficial for the detection and quantitative estimation of the grouting defects of the EGS.

      • Risk Factors for Surgical Site Infections after Liver Resec-tion (A Multivariate Analysis of 6,132 Patients)

        ( Li-yang Sun ),( Jiong-jie Yu ),( Ju-dong Li ),( Xin-fei Xu ),( Jia-he Wang ),( Bing Quan ),( Wen-tao Yan ),( Feng Shen ),( Chao Li ),( Lei Liang ),( Tian Yang ) 대한간학회 2018 춘·추계 학술대회 (KASL) Vol.2018 No.1

Aims: Surgical site infection (SSI) is a common postoperative complication and associated with an increased morbidity, hospital stay, and overall cost. The aim of the present study was to identify risk factors for SSIs after hepatic resection based on a large single-center cohort. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted of 6,132 patients who underwent liver resection without concomitant biliary reconstruction or gastrointestinal procedures between 2014 and 2016 at the largest hepatic center in China. The occurrences of SSI, classified as incisional SSI and organ/space SSI within 30 days after operation were investigated. Patient- and surgical-related risk variables were collected using standardized data collection form. A likelihood ratio forward regression model was used to assess the independent association of risk factors with SSI. Results: SSI developed in 587 patients (9.6%), including superficial/deep incisional SSI in 357 patients (5.8 %), and organ/ space SSI in 304 patients (5.0 %). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that obesity, diabetes mellitus, ASA score ≥ 2, liver cirrhosis, re-hepatectomy, hepatoliathiasis, and intraoperative blood transfusion were independent risk factors of overall SSI. However, incisional and organ/space SSI differed from each other with respect to risk factors. Among a variety of risk factors, hepatolithiasis, liver cirrhosis, and intraoperative blood transfusion were consistently associated with both incisional and organ/space SSI. Conclusions: SSI is a common complication after liver resection, and more caution should be taken in patients with hepatolithiasis or liver cirrhosis. Prevention strategies focusing on factors associated with SSI is necessary in order to reduce SSI after liver resection.

Pose Measuring and Aligning of a Micro Glass Tube and a Hole on the Micro Sphere

Fu-Dong Li,De Xu,Zheng-Tao Zhang,Ya-Li Shi,Fei Shen 한국정밀공학회 2014 International Journal of Precision Engineering and Vol. No.

To ensure high uniformity of the inner space of the hollow sphere after assembly, the glass tube must be inserted into the hole on thesphere towards the center of the sphere. This paper deals with the pose measuring of the hole on the sphere and the glass tube andpose aligning of the two objects. The sphere is 500 mm in diameter with a 20 mm hole on it, and the glass tube is 17 mm in diameter. Novel pose measuring method for the hole on the sphere and the glass tube is developed, using two microscopic cameras, each oneacquires a projection vector of the object to be measured. A plane containing the optical axis of the microscopic camera and the posevector of the object is determined, with the microscopic camera calibrated in advance. Pose vector of the object to be measured canbe calculated by the intersection of the two planes acquired by the two microscopic cameras. Error analysis of the pose measuringmethod is conducted and experimental results were consistent with analytical results. Less than 0.7o pose aligning error is achievedusing the proposed pose measuring method and pose aligning method.

        Han Ying-Hao,Chen Dong-Qin,Jin Mei-Hua,Jin Ying-Hua,Li Jing,Shen Gui-Nan,Li Wei-Long,Gong Yi-Xi,Mao Ying-Ying,Xie Dan-Ping,Lee Dong-Seok,Yu Li-Yun,Kim Sun-Uk,김지수,권태호,Cui Yu-Dong,Sun Hu-Nan 한국응용생명화학회 2020 Applied Biological Chemistry (Appl Biol Chem) Vol.63 No.3

Severe inflammatory reactions caused by macrophage activation can trigger a systemic immune response. In the present study, we observed the anti-inflammatory properties of hispidin on LPS induced RAW264.7 macrophage cells. Our results showed that hispidin treatment significantly reduced the production of cellular NO, IL-6 and reactive oxygen species (ROS) while has not inhibitory effect on TNF-α productions. Excitingly, hispidin treatment retains the phagocytosis ability of macrophages which enabling them to perform the function of removing foreign invaders. Signaling studies showed, hispidin treatment dramatic suppressed the LPS induced mitogen activated protein kinases (MAPK) and JAK/STAT activations. In conclusion, our findings suggest that hispidin may be a new therapeutic target for clinical treatment of macrophages-mediated inflammatory responses.

      • Is Surgical Resection Justified for Hepatocellular Carcinoma with Portal Vein Tumor Thrombus? (A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis)

        ( Liang Lei ),( Xin-fei Xu ),( Jiong-jie Yu ),( Ju-dong Li ),( Zhen-li Li ),( Jun Han ),( Han Zhang ),( Hao Xing ),( Han Wu ),( Ming-da Wang ),( Chao Li ),( Zheng Wang ),( Feng Shen ),( Meng-chao Wu ) 대한간학회 2018 춘·추계 학술대회 (KASL) Vol.2018 No.1

Aims: The prognosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with portal vein tumor thrombus (PVTT) is very poor. According to the BCLC treatment recommendations, sorafenib or other palliative treatment (PT) is recommended as the first-line therapy when it happens. In real world, however, a significant number of selected patients with HCC and PVTT suffered from surgical resection (SR). Methods: PubMed, Embase, Medline and Cochrane library were searched for studies comparing SR with PT (including TACE, sorafenib, etc.) for HCC with PVTT, which were published before September 2017. Results: 4,810 patients from 7 studies were enrolled in this meta-analysis, which divided into the SR group (n = 2,344) and the PT group (n = 2476). When compared with the PT group, the pooled hazard ratio (HR) for the 1, 3 and 5-year OS rates of the SR group were 0.56 (95% CI 0.52-0.60, P=0.03), 0.56 (95% CI 0.53-0.59, P<0.001) and 0.55 (95% CI 0.54-0.57, P<0.001). For subgroup analysis, when compared with the mere TACE group, the pooled HR for the 1, 3 and 5-year OS rates of the SR group were 0.54 (95% CI 0.43-0.67, P=0.81), 0.75 (95% CI 0.65-0.87, P=0.25) and 0.76 (95% CI 0.67-0.88, P=0.25). Conclusions: This meta-analysis demonstrated SR had better OS than TACE or other palliative therapy for HCC with PVTT. SR may be suitable as the first-line treatment for selected patients with resectable HCC and removable PVTT.

Cataytic Hydrogenation of o-Nitrochlorbenzene to 3,3'-Dichlorobenzidine

Shen, Kaihua,Li, Shude,Choi, Dong-Hoon Korean Chemical Society 2002 Bulletin of the Korean Chemical Society Vol.23 No.12

2,2'-Dichlorohydroazobenzene was prepared by selective hydrogenation of o-nitrochlorobenzene with hydrogen in the presence of 0.8% and 5% Pd/C catalyst. O-Chloroaniline was a minor product in the catalytic hydrogenation of o-nitrochlorobenzene. The effects of base, Pd/C catalyst, and co-catalyst were discussed on catalytic hydrogenation. 2,2'-Dichlorohydroazobenzene, as an intermediate, was rearranged to 3,3'-dichlorobenzidine after reacting with HCl. It was shown that selectivity of catalytic hydrogenation of o-nitro-chlorobenzene is affected strongly by concentration of base, Pd/C catalyst, and co-catalyst. $^1Hand^{13}C$NMR spectroscopy confirmed the chemical structures of 2,2'-dichlorohydrazobenzene and 3,3'-dichlorobenzidine.
