The effect of S-functionalized and vacancies on V2C MXenes as anode materials for Na-ion and Li-ion batteries

        Ya-Meng Li,Yong-Liang Guo,Zhao-Yong Jiao 한국물리학회 2020 Current Applied Physics Vol.20 No.2

The electrochemical properties of V2C and V2CT2 (T = O, S) MXenes with and without vacancy as anode materials for Na-ion and Li-ion batteries, have been studied using first-principles calculation. The present results indicate that the adsorption strength of Li-ion and Na-ion on V2CS2 are less than that of O-functionalized, together with a lower diffusion barrier. Simultaneously, V2CS2 monolayer exhibits lower open-circuit voltage (OCV) values of 0.72 and 0.49 V for Li- and Na-ion, respectively. Interestingly, the presence of atomic vanadium vacancy on V2CS2 monolayer exerts more prominent effects on enhancing adsorption strength than that of carbon vacancy for Li-ion and Na-ion, but with an exception for the diffusion of Li-ion and Na-ion on V2CS2 monolayer. The finding suggests that the V2CS2 monolayer is expected to be a potential candidate as anode material for Li-ion and Na-ion battery due to its lower open-circuit voltages and diffusion barriers.

Analysis of Staphylococcus aureus cell viability, sublethal injury and death induced by synergistic combination of ultrasound and mild heat

        Li, Jiao,Suo, Yuanjie,Liao, Xinyu,Ahn, Juhee,Liu, Donghong,Chen, Shiguo,Ye, Xingqian,Ding, Tian Elsevier 2017 Ultrasonics sonochemistry Vol.39 No.-

Abstract

This study was designed to investigate the combined effects of ultrasound and mild heat on the viability of S. aureus in association with the cell membrane integrity and intracellular enzyme activity. Cells were treated by ultrasound under 55°C for 3, 5, 7, 10, and 15min. The dynamic changes of S. aureus cell viability, sublethal injury and death were evaluated using flow cytometric assay. Microscopies were applied to identify the morphological appearance, ultrastructure and topography of S. aureus. The results showed the membrane damage was synchronous with esterase inhibition during the exposure to sonication, leading to the immediate lethal effect. On the other hand, bacteria under the mild heat at 55°C were inactivated via a sublethal injury process. The different lethal modes were observed between sonication and mild heat treatments, which could synergistically inactivate S. aureus. The antibacterial value of thermo-sonication was greater than the sum of the individual treatments. The thermo-sonication combination synergistically reduced the number of sublethal cells and also resulted in severe cell damage.

Highlights

The lethal modes induced by ultrasound and mild heat were different.

Two sterilization techniques were synergistic in cell inactivation.

Cell viability, sublethal injury and death were distinguished by flow cytometry.

Thermo-sonication treatment reduced the number of sublethal cells.

Microscopies revealed S. aureus morphological changes and bactericidal effect.

      • Diagnostic Value of Endorectal Ultrasound in Preoperative Assessment of Lymph Node Involvement in Colorectal Cancer: a Meta-analysis

        Li, Li,Chen, Shi,Wang, Ke,Huang, Jiao,Liu, Li,Wei, Sheng,Gao, Hong-Yu Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2015 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.16 No.8

Background: Nodal invasion by colorectal cancer is a critical determinant in estimating patient survival and in choosing appropriate preoperative treatment. The present meta-analysis was designed to evaluate the diagnostic value of endorectal ultrasound (EUS) in preoperative assessment of lymph node involvement in colorectal cancer. Materials and Methods: We systematically searched PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) databases for relevant studies published on or before December 10th, 2014. The sensitivity, specificity, likelihood ratios, diagnostic odds ratio (DOR) and area under the summary receiver operating characteristics curve (AUC) were assessed to estimate the diagnostic value of EUS. Subgroup analysis and meta-regression were performed to explore heterogeneity across studies. Results: Thirty-three studies covering 3,016 subjects were included. The pooled sensitivity and specificity were 0.69 (95%CI: 0.63-0.75) and 0.77 (95%CI: 0.73-0.82), respectively. The positive and negative likelihood ratios were 3.09 (95%CI: 2.52-3.78) and 0.39 (95%CI: 0.32-0.48), respectively. The DOR was 7.84 (95%CI: 5.56-11.08), and AUC was 0.80 (95%CI: 0.77-0.84). Conclusions: This meta-analysis indicated that EUS has moderate diagnostic value in preoperative assessment of lymph node involvement in colorectal cancer. Further refinements in technology and diagnostic criteria are necessary to improve the diagnostic accuracy of EUS.

Ontogenetic Expression of Lpin2 and Lpin3 Genes and Their Associations with Traits in Two Breeds of Chinese Fat-tailed Sheep

        Jiao, Xiao-Li,Jing, Jiong-Jie,Qiao, Li-Ying,Liu, Jian-Hua,Li, Liu-An,Zhang, Jing,Jia, Xia-Li,Liu, Wen-Zhong Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2016 Animal Bioscience Vol.29 No.3

Lipins play dual function in lipid metabolism by serving as phosphatidate phosphatase and transcriptional co-regulators of gene expression. Mammalian lipin proteins consist of lipin1, lipin2, and lipin3 and are encoded by their respective genes Lpin1, Lpin2, and Lpin3. To date, most studies are concerned with Lpin1, only a few have addressed Lpin2 and Lpin3. Ontogenetic expression of Lpin2 and Lpin3 and their associations with traits would help to explore their molecular and physiological functions in sheep. In this study, 48 animals with an equal number of males and females each for both breeds of fat-tailed sheep such as Guangling Large Tailed (GLT) and Small Tailed Han (STH) were chosen to evaluate the ontogenetic expression of Lpin2 and Lpin3 from eight different tissues and months of age by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Associations between gene expression and slaughter and tail traits were also analyzed. The results showed that Lpin2 mRNA was highly expressed in perirenal and tail fats, and was also substantially expressed in liver, kidney, reproductive organs (testis and ovary), with the lowest levels in small intestine and femoral biceps. Lpin3 mRNA was prominently expressed in liver and small intestine, and was also expressed at high levels in kidney, perirenal and tail fats as well as reproductive organs (testis and ovary), with the lowest level in femoral biceps. Global expression of Lpin2 and Lpin3 in GLT both were significantly higher than those in STH. Spatiotemporal expression showed that the highest levels of Lpin2 expression occurred at 10 months of age in two breeds of sheep, with the lowest expression at 2 months of age in STH and at 8 months of age in GLT. The greatest levels of Lpin3 expression occurred at 4 months of age in STH and at 10 months of age in GLT, with the lowest expression at 12 months of age in STH and at 8 months of age in GLT. Breed and age significantly influenced the tissue expression patterns of Lpin2 and Lpin3, respectively, and sex significantly influenced the spatiotemporal expression patterns of Lpin3. Meanwhile, Lpin2 and Lpin3 mRNA expression both showed significant correlations with slaughter and tail traits, and the associations appear to be related with the ontogenetic expression as well as the potential functions of lipin2 and lipin3 in sheep.

Value of contrast-enhanced ultrasonography in microwave ablation treatment of symptomatic focal uterine adenomyosis

        Xiao-Long Li,Jia-Xin Li,Song-Yuan Yu,Pei-Li Fan,Yun-Jie Jin,Er-Jiao Xu,Sai-Nan Guan,Er-Ya Deng,Qiu-Yan Li,Zheng-Biao Ji,Jiu-Ling Qi,Hui-Xiong Xu,China Alliance of Multi-Center Clinical Study for Ultra 대한초음파의학회 2024 ULTRASONOGRAPHY Vol.43 No.1

Purpose: This study evaluated the value of contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS) in the ultrasound-guided microwave ablation (MWA) treatment of symptomatic focal uterine adenomyosis. Methods: This retrospective study was conducted between March 2020 and January 2023, enrolling 52 patients with symptomatic focal uterine adenomyosis who had undergone MWA. All patients were examined with CEUS before and after MWA. The non-perfused volume (NPV) was compared between CEUS and dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCEMRI) following ablation. Therapeutic efficacy and safety were evaluated at 3-, 6-, and 12-month follow-ups. Additionally, this study explored the correlations between pre-treatment CEUS features and a volume reduction ratio indicating sufficient ablation, defined as 50% or more at the 3-month follow-up.Results: No significant differences in NPV were noted between CEUS and DCE-MRI immediately after MWA and during follow-up (all P>0.05). At the 3-month follow-up, the median VRRs for the uterus and adenomyosis were 33.2% and 63.9%, respectively. Sufficient ablation was achieved in 69.2% (36/52) of adenomyosis cases, while partial ablation was observed in the remaining 30.8% (16/52). The identification of non-enhancing areas on pre-treatment CEUS was associated with sufficient ablation (P=0.016). At the 12-month follow-up, significant decreases were observed in both the uterine and adenomyosis volumes (all P<0.001). Dysmenorrhea and menorrhagia were significantly alleviated at 12 months, and no major complications were encountered. Conclusion: CEUS can be used to evaluate the ablation zone of focal adenomyosis that has been treated with MWA, similarly to DCE-MRI. The identification of non-enhancing areas on pretreatment CEUS indicates satisfactory treatment outcomes. Tumor Targeting and pH-Responsive Polyelectrolyte Complex Nanoparticles Based on Hyaluronic Acid-Paclitaxel Conjugates and Chitosan for Oral Delivery of Paclitaxel

        Jiao Li,Pingsheng Huang,Longlong Chang,Xingwen Long,Anjie Dong,Jinjian Liu,Liping Chu,Fuqiang Hu,Jianfeng Liu,Liandong Deng 한국고분자학회 2013 Macromolecular Research Vol.21 No.12

A new platform of paclitaxel (PTX) for application as an oral delivery system was developed, by combining the pH sensitivity of polyelectrolyte complex nanoparticles (CNPs) and the active targeting of hyaluronic acid (HA). Chitosan/hyaluronic acid-paclitaxel (CS/HA-PTX) CNPs were prepared by coating the CS onto the HA-PTX nanoparticles (NPs), and characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). HA-PTX conjugates could self-assemble into NPs in aqueous solution with an average size of 100±5 nm, and the PTX content of HA-PTX conjugates was 10.6 wt%. The CS/HA-PTX CNPs had a smaller size and higher PTX content when the ratio of positive charge to negative charge was 2:1. The in vitro release of PTX from CNPs was pH-responsive,suggesting that the CS shell could prevent the breakage of the ester bond in HA-PTX NPs in acidic pH conditions. HA-PTX NPs exhibited higher cellular uptake than free PTX against HepG2 cells via receptor-mediated endocytosis. PTX could accumulate remarkably into tumor sites after oral administration of CNPs. These results indicate that the CNP drug delivery system has great potential for applications in the oral administration of hydrophobic drugs.

THE PERIODIC JACOBI MATRIX PROCRUSTES PROBLEM

        Jiao-fen Li,XI-YAN HU 한국전산응용수학회 2010 Journal of applied mathematics & informatics Vol.28 No.3

The following ”Periodic Jacobi Procrustes” problem is stud-ied: find the Periodic Jacobi matrix X which minimizes the Frobenius (or Euclidean) norm of AX −B, with A and B as given rectangular matrices. The class of Procrustes problems has many application in the biological, physical and social sciences just as in the investigation of elastic struc-tures. The different problems are obtained varying the structure of the matrices belonging to the feasible set. Higham has solved the orthogonal, the symmetric and the positive definite cases. Andersson and Elfving have studied the symmetric positive semidefinite case and the (symmetric) el-ementwise nonnegative case. In this contribution, we extend and develop these research, however, in a relatively simple way. Numerical difficulties are discussed and illustrated by examples.

INVERSE CONSTRAINED MINIMUM SPANNING TREE PROBLEM UNDER HAMMING DISTANCE

Jiao, Li,Tang, Heng-Young The Korean Society for Computational and Applied M 2010 Journal of applied mathematics & informatics Vol.28 No.1

In this paper, inverse constrained minimum spanning tree problem under Hamming distance. Such an inverse problem is to modify the weights with bound constrains so that a given feasible solution becomes an optimal solution, and the deviation of the weights, measured by the weighted Hamming distance, is minimum. We present a strongly polynomial time algorithm to solve the inverse constrained minimum spanning tree problem under Hamming distance.

      • Clinical Features of Multiple Primary Malignancies: a Retrospective Analysis of 72 Chinese Patients

Jiao, Feng,Yao, Li-Juan,Zhou, Jin,Hu, Hai,Wang, Li-Wei Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.1

There is a scarcity of reports addressing patients with multiple primary malignancies (MPM), especially for Chinese cses. The aim of this study was to present a detailed analysis of Chinese patients presenting with at least two primary malignancies. Particularly, the clinical characteristics and survival between synchronous and metachronous MPM were compared. Out of 6,545 cases, 72 patients (1.1%) including 39 males (54.2%) and 33 females (45.8%) were diagnosed as MPM, giving a male: female sex ratio of 1.2:1. Of these, there were 16 (22.2%) cases of synchronous MPM (7 males, 9 females), 55(76.4%) metachronous (31 males, 24 females), and 1 "mixed form". For first tumor diagnosis time, synchronous MPM patients generally presented later than the metachronous cases. The top three sites for malignancies with metachronous MPM were colorectum, head and neck, and lung, while for synchronous they were lung, colorectum and breast. Among MPM patients, the median survival time was 15.7 years and the 5-year survival was 56%, and there was statistical difference in MPM categories (P < 0.05). The median survival time was 17.3 years and 3.8 years for metachronous and synchronous MPM patients, respectively. In comparison with synchronous MPM patients, those metachronous had a longer survival. This studies increase understanding of the clinical features of Chinese MPM patients and suggest that those presenting with metachronous cancers have a higher incidence and a better prognosis.
