Background: Temperature is an essential condition in red ginseng processing. The pharmacological activities of red ginseng under different steam temperatures are significantly different. Methods: In this study, an ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography quadrupole time-of-flight tandem mass spectrometry was developed to distinguish the red ginseng products that were steamed at high and low temperatures. Multivariate statistical analyses such as principal component analysis and supervised orthogonal partial least squared discrimination analysis were used to determine the influential components of the different samples. Results: The results showed that different steamed red ginseng samples can be identified, and the characteristic components were 20-gluco-ginsenoside Rf, ginsenoside Re, ginsenoside Rg1, and malonyl-ginsenoside Rb1 in red ginseng steamed at low temperature. Meanwhile, the characteristic components in red ginseng steamed at high temperature were 20R-ginsenoside Rs3 and ginsenoside Rs4. Polar ginsenosides were abundant in red ginseng steamed at low temperature, whereas higher levels of less polar ginsenosides were detected in red ginseng steamed at high temperature. Conclusion: This study makes the first time that differences between red ginseng steamed under different temperatures and their ginsenosides transformation have been observed systematically at the chemistry level. The results suggested that the identified chemical markers can be used to illustrate the transformation of ginsenosides in red ginseng processing.

This meta-analysis was performed to evaluate the difference of the therapeutic efficacy and adverse effects of leukotriene receptor antagonist and theophylline added to inhaled corticosteroids in adult asthma. Databases were searched for studies published through Nov, 2010. Randomized-controlled trials containing inhaled corticosteroids plus leukotriene receptor antagonist and inhaled corticosteroids plus sustained-release theophylline for asthma therapy were selected. For each report, data were extracted to the outcomes analyzed: mean change in morning peak expiratory flow, mean change in evening peak expiratory flow, mean change in morning forced expiratory volume in 1 sec, mean change in daily short bete2-agonist use, asthma exacerbation and adverse effects. Four assessable trials including 182 asthmatic patients were identified. Inhaled corticosteroids plus leukotriene receptor antagonist was superior to inhaled corticosteroids plus theophylline therapy in improving morning peak expiratory flow in asthmatics (mean difference 19.08 [95% confidence interval 13.37-23.79] l/min, p<0.001) and morning forced expiratory volume in 1 sec in asthmatics (mean difference 0.09 [95% confidence interval 0.03-0.14] liter, p=0.001). In evening peak expiratory flow, daily short bete2-agonist use, asthma exacerbation and adverse effects, there was no significant difference between these two therapies (All p>0.05). Our meta-analysis showed that the combination of inhaled corticosteroids plus leukotriene receptor antagonist resulted in more improvement in both peak expiratory flow and forced expiratory volume in 1 sec in the morning than inhaled corticosteroids plus sustained-release theophylline in adult asthmatics. Further trials are necessary to evaluate the dominant effects of the former combination.
Control Strategy for an Electromechanical Transmission Vehicle Based on a Double Markov Process

Based on an analysis of the driving demand and system dynamics of heavy-duty vehicles equipped with electromechanical transmission (EMT), a double Markov model is put forward to represent drivers’ power demand for driving and electricity. Transfer probability matrices are calculated by utilizing the maximum likelihood estimation method. A power distribution control strategy based on stochastic dynamic programming (SDP) is proposed. With economy being the optimization goal, the model for power allocation control based on SDP is established while regarding the engine torque, motor speeds, vehicle speed and state of charge (SOC) as state variables’ engine speed and motor torques as control variables’ and power demands as interference variables. The SDP problem is solved by an improved policy iteration algorithm based on value iteration and policy iteration algorithms.

Organic acids are natural cellular metabolites, which are widely used in food, pharmaceutical, and chemical industries. Among them, L-lactic acid is of special interest, because it is widely used in food and pharmaceutical industries and its monopolymer (poly (lactic acid)) is a green, renewable, biodegradable, and biocompatible alternative to the petroleum-based polymers. Currently, organic acids are predominantly produced by microbial fermentation. Their productions have been substantially improved by genetic modifications, metabolic engineering, and fermentation optimizations. However, the commonly used microbial producers still suffer from low acidic tolerance. Screening higher tolerant acid-producing microorganisms from the nature is relatively less explored. The traditional fermented foods are good resources for the screening of acid-producing and probiotic microorganisms. However, they are relatively less explored, especially those foods in developing countries. To speed up the acid-producing microorganism screening, we developed and validated a high-throughput method in this study. By using this method, we screened 1,296 colonies in 4 days and obtained a panel of acid-producing microorganisms. Among them, a Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus showed the potential for organic acid production and probiotics applications.

Background/Aims: Colorectal cancer is the third leading incidence of malignant tumour in the world and the incidence of colorectal cancer has steadily been increasing in Asia in recently years. The aim of our study is to determine the basic demographic features of patients with colorectal cancer and the anatomic distribution and characteristics of the tumour in Guangdong population. Methods: A review of patients from 1990 to 2004 at five hospitals was conducted, including Peal Triangle Area in Guangdong (Nanfang Hospital and Huizhou Central People`s Hospital), North area of Guangdong (Shaoguan North-Guangdong People`s Hospital), West area of Guangdong (Affiliated Hospital Guangdong Medical Institute) and East area of Guangdong (Meizhou People`s Hospital). Results: Analysis was carried out on 6,501 patents, only 6,488 cases provided age. The age ranged from 5 years old to 91 years old and the mean age of 6,488 cases is 59. 5.2% (340/6,488) of the patients was young CRC patients. The peak incidence was between the ages 61 and 70 years old (29.5%). The mean age increases from 55 years old (1990-1992) to 61 years old (2002-2004) and the proportion of young CRC patients descends from 7.1% to 3.5%. The make to female ratio is 1.5:1 and the ratio increased with age increasing. Of 6,501 lesions, 3,423 (52.7%) were located in rectum and 3,078 (47.3%) in colon, the ratio of rectum cancer to colon cancer is 1.1:1. The proportion of rectum cancer decreased significantly from 74.5% (1990-1992) to 64.9% (2002-2004) and that of the right sides colon cancer increased from 25.5% to 35.1%. In four different areas, the mean age of CRC increasing and East area of Guangdong ranked the fist. There was no significant difference in the ratio of male to female. Conclusions: The demography of colorectal cancer in Guangdong is different from before and further study should be pursued to find the reason.

SO2 absorption capabilities of DEGDME+H2O system with different compositions were systemically investigated. The DEGDME+H2O system exhibited superior SO2 absorption capability and optimal desorption property with a desorption rate of higher than 94% under the desorption conditions. In addition, it has been demonstrated that the DEGDME+H2O system possessed remarkable SO2 absorbing and releasing capability after multiple recycles. Moreover, GLE data were measured for dilute SO2 in the system of DEGDME+H2O, in which SO2 partial pressures were determined in the range of 0 to 140 Pa. By fitting of GLE data, HLC, ΔH, ΔS and ΔG of SO2 absorption process were obtained. UV, FTIR, 1H-NMR, and 13C-NMR spectra of absorbing systems in the SO2 absorption processes were studied to elucidate the absorption mechanism. On the basis of the spectral results, the intermolecular hydrogen bonding and S…O interaction between SO2 with the absorption system were discussed.
Ultrasound elastography of the thyroid: principles and current status

Ultrasound (US) elastography has been introduced as a non-invasive technique for evaluating thyroid diseases. This paper presents a detailed description of the technical principles, peculiarities, and limitations of US elastography techniques, including strain elastography and shear-wave elastography. This review was conducted from a clinical perspective, and aimed to assess the usefulness of US elastography for thyroid diseases in specific clinical scenarios. Although its main focus is on thyroid nodules, the applications of US elastography for other thyroid diseases, such as diffuse thyroid diseases and thyroiditis, are also presented. Furthermore, unresolved questions and directions for future research are also discussed.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic value of interleukin 21(IL-21) and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) in tuberculous pleural effusions (TPEs) and malignant pleural effusions (MPEs). Pleural effusion samples from 103 patients were classified on the basis of diagnosis as TPE (n=51) and MPE (n=52). The concentration of IL-21 was determined by ELISA. Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), adenosine dehydrogenase (ADA) and CEA levels were also determined in all patients. A significant difference was observed in the levels of ADA and CEA (P<0.01), but not in the levels of LDH (P>0.05) between TPE and MPE. The concentration of IL-21 in MPE was significantly higher compared to TPE (P<0.01). With a threshold value of 4.32 pg/ml, IL-21 had a sensitivity of 76.9% (40/52) and a specificity of 80.4% (41/51). Combined detection of IL-21 and CEA had a sensitivity of 69.2% (36/52) and a specificity of 92.2% (47/51). These two markers can contribute to the differential diagnosis of MPEs.
