        Synthesis and Characterization of Silicon/Reduced Graphene Oxide Composites as Anodes for Lithium Secondary Batteries

        <P>Silicon (Si) is one of the most attractive anode materials for lithium secondary batteries because of its large theoretical capacity, high safety, low cost and environmental benignity. However, Si-based anode material needs to overcome the structural change of the solid-electrolyte interphase due to the large volume change during cycling. To resolve these problems of composites by exploiting the superior conductivity, large specific surface area and flexibility of graphene, we have synthesized reduced graphene oxide (rGO)/Si composite electrode via a simple dip-coating method. Nickel foam is used as a current collector and template for the electrode fabrication. At 0.03 wt%, Si concentration, the rGO/Si composite anode presented the excellent cycle performance with large reversible capacity (778 mAh g(-1) after 100 cycles). The characteristics of the rGO/Si composites were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The improved anode performance of the rGO/Si composite anode is ascribed to the rGO serving as a buffer layer, thereby preventing the volume expansion of Si nanoparticles, and provide facile electron pathways.</P>

        An economic evaluation of intensive hypertension control in CKD patients: a cost-effectiveness study

        Studies have suggested that intensive hypertension control in patients with a high risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) is both effective and economically feasible. The purpose of this study is to conduct an economic evaluation of intensive hypertension control targeting chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients using the representative data in Korea.We used a Markov decision model to compare both cost and effectiveness of intensive hypertension control versus standard hypertension control in hypertensive CKD patients. Model parameters were estimated with the data from the National Health Insurance Service (NHIS)-National Sample Cohort, as well as latest literature. One-way sensitivity analysis was conducted to test the effect of variation in key parameters on the model outcome.For CKD patients with hypertension, intensive hypertension control would cost more but increase utilities, compared to standard hypertension control. The incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) for intensive hypertension control in CKD patients was projected at 18,126 USDs per quality-adjusted life year (QALY) compared to standard hypertension control. The results of sensitivity analysis suggest that the results are overall robust.This study finds that intensive hypertension control in CKD patients in Korea is economically sound. This information is expected to be useful for clinicians in managing hypertension of CKD patients and policymakers when making decisions.

        The Socioeconomic Burden of Acquired Brain Injury among the Korean Patients over 20 Years of Age in 2015–2017: a Prevalence-Based Approach

        Acquired brain injury (ABI) is a leading cause of serious long-term disability resulting in substantial economic costs for post-ABI care. This study was conducted to estimate the socioeconomic burden of persons with ABI in Korea. We used a prevalence-based approach and societal perspective to estimate the direct medical, non-medical costs and indirect costs of ABI, including stroke, traumatic brain injury (TBI), and non-traumatic ABI (anoxia, brain tumor, encephalitis, meningitis, hydrocephalus, and other brain disorders) from 2015 to 2017. The study population included patients with ABI over 20 years of age and analyzed according to insurance types encompassing National Health Insurance and automobile insurance. The socioeconomic burden of ABI was 4.67, 5.18, and 5.73 trillion KRW (approximately 4,162, 4,612, and 5,106 million USD) from 2015 to 2017 and around 0.3% of Korea's GDP annually. Estimating by disease, the socioeconomic cost was 72.4% for stroke, 18.6% for TBI, and 9.0% for non-traumatic ABI. Calculated by cost component, medical costs and non-medical costs showed a slight increase every year. Through this study, establishment of rehabilitation systems maximizing the health and quality of life for injured persons remain the key public health strategy for ABI to reduce socioeconomic burden and financial policies to support patients should be needed

        두 마리 개에서의 flurbiprofen 중독 2례

        Two dogs were presented with melena, vomiting and depression after accidental swallowing of candy form of Strepsils (flurbiprofen), which is one of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs used in human medicine for controlling a sore throat. These dogs had common signs of anemia induced by gastrointestinal ulceration and hemorrhage with azotemia and leukocytosis. The dogs were treated with blood transfusion, fluid therapy, proton-pump inhibitor,antiemetics, mucus protectant and antibiotic. Although most of clinical signs of two dogs were resolved, azotemic problem with evidence of renal injury have remained.

        토우슬과 회우슬의 에탄올 추출물의 성분 및 생리활성 비교

        본 연구에서는 우슬을 이용한 고부가가치 식품개발 연구의 일환으로, 우슬의 기원식물별 성분과 생리활성의 차이를 확인하기 위해 국내산 토우슬과 중국산 회우슬의 ethanol 추출물 및 이의 순차적 유기용매 분획물을 조제하여 각각의 유용성분을 분석하고, 이들의 in-vitro 항균활성, 항산화 및 항당뇨 활성을 비교하였다. 국내 대한약전에서 토우슬 및 회우슬 2종 모두를 우슬로 규정하고 있으며, 구분없이 사용되고 있는 실정이나, 분석 결과 토우슬은 회우슬물보다 지용성 물질을 많이 포함하며, 회우슬의 경우 상대적으로 수용성 당류를 많이 포함하고 있었다. 또한 토우슬 및 회우슬 모두 다양한 종류의 폴리페놀들을 함유하고 있으나, 회우슬이 토우슬보다 상대적으로 많은 총플라보노이드 및 총폴리페놀 함량을 나타내었다. 항균활성 및 α-glucosidase 활성 평가 결과 토우슬의 분획물이 회우슬의 분획물보다 활성이 우수하였으며, 항산화능(DPPH 음이온 소거능, ABTS 양이온 소거능, nitrite 소거능 및 환원력)의 경우 토우슬보다 회우슬이 더욱 우수함을 확인하였다. 본 연구결과는, 국내에서 동일 약재로 사용되고 있는 토우슬과 회우슬은 추출물의 경우 성분 및 효능에서 매우 유사하나, 분획물의 경우 성분 및 활성의 차이가 나타남을 의미하며, 특히 우슬 추출물의 분획물을 이용한 기능성식품 및 천연물 신약 개발시에는 국내산 토우슬과 중국산 회우슬을 구분하여 사용하여야 함을 제시하고 있다. In the course of a study for the development of functional foods utilizing Woosul (Achyranthis radix), the components and various biological activities of Korean Woosul (AJN: Achyranthes japonica Nakai) and Chinese Woosul (ABB: Achyranthes bidentata Blume) were compared. Woosul in Korea, including AJN and ABB, are regulated and part of the Korean Pharmacopoeia. From AJN and ABB, ethanol extracts and their subsequent organic solvent fractions were prepared and their in-vitro antimicrobial, antioxidant and anti-diabetes activities were evaluated. Although AJN and ABB have no clear distinction in terms of usage in Korea, our results suggest that AJN has higher quantities of lipid-soluble components and lower amounts of water-soluble sugars than does ABB. ABB also appears to possess greater amounts of flavonoid and polyphenol substances than AJN. Analyses of biological activities showed that the fractions of AJN were more active as antibacterial agents, and possessed more pronounced α-glucosidase inhibitory activities than those of the ABB fractions. However, the antioxidant activities of the ABB fractions, as determined by DPPH anion-, ABTS cation-, nitrite-scavenging activity and reducing power, were higher than those of the AJN fractions. Our results suggest that the components and bioactivity of the extracts and subsequent fractions of AJN and ABB are different. Therefore, usage of either AJN or ABB should be carefully considered, as regards their individual properties, when the active fractions of Woosul are employed in the development of functional foods or novel plant-derived medicines.

        병원급 의료기관 의료부대사업의 경제적 파급효과

        This study is conducted to estimate economic ripple effects of subsidiary services of hospitals. Using the Input/Output Analysis, this study analyzes production inducement effect, added value inducement effect, and labor inducement effect. Also, it assesses potential economic effects of the subsidiary services of which the scope is expanded as the government`s proposed in 2014. Data regarding hospital subsidiary services and economic effects are obtained from the hospitals` financial statements on the National Tax Services and the Bank of Korea. The major results of this study are summarized as follows; subsidiary service profits of hospitals are 466 billion won and rent profits of hospitals are 152 billion won. Of these, the rate of subsidiary service profits in tertiary hospitals is about 66% of total subsidiary service profits. Producement inducement effect of subsidiary services of hospitals is higher than that of total industry, service industry and medical service industry. Added value inducement effect of subsidiary services of hospitals is higher than that of total industry, manufacturing industry, service industry and medical service industry. Job position inducement effect of subsidiary service in hospitals is higher than that of total industry, service industry and medical service industry. Also, employment inducement effect of subsidiary service in hospitals is higher than that of total industry and medical service industry. The results may suggest that subsidiary services revenue in medical institutions contribute to improving operating profits. Facing with intense market competition and pressures to control health care costs, hospitals may need to determine whether subsidiary services help boost their profitability and improve customer satisfaction.

        홍화씨 추출물이 MC3T3-E1 조골세포의 증식과 분화에 미치는 영향

        Purpose: The main aim of this study was to determine the effect of Carthamus tinctorius seed extract in the proliferation and differentiation of MC3T3-E1 osteoblastic cell line. Materials and Methods: To determine the characteristic alteration of MC3T3-E1 cells by C. tinctorius, it was examined by cell culture, MTT assay, Von Kossa staining, reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction analysis in MC3T3-E1 cells. Results: The treatment of C. tinctorius did not significantly affect the cell proliferation in MC3T3-E1 cells. C. tinctorius significantly accelerated the mineralization as compared with the control culture in the differentiation of MC3T3-E1 cells. C. tinctorius significantly increased the expression of alkaline phosphatase mRNA as compared with the control in the differentiation of MC3T3-E1 cells. C. tinctorius significantly accelerated the decrease of osteonectin mRNA expression as compared with the control in a time-dependent manner in the differentiation of MC3T3-E1 cells. Carthamus tinctorius significantly increased the expression of osteocalcin mRNA as compared with the control in the differentiation of MC3T3-E1 cells. Conclusion: These results suggest that the C. tinctorius facilitate the osteoblast differentiation and mineralization in the differentiation of MC3T3-E1 osteoblastic cells, and therefore, that it may have potential properties for development and its clinical application of bone regeneration materials.
