        Phosphorus Removal in Pilot Plant Using Biofilm Filter Process from Farm Wastewater

        Various environmental conditions affecting total phosphorus removal from farm wastewater in a biofilm filter process were investigated using loess balls and Chromobacterium LEE-38 at a pilot plant. When Chromobacterium LEE-38 was used, the removal efficiency of total phosphorous was approximately 10- or 5-fold higher than that of Acinetobacter CHA-2-14 or Acinetobacter CHA-4-5, respectively. When a loess ball of 11~14 mm manufactured at a 960°C calcining temperature was used, the removal efficiency of total phosphorous was 90.0%. When 70% of the volume fraction was used, the maximum efficiency of total phosphorus removal was 93.1%. Notably, when the initial pH was in the range of 6.0 to 8.0, the maximum removal efficiency of total phosphorus was obtained after 30 days. When the operating temperature was in the range of 30 to 55°C, the maximum removal efficiencies of total phosphorus, 95.6 to 94.6%, were obtained. On the other hand, at operating temperatures below 20°C or above 40°C, the removal efficiency of total phosphorous decreased. Among the various processes, biofilm filter process A gave the highest removal efficiency of 96.4%. Pilot tests of total phosphorus removal using farm wastewater from the biofilm filter process A were carried out for 60 days under optimal conditions. When Acinetobacter sp. Lee-11 was used, the average removal efficiency in the p-adsorption area was only 32.5%, and the removal efficiencies of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biological oxygen demand (BOD) were 56.7 and 62.5%, respectively. On the other hand, when Chromobacterium LEE-38 was used, the average removal efficiency was 95.1%, and the removal efficiencies of COD and BOD were 91.3 and 93.2%, respectively.

        단미음료제(單味飮料劑)를 통한 소갈(消渴)의 치료(治療)에 관한 고찰(考察)

        In Oriental medicine, So-gal(消渴) is similar to Diabetes Mellitus in the symptoms. In the medical treatment of So-gal(消渴), one kind of herb medicine is recorded in ancent medicine literatures. That herb medicine is a juice of vegetable drunken with herb medicine of So-gal(消渴). Milk(牛乳汁), human milk(人乳汁), gam-ja-jup(甘蔗汁), wo-jul-jup(藕節汁), li-jup(梨汁), sang-gang-jup(生薑汁) etc. is that. In that juices, Milk(牛乳汁), human milk(人乳汁), gam-ja-jup(甘蔗汁), wo-jul-jup(藕節汁), li-jup(梨汁) have sweety tastes, and cold nature. So they cure So-gal(消渴) come from dry and hot nature. Sang-gang-jup(生薑汁) is different with others in the taste and nature that sweety and hot taste and hot nature. Sang-gang-jup(生薑汁) cure the sequela of So-gal(消渴) by his hot nature. We think In Diabetes Mellitus, that juice can be used by drink for the treatment of diet because of simility between So-gal(消渴) and DM.

        Effect of Nicotinic Acid on Fresh Semen Characteristics in Miniature Pigs

        Objective of this study was to investigate the effect of nicotinic acid (NA) on the characteristics in fresh semen of miniature pig. We evaluated viability, acrosome reaction and mitochondrial integrity of sperm on 0, 3, 7 and 10 days during storage period with nicotinic acid. As results, the survival rate of sperm in 15 mM NA (day 3, 87.8 ± 1.2%; day 5, 84.0 ± 2.7%; day 7, 82.2 ± 0.9%) and 30 mM NA (day 3, 87.7 ± 0.3%; day 5, 84.4 ± 2.5%; day 7, 82.3 ± 0.7%) groups were higher than control and 5 mM NA groups in 3, 7 and 10 days of semen storage. The NA-treated sperm on 10 day was used day for observing acrosome integrity. The survival sperm with acrosome reaction was higher in 30 mM NA group (day 3, 2.7 ± 0.2%; day 5, 3.3 ± 0.6%; day 7, 11.4 ± 0.3%) than in the control, significantly (P<0.05). Moreover, the live sperm with mitochondrial integrity was higher in whole treatment groups of NA than control group, significantly (P<0.05). Specially, most mitochondrial integrity on 10 day of semen storage was significantly higher in 30 mM NA group (90.2 ± 1.6%) than other treatment groups (control, 81.8 ± 3.1%; 5 mM NA, 83.4 ± 3.0%; 15 mM NA, 89.1 ± 0.7%, P<0.05). In conclusion, supplement of NA in liquid semen of miniature pig can improve and maintain semen quality, such as viability, acrosome reaction, and mitochondria integrity.

        Irritable Bowel Syndrome Is More Common in Women Regardless of the Menstrual Phase: A Rome II-based Survey

        <P>Functional gastrointestinal disorders are more common in women in relation to the fluctuations of female sex hormones. We tried to know the gender-related differences in the prevalence of irritable bowel syndrome and gastrointestinal symptoms according to the menstrual phase. A total of 253 women before menopause and 252 men below age 50 were examined by a gastroenterologist after completing the questionnaire. Blood tests, endoscopic procedures, and imaging studies were done, if needed. Women were subclassified into three groups according to their menst- ruation period; menstrual phase, proliferative phase, and secretory phase. Finally, 179 men and 193 women were analyzed. Irritable bowel syndrome was more frequently noticed in women than in men (<I>p</I>=0.01). The diarrhea-dominant type was more common in men, while constipation-dominant or alternating types were more common in women (<I>p</I><0.001). Of 193 women, there was no significant difference in their gastrointestinal symptoms according to their menstrual phase. Regardless of the menstrual phase, gastrointestinal symptoms are more frequent in women. Physicians should consider different symptomatic manifestations between men and women should be considered when evaluating functional gastrointestinal disorders.</P>

      • Association between low fat mass and non-tuberculous mycobacteria infection in patients with bronchiectasis

        Introduction: Presence of pulmonary non-tuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) infections is associated with underlying lung disease such as bronchiectasis and emphysema. Although several studies have observed the relationship between morphological susceptibility and development of NTM lung disease, the body composition of the patients with NTM and concurrent bronchiectasis is completely unknown. Methods: We compared bronchiectasis patients with and without pulmonary NTM. NTM infection was confirmed by using the American Thoracic Society/ Infectious Disease Society of America criteria. Standard radiological criteria were used to define bronchiectasis in chest CT scan. Body morphotype and composition was measured at entry to the cohort using bioelectrical impedance analysis. Results: Two hundred forty five patients with bronchiectasis were enrolled in the study. One hundred six subjects (48%) had NTM infection. Those patients who had NTM infection tended to have a significantly lower weight, body mass index, body fat and abdominal fat ratio. Multivariate regression analysis showed that both female sex and lower fat mass index were independent risk factors for NTM infection after adjusting age, body mass index, muscle mass and body protein. Conclusion: Our results suggest that lower fat mass may contribute to host susceptibility to NTM lung disease.

        A Disintegrin and Metalloproteinase 33 Protein in Patients with Asthma : Relevance to Airflow Limitation

        <P>BACKGROUND: ADAM33 has been identified as a novel asthma susceptibility gene in genomewide screening and association studies. High-level expression in smooth muscles and fibroblasts suggests that ADAM33 plays a role in airway remodeling in patients with asthma. METHODS: The ADAM33 protein was identified in the bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluids of patients with asthma and normal control subjects using Western blotting antibody against the catalytic domain. ADAM33 expression was analyzed using immunohistochemical staining of mucosal biopsy specimens. The levels of ADAM33 protein in the BAL fluids were measured by dot blotting, and were correlated with the FEV1 values of the patients with asthma. RESULTS: Western blot analysis revealed the presence of the ADAM33 protein, with a molecular mass of approximately 55 kD in the BAL fluids. ADAM33 was expressed in the smooth muscles and basement membranes of almost all the patients with asthma, but was absent in the normal control subjects. The ADAM33 levels were increased significantly in patients with moderate to severe asthma and in patients with mild asthma, as compared with normal control subjects (p = 0.001 and p = 0.016, respectively). The ADAM33 protein levels correlated inversely with the FEV(1)% predicted in the patients with asthma (r = -0.486, p = 0.018). CONCLUSIONS: ADAM33 is associated with asthma development, and the levels of ADAM protein are related to asthma severity.</P>

        In Vivo radioprotective effect of Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer and identification of active ginsenosides

        <P>This study evaluated the effect of water extracts of Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer (PG), panaxadiol (PD), panaxatriol (PT), ginsenoside Rb<SUB>1</SUB>, Rb<SUB>2</SUB>, Rc, Rd, Re and Rg<SUB>1</SUB> on jejunal crypt survival, endogenous spleen colony formation and apoptosis in jejunal crypt cells in gamma-irradiated mice. Jejunal crypts were protected by pretreatment with PG, Rc and Rd. Administration of PG, PD, Rd and Re prior to irradiation resulted in an increase in the formation of endogenous spleen colonies. The frequency of radiation-induced apoptosis in intestinal crypt cells was also reduced by pretreatment with PG, PD, Rb<SUB>2</SUB>, Rc, Rd, Re and Rg<SUB>1</SUB>. In experiments on the effects of the individual ginsenosides, the rank order of activity was Rc > Rd > Rg<SUB>1</SUB> > Rb<SUB>2</SUB> > Re > Rb<SUB>1</SUB> on intestinal crypt survival assay, Re > Rb<SUB>2</SUB> > Rd > Rg<SUB>1</SUB> > Rb<SUB>1</SUB> > Rc on the spleen colony formation assay, and Rg<SUB>1</SUB> > Re > Rd > Rc > Rb<SUB>2</SUB> > Rb<SUB>1</SUB> on inhibiting the death of cells caused by apoptosis. The results indicated that Rc, Rd and Re may have a major radioprotective effect in mice irradiated with high and low doses of radiation.
