        Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease(ADPKD) is one of most common hereditary disorder. It is potentially fatal and the major mobilities are hypertension and renal failure. To elucidate clinical characteristics and outcomes of ADPKD, 67 ADPKD patients were analyzed retrospectively. The male to female ratio was 48 years for males and 42 years for females. The factors leading to the dignosis of ADPKD were flank or abdominal pain (46%), palpable abdominal mass (24%), incidental findings (18%), gross hematuria and headache. Urinalysis result showed hematuria (31%), proteinuria (19%), pyuria (18%). Among renal complications hypertension (67%) was the most common. Other complications were urolithiasis (16%) upper urinary tract infection (9%), cyst infection (7%). Azotemia was observed in 24% of cases. Echocardiography showed left ventricular hypertrophy in 24% and valvular regurgitation in 18% of cases, but there was no mital valve prolapse. Cerebrovascular events occurred in 6 cases (2 cases of intervertebral hemorrhage and 4 cases of cerebral infarction). Hipatic cyst were observed in 64% of cases. Eighteen cases culminated in end stage renal failure (ESRF) at an of 47. According to this study, the most common complications of ADPKD was hypertension (67%), ESRF (27%), and cerebrovascular event (9%). Hypertension was more frequently observed in increased creatinine group than normal.

        Heat stroke is a life-threatening illness characterized by an elevated core body temperature that rises above 40% and central nervous system dysfunctions that results in delirium, convulsions, or coma. Heat stroke is subdivided into two forms, classic and exertional. Since strenuous exercise is one of the major exacerbating and precipitating factors, the incidence of exertional heat stroke is high among young adult, especially military personnel undergoing military training. Exertional heat stroke commonly causes rhabdomyolysis, lactic acidosis, acute renal failure, shock and pulmonary edema. We report a case of heat stroke with rhabdomyolysis, acute renal failure, disseminated intravascular coagulopathy(DIC) after strenuous exercise. A 18 year old man was admitted to the hospital because of loss of consciousness. He was a wrestler and he had tried to lose 6kg in weight by jogging and strenuous exercise on that summer day with hot temperature. The development of this illness was favoured by much clothes inappropriate for that environmental condition with a purpose to enhance sweating, and by restricted intake of water and food. On admission, the blood pressure was 80/50mmHg, and body temperature was 39.4℃ with stuporous mentality. Laboratory finding were as follows : in complete blood cell count, hemoglobin was 16.7g/dL and platelet count was 158,000/ mm³. In blood chemistry, AST 1061U/L, ALT 201U/L, BUN 30mg/dL, Cr 2.2mg/dL, LDH 941IU/L, CK 696IU/L were resulted. In arterial blood gas analysis, pH 7.39, pCO₂ 30mmHg pO₂ 86mmHg, HCO₃ 18.4mEq/L, O₂ saturation 96.7% were resulted. In urinalysis, specific gravity 1.025, protein 3+, erythrocyte 2+ were resulted. In brain imaging study, brain CT finding was normal. After appropriate treatments with rapid cooling, hydration and supportive care, he improved with alert mental status. On 2nd hospital day, in laboratory result, thrombocytopenia and coagulopathy were appeared and renal insufficiency was aggravated. So he was treated with platelet concentrate and fresh frosen plasma for DIC, and enough hydration for appropriate urine volume preservation. After all, On 22nd hospital day, he fully recovered and discharged. Nowadays, with followed for some duration, he is wellbeing with no complications.

        大邱地域 地殼 γ-線의 照射線量率 測定

        본 연구는 대구지역의 지각 r-선에 의한 조사선량율을 측정하고 그에 따른 성분별 공간선량율 및 지역적 분포 등의 환경방사선 특성을 조사하였다. r-선 스펙트럼의 측정에는 4"ø ×4"Nal(Tl) 계측기와 휴대용 다중파고분석장치를 이용하여 이 지역내의 28개 지점에서 in-situ spectrometry를 수행하였으며, 측정된 스펙트럼으로부터 조사선량율을 환산하여 지각 r-선의 총선량율과 일반적으로 자연방사능의 주종이 되는 ?K, ?U계열 및 ?Th계열의 성분별 조사선량율을 구하였다. 조사결과 대구지역의 지각 r-선에 의한 평군조사선량율은 9.4 μR/h였으며 지점별 분포는 7.6∼11.0 μR/h범위로 다소 차이를 보였다. 측정시에 수반되는 기후나 우주선 등에 따른 일변화폭을 고려한다면 지점간의 차이는 주로 표토층의 자연방사성핵종인 ?K, ?U계열 및 ?Th계열의 핵종에 기인함을 알 수 있었으며, 성분별 선량율은 ?K2.9∼4.6 μR/h, ?U계열1.2∼3.1 μR/h, ?Th계열2.5∼5.0 μR/h의 분포를 나타냈다. This study concerns about the measurement and the investigation of environmental radiation characteristics which the components and the distribution of exposure rates by terrestrial r-rays in Taegu area. A 4"ø ×4"Nal(Tl) scintillation detector with a multichannel analyzer was used in the measurement of r-rays as a part of in-situ spectrometry at twenty eight different locations in this area. The conversion into the exposure rate from the measured r-rays spectrum has been carried out leading to a net exposure rate and component ones by ?K, ?U series and ?Th series products which are known by the major parts in the terrestrial r-rays generally. As a result, the average exposure rate by the terrestrial r-rays in Taegu area is 9.4 μR/h and the distribution of individual exposure rates shows more or less differences between these locations even after the consideration of diurnal and rearly variations which are always involved in these measurements. The component parts of exposure rates are distributed ?k2.92.9∼4.6 μR/h, ?U series1.2∼3.1 μR/h and ?Th series 2.5∼5.0 μR/h over the measured locations.

        The purpose of this research was to measure and evaluate relative strength of left and right triceps surae muscle of excellent jumpers and sprinters using Cybex-Ⅱ System. The subjects of this research were 5 men and women of 100-m sprinter, 5 men and women of 400-m sprinter, 5 men and women of high jumper, 5 men and women of triple jumper, and 5 men and women of long distanceer, respectively. The method of the experiment was exercised centering around peantar flexion and dorsiflexion of triceps surae muscle using Cybex-Ⅱ System. the procedures of the experiment were as follows: After falling on one's face in an upright position on the upper-body exercise and testion table, the parts of gluteus maximus and femur(thigh bone) were fastened with fixed belt. After sticking and fastenning available foot with fixed belt to the sole of a foot on a springboard equipped with the anklebone and dynamoneter, the light exercise was tried without discomforts in exerting strength. The guage was fixed at 0˚ the ankle joint so that the strength can be produced correctly, torque guage and cybex data reduction computer were controlled. After setting at 30˚/sec, the strength was exerted maximally. This velocity was the velocity that can measure maximal strength of triceps surae muscle centering around the ankle joint. After exerting the strength of 3 to 5 times, the best peak torque of those was selected and produced.

        Sequence Analysis of iap Gene PCR Products using Listeria monocytogenes Serotypes

        The polymerase chin reaction (PCR) amplification technique was used for comparison of Listeria monocytogenes serotypes. PCR primers for the fragment of invasion-associated protein (jap) gene were highly specific for all the serotypes of L. monocytogenes. Other Listeria spp., such as Listeria ivanovii and Listeria innocua were not produced the PCR fragments by above primer set. The nucleotide sequence of PCR products showed high homologies in comparison of all the isolated serotypes except unknown type II-2. The deduced amino acid sequences of the PCR products also showed similar to one another. The various region of the PCR products, called a Thr-Asn repeat region was presented. All of siolated L. monocytogenes serotypes possessed 16 to 20 Thr-Asn repeats.

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Wearable displays are considered as a bilateral communication tool in the hyperconnected era. Although several electronic clothing display was demonstrated, high power consumption issue still remained. Here, we present wireless powered wearable μLEDs (WμLEDs) with excellent stability. A custom-designed wireless power supply system operated a 30 × 30 WμLED array on a fabric. The WμLED stability was intensively investigated under bending, stretching, 85 °C/85% relative humidity and artificial sunlight conditions, showing the suitability of WμLED outdoor usage.       • Regulatory Mechanisms Involved in Proteolysis of Rice Leaves during Senescence

        NaCl and KCl enhanced the degradation of chlorophylls and proteins in detached rice (Oryze sativa) leaves in a concentration-dependent manner. Ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase(Rubisco) accounted for 73 to 80% of the protein lost by day 4 in the light. NaCl at 50mM increased proteolysis by 21% over the control in 4 days, but the addition of cycloheximide reduced the increase to about one-half. Cycloheximide alone had no effect on proteolytic activity during this period. Leaf segments taken from 10-day-old seedlings contained the highest proteolytic activity. Both NaCl and KCl increased the activity of Rubisco-degrading endoproteinases, but decreased the activity of hemoglobin-and Rubisco-degeading exoproteinases. Efflux of amono acids from senescing leaf segments into the incubation media increased 7- and 12- fold in the presence of KCl and NaCl, respectively. The effect of gibberellic acid(GA₃) and abscisic acid(ABA) on KCl-enhanced proteolysis was also studied. When treated singly, GA₃affected leaf proteolysis little, while ABA increased proteolysis, the rate of amino acid efflux, and Rubisco-degrading endo-proteinase activity. An additive increase in all three parameters mentioned above was observed when leaves were treated with ABA and KCl. No such an additive effect was found when GA₃was treated with KCl. Both GA₃and ABA helped to alleviate the KCl-suppressed activity of Rubisco-degrading exproteinases. The additive increase in proteolysis of rice leaves in the presence of both ABA and KCl could thus be ascribed to a further increase in the efflux of protein hydrolyzates and Rubisco-degrading endoproteinase activity. It is concluded that, in addition to the induction of new proteinase synthesis, the increased efflux of protein hydrolyzates may play a significant role in increasing proteolysis of salt-treated leaves.

      • Estimation of the healthy upper limits for serum alanine aminotransferase in Asian populations with normal liver histology

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>A recent study in young Italian subjects suggested that the healthy thresholds for serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels should be adjusted to 30 IU/L for men and 19 IU/L for women when assessing risk factors for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Our aim was to assess serum ALT concentrations in healthy Korean individuals and to determine the factors affecting ALT levels in these populations. We included 1,105 potential liver donors (643 men and 462 women) with biopsy‐proven normal livers. Median ages were 25 years in men and 30 years in women, with a median body mass index (BMI) of 22.3 kg/m<SUP>2</SUP> in men and 21.4 kg/m<SUP>2</SUP> in women. The calculated thresholds for ALT values in these subjects were 35 IU/L for men and 26 IU/L for women. Age and BMI were independently correlated with ALT levels in both sexes, whereas serum total cholesterol concentration was significant only in men and blood glucose level only in women (<I>P</I> < 0.05). When we chose a subgroup of 665 individuals (346 men and 319 women) using Prati criteria, modified by the BMI cutoff points for Asians (<23 kg/m<SUP>2</SUP>), we found that the healthy ALT values were 33 IU/L for men and 25 IU/L for women. The mean ALT concentrations for subjects within the Prati criteria were significantly lower than for those outside the criteria (16.7 versus 19.5 IU/L for men, 12.8 versus 14.9 IU/L for women; <I>P</I> < 0.001). <I>Conclusion:</I> The healthy ALT thresholds in biopsy‐proven normal Asians were clearly lower than the previously accepted thresholds, as has also been noted in Europeans.         Protective Effect of Maghemite Nanoparticles Coated with Smectite Against Ultraviolet Radiation

        <P>This study examined the optical properties of maghemite nanoparticles coated with smectite (MNS) and their protective effects against the photoaging of human skin fibroblasts irradiated with ultraviolet light. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) imaging showed that the maghemite nanoparticles and MNS had non-uniform particle sizes, but the maghemite nanoparticles with an average size of 15 nm were detected. The characteristics of the particles were determined via X-ray diffraction, field emission-scanning electron microscopy, TEM, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The absorption band at 1031 cm(-1) corresponded to the stretching vibrations of structural Si-O band groups of smectite and MNS. The onset of transmittance of the nano-maghemite against ultraviolet decreased at a wavelength of 400 nm. Pretreatment with MNS was not cytotoxic against Hs 68 cells. The secretion of interleukin-6 and tumor necrosis factor-alpha of the nanoparticles decreased by 41.83% and 29.56% at 100 mu g/mL MNS in human skin fibroblast Hs 68 cells compared to in ultraviolet-irradiated controls. These results suggest that MNS nanoparticles have photoprotective activity and may be useful against photoaging.</P>
