Plant Community Structure from the Jilmoi Wetlands to the Donghae Observatory, Baekdudaegan Mountains

        Jin-Woo Choi,Kyung-Won Kim,Jung-Hun Yeum,Won-Seok Hwang 한국환경생태학회 2015 한국환경생태학회지 Vol.29 No.2

This study aims to investigate the characteristics of the vegetation structure in the sectin stretching between the Jilmoi wetlands and the Donghae Observatory and to set the criteria for the basic data for a management plan including restoration afterwards. 12 plots(10 m×40 m, 20 m×20 m) were set up to analyse the vegetation structure. The analysis of the classification by TWINSPAN and ordination by DCA, importance percentage and property, distribution of diameter of breast height, growth increments of major woody species, species diversity and the physicochemical properties of soil were all analyzed. Vegetation classes were divided into 3 communities, which are community Ⅰ(Pinus densiflora community), community Ⅱ(Quercus mongolica community) and community Ⅲ(Quercus mongolica-Tilia amurensis community). The P. densiflora community declined when competing with Q. mongolica and Fraxinus rhynchophylla and Q. mongolica competed with T. amurensis on an understory layer in Q. mongolica community. Q. mongolica competed with T. amurensis on both canopy and understory layers in Q. mongolica-T. amurensis community. P. densiflora declined and it was assumed to succeed to F. rhynchophylla or T. amurensis through Q. mongolica based on the importance percentage and distribution of the diameter of the breast height of small and middle sized trees. The age of P. densiflora was between 47 to 51 years old and Q. mongolica was 61years old. T. amurensis was 61 years old and the growth of Q. mongolica slowed a little. As the result of Shannon's index of species diversity, community Ⅰranged from 0.9578 to 1.1862, community Ⅱranged from 0.7904 to 1.2286 and community Ⅲranged from 0.8701 to 1.0323. The contents of organic matter and cation were low compared to uncultivated mountain soil and it were analysed to be inappropriate for tree growth.

Chicken consumption and insulin resistance in non-diabetic older adults

        Kyung-Jin Yeum,Young-Sang Kim,Nam-Seok Joo 한국영양학회 2020 Journal of Nutrition and Health Vol.53 No.4

Purpose: Histidine-containing dipeptides, which are rich in chicken, have been reported to reduce the risk of metabolic abnormalities via anticarbonylation mechanism in animal models. To determine the effect of dietary histidine-containing dipeptides on metabolic risk factors in humans, the relation between chicken consumption and insulin resistance were determined in a population consuming high carbohydrate and low protein. Methods: A total of 7,183 subjects (2,929 men and 4,254 women) aged ≥ 50 years from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) were divided into three groups according to chicken consumption (rarely, monthly, and weekly), and evaluated for the metabolic risk factors using homeostasis model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and quantitative insulin sensitivity check index (QUICKI) in this cross-sectional study. The fourth and fifth (IV-1–3 & V-1) KNHANES, which had blood insulin data, were chosen for the current study. Results: The chicken consumption was significantly associated with insulin (p for trend = 0.018) and HOMA-IR (p for trend = 0.023) in men. In particular, the ‘weekly’ chicken consuming men in the lowest tertile (< 65.0%) of carbohydrate intake group had significantly lower HOMA-IR (p for trend = 0.033) and higher QUICKI (p for trend = 0.043) than the ‘rarely’ intake group. In addition, the odds ratio for abnormal HOMA-IR was 0.55 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.31–0.99) and QUICKI was 0.47 (95% CI, 0.26–0.86) for the ‘weekly’ chicken consuming group. Conclusion: The ‘weekly’ chicken consumption had a beneficial effect on insulin resistance and it may partially be due to the major bioactive components in chicken, histidinecontaining dipeptides.

Carotenoids: Functions and Recent Research Progress

Yeum, Kyung-Jin The Korean Society of Food Science and Nutrition 1996 Preventive Nutrition and Food Science Vol.1 No.2

Carotenoids are abundant int he Korean food supply. The intake of foods rich in carotenoids appears to be associated with optimal health, and a reduction in the risk of cancer, cardiovascular disease, macular degeneration and cataract formation. Specific dietary carotenoids may be responsible for these specific protective effects. Hydrocarbon carotenoids such as $\alpha$-,$\beta$-carotenes and lycopene may reduce the risk of cancer and heart disease, whereas oxygenated carotenoids, such as lutein and zeaxanthin, may be important in protection of the eye. Dietary carotenoids, such as lutein, cryptoxanthin, $\alpha$-carotene, $\beta$-carotene and lycopene can be readily obtained from the diet, Green leafy vegetables, such as spinach and broccoli, contain both oxygenated and hydrocarbon carotenoids ; yellow or orange vegetables, such as carrots, have high levels of $\alpha$-carotene and $\beta$-carotene ; and tomatoes contain high amounts of lycopene. Besides being important vitamin A sources, provitamin A carotenoids such as $\alpha$-carotene, $\beta$-carotene and cryptoxanthin, participate in the cell defense systems that are associated with radical quenching. Non-provitamin A carotenoids, such as lutein and lycopene, major carotenoids in human plasma, have also been reported to possess strong antioxidant capability. The alteration of dietary sources of carotenoids can modify their levels in the circulation and target tissues, and thus prevent or delay the onset of these chronic diseases.

김경원 ( Kyung Won Kim ),이경재 ( Kyong Jae Lee ),최진우 ( Jin Woo Choi ),염정헌 ( Jung Hun Yeum ),안인수 ( In Su Ahn ) 한국환경생태학회 2014 한국환경생태학회지 Vol.28 No.2

The purpose of this study is to suggest vegetation management method as the cultural landscape forest of Dongbaek Island which is the district monument. The study area was 20,000㎡ around the peak area in management as the nature sabbatical area. Vegetation structure type was classified with the criteria of topography, vegetation, management and the management plan was derived from the vegetation structure analysis according to the types. Vegetation structure types were Management-Camellia japonica, Non-management-Eurya japonica, Non-management-Rugged area-Eurya japonica. As the result of vegetation structure, Pinus thunbergii dominated in canopy layer and Camellia japonica and Eurya japonica dominated in Type Ⅰ and in Type Ⅱ and Ⅲ, respectively. Especially, Machilus thunbergii as the climax species in the warm temperate forest were distributed centering shrubs, and as the result of distribution of diameter of breast height, middle size of Celtis sinensis and Machilus thunbergii were distributed in type Ⅰ, Ⅱ. Machilus thunbergii were distributed in range of 4 to 44 individuals through the all types. Mean age of canopy layer was 66 year-old and sub-canopy layer was 22.9 year-old. Shanon’s species diversity was analysed from 0.5472 to 0.8646. As the vegetation management direction of Dongbaek island, managed Camellia japonica forest was suggested to maintain the regular management and non-managed Eurya japonica forest was required to remove the Eurya japonica and plant the Camellia japonica. In case of non managed Eurya japonica forest in rugged area, vegetation succession was required to laurel forest.

PGE2 Regulates Pacemaker Currents through EP2-Receptor in Cultured Interstitial Cells of Cajal from Murine Small Intestine

        Seok Choi,Kyung Won Cho,Jong-Hyun Reu,Jun-Soo Kim,Hyun Sik Mun,Myung Young Kim,Kwang Chul Park,Gwang Sik Heo,Sung Jong Chang,Cheol Ho Yeum,Pyung Jin Yoon,Jae Yeoul Jun 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 2004 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology Vol.13 No.1

The interstitial cells of Cajal (ICCs) are the pacemaker cells in gastrointestinal tract and generate electrical rhythmicity in gastrointestinal muscles. Therefore, ICC may be modulated by endogenous agents such as neurotransmitter, hormones, and prostaglandins (PGs). In the present study, we investigated the effects of prostaglandins, especially PGE2, on pacemaker currents in cultured ICCs from murine small intestine by using whole-cell patch clamp techniques. ICCs generated spontaneous slow waves under voltage-clamp conditions and showed a mean amplitude of ⁣452⁑39 pA and frequency of 18⁑2 cycles/min (n=6). Treatments of the cells with PGE2 (1μM) decreased both the frequency and amplitude of the pacemaker currents and increased the resting currents in the outward direction. PGE2 had only inhibitory effects on pacemaker currents and this inhibitory effect was dose-dependent. For characterization of specific membrane EP receptor subtypes, involved in the effects of PGE2 on pacemaker currents in ICCs, EP receptor agonists were used: Butaprost (1μM), EP2 receptor agonist, reduced the spontaneous inward current frequency and amplitude in cultured ICCs (n=5). However sulprostone (1μM), a mixed EP1 and EP3 agonist, had no effects on the frequency, amplitude and resting currents of pacemaker currents (n=5). SQ-22536 (an inhibitor of adenylate cyclase; 100μM) and ODQ (an inhibitor of guanylate cyclase; 100μM) had no effects on PGE2 actions of pacemaker currents. These observations indicate that PGE2 alter directly the pacemaker currents in ICCs, and that the PGE2 receptor subtypes involved are the EP2 receptor, independent of cyclic AMP- and GMP-dependent pathway.
