        Exposure and Exercise Training in Hypoxic Conditions as a New Obesity Therapeutic Modality: A Mini Review

        <P>Obesity is an important health problem caused by positive energy balance. Generally, low calorie dietary intake combined with regular exercise is the most common modality to lose bodily fat in obese people. Although this is the first modality of choice for obesity treatment, it needs to be applied to obese patients for at least 12 weeks or more and it does not provide consistent results because it is difficult to suppress increased appetite due to exercise. Recently, many researchers have been applying hypoxic conditions for the treatment of obesity, as many studies show that people residing in high altitudes have a lower percentage of body fat and fewer obesity-related illnesses than people living at sea level. Hypoxic therapy treatment, including hypoxic exposure or hypoxic exercise training, is recommended as a way to treat and prevent obesity by suppression of appetite, increasing basal metabolic rate and fat oxidation, and minimizing side effects. Hypoxic therapy inhibits energy intake and appetite-related hormones, and enhances various cardiovascular and metabolic function parameters. These observations indicate that hypoxic therapy is a new treatment modality for inducing fat reduction and promoting metabolic and cardiovascular health, which may be an important and necessary strategy for the treatment of obesity. As such, hypoxic therapy is now used as a general medical practice for obesity treatment in many developed countries. Therefore, hypoxic therapy could be a new, practical, and useful therapeutic modality for obesity and obesity-related comorbidities.</P>

        Examining Patterns of Polypharmacy in Bipolar Disorder: Findings from the REAP-BD, Korea

        Based on Korean data from the Research on Asian Psychotropic Prescription Pattern for Bipolar Disorder, this study tried to present prescription patterns in biopolar disorder (BD) and its associated clinical features. Based on the information obtained from the study with structured questions, the tendency of prescription pattern was studied and analyzed. Polypharmacy was predominant, including simple polypharmacy in 51.1% and complex polypharmacy in 34.2% of patients. Subjects associated with simple or complex polypharmacy were significantly younger, had higher inpatient settings, a larger portion of onset with manic episode, a shorter duration of untreated illness, a shorter duration of current episode, were more overweight, used less antidepressants and used more anxiolytics. These findings can suggest higher polypharmacy rate in more severe BD and highlight the necessity of monitoring the weight of subjects with polypharmacy.

        Evaluation of Time-Based Arc Flash Detection with Non-contact UV Sensor

        An arc fash is caused by electrical faults or mechanical non-contact such as insulation failure, short circuit, partial disconnection, and poor contact, emits high energy and strong light, so it can be detected by optical methods with relatively simple structures. The optical detection methods using the wavelength of light may malfunction depending on the surrounding environment, the sunlight and lighting. In addition, with such methods, it is difcult to measure the detection distance to the point where the arc fash occurs, measure the detection range of the detection sensor, and monitor how amounts of harmful from the arc fash. This paper aims to examine the techniques for quantitatively detecting arc fash caused by electrical faults. To this end, a system for detecting the time when an arc fash occurs and the techniques for calibrating this system were analyzed, respectively. A feld test was also conducted to detect the arc fash caused by mechanical non-contact between the pantograph of electric railway vehicles and the catenary. In the feld test, 9 number of arc fashes were detected using the percentage (%) technique for quantitative detection. The technique of detecting the time when an arc fash occurs is a new quantitative evaluation method, which is expected to be widely used to prevent negligent accidents in the electrical feld as well as being able to determine in real time whether there is a harmful arc.

        Comparison of porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2)-associated lesions produced by co-infection between two genotypes of PCV2 and two genotypes of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus

        <P>The objective of this study was to compare the virulence and pathogenicity of a combination of concurrent infections of two genotypes of porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) and two genotypes of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) in terms of PCV2 viraemia, and PCV2-associated lesions and antigens in co-infected pigs. Pigs with PCV2a (or 2b)/type 1 (or type 2) PRRSV had significantly (<I>P</I><0.05) higher mean clinical respiratory scores and lower average daily weight gain compared with pigs with PCV2a (or 2b). Co-infection induced significantly lower levels of anti-PCV2 and anti-PRRSV IgG antibodies than infection with one genotype alone, regardless of the genotype of the two viruses. Pigs with PCV2a (or 2b)/type 2 PRRSV had significantly (<I>P</I><0.05) higher levels of PCV2 viraemia, more severe PCV2-associated lesions, and more PCV2 DNA within the lesions compared with pigs with PCV2a (or 2b)/type 1 PRRSV. However, there was no significant difference in these parameters in pigs with PCV2a/type 2 PRRSV or PCV2b/type 2 PRRSV. The results of this study demonstrate significant differences in the virulence and pathogenicity of type 1 and type 2 PRRSV but no significant differences in the virulence and pathogenicity of PCV2a and PCV2b with respect to the production of PCV2-associated lesions.</P>

        모노파일용 원거리 무선 모니터링 시스템의 유효거리 평가

        구조물 안정성 평가를 위한 무선 모니터링 시스템의 경우 신뢰성을 확보할 수 있는 측정거리에 한계가 존재한다. 본 연구의 목적은 무선 모니터링 시스템에서 측정거리의 변화가 계측된 데이터의 미치는 영향을 파악하는 것이다. 이를 위해 데이터로거와 수신기 사이는 블루투스 규격을, 수신기와 화면출력장치 사이는 와이파이 규격을 이용하여 무선 모니터링 시스템을 구축하였다. 모노파일 구조물의 하중응답을 모사하기 위하여 나일론 재질로 모형 모노파일을 제작하였으며, 해머 타격장치를 이용하여 하중재하를 실시하였다. 모형 모노파일에 설치된 전기저항식 변형률계를 데이터로거에 연결하여 모니터링을 수행하였다. 데이터로거와 수신기 사이의 거리 그리고 수신기와 화면출력장치 사이의 거리를 변화시켜 거리에 따른 측정값을 비교하였다. 실험결과, 블루투스 규격과 와이파이 규격 모두 유효범위 내에서는 측정거리의 증가에 따라 데이터 수신율이 거의 일정하였으나, 유효범위를 넘어서는 데이터의 수신율이 급격히 감소하는 경향이 관찰되었다. 또한, 데이터의 수신율은 모노파일의 고유주파수 분석에도 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구에서 수행한 무선 모니터링 시스템의 유효범위 평가는 해상에 설치되는 모노파일과 같은 구조물의 안정성 평가를 위한 무선 모니터링 시스템 구성시 측정거리의 결정에 기초적 자료로 활용될 수 있음을 보여준다. Wireless monitoring system for the structural health evaluation has a limit to the reliability of measured response. The objective of this study is to evaluate an effective measurement range of the wireless monitoring system on the analyzed data. For the wireless monitoring system, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are applied to datalogger-receiver and receiver-personal computer, respectively. For the model of the monopile structure response, a laboratory-scale monopile is manufactured with Mono Cast Nylon and a lateral loading is applied by hammer impacting. Strain gauges attached on the model monopile are connected with the datalogger. The distances of datalogger-receiver and receiver-personal computer are changed for the evaluation of the measurement range. Experimental results show that the receiving rates of the response remain almost constant within limited distance, while the receiving rates dramatically decrease out of effective range. In addition, the receiving rates affect on the measured natural frequencies of the model monopile. This study suggests that the effective range evaluation of the wireless monitoring system may be used for the determination of a monitoring distance to the monopile installed in the offshore wind farm.

        The role of habitual physical activity on arterial stiffness in elderly Individuals: a systematic review and meta-analysis

        [Purpose] Physical inactivity behavior at middle age or older is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease. However, the effects of levels of habitual physical activity on arterial stiffness in elderly population remain unclear currently. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to demonstrate whether the effects of habitual physical activity could attenuate arterial stiffness in elderly individuals via a meta-analysis. [Methods] We searched the Medline and Embase databases from January 1997 through November 2017, using the medical subject headings “older population”, “physical activity” (e.g., walking, cycling, climbing, and any participation in sports), “arterial stiffness”, “pulse wave velocity”, and “cardiovascular health” published in English. Six articles (2,932 participants) were included in this meta-analysis. We investigated the effects of habitual physical activity on arterial stiffness, which was measured by the pulse wave velocity. [Results] Results confirmed heterogeneity (Q-value = 160.691, p = 0.000, I2 = 96.888) between individual studies. The effect size was calculated using random effect model. It has shown that physically active individuals have significantly lower arterial stiffness than their sedentary peers do (standardized mean difference: -1.017 ± 0.340, 95% confidence interval: -1.684 ~ -0.350, p = 0.003). [Conclusions] Findings of our systematic review and meta-analysis indicate that habitual physical activity can significantly ameliorate arterial stiffness in the elderly population.

        Terahertz rectifier exploiting electric field-induced hot-carrier effect in asymmetric nano-electrode

        <P>Rectifiers have been used to detect electromagnetic waves with very low photon energies. In these rectifying devices, different methods have been utilized, such as adjusting the bandgap and the doping profile, or utilizing the contact potential of the metal–semiconductor junction to produce current flow depending on the direction of the electric field. In this paper, it is shown that the asymmetric application of nano-electrodes to a metal–semiconductor–metal (MSM) structure can produce such rectification characteristics, and a terahertz (THz) wave detector based on the nano-MSM structure is proposed. Integrated with a receiving antenna, the fabricated device detects THz radiation up to a frequency of 1.5 THz with responsivity and noise equivalent power of 10.8 V/W and <img ALIGN='MIDDLE' ALT='$100\,{\rm{pW}}/\sqrt{{\rm{Hz}}},$' SRC='http://ej.iop.org/images/0957-4484/29/47/47LT01/nanoaae130ieqn1.gif'/> respectively, estimated at 0.3 THz. The unidirectional current flow is attributed to the thermionic emission of hot carriers accelerated by the locally enhanced THz field at the sharp end of the nano-electrode. This work not only demonstrates a new type of THz detector but also proposes a method for manipulating ultrafast charge-carrier dynamics through the field enhancement of the nano-electrode, which can be applied to ultrafast photonic and electronic devices.</P>
