Training Beam Sequence Design for Millimeter-Wave MIMO Systems: A POMDP Framework

<P>In this paper, adaptive training beam sequence design for efficient channel estimation in large millimeter-wave (mmWave) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels is considered. By exploiting the sparsity in large mmWave MIMO channels and imposing a Markovian random walk assumption on the movement of the receiver and reflection clusters, the adaptive training beam sequence design and channel estimation problem is formulated as a partially observable Markov decision process (POMDP) problem that finds non-zero bins in a two-dimensional grid. Under the proposed POMDP framework, optimal and suboptimal adaptive training beam sequence design policies are derived. Furthermore, a very fast suboptimal greedy algorithm is developed based on a newly proposed reduced sufficient statistic to make the computational complexity of the proposed algorithm low to a level for practical implementation. Numerical results are provided to evaluate the performance of the proposed training beam design method. Numerical results show that the proposed training beam sequence design algorithms yield good performance.</P>

<P>In this paper, the problem of transmit beam design and user scheduling is investigated for multiuser (MU) multiple-input single-output (MISO) nonorthogonal multiple access (NOMA) downlink. First, Pareto-optimal beam design is solved for two-user MISO broadcast channels (BCs) with successive interference cancelation (SIC), and certain properties of Pareto-optimal beam vectors are obtained. Based on this result, a beam design and user scheduling method is proposed for MU-MISO NOMA. In the proposed method, simultaneously served users are grouped into multiple clusters with two users in each cluster, and a hierarchical beam structure composed of zero forcing intercluster beamforming and two-user Pareto-optimal intracluster beamforming is applied. The proposed method has the ability to control the rates of strong and weak users and hence provides great flexibility to MU-MISO NOMA operation. In addition, the problem of Pareto-optimal beam design for general <TEX>$M$</TEX> -user MISO BCs with SIC is solved.</P>
Extramedullary Plasmacytoma on Unilateral Upper Eyelid in a Shih-Tzu Dog

A 9-year-old spayed female Shih-Tzu was presented with a mass on the upper eyelid of the right eye (OD). The eyelid mass continued to enlarge along the eyelid margin and the eyelid skin. Throughout the follow-up examinations, the mass did not affect the palpebral conjunctiva OD. Until 9 months since the mass was first identified, the dog did not show any clinical signs related to the mass. However, after 11 months, the owner complained of the dog’s discomfort on OD and decided on surgical excision of the mass. There were no abnormalities in the complete blood count and serum chemistry profiles. The pentagonal resection was performed to completely remove the mass in the eyelid. There were no suspicious findings of metastasis on whole-body computed tomography scan immediately before the surgery. On histopathology and immunohistochemistry for multiple myeloma oncogene-1, the eyelid mass was diagnosed as extramedullary plasmacytoma (EMP). Surgical margin of the mass was clearly cut. No recurrence was observed during the 5-month follow-up. EMPs on the eyelid have rarely been reported in dogs. Although EMP is a benign tumor, the mass showed invasive growth and grew toward the skin rather than the palpebral conjunctiva. No recurrence occurred when surgically removed with clean margins.

This study was aimed to evaluate the prophylactic anti-glaucoma effect of topical 5% betaxolol (BTX) and 2% dorzolamide (DRZ) on the second eye in dogs with unilateral primary angle closure glaucoma (PACG). Medical records of 60 dogs with unilateral PACG who received prophylactic anti-glaucoma eyedrops in the second eye, from 2016 to 2021, were reviewed. The prophylactic effects of BTX were maintained on 28/60 (46.7%) eyes until last visit and BTX failure was observed on median 510 (range, 53-1,927) days in 32/60 (53.3%) eyes. After DRZ instillation in BTX failure eyes, the prophylactic effects were extended at median 610 (range, 157-2,270) days in 21/32 (65.6%) eyes. DRZ failure eyes (17/21, 81.0%) eyes required chemical ablation or surgical intervention due to uncontrolled intraocular pressure. The duration of prophylactic effects was decreased with aging (R2 = 0.334, p = 0.006). The predominant breeds were Shih-Tzu (41.9%) and American Cocker Spaniel (30.6%) with no significant differences in survival curves (p = 0.210). The average prophylactic effects of BTX persisted more than 1.5 year and could be selected the first prophylactic eye drop in unilateral PACG. Also, early surgical intervention should be considered in prophylactic medications failure cases.
자연스러운 증강현실 인터페이스를 위한 효과적인 손 검출

증강현실에서 자연스럽고 인간 친화적인 인터페이스로는 비전 기반의 손동작을 이용한 인터페이스가 가장 각광받고 있다. 그러나 복잡한 배경에서 손을 찾고 손동작을 인식하는 것은 여전히 어려운 문제로 남아 있다. 특히, 배경에 살색을 가진 물체가 많이 있다면 이 문제는 더욱 해결하기 어려워진다. 이 논문은 손 영역을 정확하게 검출 하는 방법에 초점이 맞춰져 있으며, 효과적인 방법을 제안한다. 제안하는 방법은 기본적으로 손과 팔을 포함하는 영역이 다른 피부색 영역과 다른 밝기를 가지고 있다고 가정한다. 구체적으로 제안하는 방법은 밝기 차이를 이용하여 피부색 영역으로부터 손과 팔을 포함하는 영역을 검출한다. 본 논문에서는 밝기 차이를 구분하는 방법으로 엗지(edge) 영상을 이용한다. 그 다음 손과 팔의 기하학적 특징을 이용하여 손목을 찾고 손을 포함하는 사각형 영역을 검출한다. 마지막으로 사각형 영역으로부터 손을 찾아낸다. 손을 찾는 방법 또한 약간 다르지만 비슷한 밝기 기반의 추출 방법을 사용한다. 우리는 간단한 손동작 기반의 증강현실 인터페이스를 구현함으로써 제안한 방법의 효용성을 검증한다.
가상 페트와의 자연스러운 상호작용을 위한 손바닥 포즈 계산 및 손가락 움직임 추적

본 논문은 손을 이용하여 가상 객체와 상호작용이 가능한 모바일 증강현실 기술을 소개한다. 제안된 방법은 마커나 센서없이 손바닥의 특징점만을 이용하여 손바닥 포즈(위치와 방향)를 계산하고, 손바닥 위에 가상 객체를 생성한다. 또한, 손가락 움직임을 추적하여 가상 객체와 자연스러운 상호작용을 가능하게 한다. 본 논문에서는 Ultra-Mobile PC (UMPC)를 이용하여 제안된 방법을 구현하고, 그 유용성을 검증한다.
Filter-and-Forward Transparent Relay Design for OFDM Systems

<P>In this paper, the filter-and-forward (FF) relay design for orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) transmission systems is considered for improving system performance over simple amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying. Unlike conventional OFDM relays performing OFDM demodulation and remodulation, to reduce processing complexity, the proposed FF relay directly filters the incoming signal in the time domain with a finite impulse response (FIR) and forwards the filtered signal to the destination. Three design criteria are considered for optimizing the relay filter. The first criterion is the minimization of the relay transmit power subject to per-subcarrier signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) constraints, the second criterion is the maximization of the worst subcarrier channel SNR subject to source and relay transmit power constraints, and the third criterion is the maximization of the data rate subject to source and relay transmit power constraints. It is shown that the first problem reduces to a semi-definite programming (SDP) problem by semi-definite relaxation (SDR), and the solution to the relaxed SDP problem has rank one under a mild condition. For the latter two problems, the problem of joint source power allocation and relay filter design is considered, and an efficient algorithm is proposed for each problem based on alternating optimization and the projected gradient method (PGM). Numerical results show that the proposed FF relay significantly outperforms simple AF relays with an insignificant increase in complexity. Thus, the proposed FF relay provides a practical alternative to the AF relaying scheme for OFDM transmission.</P>
