<P>We observed resonance effects on the transmission of a pump beam in a chaotic microcavity in an optimal free-space optical-pumping configuration. The far-field pattern of cavity transmission was significantly modified when the pump laser was resonant with a scar mode. From the difference between the non-resonant and on-resonance transmission patterns, we obtained the efficiency of the pump coupling into the scar mode to be as high as 45%, which is consistent with the recent excitation spectroscopy results of Yang et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 243601 (2010)].</P>

<P>Pump-induced dynamical tunneling has been observed in free-space resonant optical pumping of a deformed microcavity by employing excitation spectroscopy. A focused-pump beam was injected into the cavity by refraction and then coupled to a high-Q cavity mode via dynamical tunneling. Pump-coupling efficiency as high as 50% and an effective coupling constant responsible for the tunneling were obtained from the observed pumping efficiency with a mode-mode coupling model.</P>

<P>The regulation of tyrosinase activity and reactive oxygen species is of great importance for the prevention of dermatological disorders in the fields of medicine and cosmetics. Herein, we report a strategy based on solid-phase peptide chemistry for the synthesis of β-lactoglobulin peptide fragment/caffeic acid (CA) conjugates (CA-Peps) with dual activities of tyrosinase inhibition and antioxidation. The purity of the prepared conjugates, CA-MHIR, CA-HIRL, and CA-HIR, significantly increased to 99%, as acetonide-protected CA was employed in solid-phase coupling reactions on Rink amide resins. The tyrosinase inhibitory activities of all CA-Pep derivatives were higher than the activity of kojic acid, and CA-MHIR exhibited the highest tyrosinase inhibition activity (IC<SUB>50</SUB> = 47.9 μM). Moreover, CA-Pep derivatives displayed significantly enhanced antioxidant activities in the peroxidation of linoleic acid as compared to the pristine peptide fragments. All CA-Pep derivatives showed no cytotoxicity against B16-F1 melanoma cells.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>

<P>To exploit interesting electronic properties of colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) in thin film devices, replacement of the original bulky ligands attached on the NC surface to short ones is essential. Here, we investigate the electronic properties of thin films of Cu2-xSe NCs treated chemically with short sulfide (S2-), thiocyanate (SCN-), and chloride (Cl-) ligands that are known to yield superior physical properties compared to the first-generation short ligand systems including amines and thioles. Specifically, the study focuses on the impact of ligand treatment on their direct/indirect bandgap and NIR-localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) in the near-IR regime as well as their electrical conductivity and thermoelectric properties. While the application of S2- solution resulted in exchange of the original oleylamine (OAm) on NC surface with S2- ligands, use of SCN- and Cl- solutions only removed the original ligands. The different ligands consistently led a red-shift of the direct and indirect bandgap. The LSPR was also red-shifted after applying solutions with SCN- and Cl- but was blue-shifted after applying solutions with S2-, which we attribute to the formation of sulfur shell on NC surface. Conductivity as high as 442 S/cm and Seebeck coefficient of 13 mu V/K could be obtained from the NC films with Cl- and SCN- ligands, respectively. We believe that the understanding on Cu2-xSe NCs will expand the materials library for electronic applications of copper chalcogenide NCs.</P>
Development of Compact Femtosecond Yb:KYW Oscillators: Simulation and Experiment

Numerical simulations and laboratory experiments are conducted for the development of a compact femtosecond diode-pumped Yb:KYW oscillator. For optimizing the oscillator as a seeding source for a regenerative amplifier, we simulated the output power as a function of the transmission of the output coupler, the incident pump power, and the amplification axis of the gain medium by using laser cavity analysis and design (LASCAD) software. Numerical and experimental results show good agreement for both N<sub>p</sub>- and N<sub>m</sub>-polarization for N<sub>g</sub>- and N<sub>p</sub>-cut crystals. The experimental results show that the Nm-polarization oscillator’s average power exceeds 1.2 W at the central wavelength of 1035 nm with a pulse duration 111 fs, which is suitable for the combined gain spectrum of a dual-crystal amplifier.
Preparation of piperazine derivatives as 5-HT_(7) receptor antagonists

Twenty-four compounds of 4-methoxy-N-[3-(4-substituted phenyl-piperazine-1-yl)propyl] benzene sulfonamides and N-[3-(4-substituted phenyl-piperazine-1-yl)propyl] naphthyl sulfonamides were prepared and evaluated as 5-HT_(7) receptor antagonists. Most of the compounds showed the IC_(50) values of 12-580 nM. Four methyl branched analogues were also obtained, but the activity for methyl branched analogues was almost same as its straight chain congeners. Among the synthesized compounds, 3c showed a good activity on 5-HT_(7) receptors and a good selectivity on 5-HT_(1a), 5-HT_(2a), 5-HT_(2c), and 5-HT_(6) receptors.

모바일 네트워크 환경에서 단말간 이루어지는 통신은 단말이 지닌 제한된 에너지로 인해 효율적인 에너지 사용이 매우 중요하다. 본 논문에서는 슈퍼피어를 기반으로 한 계층적 P2P 시스템에서 매체 접근 프로토콜의 하나인 IEEE 802.11에서 에너지의 낭비를 줄이고자 제안된 전력절감모드(PSM)를 개선하여 보다 효과적으로 에너지를 절약할 수 있는 방법을 제시한다. PSM은 Beacon Interval에 있는 데이터 전송 구간에서 모든 데이터를 전송하거나 혹은 받은 후에도 단말이 Sleep 모드로 전환되지 않기 때문에 불필요한 에너지 소모가 따르게 된다. 본 논문에서는 데이터 전송 구간에서 필요한 데이터 전송이 완료되었을 경우, 단말을 Sleep 상태로 전환하여 에너지 효율성을 강화한 전력절감 방법을 제안한다. 실험 결과 본 논문에서 제안한 방법이 기존 PSM 방법에 비해 평균 에너지 잔량의 경우 약 40%, 네트워크 유지시간(lifetime)은 약 7.7%의 성능 향상을 보여준다.
The disease burden of bronchiectasis in Korea: a national database study

Background: The prevalence and disease burden of bronchiectasis in comparison to those of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) have not been well elucidated using a nationally representative database. Methods: We compared respiratory symptoms, physical activity, quality of life, and socioeconomic status in subjects with bronchiectasis versus those with COPD or control subjects participating in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2007-2009. Participants were classified as physician- diagnosed bronchiectasis, COPD, and control (those without COPD or bronchiectasis). Results: The prevalence of bronchiectasis in subjects aged 40 years or older was 0.8%. Compared to COPD subjects, bronchiectasis subjects were more likely to be younger (median 59.0 years, p=0.001), female (47.6%, p=0.049), and never-smoker (50.1%, p=0.049) and have had history of pulmonary tuberculosis (40.5%, p < 0.001) and osteoporosis (19.1%, p < 0.001). However, as in COPD subjects, bronchiectasis subjects had low family income (p < 0.001) and the proportion of subjects working as manager/professional/ office workers (6.4%, p < 0.001) was smaller than that of control subjects. After adjusting for covariables, compared to control, bronchiectasis subjects but not COPD subjects were more likely to have respiratory symptoms (adjusted odds ratio [OR] = 7.96, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.10-30.12), limitation in physical activity (adjusted OR=9.43, 95% CI=1.06-83.79), and low family income (adjusted OR=3.61, 95% CI: 1.75-7.47). Conclusion: The prevalence of bronchiectasis in Korea was 0.8%. Respiratory symptoms, limitation in physical activity, and low family income were significantly associated with bronchiectasis.
