Abstract

Background

Regardless of improved survival rate, negative images and myths about cancer still abound. Cancer stigma may reduce patients' life opportunities resulting in social isolation, decreased level of emotional well‐being, and poor health outcomes. This study was aimed to evaluate public attitudes toward cancer and cancer patients and people's willingness to disclose cancer diagnosis in South Korea.

Methods

A cross‐sectional survey was conducted in August and September 2009. A nationally representative sample of 1011 men and women with no history of cancer was recruited. A set of 12 questions grouped into three domains (impossibility of recovery, cancer stereotypes, and discrimination) was used to assess public attitudes toward cancer.

Results

It was found 58.5% of study participants agreed that it is impossible to treat cancer regardless of highly developed medical science, 71.8% agreed that cancer patients would not be able to make contributions to society, and 23.5% agreed that they would avoid working with persons who have cancer. The proportions of people who said that that they would not disclose a cancer diagnosis to family, friends or neighbors, or coworkers were 30.2%, 47.0%, and 50.7%, respectively. Negative attitudes toward cancer were strongly associated with lower willingness to disclose a cancer diagnosis.

Conclusions

Negative attitudes, stereotypes, and discriminating attitudes toward cancer and people affected by the disease were very common in spite of clinical progress and improved survivorship.

Impact

Our findings emphasize the need for health policy and social changes to provide a more supportive environment for cancer survivors. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to measure the level of expectations regarding aging (ERA) and identify relationship between ERA and physical activity of middle aged adults. Methods: Participants were middle aged adults who resided in the community in three cities in Korea. Data were collected using questionnaires that contained items on individual characteristic, International Physical Activity Questionnaires (IPAQ), and behavior-specific cognitive factors including ERA-12. Hierarchical multiple regression was conducted to examine whether ERA would predict physical activity by controlling other factors. Results: The mean age of the participants was 51.1±6.9 years. The mean score for ERA (possible range=0 to 100) was 40.04±14.31. More than half of the participants (62.6%) were not engaged in health promoting physical activity. Gender, employment status and exercise confidence were associated with level of physical activity (F=7.14, p<.001, R²=.36). After controlling for individual factors and behavior-specific cognitive factors, ERA was independently related to physical activity (F=7.19, p<.001, R²=.38). Conclusion: The results demonstrate that individuals’ belief about aging has effects on physical activity in Korean middle aged adults. Thus, nursing interventions which focused on ERA could help enhance physical activity in middle aged adults.

Regulations regarding auto exhausts are currently being strengthened all around the world. Increases in the price of oil and natural gas, the growth of concerns about the finite nature of reserves, and increasing awareness of the environmental damage caused by burning fossil fuels have all stimulated interest in next generation cars. Unlike vehicles today, these automobiles address environmental concerns by producing less emissions and pollution, while still holding many economical benefits, like high efficiency. Major car manufacturers are focusing on the development of tile EV (Electric Vehicle). FCEV (Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle) and HEV (Hybrid Electric Vehicle). Because HEV makes up for the weak points of EV and FCEV, HEV research is most common and most vigorous. As the technology of battery and electric motors improves, these electrical vehicles can be put into practical use. This paper focuses on the trend and technologic features of the motor that drives the HEV.

The interest in HEV (Hybrid Electric Vehicles) that are fuel efficient and environmental-friendly is increasing, and it is emphasized that not only engine but driving motor as a main part of HEV is important. Accordingly, high-power driving motor development is the principal issue. This paper is designed rotor core shape for high power of hybrid electric vehicle driving motor. Proposed spoke type rotor core shape can improve output power comparing with general type. Validity of proposed rotor core shape is proved by appling FEM (Finite Element Method).

Abstract

A new structure for a switchable mirror device based on reversible electrodeposition is proposed. This device does not contain Cu ions in the electrolyte and adapts a counter electrode. The feasibility of the device was evaluated with a WO3 film, which is a well-known electrochromic material, as a counter electrode. Even in the absence of Cu ions, the WO3 film facilitates a clean erase feature in the device. Furthermore, using a pre-deposited Ag film as a working electrode, Ag deposition can be driven at a substantially lower voltage than that in conventional devices. Moreover the deposition current decreases with the progress of Ag deposition, and stops after completion of the deposition process. The results clearly indicate that the tri-bromine ion, which makes the self-erasing circulation, is not generated during Ag deposition process. The new switchable mirror shows excellent bistability and size scale-up is possible because it does not consume continuous current in the mirror state. By appling the proposed technology, a switchable mirror device with a 7cm × 9cm active area was successfully fabricated.

Highlights

Cu-free switchable mirror device based on reversible electodeposition was developed.

Counter electrode material was introduced to the device for the first time.

Bistability was dramatically improved by application of pre-deposited Ag film.

The device has low self-erasing current and has potential for scale-up.

Graphical abstract

[DISPLAY OMISSION]

Juhee Song,Joohyeok Park,Jinyeong Jung,Chankyu Lee,Seo Yeoung Gim,HyeJung Ka,BoRa Yi,Mi-Ja Kim,Cho-il Kim,JaeHwan Lee 한국독성학회 2015 Toxicological Research Vol.31 No.3
Trans fat is a unsaturated fatty acid with trans configuration and separated double bonds. Analytical methods have been introduced to analyze trans fat content in foods including infrared (IR) spectroscopy, gas chromatography (GC), Fourier transform-infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, reverses-phase silver ion high performance liquid chromatography, and silver nitrate thin layer chromatography. Currently, FT-IR spectroscopy and GC are mostly used methods. Trans fat content in 6 vegetable oils were analyzed and processing effects including baking, stir-frying, pan-frying, and frying on the formation of trans fat in corn oil was evaluated by GC. Among tested vegetable oils, corn oil has 0.25 g trans fat/100 g, whereas other oils including rapeseed, soybean, olive, perilla, and sesame oils did not have detectable amount of trans fat content. Among cooking methods, stir-frying increased trans fat in corn oil whereas baking, pan-frying, and frying procedures did not make changes in trans fat content compared to untreated corn oils. However, the trans fat content was so low and food label can be declared as ‘0’ trans based on the regulation of Ministry of Food ad Drug Safety (MFDS) (< 2 g/100 g edible oil).
