      • Young Children’s Metacognition Expressed during Coding Play

        The purpose of this study is to explore young children’s metacognition expressed during coding play. The children participating in this study consisted of 13 five-year children(6 males and 7 females) at H Kindergarten in S City. Various data, such as observation records, researcher’s own journals, and informal consultation meeting records were collected and analyzed. The results of this study are as follows: First, metacognitive planning can be further activated in coding play while children create their own meaning through judgment and selection. Second, children are engaged in monitoring the degree to which performance is progressing towards a desired goal. Third, metacognitive control actively appeared in coding play while children changed ways of conducting tasks. Fourth, children review task performance and evaluate the quality of performance in coding play. The results of this study are expected to help understand how young children’s metacognition appears in coding play, and further reveal the educational value of coding play that helps young children activate their metacognition.

        Skin Soothing Effect of Three Herbs from the Namwon-Mt.Jiri Regions

        목적: 본 연구는 남원•지리산권에서 재배된 라벤더, 레몬그라스, 페퍼민트의 진정 기능성 화장품원료로서의 활용성을 평가하기 위 해 수행되었다. 방법: 남원•지리산권에서 재배된 라벤더, 레몬그라스, 페퍼민트를 50% 에탄올로 추출한 추출물로 HPLC를 이용한 19종 폴리페놀 동시분석을 진행하여 분석하고, 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH)를 통해 항산화 활성을 측정하였다. Realtime PCR을 이용하여 Filaggrin과 Involucrin의 mRNA 발현량 관찰을 통해 피부장벽 개선능을, HAS-2와 HAS-3의 mRNA 발현 량 관찰을 통해 보습 능력을 확인하였다. 또한 염증성 사이토카인인 IL-6와 친염증성매개물 NO의 발현량을 확인하여 항염증 효능 을 입증하였다. 결과: 19 종 페놀성화합물 동시분석 결과 라벤더에서 rosmarinic acid, 레몬그라스에서 chlorogenic acid와 syringic acid, p-coumaric acid, ferulic acid, 페퍼민트에서 caffeic acid와 quercitin hydrate, rosmarinic acid, hesperetin 성분을 확인하였다. 항산화 효능은 DPPH라디칼 소거능으로 확인하였으며 라벤더, 페퍼민트, 레몬그라스 순으로 우수한 효능을 보였다. 피부장벽 관련 유전자인 filaggrin과 involucrin은 라벤더와 레몬그라스, 페퍼민트 3 종 모두에서 무처리군보다 증가되었으며, 보습 관련 유전자인 HAS-2와 HAS-3 역시 라벤더와 레몬그라스, 페퍼민트에서 증가된 양상으로 확인하였다. 또한 라벤더, 레몬그라스, 페퍼민트 모 두 염증 관련 사이토카인 IL-6와 염증 매개물인 NO의 결과에서 농도의존적으로 억제 효능을 나타내었다. 결론: 남원•지리산권에 서 재배된 라벤더, 레몬그라스, 페퍼민트의 에탄올추출물은 항산화, 피부장벽, 보습, 항염증에 대한 우수한 효능을 보이므로 진정 화장품의 천연원료로써 활용가능하리라 판단된다. Purpose: This study was conducted to evaluate lavender, lemongrass, and peppermint grown in the Namwon-Mt.Jiri regions as functional soothing ingredients for cosmetics. Methods: The simultaneous analysis of 19 polyphenols in 50% ethanol-extracted samples of lavender, lemongrass, and peppermint cultivated in the Namwon-Mt.Jiri regions were analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Antioxidant activity was measured using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH). Using real-time PCR, improvements in skin barrier function were confirmed by observing the mRNA expression levels of filaggrin and involucrin, and the moisturizing ability was confirmed through the mRNA expression of HAS-2 and HAS- 3 . The anti-inflammatory efficacy was verified by confirming the expression levels of the inflammatory cytokine IL-6 and the pro-inflammatory mediator nitric oxide (NO). Results: In the simultaneous analysis of 19 phenolic compounds, rosmarinic acid from lavender; chlorogenic acid, syringic acid, p-coumaric acid, and ferulic acid from lemongrass; and caffeic acid, quercitin hydrate, rosmarinic acid, and hesperetin from peppermint were identified. Antioxidant efficacy was confirmed by DPPH radical scavenging, and excellent efficacy was shown in the order of lavender, peppermint, and lemongrass. Filaggrin and involucrin, skin barrier-related genes, were increased more in lavender, lemongrass, and peppermint than in the untreated group. HAS- 2 and HAS-3 were also confirmed to be increased in lavender, lemongrass, and peppermint. Lavender, lemongrass, and peppermint all showed concentrationdependent inhibition of IL-6 and NO. Conclusion: Extracts of lavender, lemongrass, and peppermint cultivated in the Namwon-Mt.Jiri regions had excellent antioxidant, skin barrier, moisturizing and anti-inflammatory effects, so may be considered for use as natural raw materials for soothing cosmetics.

        Genetic analysis of the interaction between G and R loci involved in the determination of bulb colors in onion (Allium cepa L.)

        Five major loci ( I , C , G , R , and L ) are known to control the inheritance of bulb colors in onion ( Allium cepa L.). Among them, the G and R loci are involved in the determination of chartreuse, yellow, and red bulb colors. To analyze the interaction between G and R loci, two F 2 populations originating from the cross between chartreuse and red parental lines were generated. Red, yellow, and chartreuse bulb colors were segregated in the F 2 populations but segregation ratios did not fi t into independent inheritance models. Two high-resolution melting (HRM) markers were developed to genotype the DFR-A and AcLAC12A genes responsible for R and G loci, respectively. In contrast to a previous hypothesis, genotypic analysis of F 2 populations demonstrated that chartreuse bulb colors appeared only when the R locus was homozygous recessive, whereas red bulb colors appeared regardless of G genotypes. These results indicate that the chartreuse bulb color can appear when a branched pathway producing anthocyanin is blocked by the inactivation of DFR-A . If anthocyanin synthesis is not blocked, yellow and chartreuse colors cannot appear despite the production of yellow or chartreuse pigments. Here, a linkage map covering both G and R loci was constructed. The G and R loci were linked with a 19.5 cM distance on chromosome 7. In addition to AcLAC12A , seven additional laccase-coding genes were identifi ed from a transcriptome produced from onion bulbs. Analysis of the transcription levels of these genes indicated that only AcLAC12A was predominantly expressed in onion bulbs, demonstrating that AcLAC12A was a major laccase in onion bulbs.

        Comparing the Behavioral Patterns and Psychological Characteristics of Web Board Gamers and Gamblers

        Objective In Korea, online board games, such as “flower cards,” are played using virtual money. In contrast, Internet-based gambling (ibGambling) concerns the use of real money to gamble online. We hypothesized that online board gamers using virtual money show less risky behaviors than do gamblers who use real money, and that, in regard to psychological aspects, online board gamers are less depressed and more introverted than online gamblers are. Methods For this study, 100 online board gamers, 100 ibGamblers, 100 offline gamblers (offGamblers), and 100 age- and sex-matched healthy controls were recruited by an online research company. Gambling behavior and self-efficacy were assessed using the Korean Gambling Behavior Scale-high/low factors (KGBS-H/L) and the Gambling Abstinence Self-efficacy Scale (GASS). Additionally, introversion, depression, and mania tendency were assessed. Results Online board gamers had good intentions gaming, as evidenced by their higher KGBS-L scores than ibGamblers and offGamblers, and they showed less risky behaviors, as evidenced by their lower KGBS-H scores than offGamblers. Additionally, online board gamers were less introverted than ibGamblers and less depressed than offGamblers. Conclusion Online board gaming could be a gateway to the world of gambling (ibGambling or OffGambling). However, the higher tendency of online board gamers to engage in good intentioned gaming could help prevent online board gaming from progressing to online or offline gambling.

        Effects of Oxide-trapped Charges and Interface Traps in Organic Self-assembled Monolayer/Silicon Systems due to Local Current Injection

        The charge trapping characteristics of silicon (Si) substrates covered with a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) were studied using on a local biasing method with Kelvin-probe force microscopy. A hexadecyl SAM (HD-SAM) on a Si substrate, in which the molecules were covalently bonded to the Si substrate, was found to have no charge trapping sites at its monolayer/Si interface while an ocatadecylsilyl SAM (ODS-SAM) on a Si substrate, in which a thin oxide layer was inserted between the molecules and the Si substrate, showed a distinct charge trapping behavior. The alkyl monolayer directly fixed on Si is promising as a very thin insulating layer in Si microelectronics.

      • Flotation separation of quartz from apatite and surface forces in bubble–particle interactions: Role of pH and cationic amine collector contents

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Dodecylamine hydrochloride (DAHC) surfactant was used as a collector for effective apatite recovery through flotation separation in siliceous phosphate ore, wherein quartz is the main gangue mineral. The roles of pH and collector concentration were investigated, and the adsorption of the collector on the minerals and related properties were systematically studied by measuring zeta potential, contact angle, surface tension, and adsorption density. When the collector concentration was 5×10<SUP>−5</SUP> M, 23.7% P<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>5</SUB> grade was achieved for a conditioning time of 10min. However, the separation performance of the flotation was lower at pH 7 regardless of the collector concentration. Thus, more collector molecules are adsorbed on the quartz surface than the apatite surface at pH 3 and 5×10<SUP>−5</SUP> M of collector, resulting in separation of quartz and apatite. The extended Derjaguin–Landau–Verwey–Overbeek (DLVO) theory, which considers the hydrophobic interaction energy, revealed that the improved flotation performance is attributed to a hydrophobic attractive force that is a consequence of the collector adsorption. Therefore, the results of flotation of artificially mixed minerals further revealed that optimization of the amine collector concentration and pH value can selectively separate quartz from apatite.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Selective separation of quartz from apatite can be obtained using the collector at pH 3. </LI> <LI> Adsorption of the collector on the mineral surface occures by electrostatic attraction. </LI> <LI> Higher selective separation obtained due to higher adsorption of collector on quartz surface. </LI> <LI> Hydrophobic interaction energy improved due to the collector adsorbed on the quartz surface. </LI> <LI> Quartz particle can be reversely floated efficiently by high hydrophobicity interaction. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

        Decolonization of Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus: Role in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

        Purpose: We aimed to assess the incidence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) colonization and infection in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) by using various decolonization methods and to evaluate their efficacy. Methods: Medical records of all neonates who were admitted to the NICU of Seoul National University Children's Hospital were retrospectively reviewed. Surveillance culture were obtained for all neonates in the NICU 48 hours after admission. Three periods with different decolonization methods were compared; Period 1 was without any decolonization measures (July 1, 2009 to August 26, 2010). In period 2, intranasal mupirocin and chlorhexidine gluconate bathing were administered to MRSA-colonized neonates (August 27, 2010 to September 6, 2011). In period 3, only chlorhexidine bathing was performed for MRSA-colonized infants (September 7, 2011 to August 31, 2012). Results: A total of 1,378 infants were admitted to the NICU during the study period. Baseline demographic and clinical characteristics were similar among the 3 periods. The incidence of MRSA colonization per 1,000 patient-days was 6.27 for period 1, 7.02 for period 2, and 6.29 for period 3; however, these values were not significantly different. The incidence of MRSA infection was highest in period 3, with 0.69 cases per 1,000 patient-days; however, this finding was not significant. The MRSA infection/colonization ratio also did not differ significantly among the 3 study periods. Conclusion: Decolonization of MRSA in the NICU with the application of chlorhexidine gluconate bathing alone or in combination with intranasal mupirocin were not effective in decreasing the incidence of MRSA colonization and infection.
