        Influence of zircon on cristobalite crystallization of silicabased ceramic cores

        Zircon is usually used as a main additive to silica-based ceramic core materials in precise investment casting in order toimprove their high temperature properties. But there is still a disagreement in its effect on crystallization behavior of fusedsilica. In this study, cristobalite crystallization of fused silica in three silica-based core materials containing 10, 30 and 50 wt%zircon respectively were investigated through X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy equipped with energydispersive spectrometer (SEM/EDS). Results showed that zircon addition had neglected effect on cristobalite crystallizationduring sintering at 1180 oC, 1200 oC, and 1220 oC, but could decrease crystallization during simulated casting process at1500 oC. It was suggested that diffusion of zirconium atoms played a crucial role in this suppressing behavior of zircon on thecristobalite crystallization. During cooling from 1500 oC, cristobalite transformation from β to α caused microcracks in thesesamples that containing 10% or 30% zircon. But when zircon content increased to 50%, crack was prevented. Less phasetransformation of fused silica → cristobalite and enhanced strength by zircon was supposed to be the reason that wasresponsible for prevented cracks.

        Breviscapine Ameliorates Fear Extinction and Anxiety in BALB/cJ Mice

        Objective In this research, the influence of breviscapine on anxiety, fear elimination, and aggression and the potential mechanism was investigated. Methods Anxiety and locomotion were analyzed by elevated plus maze and open field test in mice. Bussey-Saksida Mouse Touch Screen Chambers were used to perform fear conditioning. Territorial aggression was assessed by resident intruder test. Protein levels were evaluated by Western blot. Breviscapine improved fear-extinction learning in BALB/cJ mice. Results Breviscapine at 20-100 mg/kg increased center cross number, total distance traveled, and velocity in a dose-dependent manner. On the other hand, breviscapine at 20-100 mg/kg decreased the immobility time in open field test. In addition, breviscapine at 20-100 mg/kg increased the ratio of time on the open arm, time on the distal parts of the open arm, and total distance traveled in elevated plus maze. Breviscapine at 100 mg/kg increased the average attack latency and decreased the number of attacks over the last 3 days of resident intruder test. In hippocampus, protein levels of postsynaptic density protein-95 and synaptophysin were elevated by breviscapine at these three doses. Conclusion The administration of breviscapine alleviates fear extinction, anxiety, and aggression, while increases locomotor in a dose-dependent manner, which might be associated with its influence on synaptic function.

        <P><B>Stealth Nod Factor Recognition</B></P><P>Legumes' symbiotic interaction with nitrogen fixing bacteria supplies the plant with nitrogen. Many important crop plants, however, cannot establish these symbioses and, thus, agriculture depends on externally applied fertilizers. Surprisingly, <B>Liang <I>et al.</I></B> (p. 1384, published online 5 September) found that several nonleguminous plants, including <I>Arabidopsis</I>, tomato, and corn, were able to respond to the same Nod factors that initiate the microbial symbiosis in soybean.</P>

        Clinical application of intravesical botulinum toxin type A for overactive bladder and interstitial cystitis

        After decades of clinical and basic science research, the clinical application of botulinum toxin A (Botox) in urology has been extended to neurogenic detrusor overactivity (NDO), idiopathic detrusor overactivity, refractory overactive bladder (OAB), interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS), lower urinary tract symptoms, benign prostatic hyperplasia, and neurogenic or non-neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction in children. Botox selectively disrupts and modulates neurotransmission, suppresses detrusor overactivity, and modulates sensory function, inflammation, and glandular function. In addition to motor effects, Botox has been found to have sensory inhibitory effects and anti-inflammatory effects; therefore, it has been used to treat IC/BPS and OAB. Currently, Botox has been approved for the treatment of NDO and OAB. Recent clinical trials on Botox for the treatment of IC/BPS have reported promising therapeutic effects, including reduced bladder pain. Additionally, the therapeutic duration was found to be longer with repeated Botox injections than with a single injection. However, the use of Botox for IC/BPS has not been approved. This paper reviews the recent advances in intravesical Botox treatment for OAB and IC/BPS.

      • A Comparative Study on the Policy Features of Chinese Marine Economic Development Pilot Zones

        본 논문은 2011-2012년 설정된 중국 해양경제시범구들을 연구대상으로 하여 각 시범구의 정책특징을 정성적인 비교분석 방법을 통하여 분석하였다. 4개 시 범구의 비교 준거기준은 각 시범구의 경제발전 목표, 과학과 교육방안, 외부지역 과의 발전연계방안, 정치적 기능들이며, 그 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 경제발전목표 측면에서 산동(산동반도남색경제구)은 ‘중국북부 해양경제 의 핵심’을, 절강(절강해양경제발전시범구)은 ‘지역해양경제 강화’을, 광동(광동 해양경제종합시범구)은 ‘중국전체 해양경제의 핵심’을, 복건(복건해협남색경제시 범구)은 ‘지역해양산업의 촉진’을 각각 내세우고 있다. 둘째, 과학과 교육 측면에서 산동이 가장 강점이 크고, 절강은 상대적 강점을 가지지만 과학적 성취능력이 부족하고, 광동은 상대적 취약성과 연구기금체계 부족이, 복건은 과학적 능력 부족의 특징을 각각 가지고 있다. 셋째, 외부지역과의 발전연계방안 측면에서 산동은 북중국 및 동북아시아와의 넓은 연계망을, 절강은 지역중심의 좁은 영역만을, 광동은 남중국과 남동아시아 와의 넓은 연계망을, 복건은 대만 중심의 가장 좁은 영역을 대상으로 한다. 넷째, 정치적 기능 측면에서 산동은 ‘서구세계에 정치적 의지 표현과 동북아시 아 국가들의 협력 촉구’를, 절강은 ‘남중국해 조어도분쟁 해결과 전략적 안보물 자 공급 확보’를, 광동은 ‘광동-홍콩-마카오의 통합 강화와 남중국해 분해결 촉 진’을, 복건은 ‘대만과의 정치적 신뢰 및 친선유지’를 각각 도모하고 있다.

      • The Effects of Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) on the Alleviation of English Reading Anxiety of Senior High School Students

        The author’s goal in this study was to see whether combining task-based language teaching (TBLT) with English reading can help students overcome their English reading anxiety and enhance their English reading skills. Through surveys, exams, and interviews, the author investigated the degree and underlying reasons of high school students’ English reading anxiety, as well as the effects of TBLT on students’ reading anxiety. A total of 100 senior high school students from Jilin City, China, who were enrolled in first-year English courses participated in the survey. Based on an analysis of the survey and interview findings, a TBLT model for English reading was developed and applied in the experimental class over the course of four months. The following conclusions can be drawn from the data analysis: In the Chinese setting, senior high school students have a significant high level of English reading anxiety. TBLT has played a positive effect on reducing English reading anxiety in senior high school students and improve their English reading achievement to some extent.

        A series of benzo-annulated derivatives of tryptanthrin were prepared and their optical and redoxproperties were studied. Tryptanthrin and its benzo-annulated derivatives showed selective inhibitory activity on topo I with an increase of activity on topo II by benzo-annulation on quinazolin-4(3H)-one moiety. Although the benzo-annulation on quinazolin-4(3H)-one ring did not affect significantly on the inhibitory activities against topo I and II, the benzoannulation on indolin-3-one ring affected the inhibitory activity very much especially by linear annulation. Cytotoxicities were not significantly changed upon benzoannulation, which were not directly related either to the inhibitory activities against topo I and II or to the reduction potentials.

        A series of 6-deoxymollugins were prepared five steps from benzaldehyde and its derivatives via phenylboronic acid-catalyzed chromenylation as a key step. Their inhibitory activities against tyrosinase from mushroom were evaluated to show that the parent, methyl 2,2-dimethyl-2H-benzo[h]chromene-5-carboxylate (9a) showed best and promising inhibitory activity at IC50 = 18.3 μM.

        Structural time-varying damage detection using synchrosqueezing wavelet transform

        This paper proposed a structural time-varying damage detection method by using synchrosqueezing wavelet transform. The instantaneous frequencies of a structure with time-varying damage are first extracted using the synchrosqueezing wavelet transform. Since the proposed synchrosqueezing wavelet transform is invertible, thus each individual component can be reconstructed and the modal participation factor ratio can be extracted based on the amplitude of the analytical signals of the reconstructed individual components. Then, the new time-varying damage index is defined based on the extracted instantaneous frequencies and modal participation factor ratio. Both free and forced vibrations of a classical Duffing nonlinear system and a simply supported beam structure with abrupt and linear time-varying damage are simulated. The proposed synchrosqueezing wavelet transform method can successfully extract the instantaneous frequencies of the damaged structures under free vibration or vibration due to earthquake excitation. The results also show that the defined time-varying damage index can effectively track structural time-varying damage.
