The purpose of this study is to analysis the change patterns of life style and education of North Korean defectors. The questionnaire of this study is for two hundred North Korean defectors who had entered South Korea in 2001. The questions are about residence, education, legal issue, and health. According to this study, the residences of the defectors were still concentrated on the Metropolitan area. Type of residence has become varied so as to increase proportion of their own-houses and long-term leases. Males had got educated for employment purpose, while females had learned using computer the most. Among age groups, the 20s and the 30s had taken regular education the most. As the length of staying in South Korea had increased, the legal cases had decreased; however, the legal issues had become more complicated. The number of the defectors with chronic diseases has gradually declined; thus, overall health status of the defectors had become better. As the length of staying in South Korea had increased, their needs for supports of basic life had decreased, while the demands for consultation about marriage and legal issues. In the conclusion, we point out several ideas based on this study result, which can be utilized in developing policies and supporting programs for North Korean defector adaptation in South Korea.

        Eom, Jin Sup,Koh, Kyung S.,Al-Hilal, Taslim A.,Park, Jin Woo,Jeon, Ok Cheol,Moon, Hyun Tae,Byun, Youngro Elsevier 2010 Thrombosis research Vol.126 No.3

Abstract

Introduction

Thrombogenic occlusion, at the anastomotic microvessels, contributed impaired blood flow to flap failure. The effect of an orally active low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) derivative conjugated with deoxycholic acid (DOCA) on the patency of anastomosis of the crushed rat artery was investigated, expecting its antithrombogenic effect.

Materials and Methods

60 Femoral arteries of 30 rats, divided into three groups of 20 each, were reanastomosed. LMWH-DOCA conjugate was orally administered prior to and after operation for 5 consecutive days. On the sixth day of operation, the patency of the anastomosed artery was evaluated.

Results

The patency of oral LMWH-DOCA (10mg/kg) group was significantly enhanced from 15% to 45%, compared to non-treated control group. On the other hand, when the dosage of LMWH-DOCA was reduced to 1mg/kg, its efficacy on anastomosis was not as efficacious in terms of patency. The intima of crushed artery was impaired and thrombus formation was examined in the control group. In the drug treated group, the patency was only compromised by a thin layer of thrombus that covered the inner layer of the vessel without causing any damage to the internal elastic lamina.

Conclusion

The medication of oral LMWH-DOCA conjugate has been vetted in microvascular anastomosis of the crushed artery. LMWH-DOCA was potentially useful for improving the patency in compromised vessels after microsurgery.

      • Classification of Anger, Fear, and Surprise using EEG

        Jin-Sup Eom,Hye-Ryeon Yang,Jin-Hun Sohn 대한인간공학회 2012 대한인간공학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2012 No.5

Objective: It is difficult to classify anger, fear, and surprise emotions with autonomic nervous system response patterns such as heart rate, electrodermal activity, respiratory etc., because these three emotions contain similar levels of valence and arousal dimensions. The purpose of this study was to classify three emotions by using EEG signals. Background: The importance of human-computer interaction has been increased in the past decade in the various fields of industry, education, and rehabilitation. EEG-based emotion recognition system is advantageous since it directly makes us measure brain activity while experiencing emotions. There are three types of EEG features that are useful to detect emotional states: Frequency bands (theta, alpha, beta, and gamma), hemispheric asymmetry, EEG coherences. Method: Three emotions (i.e., anger, fear and surprise) were induced by audio-visual stimuli. EEG signals were recorded at F2, F4, P3, P4, and Cz sites when subjects were exposed to the emotion induction stimuli. The following EEG features were included in the analysis: The relative powers of theta, alpha, beta, and gamma wave, the brain asymmetry at frontal and parietal regions for 4 frequency bands, and the brain coherences among 5 sites for alpha and beta wave Conclusion: Linear discriminant analysis using three types of EEG features showed that the mean accuracy for emotion recognition was 66.3%. The accuracy rate for anger was relatively high with frequency bands, and brain coherence was effective to classify surprise. Mean accuracy rate was relatively low with hemispheric asymmetry. Application: The results might be useful in particular situations where the emotion needs to be recognized with no detectable facial and verbal expressions.

Low Frequency Noise and It's Psychological Effects

        Jin-Sup Eom,Sook-Hee Kim,Sung-Soo Jung,Jin-Hun Sohn 대한인간공학회 2014 大韓人間工學會誌 Vol.33 No.1

Objective: This entire study has two parts. Study I aimed to develop a psychological assessment scale and the study II aimed to investigate the effects of LFN (low frequency noise) on the psychological responses in humans, using the scale developed in the study I. Background: LFN is known to have a negative impact on the functioning of humans. The negative impact of LFN can be categorized into two major areas of functioning of humans, physiological and psychological areas of functioning. The physiological impact can cause abnormalities in threshold, balancing and/or vestibular system, cardiovascular system and, hormone changes. Psychological functioning includes cognition, communication, mental health, and annoyance. Method: 182 college students participated in the study I in development of a psychological assessment scale and 42 paid volunteers participated in the study II to measure psychological responses. The LFN stimuli consisted of 12 different pure tones and 12 different 1 octave-band white noises and each stimulus had 4 different frequencies and 3 different sounds pressure levels. Results: We developed the psychological assessment scale consisting of 17 items with 3 dimensions of psychological responses (i.e., perceived physical, perceived physiological, and emotional responses). The main findings of LFN on the responses were as follows: 1. Perceived psychological responses showed a linear relation with SPL (sound pressure level), that is the higher the SPL is, the higher the negative psychological responses were. 2. Psychological responses showed quadric relations with SPL in general. 3. More negative responses at 31.5Hz LFN than those of 63 and 125Hz were reported, which is deemed to be caused by perceived vibration by 31.5Hz. "Perceived vibration" at 31.5Hz than those of other frequencies of LFN is deemed to have amplified the negative psychological response. Consequently there found different effects of low frequency noise with different frequencies and intensity (SPL) on multiple psychological responses. Conclusion: Three dimensions of psychological responses drawn in regard to this study differed from others in the frequencies and SLP of LFN. Negative psychological responses are deemed to be differently affected by the frequency, SPL of the LFN and "feel vibration" induced by the LFN. Application: The psychological scale from our study can be applied in quantitative psychological measurement of LFN at home or industrial environment. In addition, it can also help design systems to block LFN to provide optimal conditions if used the study outcome, .i.e., the relations between physical and psychological responses of LFN.

Lyophilized allogeneic costal cartilage graft for septorhinoplasty

Jin Sup Eom,Dong Jin Kim,Jin Woo Song,Jong Woo Choi,고경석 대한미용성형외과학회 2023 Archives of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Vol.29 No.4

As rhinoplasty techniques have become more complex, surgeons often need more than what septal or conchal cartilage can provide. While costal cartilage became more popular for that reason, some surgeons are still uncomfortable with its invasiveness and donor site morbidity. Here, we used lyophilized allogeneic costal cartilage for septorhinoplasty and investigated its safety and usefulness. Methods The costal cartilage was harvested from a cadaveric donor and treated via multiple steps, including defatting and lyophilization, to remove all viable cells and antigenicity. The cartilage was then stored at room temperature and rehydrated 24 hours before use. Lyophilized cartilage allografts were used in 20 patients. Three types of septal graft were performed — spreader, batten, and extension — to correct septal or columellar deviation and enhance the nasal tip. Results The mean follow-up period was 4.3 years. In all cases, the graft successfully met the rhinoplasty purpose. No significant deformation was detected in any of the patients. Although warping was observed in one patient (5%), there was no case of clinical infection, extrusion, or graft removal and no revisional surgery for an unfavorable aesthetic result. Conclusions Lyophilized allogeneic cartilage was used for septorhinoplasty very safely and effectively. It can be carved into any shape and has all other properties required for perfectly replacing autologous costal cartilage. The main advantage of cartilage allografts is a limitless supply of high-quality cartilage without donor site morbidity. The disadvantages include the need for special facilities and manpower and extra covering cost.

      • Perforator Reconstruction to Salvage the Jeopardized Flaps

Eom, Jin Sup,Choi, Dong Hoon The Korean Society for Microsurgery 2015 Archives of reconstructive microsurgery Vol.24 No.1

During flap elevation, most perforators are cut except one or more perforators that are essential to flap survival. However these cutout perforators can cause deterioration of the blood circulation of the flap. To salvage the jeopardized flaps, rebuilding the perforator system is essential for flap survival. In the first case, after flap elevation, the upper abdominal flap margin was severely ischemic. To supply blood to the upper abdominal flaps, we found and used a major perforator underneath the upper abdominal flap which was cut earlier during the elevation, and we performed reanastomosis with ipsilateral deep inferior epigastric artery. Upper abdominal flap ischemic area was limited to a narrow suture area. In the second case, we performed free superficial inferior epigastric artery (SIEA) flap reconstruction. After successful anastomosis of the SIEA and superficial inferior epigastric vein (SIEV) with internal mammary artery and vein, serious venous congestion occurred immediately because of SIEV malfunction. We found the largest perforator vein under the flap, as an alternate way to drain, then connected it with the thoracoacromial vein with a vein graft harvested in the contralateral SIEV. Circulation has improved. In conclusion, perforator system reconstruction is essential in a jeopardized flap salvage.
