To develop a biomarker predicting tumor treatment efficacy is helpful to reduce time, medical expenditure, and efforts in oncology therapy. In clinics, microvessel density using immunohistochemistry has been proposed as an indicator that correlates with both tumor size and metastasis of cancer. In the preclinical study, we hypothesized that vascular morphometrics using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) could be potential indicators to estimate the treatment efficacy of breast cancer. To verify this hypothesis, a 13762-MAT-B-III rat breast tumor was grown in a dorsal skinfold window chamber which was applied to a nude mouse, and the change in vascular morphology was longitudinally monitored during tumor growth and metronomic cyclophosphamide treatment. Based on the daily OCTA maximum intensity projection map, multiple vessel parameters (vessel skeleton density, vessel diameter index, fractal dimension, and lacunarity) were compared with the tumor size in no tumor, treated tumor, and untreated tumor cases. Although each case has only one animal, we found that the vessel skeleton density (VSD), vessel diameter index and fractal dimension (FD) tended to be positively correlated with tumor size while lacunarity showed a partially negative correlation. Moreover, we observed that the changes in the VSD and FD are prior to the morphological change of the tumor. This feasibility study would be helpful in evaluating the tumor vascular response to treatment in preclinical settings.

A typographic error was found in the Experimental Procedure of the Method section in the paper “Vascular Morphometric Changes During Tumor Growth and Chemotherapy in a Murine Mammary Tumor Model Using OCT Angiography: a Preliminary Study,” [Curr. Opt. Photonics 3, 54-65 (2019)] and is therefore corrected in this Author Correction.

In this study, a convergent heat treatment was performed in certain temperature regions in order to control the microstructures of Nd-rich phases and to reduce thermal stress on grain boundaries which could be caused during expansion and shrinkage of Nd-rich and $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ phases. The difference of thermal expansion coefficient between $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ and Nd-rich phases is the mechanism for convergent heat treatment. The Nd-rich phases which were located in junctions could penetrate into the grain boundaries between $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ phases due to the difference of thermal expansion coefficient. Through the convergent heat treatment, the microcracks that were observed in cyclic heat treatment were not observed and coercivity was increased to 34.05 kOe at 8 cycles.

Development of a biomarker for predicting tumor-treatment efficacy is a matter of great concern, to reduce time, medical expense, and effort in oncology therapy. In a preclinical study, we hypothesized that the blood-flow parameter based on laser speckle flowmetry (LSF) could be a potential indicator to estimate the efficacy of breast-cancer treatment. To verify this hypothesis, a 13762-MAT-B-III rat breast tumor was grown in a dorsal skinfold window chamber applied to a nude mouse, and the change in blood flow rate (BFR) - or the speckle flow index (SFI) is used together as the same meaning in this manuscript -was longitudinally monitored during tumor growth and metronomic cyclophosphamide treatment. Based on the daily LSF angiogram, several BFR parameters (baseline SFI, normalized SFI, and ∆) were compared to tumor size in the normal, treated, and untreated tumor groups. Despite the incomplete tumor treatment, we found that the daily changes in all BFR parameters tended to have partially positive correlation with tumor size. Moreover, we observed that the changes in baseline SFI and normalized SFI responded one day earlier than the tumor shrinkage during chemotherapy. However, daily variations in the hypercapnia-induced ∆ lagged tumor shrinkage by one day. This study would contribute not only to evaluating tumor vascular response to treatment, but also to monitoring blood-flow-mediated diseases (in brain, skin, and retina) by using LSF in preclinical settings.

As a reflector of reference arm in OCT systems, a coated fiber reflector has mostly used. Instead, this paper has realized the swaept source optical coherence tomography system using a loop mirror within a reference ann. Through the expehments for a tilted thin glass plate, we found that the loop mirror is better than the coated fiber typed mirror for obtaining the clear image.

In this paper, the swept source optical coherence tomography system has realized using a free-space interferometer based on a beam splitter, Personal computer has completed the control for tunable wavelength laser digitally and the B-scan motor as well. From each experiment for an onion and a salmon egg, we confirmed that the in vivo epidermal cross-sectional images for tliem can be obtained appropriately.

This paper presents Spectral-Domain optical measurement system using self-fabricated CCD sensor driver. The light source is a high brightness white LED and the detector is a 2048 array typed CCD image sensor. I have fabricated the CCD sensor driver to generate four pulse signals, which are the CCD-driving pulses. Using this Spectral Domain optical measurement system, the distance value between the reference mirror and the sample mirror can be obtained successfully.
