        β-Cyclodextrin functionalized magnetic nanoparticles for the removal of pharmaceutical residues in drinking water

        Trace amounts of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are found in our water systems,and they are known to have adverse effects on wildlife and human at the ng/L to lg/L range, belowthe detection limit of most water analytical instruments. Methacrylate acid (MAA)-ethyl acrylate (EA)colloidal scaffolds were prepared via emulsion polymerization and used as templates for the in-situco-precipitation of Fe2+ to produce stable functional magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) (<500 nm) decoratedwith b-cyclodextrin (b-CD) (FMNP). Emulsion polymerization with the controlled addition of monomermixtures allowed for good size control, and silica coating was introduced to prevent the oxidation ofFMNP. The superparamagnetic FMNP with high saturation magnetization (33 emu/g) could be readilyseparated from water using a high gradient magnetic separator (HGMS). Procaine hydrochloride (PrHy)was used as a model pharmaceutical residue to evaluate the performance of the FMNP, and 53.65 mgPrHy/g FMNP was absorbed using 600 ppm FMNP. A fast (30 min) adsorption kinetic follows thePseudo-first-order kinetic model that described the physical adsorption through a 1 to 1 host–guestinclusion mechanism. And the adsorption behavior followed the Freundlich isotherm with a linearadsorption performance. The proposed system is scalable and adaptable to existing water treatment processes,and it can be used for the detection of low concentration pharmaceuticals via a pre-concentratingstrategy.

        Imbalance of Innate and Adaptive Immunity in Esophageal Achalasia

        Background/AimsPrevious studies reveal that immune-mediated neuroinflammation plays a key role in the etiology of esophageal achalasia. However, the understanding of leucocyte phenotype and proportion is limited. This study aim to evaluate the phenotypes of leukocytes and peripheral blood mononuclear cells transcriptomes in esophageal achalasia. MethodsWe performed high-dimensional flow cytometry to identified subsets of peripheral leukocytes, and further validated in lower esophageal sphincter histologically. RNA sequencing was applied to investigate the transcriptional changes in peripheral blood mononuclear cells of patients with achalasia. Cell-type Identification by Estimating Relative Subsets of RNA Transcripts (CIBERSORT) was used for estimating the immune cell types. A differential gene expression analysis was performed and the differential expressed genes were subjected to gene ontology, Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes network, protein-protein interaction network construction. ResultsAn imbalance between innate and adaptive immune cells occurred in achalasia. Specifically, neutrophils and CD8+ T cells increased both in peripheral blood and lower esophageal sphincter in achalasia. Eosinophils decreased in peripheral blood but massively infiltrated in lower esophageal sphincter. CIBERSORT analysis of peripheral blood mononuclear cells RNA sequencing displayed an increased prevalence of CD8+ T cells. 170 dysregulated genes were identified in achalasia, which were enriched in immune cells migration, immune response, etc. Proton pump inhibitor analysis revealed the intersections and gained 7 hub genes in achalasia, which were IL-6, Toll-like receptor 2, IL-1β, tumor necrosis factor, complement C3, and complement C1q A chain. ConclusionPatients with achalasia exhibited an imbalance of systematic innate and adaptive immunity, which may play an important role in the development of achalasia.

        Self-micro emulsifying formulation improved intestinal absorption and oral bioavailability of bakuchiol

        Bakuchiol (BAK), isolated from the seeds ofPsoralea corylifolia L., recently presents a variety ofpharmacologic activities. However, the poor oral bioavailabilitylimits its further development and clinical use. The purpose of this study was to establish a self-microemulsifying(SME) formulation for oral deliveryimprovement of BAK. The optimized liquid SME formulationwas comprised of BAK (40 %), Cremophor RH 40(30 %) and Labrasol (30 %). The emulsion droplets werespherical in shape, and particle size and zeta potential weredetermined. The in vitro dissolution test of BAK-SMEformulation illustrated faster dissolution rate than the bulkdrug. The permeabilities of 40 lg mL-1 BAK-SME formulationin rat intestinal segments of duodenum, jejunum,ileum and colon were 30.91 9 10-3, 23.61 9 10-3,29.43 9 10-3 and 23.62 9 10-3 cm min-1, respectively,exhibiting 3.99 times in duodenum, 2.59 times in ileum and 2.31 times in colon greater than BAK perfusate. The oralbioavailability of BAK-SME formulation at a dose of150 mg kg-1 was determined in rats. The Cmax and theAUC(0–24h) were 515.4 ng mL-1 and 4,327.2 h ng mL-1,respectively, which were 1.90 fold and 1.73 fold greaterthan the value of BAK suspension. All these results clearlystated that BAK-SME formulation performed wellimprovementon oral bioavailability of BAK.

        Optimization Design for Dynamic Characters of Electromagnetic Apparatus Based on Niche Sorting Multi-objective Particle Swarm Algorithm

        The electromagnetic apparatus plays an important role in high power electrical systems. It is of great importance to provide an effective approach for the optimization of the high power electromagnetic apparatus. However, premature convergence and few Pareto solution set of the optimization for electromagnetic apparatus always happen. This paper proposed a modified multi-objective particle swarm optimization algorithm based on the niche sorting strategy. Applying to the modified algorithm, this paper guarantee the better Pareto optimal front with an enhanced distribution. Aiming at shortcomings in the closing bounce and slow breaking velocity of electromagnetic apparatus, the multi-objective optimization model was established on the basis of the traditional optimization. Besides, by means of the improved multi-objective particle swarm optimization algorithm, this paper processed the model and obtained a series of optimized parameters (decision variables). Compared with other different classical algorithms, the modified algorithm has a satisfactory performance in the multi-objective optimization problems in the electromagnetic apparatus.

        An Experimental Study of an SMA-Based Self-Centering Damper

        The self-centering energy dissipation devices can reduce or avoid the residual inter-storey drifts of structures. This study aims a shape memory alloy (SMA) -based self-centering damper that employs the pre-tensioned SMA wires and pre-compressed springs as energy dissipating group and re-centering group, respectively. Compared with the conventional self-centering dampers which mainly use SMA wires to off er restoring forces, this damper possesses much reliable re-centering capability. The confi gurations, detailed assembly process and working principle of the damper are introduced. In order to evaluate the hysteretic behaviour of the damper, a damper specimen was manufactured and a series of quasi-static mechanical tests were conducted on the specimen with considering the infl uence of load amplitude and loading frequency. The results indicate that the dissipated energy per cycle greatly increases while the equivalent viscous damping ratio shows a slight change with the increase of load amplitude. Loading frequency has a great infl uence on the equivalent viscous damping ratio of the damper. To improve the energy dissipating capacity of the damper with maintaining its full re-centering capability, it is suggested that the pre-compression force applied to springs should be equal to the force diff erence between the two groups SMA wires at the equilibrium position.

        Tailored therapy and long-term surveillance of malignant germ cell tumors in the female genital system: 10-year experience

        Objective: To explore the appropriate treatment of malignant germ cell tumor (MGCT) in thefemale genital system, and to analyze the factors influencing both therapeutic response andsurvival outcome. Methods: A cohort of 230-Chinese women diagnosed with MGCT of the genital systemwas retrospectively reviewed and prospectively followed. The demographic and pathologicalfeatures, extent of disease and surgery, treatment efficiency, recurrence and survival wereanalyzed. Results: MGCTs from different genital origins shared a similar therapeutic strategy andresponse, except that all eight vaginal cases were infantile yolk sac tumors. The patients’ curerate following the initial treatment, 5-year overall survival and disease-free survival (DFS)were 85.02%, 95.00%, and 86.00%, respectively. Although more extensive excision couldenhance the remission rate; it did not improve the patients’ survival. Instead, the level of themedical institution, extent of surgery and disease were independent prognostic factors forrelapse (p<0.05). Approximately 20% of patients had recurrent or refractory disease, morethan half of whom were in remission following secondary cytoreductive surgery with salvagechemotherapy. Conclusion: Fertility-sparing surgery with or without standardized PEB/PVB (cisplatin,etoposide/vincristine, and bleomycin) chemotherapy is applicable for female MGCTsof different origins. Comprehensive staging is not required; nor is excessive debulkingsuggested. Appropriate cytoreduction by surgery and antineoplastic medicine at anexperienced medical institution can bring about an excellent prognosis for these patients.

        HALF-METALLIC SILICENE AND GERMANENE NANORIBBONS: TOWARDS HIGH-PERFORMANCE SPINTRONICS DEVICE

        By using first-principles calculations, we predict that an in-plane homogenous electrical ¯eld can induce half-metallicity in hydrogen-terminated zigzag silicene and germanene nanoribbons (ZSiNRs and ZGeNRs). A dual-gated ¯nite ZSiNR device reveals a nearly perfect spin-¯lter e±ciency (SFE)of up to 99% while a quadruple-gated ¯nite ZSiNR device serves as an effective spin ¯eld e®ect transistor (FET) with an on/o® current ratio of over 100 from ab initio quantum transport simulation. This discovery opens up novel prospect of silicene and germanene in spintronics.

        Mechanism of Synergetic Growth of Flexibility and Strength of Biomimetic Nanocomposite Fibre

        Nanocomposites with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) can combine the stiffness and multi-functionality of carbonnanotubes with the advantages of high toughness and processability of polymers giving rise to properties different from thatof general composites. However, when the content of CNTs increases gradually, the flexibility of the composite fibre canreduce. In this paper, we propose a simple method of softening the composite fibre via dimensional helical deformation offibre inner macromolecule bundles to avoid the deterioration of fibre flexibility. The theoretical simulations were conductedto predict proper helical deformations of the single fibre to increase fibre softness, followed by practical softening of thepolyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF)/CNTs composite by tensional twisting of the single fibres. The fibres with and withouttensional twisting were tested by Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffractionand mechanical drawing. Results showed the reinforcement of the PVDF/multi-walled CNTs composite fibres (tensilestrength enhanced from 4.71 to 5.19 cN/dtex) with an evident softness reduction (initial modulus increased from 16.8 to20.52 cN/dtex) as the CNTs content increased from 0 to 1.5 wt%. After the tensional twisting, the initial modulus of thecomposite fibre was reduced by 62.5 % while the fibre strength remained reinforced because biomimetic helix formationimproved the internal structure deformation ability of the fibre.
