        Dynamical seasonal predictability of the Arctic Oscillation using a CGCM

        <P><B>ABSTRACT</B></P><P>The potential dynamical predictability of the winter Arctic Oscillation (AO) is investigated using the ensemble hindcast from the Pusan National University coupled general circulation model (PNU‐CGCM) over the 30‐year period of 1981–2010. The analysis indicates that PNU‐CGCM can not only reproduce the spatial distribution of the AO but also significantly simulate the AO's temporal variability. In addition, the coupled model performs well in terms of predicting the AO's impact on the Northern Hemisphere winter climate. These results reveal the coupled model's potential for dynamical forecasting of the climate over the mid‐latitude to high latitude.</P>

        Nonlinear Anti-swing Control of Underactuated Tower Crane Based on Improved Energy Function

        The control system of tower crane exhibits strong nonlinearity in the process of control execution, which is prone to the problems of inaccurate positioning control of the payload and difficult anti-swing control. Aiming at the problems, this paper proposes a control law based on improved energy coupling analysis for suppressing the payload swing in the tower cranes. A three-dimensional dynamic model of tower crane system with considering friction is established, and an improved energy coupling signal is designed. The coupling relationship of trolley movement and payload swing, jib rotation and payload swing are considered, then a nonlinear anti-swing controller is established in order to reduce the swing. The closed-loop stability of the system with the controller is verified by the Lyapunov method and LaSalle invariance principle, simulations and experimental analyses are performed to verify the controller performance. The control performance of the controller is compared with other classic and typical current control methods, and the proposed controller outperformed other controllers. The anti-swing controller proposed in this paper has accurate positioning, and can achieve precise control when the payload is transported, reaching the set target position in a little time and eliminating residual swing angle. Meanwhile the proposed controller has a good control robustness, which can restore stability in around a very short time when the rope length and payload mass of the system’s inherent property are changed and external interference is added. In addition, when different target position parameters are uncertain, the proposed control law has good robust performance.

        Effects of triflumezopyrim on the reproduction of brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens

        The brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens Stål (Hemiptera: Delphacidae), is a notorious pest on rice in Asia and has evolved serious resistance to traditional chemical insecticides in recent years. Triflumezopyrim, a newly commercialized mesoionic insecticide, exhibited an excellent control effect on sucking insects, including N. lugens. However, the effects of triflumezopyrim on the reproduction of N. lugens have not yet been fully elucidated. In this study, we investigated the impacts of different concentrations of triflumezopyrim (LC 10 , LC 50 and LC 90 ) on the reproduction and the reproduction related genes of N. lugens exposure to the insecticide via systemic and contact route. The results indicated that the preoviposition periods of N. lugens females in the LC 50 and LC 90 triflumezopyrim-treated groups (♀ t × ♂ t) were prolonged in contact toxicity treatment, compared with control (acetone treatment). The fecundities for three pair combinations (♀ c ×♂ t, ♀ t ×♂ c and ♀ t ×♂ t) treated with LC 50 and LC 90 concentrations of triflumezopyrim showed a significant decrease compared to water/acetonetreated control via contact and systemic route. No significant effects of LC 10 triflumezopyrim on preoviposition period and fecundity were found in contact and systemic toxicity treatments. However, the triflumezopyrim did not influence the egg hatchability. By microscope observation, the LC 50 and LC 90 triflumezopyrim impended the ovarian development in females. qRT-PCR analysis showed that the vitellogenin (NlVg) relative expression level of female adults exposed to LC 50 and LC 90 triflumezopyrim decreased by 30.3 – 39.5% in two toxicity treatments. The titers of another reproduction related hormones juvenile hormone III (JH III) in LC 50 and LC 90 triflumezopyrim-treatments were 27.4% and 25.8% lower than control in contact toxicity treatment and 27.08% and 37.18% lower than control in systemic toxicity treatment. In summary, these results suggested that the median lethal and high lethal concentrations of triflumezopyrim inhibited the reproduction and reduced the expression of NlVg and JH III in N. lugens. This study provided a reference for the efficient and scientific utili zation of triflumezopyrim in the field.

        Impact of acid-base conditions on defluoridation by induced crystallization

        Defluoridation by induced crystallization under extreme pH and bicarbonate/carbonate alkalinity of anaquatic environment was researched. At the conditions of initial pH 4–10 and alkalinity of less than9.92 mM, the F could be successfully removed by the induced crystallization of Ca5(PO4)3F on the PRsurface within 1 h. With a prolonged time of 144 h, the F could be also removed by the formation ofCa5(PO4)3F at initial pH 2 and alkalinity 9.92 mM. However, in extreme base aquatic environments, suchas pH 12 or alkalinity 17.12 mM, the F was partially removed by the induced crystallization of FCO3-apatite (Ca9.316Na0.36Mg0.144(PO4)4.8(CO3)1.2F2.48) and the F could be completely removed by adjustingpH to a range of 4–10. Additionally, the safe disposal of spent crystal seed is successfully achieved as anextra benefit.

        Li-Water Battery with Oxygen Dissolved in Water as a Cathode

        <P>In this work, we demonstrate a lithium-water battery that uses oxygen dissolved in water as a cathode, Sr<SUB>0.95</SUB>Ce<SUB>0.05</SUB>CoO<SUB>3-δ</SUB> (SCCO)-copper nanoparticles as an efficient bifunctional catalyst, and with hybrid electrolytes. The SCCO-Cu composite catalyst exhibits an efficient and stable bifunctional catalytic activity, especially for the OER. The round-trip efficiency of the cell with SCCO-Cu nanoparticles catalyst reaches 84.1%, close to that of the 50% Pt/carbon-black catalyst (87.2%). The improved performance of the SCCO-Cu catalyst can be ascribed to the synergetic effect of SCCO and copper. The preliminary results demonstrate that the rechargeable lithium-water battery with oxygen dissolved in water flow can be achieved with high efficient and low cost oxide catalyst. This can be a good candidate for a large stationary energy storage system (ESS) with a low-cost.</P>
