Engendering Christian Mission in Asia : Understanding Women's Works in the History of Mission
WONG Wai Ching Ewha Womans University Press 2003 Asian Journal of Women's Studies(AJWS) Vol.9 No.2
Despite the selfless and devoted service of women, their continuous contributions to the Church and its mission, have been largely neglected and many of their efforts unacknowledged. In the modern history of mission, we find that women in Asia understand their tasks in mission very differently. In fact, they undertook action for the "mission of God" in everything they did in terms of their social involvement or service, mostly via their participation in the struggle for a new society. In actual practice, they reinterpreted Christian mission as a co-mission of humans and God in seeking and communicating the divine truth, and taking on the shared responsibility of working for peace and justice. The understanding of "mission" in the actual day-to-day practices and in people's living and sharing together as people in relation has grounded Christianity in the concrete needs of women in Asia. Placing this understanding within the debate and the transformation of the mission's concept in the history of ecumenism, one might say that women have displayed an integrative "worldly" approach to it.

Taipei Veterans General Hospital, Taipei, Taiwan. Blocking of Cell Proliferation, Cytokines Production and Genes Expression Following Administration of Cordyceps sinensis in the Bronchoalveolar Lavage Fluids Cells. Proceedings of international Symposium on East-West Medicine, Seoul. 44-64, 1999.-Cordyceps sinensis is a major parasitic fungus on larva of Lepidoptera. It is one of the well know fungi used in traditional Chinese medicine for treatment asthma, lung and kideney diseases. Many fungi belonging to the genus Cordyceps have been demonstrated to produce natural products with various biological activities. Reported biological activities of genus cordyceps include:(a)inhibition of DNA and RNA synthesis;(b)enhancement of cell differentiation;(c)restruction of cytoskeleton;(d)inhibition of protein kinase activity;(e)antitumor activity on bladder, colon, lung carcinoma as well as fibroblastoma;(f)inhibition of the infection and revers transciptase activity of human immunodeficiency virus type 1; and(g) inhibition of methylation of nucleic acid. Thus, it is suggested that the extracts of Cordyceps sp. Contain antitumor, antiviral, and many other biological activities. In our previous studies, we proved that C. sinensis contains the antitumor and immunomodulatory agents. In the present studies, effects of C. sinensis on bronchoalveolar lavage fluids(BAL)cells were demonstrated. The crude methanolic extracts of C. sinensis were fractionated into 15 fractions by silica gel column chromatography. Effects of various fraction on BAL cells proliferation and lipopolysaccharide(LPS) stimulated interleukin-1β(IL-8),platelet activating factor(PAF), interleukin-6(IL-6), tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α),and interleukin-8(IL-8) production on BAL cells were determined. The result indicated that the CS-19-22 fraction suppressed BAL cells proliferation activated by LPS. The median inhibitory concentration(IC50) was 6㎍/ml. The CS-19-22 fraction also decreased IL-1β,PAF,IL-6, TNF-αand IL-8 production. The results of revers transcription-polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR) demonstrated that the CS-19-22 fraction did not affect IL-1β,PAF,IL-6, TNF-α,and IL-8 mRNAs expression in BAL cells activated by LPS. By contrast, it inhibited the IL-10 mRNA expression but enhanced IFN-γand IL-12 mRNAs expression in activated BAL cells. Moreover, the CS-19-22 fraction blocked PAF-induced platelet aggregation. It is unlikely that cytotoxicity was involved. Because no cell deths were observable. We hypothesize that inhibitory mechanisms of CS-19-22 on BAL cells proliferation may be related to the impairments of gene expression and production of cytokines in BAL cells. The explanation of C. sinensis antiasthma function may involved the following(1)C.sinenesis contained immunomodulatory agents that stimulated IFN-γand IL-12 expression in TH1cells.(2)Enhanced secretion of IFN-γand IL-12 will inhibit the Tγcells immune responses Ex. Decreasing of IL-6 and IL-10 production.(3) The impairments of cytokines production in TH2 cells suppressed th BAL cells proliferation then more cytokines production Ex.IL-1β,PAF,IL-6,TNF-αand IL-8 in activated BAL cells were decreased. (4)The suppression of TH2cells immune responses will inhibit the growth and differentiation of B cells then IgE production will be decreased. (5)Reduced production of IgE will decreased asthma attack occurring in individuals. However, the results of the present study suggested that C. sinensis may also have acted to treat asthma in part by inhibiting BAL cells proliferation and cytokine gene expression and production. Future, experiments with treatment of animals with asthma with C. sinensis will be necessary to defined whether C. sinensis can reduce asthma injury. Plans are underway for the isolation of pure principal growth inhibitors and their mechanisms of action are subjected for further study.

Fallen and decomposing woody debris are conspicuous features of the forest floor in many natural forests. They provide habitats for plants, animals, and a diversity of microorganism. Seeds of Alus hirsuta and Alus rubra were sown in leach tubes containing Douglas-fir woody debris of decay class III-V. In greenhouse studies, wood samples induced effective nodule formation in Alus hirsuta and A. rubra, indicating that the fallen trees contained infections and effective Frankia. Alder on sterilized wood substrates grew poorly and did not nodulate. The preserve of infective Frankia in dead, fallen trees suggests that woody debris is a source of symbiotic nitrogen-fixing organism. The results suggest that coarse woody debris create and maintain structural and biological diversity that contributes to forest long-term productivity. Key words : woody debris, Alus hirsute, A. rubra, Frankia, biological diversity long-term productivity

This study aims to research ell the actual state of the ways that the aged people in Jinju city use intentionally or unintentionally to maintain their health. The aged people selected randomly for this study are 300 aged men and 300 aged women who are all more than 65 years old, Many of these aged people, 28.3% of the men and 38.35 of the women, are now retired, and the people who still have means of making a living engage in independent occupations such as agriculture, commerce and industry. The results of this study are summed up as follows : 1. As for their staple foods, the majority of them eat mixed food of rice and barley and the rest eat rice or minorgrain mixed rice. As subsidiary foods, vegetables are the most common side dishes, ailed fish, meat, and sea weeds are taken by the minority of them. 2. Most of them(93.9%) frequently or occasionally eat special health foods to maintain their health, The most common health food turned out to be honey. 3. The majority of them refrain from drinking and smoking. 4. Many of them(78.3%) of them men and(66.7%) of the women take light exercises such as climbing auld walking. 5. The majority of them undergo regular or occasional medical examinations. As medical treatments, many of them (62.5%) take Chinese, remedies, some of them (24.2%) western remedies and the others(13,3%) folk remedies. 6. Many of them(78.3%) feel subjective symptoms about somegeriatric diseases such as neuralgia, hypertension and cough. 7. Their subjective judgements of their secrets of health and longitivity attach more importance to physical exercises than to nourishing meals. 8. Most of them want to be served with appropriate rest places, special medical facilities, health consultations, etc. This means that they want to be benefited by concrete and substantial welfare work. All these results reveal that 81ea1th and longitivity of the aged people are maintained by necessary cares and efforts, not by accident nor by apathy. It is thus highly desired that manly studies and enligtenments about this problem be carried out in future.

Idiopathic gingival hyperplasia is a rare condition of undetermined etiology. The enlargement is usually associated with the emergence of the teeth into the oral cavity and may regress after extraction. The enlarged gingiva may be primarily attributed to hyperplasia of the subepithelial layer that is relatively avascular and consists of densely arranged collagen bundles and numerous fibroblasts. The recommended time for treatment is after completion of eruption of permanent teeth. But the most important is the patient's psychological and esthetic needs. Lately, Schluger has proposed modified gingivectomy procedure with horizontal, internal beveled incision for thinning of the flap resulting in less pain and bleeding after treatment, minimal opportunity of infection. The purpose of this report is to document a case of 8-year-old girl who had registered in Dept. of Pediatric Dentistry of Seoul National University dental hospital for treatment of her gingival hyperplasia and delayed tooth eruption.
