• RBF-POD reduced-order modeling of DNA molecules under stretching and bending

        Lee, Chung-Hao,Chen, Jiun-Shyan Techno-Press 2013 Interaction and multiscale mechanics Vol.6 No.4

Molecular dynamics (MD) systems are highly nonlinear and nonlocal, and the conventional model order reduction methods are ineffective for MD systems. The RBF-POD method (Lee and Chen, 2013) employed a radial basis function (RBF) approximated potential energies and inter-atomic forces of MD systems under the framework of the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) method for the reduced-order modeling of MD systems. In this work, we focus on the numerical procedures of the RBF-POD method and demonstrate how to apply this approach to the modeling of ds-DNA molecules under stretching and bending conditions.

      • Three-Dimensional Hierarchical Nanofibrous Collagen Scaffold Fabricated Using Fibrillated Collagen and Pluronic F-127 for Regenerating Bone Tissue

Lee, JiUn,Kim, GeunHyung American Chemical Society 2018 ACS APPLIED MATERIALS & INTERFACES Vol.10 No.42

It is well known that a nanoscale fibrous structure can provide a unique stage for encouraging reasonable cell activities including attachment and proliferation owing to its similar topological structure to the extracellular matrix. Hence, the structure has been widely applied in tissue regeneration. Type-I collagen has been typically used as a typical tissue regenerative material owing to its biocompatibility and abundance, although it has potential for antigenicity. In particular, collagen has been fabricated in two different forms, porous spongy and nanofibers. However, although the structures provided outstanding cellular activities, they exhibit disadvantages such as low cell migration capabilities in a spongy scaffold owing to the low degree of interconnected macropores and low processability in fabricating three-dimensional (3D) structures in an electrospun collagen scaffold. Hence, the fabrication of 3D nanofibrous collagen structures with interconnected macropores can be extremely challenging. In this work, we developed a 3D collagen scaffold consisting of multilayered nanofibrous struts fabricated using a 3D printing process and pluronic F-127 (PF-127), which is a thermoreversible polymer. After optimizing various processing conditions, we successfully achieved the 3D nanofibrous collagen mesh structure with fully interconnected macropores. A 3D-printed collagen scaffold that was fabricated using a low-temperature printing process was applied as a control. Through various analyses using physical properties (surface morphology, fibronectin absorption, mechanical properties, etc.) and cell activities using preosteoblasts (MC3T3-E1), we are convinced that the newly designed 3D nanofibrous collagen scaffold can be a new promising scaffold for bone tissue engineering.
[FIG OMISSION]

Development of a tannic acid cross-linking process for obtaining 3D porous cell-laden collagen structure

Lee, JiUn,Yeo, Miji,Kim, WonJin,Koo, YoungWon,Kim, Geun Hyung Elsevier 2018 INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF BIOLOGICAL MACROMOLECULES Vol.110 No.-

Abstract

Cell-printing is an emerging technique that enables to build a customized structure using biomaterials and living cells for various biomedical applications. In many biomaterials, alginate has been widely used for rapid gelation, low cost, and relatively high processability. However, biocompatibilities enhancing cell adhesion and proliferation were limited, so that, to overcome this problem, an outstanding alternative, collagen, has been extensively investigated. Many factors remain to be proven for cell-printing applications, such as printability, physical sustainability after printing, and applicability of in vitro cell culture. This study proposes a cell-laden collagen scaffold fabricated via cell-printing and tannic acid (TA) crosslinking process. The effects of the crosslinking agent (0–3wt% TA) in the cell-laden collagen scaffolds on physical properties and cellular activities using preosteoblasts (MC3T3-E1) were presented. Compared to the cell-laden collagen scaffold without TA crosslinking, the scaffold with TA crosslinking was significantly enhanced in mechanical properties, while reasonable cellular activities were observed. Concisely, this study introduces the possibility of a cell-printing process using collagen and TA crosslinking and in vitro cell culture for tissue regeneration.

Vol.14 No.1

This article explores pedagogical experiments that demonstrate a renewed utility for art education in the future. I will discuss the philosopher Nelson Goodman’s Project Zero, housed at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education. Project Zero is a long-term study of cognitive effects and scholastic outcomes of greater student exposure to art and philosophical methods in general schooling. Continuing this project into the second generation, Howard Gardener’s cognitive psychology research studies the effects of a wide exposure to art education and interdisciplinary education. Project Zero is one major example how the philosophical spirit is possible in art education even in our digital ‘app generation.’ I will explore associated researcher Jessica Davis and her books “Why Our Schools Need the Arts” and “Why Our High Schools Need the Arts.” In general, I examine the question how art and philosophical education connects to improved empathetic and creative abilities for those in our new digital society. Finally, I argue art education is more important than before due to the cultural needs for greater creative thinking, imagination and problem solving. Project Zero embraces these curricular ideas through this creative education, and so it is a useful alternative model to review for a better connection between school and society.

Vol.15 No.1

Mass culture is very important to mainstream culture in our era. Previous arguments about mass culture and mass art argued that `mass art` was entirely the same as `popular art.` I am challenging this formulation due to recent artistic developments, while I accept it for the past. What has changed? There is a quality about current mass art that is less studied if such a formulation is accepted. I think that the difference between mass art and popular culture is that mass art in our current era has become highly dependent upon digital mediation through developments in science and technology whereas popular culture loses this important new nuance. I draw upon different aesthetic philosophers to build this viewpoint. From Noel Carroll, I accept his criticism of others that the increasing dependence on science and technological mediation in our basic culture can be a positive or beneficial aspect, instead of previous philosophers viewing such developments more negatively. Second, drawing on Richard Schusterman`s Pragmatist Aesthetics which holds important the interaction of life and art, this is a way to bring a greater understanding that lived technology and science have to be integrated into our sense of a mass art instead of categorized as outside of culture and art in our digital era. For example, the digital aspects of the phenomenon of Korean `k-pop` mass art is hard philosophically to analyze in its aesthetics or its global impact without a deep appreciation of its highly technological and mediated aspects for building the culture of mass art through internet devices worldwide. So I would consider definitions of science and technology now can be considered very important material aspects of mass art, while in the term popular culture this is unaddressed. First, I will use Schusterman`s Pragmatist Aesthetics for how we can connect art and life. Second, this is a foundation for analysing a digital mass art that draws on previous thinkers though makes a new statement from them.

Vol.25 No.6

The COVID-19 epidemic brought unprecedented remote learning in Korean Early Childhood Educational institutions. This situation evoked the needs for the new teaching methods in early childhood classroom utilizing digital tools. This study analyzes characteristics of social networking applications which have been used in early childhood educational settings as a communication tool between parents and educators. Therefore, the possibility of using an educational social networking application as an interaction tool among child, parents, and educators and as an educational tool to foster multimodal literacy learning for children are explored. To serve this purpose, four educational social networking applications (Flipgrid, SEESAW, Classting, Kids Note) were analyzed by their safety features, interfaces, and interactions. The results implied following suggestions. First, all educational social networking applications are in consideration of securing privacy while only two applications restrict the exposure of advertisements. Second, the interface analysis suggested that educational social networking applications considering children as users could be utilized as fine tools for multimodal literacy education. Third, this study recognized the possibility that educational social networking applications, which consider not only communication between parents and teachers but also interactions with and among children, could be used as educational tools that connect families and early childhood institutions. These results suggest that educational social networking applications can be utilized in remote learning situations.
