      • Association between Physical Activity and Cognitive Dysfunction in the Korean: A Cross-sectional Study

        OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the association of physical activity and cognitive function in the Korean population. METHODS: This study included 9,177 adults aged 45 years and older who completed the baseline survey of the Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing. Physical activity was assessed using a questionnaire. Cognitive function was assessed using the Mini Mental Status Evaluation. RESULTS: The odds ratio for the cognitive dysfunction was significantly and linearly decreased according to the levels of physical activity independent of confounding factors. We also found consistent results when investigated these associations using stratified model by sex and age groups. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that physical activity is associated with lower risk of cognitive dysfunction in the middle-aged and older Korean adults.

        정상 한국인에서 CRH, GHRH와 TRH를 이용한 복합뇌하수체 자극시험에 대한 성별 연령별 반응

        연구배경: 인슐린을 대신하여 부신피질 자극호르몬 방출호르몬 (CRH)과 성장호르몬 방출호르몬 (GHRH)으로 복합뇌하수체 자극검사가 시행되고 있으나, 한국인에 있어서 정상 반응치에 관한 연구가 없고, 각각의 자극 호르몬의 연령이나 성별에 대한 반응의 차이는 보고되었지만 복합 자극검사에서의 연령별 성별 차이가 확립되지 않아 이를 알아보고자 본 연구를 시행하였다. 방법: 정상인 50대 남자 7명, 20대 남자 7명과 50대 여자 7명, 20대 여자 7명을 대상으로 CRH 100㎍,GnRH 100㎍, GHRH 100㎍, TRH 200㎍을 순서대로 동시에 정맥주사한 후 ACTH, GH, TSH, PRL, LH, FSH를 15∼30분 간격으로 2시간 동안 측정하였다. 결과: 1) TSH, PRL, LH의 분비 정도는 20대 남성과 50대 남성간의 유의한 차이가 관찰되지 않았으나, ACTH와 FSH는 50대 남성에서, GH는 20대 남성에서 통계학적으로 유의하게 높게 나타났다. 2) 20대 여성과 50대 여성을 비교했을 때, FSH만 50대 여성에서 통계학적으로 유의하게 높았고, 나머지 호르몬들의 결과에서는 통계학적으로 유의한 차이는 없었다. 3) 50대군에서 GH와 LH는 남녀간의 유의한 차이를 보이지 않았으나, ACTH는 남성에서 높게 나타났으며, Prolactin, FSH, TSH는 여성에서 통계학적으로 의미 있게 높았다. 결론: 연령, 성별과 월경주기 등에 따른 한국인의 복합뇌하수체 반응에 관한 더 자세한 연구가 요망된다. Backgroud: It has been already known that each trophic hormone in combined pituitary responsiveness according to gender and age brings about variable response, but in Korea, there has been no actual data. In this study, in order to assess the pituitary responsiveness, a combined pituitary stimulation test was performed in Korean subjects with the variation in CRH, GHRH, GnRH, and TRH according to their age and gender. Were these the variables that were changed according to age and gender? Clarify that. Also, it might be good to write out the abbreviations.) Method: Fourteen physically and mentally healthy male subjects and fourteen female subjects, also physically and mentally healthy, underwent the combined anterior pituitary stimulation test by CRH, GHRH, LHRH, and TRH. Each gender group was divided further into young (meanSE; male: 231, female: 221) and old (mean; male: 513, female: 522) groups. Results: There were significant differences between the gender and age groups. The Peak GH level and maximal GH increment were significantly increased in young men compared to old men. The Peak ACTH level and maximal ACTH increment were significantly increased in old men as opposed to young men. The Peak PRL level, maximal PRL increment, Peak TSH level, and maximal TSH increment were significantly increased in old women compared to old men. The Peak FSH level was significantly increased in the two old groups compared to the young groups, which showed independence in gender, and the maximal FSH increment was significantly increased in old men when compared with the young men. Conclusion: These results show that in order to for accurate interpretation of the response from the combined pituitary stimulation test, it is necessary to consider age and gender of the subjects. We suggest response values of the combined pituitary stimulation test in terms of age and gender in healthy Korean subjects (J Kor Soc Endocrinol 19:24∼32, 2004).

      • Prospective Association of Handgrip Strength with Risk of New-Onset Cognitive Dysfunction in Korean Adults: A 6-Year National Cohort Study

        <P>Dementia is one of the priority public health problems in the older population, and the number of people with dementia is steadily increasing. The longitudinal association of muscle strength with risk of new-onset cognitive dysfunction in a general population including middle and older adults remains unknown. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of low muscle strength on risk for new-onset cognitive dysfunction over 6 years using a large nationwide sample of cognitively healthy adults. Study participants included 6,435 middle and older adults (33,554 person-years of follow-up), using data from the Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing 2006-2012. Muscular strength was measured using the maximum handgrip strength of each participant as an index of muscle quality. Low muscle strength was defined as one standard deviation below the mean using the handgrip strength index based on the study population. Cognitive function was evaluated using the Mini-Mental Status Evaluation. The hazard ratio (HR) for cognitive dysfunction significantly and linearly increased according to muscle strength status independent of potential confounding factors (HR: 1.36, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.18-1.56 for low vs. normal-high group). Using stratified analyses, a significant association between muscle strength status and risk of cognitive impairment was observed in those with low physical activity, but not those with high physical activity. We show that handgrip strength is associated with increased risk of new-onset cognitive dysfunction over 6 years of follow-up in cognitively healthy middle aged and older adults at baseline.</P>

        제품 만족도에 영향을 주는 사용자 감성 분석

        최근 들어 사용자 경험에 대한 관심과 중요성이 많이 부각되면서 이와 관련된 많은 연구들이 진행되고 있다. 사용자가 제품을 사용하면서 느끼는 만족이나 감성을 사용자 경험이라고 한다면, 이러한 사용자 경험이 제품 사용 후 해당 제품에 대한 만족도에는 어떤 영향을 미칠 것인가? 본 연구에서는 사용자가 제품을 사용하면서 느꼈던 감성과 해당 제품에 대한 만족도 및 향후 제품 구매 시 현재 사용 중인 제품의 제조사와 동일한 회사의 제품을 구매하고 싶은 지 여부와의 관계를 알아보기 위하여 실험을 진행하였다. 또한 현재 사용 중인 제품에 대한 만족도와 향후 제품 구매 시 현재 사용 중인 제품의 제조사와 동일한 회사의 제품을 구매하고 싶은 지 여부와의 관계를 검토해 보았다. 연구 결과 제품을 사용하면서 느끼는 6가지 대표감성 중에서 제품의 사용성이나 실용적인 측면에서의 만족스러운 감성인 ‘사용적 만족성’과 제품 사용 중 느끼는 불편하거나 불쾌한 감성인 ‘불편성’이 해당 제품에 대한 만족도와 향후 제품 구매 시 현재 사용 중인 제품의 제조사와 동일한 회사의 제품을 구매하고 싶은 지 여부에 가장 크게 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 이는 제품 디자인 시 제품의 외관, 즉 겉모양에서 느끼는 매력에만 집중할 것이 아니라 제품을 쉽고 효과적으로 사용할 수 있게 하는 사용성, 즉 사용자로 하여금 제품의 기능을 얼마나 잘 사용할 수 있게 하느냐에 대한 문제 또한 신중하게 고려해야 함을 시사해 준다. 또한 제품의 만족도가 재구매 의도에 정(正)의 영향을 미친다는 기존의 선행연구들과 마찬가지로 본 연구에서도 현재 사용 중인 제품에 대한 만족도가 높을수록 향후 해당 제품 구매 시 현재 사용 중인 제품의 제조사와 동일한 회사의 제품을 구매할 가능성이 높다는 결과를 도출할 수 있었다. Due to recent interest in user experience and its significance, much research surrounding this theme is now being conducted. If user experience is defined as the emotions and satisfaction the user feels while using the product, how much of such experience will contribute to the overall satisfaction of using the product? In this research, I investigated user experience during usage of a product and the satisfaction acquired by it, as well as the relationship between satisfaction of having used a product and whether the user would be more likely to purchase another product from the same company. I found that amongst the six representative user emotions, two of them correlated the most. First, satisfaction in usability (emotions that are conceived by satisfaction from usage or the practicality of the product); and second, in uncomfortableness or unpleasant emotions expressed due to product usage. The above two factors were found to be of the most influence concerning satisfaction of the product as well as their preferability towards purchasing an item from the same company in the future. The significance of this finding is that aside from focussing on the attractiveness of the product’s exteriors and design, one should be concerned on the ease of usage and effectiveness as well as usability of the product, all of which contribute to how efficiently a consumer will utilize the product. Furthermore, in agreement with previous research concerning the correlation between satisfaction of a product and positive perspective on consecutive purchases, the result of this study shows that the more satisfaction consumers feel after using a product, the more likely they are to purchase additional merchandises from the same company which manufactured the original product.

        Genome-Wide Analysis of DNA Methylation before- and after Exercise in the Thoroughbred Horse with MeDIP-Seq

        Athletic performance is an important criteria used for the selection of superior horses. However, little is known about exercise-related epigenetic processes in the horse. DNA methylation is a key mechanism for regulating gene expression in response to environmental changes. We carried out comparative genomic analysis of genome-wide DNA methylation profiles in the blood samples of two different thoroughbred horses before and after exercise by methylated-DNA immunoprecipitation sequencing (MeDIP-Seq). Differentially methylated regions (DMRs) in the pre-and post-exercise blood samples of superior and inferior horses were identified. Exercise altered the methylation patterns. After 30 min of exercise, 596 genes were hypomethy-lated and 715 genes were hypermethylated in the superior horse, whereas in the inferior horse, 868 genes were hypomethylated and 794 genes were hypermethylated. These genes were analyzed based on gene ontology (GO) annotations and the exercise-related pathway patterns in the two horses were compared. After exercise, gene regions related to cell division and adhesion were hypermethylated in the superior horse, whereas regions related to cell signaling and transport were hypermethylated in the inferior horse. Analysis of the distribution of methylated CpG islands confirmed the hypomethylation in the gene-body methylation regions after exercise. The methylation patterns of transposable elements also changed after exercise. Long interspersed nuclear elements (LINEs) showed abundance of DMRs. Collectively, our results serve as a basis to study exercise-based reprogramming of epigenetic traits.

        The Comparison of Usability Testing Methods

        제품의 사용성이 중요해짐에 따라 사용성을 평가하거나 측정하기 위한 기법에 대한 관심이 점점 높아지고 있다. 사용성 평가는 사용자 요구 분석에서 제품 출하에 이르는 디자인 프로세스의 모든 단계에서 수행하고 있으며, 최근 20여 년간 수많은 사용성 평가 방법들이 개발되었다. 하지만 다양한 사용성 평가 방법 중에서 어떤 것을 사용하는 것이 가장 효과적인 지에 대해서는 아직도 많은 논란의 여지가 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 디자인 프로세스 단계와 평가를 수행하는 이유에 따라서 사용성 평가 방법들을 비교해 보았다. 디자인 프로세스 각 단계별로 사용되는 모든 사용성 평가 방법들을 질문 방법, 감정 방법, 그리고 검증 방법으로 분류하여 비교하였다. 결과적으로, 제품 개발의 최종 단계에 제품을 평가하던 것에서 초기 단계, 그리고 개발 프로세스 전반에 걸쳐 평가하는 것으로 바뀌고 있다. 또한 어떤 이유에서든 여러 방법 들을 사용할 수 있다. 정확한 선택은 평가 요소, 그리고 시간, 기술, 장비, 사용자에의 접근 등의 고려사항에 따라 달라진다. 많은 경우, 제품의 사용성에 대한 더 나은 이해를 위해 둘 이상의 방법들을 통해 서로 다른 데이터를 검토하기도 한다. 또한 일반적으로 특정한 평가 상황에 맞는 방법을 채택하는 것이 필요하다. Particularly, the concept of usability has become highly valued in the area of information appliances and software where users’ output is mainly mental. As the usability of a product is more important, the comparative evaluation of these usability testing methods get more attention and become a critical issue. There are many disagreement and discussion to determine which methods are more effective among various usability testing methods. The aim of this paper is to compare various methods of usability testing conducted in every stage of design process. In this paper, several methods of usability testing were categorized and compared according to some views. The result of this study suggests that there is a shift from testing products at the end of a project towards early and continuous usability testing in the development process and for almost all reasons for doing tests, several methods could be used. The exact choice of usability testing methods would depend not only on the question to be answered but also on logistical factors.

        Stability Enhancement of Reformate-Fueled, Low-Temperature Solid Oxide Fuel Cell with Nickel Thin-Film Anode by Water Bubbling

        The dry reformate and wet reformate operations of solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) with 200 nm-thick, nanoporous Ni thin-film anode were investigated in terms of power performance at 500°C. The initial power density of the SOFC fueled with dry reformate (H2 75%, CO 10%, CO2 10%, CH4 5%) was 5% lower than that of the SOFC fueled with H2, which was almost similar to that of the SOFC fueled with wet reformate humidified by water bubbling at room temperature. The reduction rate in power density of the SOFC fueled with the dry reformate was as high as 6%/hr; the reduction rate in power density of the SOFC fueled with the wet reformate was decreased by 55% through carbon poisoning alleviation of the Ni thin-film anode.
