Background Silica dioxide nanoparticles (SiONPs) have been used for various medical applications, including therapeutics and imaging, and the use of SiONPs has increased gradually over the years. However, despite an increase in the use of SiONPs, not much is known about mechanism of action of SiONPs and their pulmonary toxicity. Objective The present study investigated the pulmonary toxicity of SiONPs and explored the underlying mechanism of action, primarily focusing on thioredoxin-interacting protein (TXNIP)/NOD-like receptor pyrin domain-containing 3 (NLRP3) in SiONPs-treated mice. We investigated the toxic effects of SiONPs in the lung of BALB/c mice administered 5, 10, and 20 mg/kg SiONPs for 3 days. Results Exposure to SiONPs markedly increased inflammatory cell counts, including those of neutrophils and macrophages, and levels of inflammatory mediators, such as interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor-α in a dose-dependent manner in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid. Moreover, the inflammation was verified upon histopathological analysis. In addition, exposure to SiONPs increased the expression of TXNIP in a dose-dependent manner and, in turn, upregulated NLRP3 inflammasome proteins, which subsequently induced IL-1β production. Conclusion Collectively, exposure to SiONPs induced inflammation in the lungs of mice, which resulted in the activation of IL-1β production via the TXNIP-NLRP3 axis. Our results provide useful information on the pulmonary toxicity induced by SiONPs and provide insights into the underlying mechanism of action.

Ultrasonic NDE of composite laminates is usually analyzed on the backwall echoes of the specimen. In the inspection of actual composite structures, the back surface of the part was curved or contained complex geometry and did not provide a usable backwall echo. In this work, a one-sided pitch-catch setup was used in the detection and evaluation of flaws and material anomalies in solid composite laminates. Two miniature potted Rayleigh wave transducers (for generating surface waves in contact mode on steel) were joined head-to-head and used in the pitch-catch mode on the surface of composites. The pitch-catch signal was found to be more sensitive than normal incidence backwall echo of longitudinal wave to fiber orientation of the CFRP composites, including low level porosity, ply waviness, and cracks.
Carcinoembryonic Antigen Level Can be Overestimated in Metabolic Syndrome

<P>Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) levels can be affected by many factors and metabolic syndrome is also a candidate. This study examined the relationship between CEA levels and metabolic syndrome using the data of 32,897 healthy Koreans. Fecal occult blood tests were also performed. Subjects with colorectal carcinoma were excluded. Subjects were classified by their smoking status, metabolic syndrome and its components. Prevalence of metabolic syndrome and its all components showed a significant increase according to the quartile of serum CEA concentration (<I>P</I> < 0.001). Increased numbers of metabolic syndrome components showed a positive association with CEA levels (<I>P</I>-trend < 0.001). The odds ratios for the highest CEA quartile vs the lowest serum CEA quartile significantly increased in the presence of metabolic syndrome and its components. After adjusting for age, gender and smoking status, metabolic syndrome, low high density lipoprotein cholesterol and elevated blood pressure had higher odds ratios (OR) of the highest CEA quartile compared with the lowest serum CEA quartile (OR = 1.125, 95% CI = 1.030 to 1.222, <I>P</I> = 0.009; OR = 1.296, 95% CI = 1.195 to 1.405, <I>P</I> < 0.001; OR = 1.334, 95% CI = 1.229 to 1.448, <I>P</I> < 0.001, respectively). These results indicate that metabolic syndrome is associated with CEA value, which may lead to a misunderstanding of the CEA levels.</P>

Composite wood materials are very sensitive to water and inspection without any coupling medium of a liquid is really needed to wood materials due to the permeation of coupling medium such as water. However, air-coupled ultrasound has obvious advantages over water-coupled experimentation compared with conventional C-scanner. In this work, it is desirable to perform contact-less nondestructive evaluation to assess wood material homogeneity. A wood material was nondestructively characterized with non-contact and contact modes to measure ultrasonic velocity using automated data acquisition software. We have utilized a proposed peak-delay measurement method. Also through transmission mode was performed because of the main limitation for air-coupled transducers, which is the acoustic impedance mismatch between most materials and air. The variation of ultrasonic velocity was found to be somewhat difference due to air-coupled limitations over conventional scan images. However, conventional C-scan images are well agreed with increasing the resin-infiltrated time as expected. Finally, we have developed a measurement system of an ultrasonic velocity based on data acquisition software for obtaining ultrasonic quantitative data for correlation with C-scan images.
Exposure to China dust exacerbates testicular toxicity induced by cyclophosphamide in mice

This study investigated the potential effects of China dust (CD) exposure on cyclophosphamide (CP)-induced testicular toxicity in mice, focusing on spermatogenesis and oxidative damage. CP treatment reduced testicular and epididymal weight and sperm motility and enhanced sperm abnormality. Histopathological examination presented various morphological alterations in the testis, including increased exfoliation of spermatogenic cells, degeneration of early spermatogenic cells, vacuolation of Sertoli cells, a decreased number of spermatogonia/spermatocytes/spermatids, along with a high number of apoptotic cells. In addition, the testis exhibited reduced glutathione (GSH) levels and glutathione reductase (GR) activity and enhanced malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration. Meanwhile, CD exposure exacerbated testicular histopathological alterations induced by CP. CD exposure also aggravated oxidative damage by increasing the lipid peroxidative product MDA and decreasing GSH levels and antioxidant enzyme activities in the testis. These results suggest that CD exposure exacerbates CP-induced testicular toxicity in mice, which might be attributed to the induction of lipid peroxidation and reduced antioxidant activity.
Impact of illiteracy on depression symptomatology in community-dwelling older adults

<B>Abstract</B><B>Background:</B><P>In many countries, illiteracy rates among aged people are quite high. However, only few studies have specifically investigated the impact of illiteracy on depression.</P><B>Methods:</B><P>Data for 1,890 elderly individuals (aged ≥65 years) were obtained from a nationwide dementia epidemiological study conducted in South Korea. Based on their reading ability, the participants were divided into three groups: totally illiterate, partially illiterate, and literate. The Korean version of the Geriatric Depression Scale - Short Form (SGDS-K) was used to detect depression (cut-off score = 8). Multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to assess the association between illiteracy and depression. To explore clinical features of depression in illiterate people, we performed logistic regression to calculate odds ratios of positive responses (or negative responses to reverse-coded items) for each SGDS-K item using literate individuals as the reference group.</P><B>Results:</B><P>Totally illiterate participants had 2.41 times the odds and partially illiterate individuals had 1.59 times the odds of being depressed compared with literate participants after controlling for other variables. Compared with literate individuals, illiterate elderly persons were at increased odds for responding negatively to the majority of SGDS-K items, including “having memory problems,” “others are better off than me,” and “feeling worthless” even after controlling for various demographic and clinical factors.</P><B>Conclusions:</B><P>Illiteracy in elderly individuals was associated with a higher rate and increased severity of depression. Illiteracy negatively affected depression symptomatology, especially factors associated with self-esteem. Therefore, clinicians should carefully monitor for the presence of depression in illiterate elderly adults.</P>
