        Stress Corrosion Cracking of Alloy 600 in an Aqueous Solution Containing Lead Oxide

        The stress corrosion cracking (SCC) behavior of Alloy 600 was studied in aqueous solutions containing lead. Electrochemical polarization and current transient experiments were performed at 315 °C in a 40% sodium hydroxide solution to assess the effect of lead on a passive film formed on Alloy 600. The influences of the alloy microstructure and the addition of an inhibitor to the environments on lead-induced SCC were investigated using C-ring and slow strain-rate tensile (SSRT) tests in demineralized high-purity water and caustic solutions containing PbO at 315 °C. The surface films on Alloy 600 were examined using Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDXS). The PbO markedly accelerated SCC of Alloy 600 in the caustic solution and the high-purity water at 315 °C. The addition of nickel boride (NiB)or cerium boride (CeB6) to the test solutions decreased the susceptibility of Alloy 600 to SCC. Thermally treated Alloy 600 (Alloy 600 TT) tended to crack in a transgranular mode, while the solution-annealed Alloy 600 (Alloy 600 SA) tended to crack in an intergranular mode in water containing PbO.

        A greenhouse gas emission reduction effect of “Low-Carbon Products” which are the second scheme of Korean carbon footprint labeling has been analyzed from 2011 to 2015 in this study. The reduction effect is calculated by subtracting the low carbon product from the first carbon emission which shows the reduced emission value of product and then multiplying by the sales of the products. The total number of the low-carbon products is 231 and its estimated reducing GHG effect totals 3.44 Mt CO2-eq. This equals to an annual absorption of approximately 520 million 30 year old pine trees and an annual emission of about 1.43 million vehicles. In addition, it is evaluated that the cost effectiveness of a low carbon product labeling program is more than 50 times than that of carbon trading schemes in Korea. Both the government and companies should develope and apply various policies to invigorate the program of low carbon products.

        Leak behavior of SCC degraded steam generator tubings of nuclear power plant

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>A forced outage due to a steam generator tube leak in a Korean nuclear power plant has been reported <ce:cross-ref refid='bib3'>[Kim, J.S., Hwang, S.S., et al., 1999. KAERI Internal Report (Korean). Destructive analysis on pulled tubes from Ulchin unit 1. Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute]</ce:cross-ref>. Primary water stress corrosion cracking has occurred in many tubes in the plant, and they were repaired using sleeves or plugs. In order to develop proper repair criteria, it is necessary to understand the leak behavior of the tubes containing stress corrosion cracks. Cracked specimens were prepared using a room temperature cracking technique, and the leak rates and burst pressures of the degraded tubes were determined both at room temperature and at a high temperature. Some tubes with 100% through wall cracks did not show a leakage at 10.8MPa, which is the typical pressure difference of the pressurized water reactors (PWRs) during a normal operation. In some tests, the leak rates of the tubes increased with time at a constant pressure. In a high temperature pressure test at 282°C one specimen showed a very small leakage at 18.6MPa, which stopped after a small increase in the test pressure. Because stress corrosion cracks can develop at relatively low stresses, even 100% through wall cracks can be so tight that they will not leak at a normal operating pressure.</P>

        무당거미에서 분리한 Serratia proteamaculans에서 분비되는 단백질분해효소의 생화학적 특성

        거미의 중장에서 분리한 장내 세균인 Serratia proteamaculans는 우유 단백질 배지상에서 투명환을 형성하는 것으로 보아 세포 외로 분비되는 단백질 분해효소를 생산함을 알 수 있었다. Zymogram을 사용한 단백질 분획의 활성 염색 실험에서 세포 외로 분비된 분자량 52 KD의 단백질이 높은 단백질분해 활성을 가진 것으로 추정되었다. 이 단백질 분해효소의 배양 상등액을 여과, 이온교환, 크로마토그래피 등의 방법을 사용하여 순수 정제하였다. 정제된 단백질 분해 효소는 pH 6.0과 10.0사이와 넓은 온도범위에서 상대적으로 높은 활성을 나타내었다. 1,10-phenanthroline과 EDTA등의 단백질분해효소 저해제를 처리하였을 때 단백질 분해 활성이 강하게 억제되며 $Zn^{2+}$이나 $Ca^{2+}$ 이온의 존재에 의해 단백질 분해효소의 활성이 증가되는 것으로 보아 이 효소가 금속성 단백질 분해효소임을 알 수 있었다. Serratia proteamaculans isolated from the midgut of a spider formed big halos around the bacterial colonies, indicating that the bacterial strain produces an extracellular protease. Activity staining of the extracellular pro­tein fractions using zymogram also demonstrated that the major protein with an estimated molecular mass of 52 kDa contained a high proteolytic activity. The protease was purified to near electrophoretic homogeneity from the culture supernatant after filtration and ion exchange and size exclusion chromatography. The purified enzyme had a relatively high proteolytic activity between pH 6.0 and 10.0 and at broad temperature range. The proteolytic activity of the enzyme was not inhibited by phenylmethylsulfonyl fluoride but strongly inhibited by 1, 10-phenanthroline and EDTA. The activity also was dependent on the presence of $Ca^{++}\;and\;Zn^{++}$ ions. These observations indicate that the enzyme is a metalloprotease.
