Adzuki bean is sensitive to waterlogging stress. The overall study on the waterlogging stress is limited comparing to the study on the drought and any environmental stress. Therefore, the present study was conducted to investigate the changes in growth characteristics and the expression patterns of proteins at the 5-leaf stage periods of adzuki bean. The domestic cultivar, Arari (Miryang No. 8) was used to test the waterlogging stress. In the waterlogging treatment for 3 days, the plant height showed slightly decrease in the treatment at 3 days of waterlogging, but root fresh weight showed significantly changes at 3 days of the waterlogging treatment. Chlorophyll contents showed also significantly different at 3 days of waterlogging treatment compared to control the plants. The waterlogging stress gradually influenced the growth differences between the control and the treatment respectively. More than 350 pro- tein spots were identified on 2-D gels using an image analysis. Moreover, a total of 28 proteins were analyzed using LTQ-FT-ICR MS. Among these 28 proteins, a total of 18 proteins were up-regulated, and 10 proteins were down-regulated under waterlogging treatment. According to biological process, the most of the proteins were found to be involved in carbohydrate metabolism. Regarding the subcellular local- ization, most of the proteins were localized into chloroplasts in 5-leaf stage.

While use of mass rearing systems improved poultry production, chances of exposing to contagious diseases have been increased, making flocks more vulnerable to diseases. Diseases of interest which affects egg production adversely include Low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI), Infectious bronchitis (IB), Avian meta-pneumoviral infection (aMPV) and Egg drop syndrome'76 (EDS'76). This report collected and analyzed 5,385 serum samples, which were collected from 1,330 different chicken flock, provided by Chungbuk National University, Avian Disease Laboratory at 2009. Serums were analyzed based on rearing stages; 0~1.3weeks (wks) (maternal antibody period), >1.3~3 wks (starting period), >3~10 wks (growing period), >10~22 wks (developing period), >22~40 wks (peak laying period), >40~60 wks (late laying period) and over 60 wks (post-molting period). Results showed the 99.7% of the tested flocks were immunized against ND and73.8%, 97.1%, 78,2% and 78% of the flocks were immunized against other 4 agents (LPAI, IB, EDS'76, aMPV). Maternal antibody was transferred to enough quantity for NDV. Generally, antibody titers which were developed at 22 weeks were stabilized permanently for life. In case of IB and aMPV, infection titer emerged as early as 10 weeks and the titer was increased from 99.4% to 100% for life. EDS76 showed increase in titers, reflecting decreased frequency of vaccination programs. Overall, this study displayed general trends of major viral disease in layers, but considering the trend of development of preventive measures and evolution of pathogens, conducting serological surveys on a regular basis is important.

Abstract

Context: Red ginseng (heat-processed Panax ginseng) is a well-known alternative medicine with pharmacological antidiabetic activity. It exerts pharmacological effects through the transformation of saponin into metabolites by the intestinal microbiota. Given that intestinal conditions and intestinal microflora vary among individuals, the pharmacological effects of orally administered red ginseng likely may vary among individuals.

Objective: To overcome this variation and produce homogeneously effective red ginseng, we evaluated the antidiabetic effects of probiotic-fermented red ginseng in a mouse model.

Materials and methods: The antidiabetic efficacy of orally administered probiotic-fermented red ginseng was assessed in ICR mice after induction of diabetes using streptozotocin (170 mg/kg body weight). Samples were given orally for 8 weeks, and indicators involved in diabetic disorders such as body weight change, water intake, blood glucose, glucose tolerance and various biochemical parameters were determined.

Results: Oral administration of probiotic-fermented red ginseng significantly decreased the level of blood glucose of about 62.5% in the fasting state and induced a significant increase in glucose tolerance of about 10.2% compared to the control diabetic mice. Additionally, various indicators of diabetes and biochemical data (e.g., blood glycosylated haemoglobin level, serum concentrations of insulin, and α-amylase activity) showed a significant improvement in the diabetic conditions of the mice treated with probiotic-fermented red ginseng in comparison with those of control diabetic mice.

Discussion and conclusion: Our results demonstrate the antidiabetic effects of probiotic-fermented red ginseng in the streptozotocin-induced mouse diabetes model and suggest that probiotic-fermented red ginseng may be a uniformly effective red ginseng product.

Pleurotus has increased rapidly production and consumption because of highly nutritional value, natural healthy food and so on. The basic studies for Pleurotus need for development of mushroom industry. This study was to investigate the cultural characteristics among 15 strains of 6 species and to analyze their phylogenetic relationships. The cultural characteristics were investigated by mycelial growth activity at different media, temperature and pH. The optimum media for mycelial growth were YM and MCM in most species. The optimum temperature for mycelial growth were 25˚C and 30˚C. The optimum pH for mycelial growth were widly range from pH 5.1 to 7.4. Through the RFLP (restriction fragment length polymorphism) of IGS (intergenic spacer) I region in ribosomal DNA, it was analyzed phylogeny of interspecies and intraspecies. Each species was discriminated well as isolates within each species formed clade to be distinguished other species. P. florida was highly similar to P. floridanus, and P. flabellatus was P. cornucopiae. P. fuscus var. ferulae was highly similar to P. eryngii but discriminated different species in analysis of RFLP of IGS I region and showed different characteristics in mycelial culture. RFLP of IGS I region was useful of studying phylogenetic relationships of species and population.
